Identification of wood energy resources in central Michigan

Existing biomass studies were compiled for determining their applicability in measuring forest biomass in an entirely new way. Over sixty tree-weight tables were prepared from existing tables or formulas. An estimate of forest biomass was made on a defined area by using Landsat Satellite data analysis, existing forest cover type maps and actual weighting of the entire biomass. Control plots were cruised for normal volume data and weight data, harvested and weighed to determine actual tonnage yields.

GASP-PL/I Simulation of Integrated Avionic System Processor Architectures

A development study sponsored by NASA was completed in July 1977 which proposed a complete integration of all aircraft instrumentation into a single modular system. Instead of using the current single-function aircraft instruments, computers compiled and displayed inflight information for the pilot. A processor architecture called the Team Architecture was proposed. This is a hardware/software approach to high-reliability computer systems. A follow-up study of the proposed Team Architecture is reported. GASP-PL/1 simulation models are used to evaluate the operating characteristics of the Team Architecture. The problem, model development, simulation programs and results at length are presented. Also included are program input formats, outputs and listings.

The natural resources inventory system ASVT project

The hardware/software and the associated procedures for a natural resource inventory and information system based on the use of LANDSAT-acquired multispectral scanner digital data is described. The system is designed to derive land cover/vegetation information from LANDSAT data and geographically reference this information for the production of various types of maps and for the compilation of acreage by land cover/vegetation category. The system also provides for data base building so that the LANDSAT-derived information can be related to information digitized from other sources (e.g., soils maps) in a geographic context in order to address specific applications. These applications include agricultural crop production estimation, erosion hazard-reforestation need assessment, whitetail deer habitat assessment, and site selection. The system is tested in demonstration areas located in the state of Mississippi, and the results of these application demonstrations are presented. A cost-efficiency comparison of producing land cover/vegetation maps and statistics with this system versus the use of small-scale aerial photography is made.

Present status of marine gravity

The technique of measuring gravity at sea was greatly improved by the development of spring-type surface-ship gravimeters which can be operated in a wide variety of sea conditions. A brief review of the most recent developments in marine gravity is presented. The extent of marine gravity data coverage is illustrated in a compilation map of the world's free-air gravity anomaly maps of the world's oceans. A brief discussion of some of the main results in the interpretation of marine gravity is given. Some comments made on recent determinations of the gravity field in oceanic regions using satellite radar altimeters are also presented.

Computer formulations of aircraft models for simulation studies

Recent developments in formula manipulation compilers and the design of several symbol manipulation languages, enable computers to be used for symbolic mathematical computation. A computer system and language that can be used to perform symbolic manipulations in an interactive mode are used to formulate a mathematical model of an aeronautical system. The example demonstrates that once the procedure is established, the formulation and modification of models for simulation studies can be reduced to a series of routine computer operations.

The Development of a Method of Producing Etch Resistant Wax Patterns on Solar Cells

The first quarter of a one-year program to investigate the production of patterned etch resistant wax coatings on solar cell substrates by printing is reported. Master molds for printing plates were produced for the plates. The resist wax is being studied to determine its relevant physical properties. A printing device is currently in design, and material costs are being compiled as first step in a cost analysis task. All phases of the project are proceeding according to schedule. No specific phases are yet completed.

Theoretical simulation of solar spectra in the middle ultraviolet and visible for atmospheric trace constituent measurements

The data compiled during the study allowed a detailed examination of the attenuation of the solar radiance by the combined effect of the atmospheric trace gases and the SAGE filters. The case of the 0.44 microns channel is presented. The amounts of NO2, NO2, O3 and the airmass were chosen to closely simulate a low sun spectral scan from a 9 February 1977 balloon flight. The solar radiance outside the earth's atmosphere was determined from the AFGL Sacramento Peak Observatory spectral data tape degraded to 2.0A resolution and normalized to Thekaekara's absolute intensities. The spectral absorption coefficients used for NO2 and O3 were tabulated previously.

The 1977 intertropical convergence zone experiment

Data are presented from the 1977 Intertropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ) Experiment conducted in the Panama Canal Zone in July 1977. Measurements were made daily over a 16-day period when the ITCZ moved across the Canal Zone. Two aircraft (Learjet and U-2) flew daily and provided data from horizontal traverses at several altitudes to 21.3 km of ozone, temperature, pressure, water vapor, aerosols, fluorocarbons, methane, nitrous oxide, nitric oxide, and nitric acid. Balloonsondes flown four times per day provided data on ozone, wind fields, pressure, temperature, and humidities to altitudes near 30 km. Rocketsondes provided daily data to altitudes near 69 km. Satellite photography provided detailed cloud information. Descriptions of individual experiments and detailed compilations of all results are provided.

Contemporary soaring nomenclature

Considerable technical progress took place during the past two decades in the field of soaring. In contrast, basic terminology in many languages is lagging seriously. English, one of the leading languages, is no exception. Because of this situation, misunderstandings occur which under some circumstances may result in undesirable consequences, hindering further technical developments as well as soaring activities. Definitions were established and compiled by mid-1973, followed by minor additions (1974 and 1977).

LACIE (Large Area Crop Inventory Experiment) Programme

Large Area Crop Inventory Experiment was a three year experiment conducted jointly by the United States Department of Agriculture, NASA, and NOAA (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration) to determine if global wheat production can be forecast from LANDSAT data to within 90% of actual yield for each observed 9 years out of 10. Data for the third crop year (1976-1977) was compiled. The proportional area of cultivated land devoted to wheat was estimated based on a statistical sampling of LANDSAT data. Yield is presently estimated by NOAA using regression models developed from historical weather and yield information. Results are discussed.
