High-Entropy Ceramic Coatings: Transformative New Materials for Environmentally-Compatible Thin-Film Insulators against High-T Molten Salts

An emerging new class of promising materials, High-Entropy Ceramics (HECs) or Compositionally-Complex Ceramics (CCCs), have been successfully fabricated in the last three years. This project evaluates HECs/CCCs in the concentrated solar power (CSP) context. In this project, we have identified a couple of simple, and key descriptors governing thermal conductivity in HECs. Size disorder among the cations was found to have a strong influence on the thermal conductivity across multiple systems and throughout a vast compositional space. Since identifying this, we have optimized previous compositions to achieve low thermal conductivities of $k$~$1-1.4Wm{-1}K{-1}$. We have further reduced our selection of promising compositions based on project guidelines and applied a theory that can potentially predict reactivity with molten salts to identify a small set of HECs that are suitable for further molten salt heat transfer media (HTM) stability testing. Many compositions reveal poor resistance to molten chloride salt after being exposed for 24 h compared to the reference structural alloy, Haynes 230. However, after 100 h, a few HECs/CCCs show strong parabolic rate constant effects and provide greater resistance to chloride salt compared to Haynes 230 alloy, which shows more linear kinetics. Postmortem characterization of the microstructure reveals the parabolic rate constant originates from a dense reaction layer form at the interface. This feature is absent in Haynes 230, which only shows grain boundary infiltration. The HECs/CCCs were also put in contact with the metal alloy under Ar for 800 h at 800°C and show negligible interaction. Lastly, parabolic rate constant HECs/CCCs also have low thermal conductivity $(<2 Wm^{-1} K^{-1})$ at 800°C. These specimens satisfy all project requirements and demonstrate their promising application in next-generation CSP.

Tribological Evaluation of Candidate Coatings

This SPP project with Novus was to investigate tribological properties of candidate ceramic composites. Systematic tribological bench tests and surface characterization were performed to determine composition-property relationships of several Zr-Ti-B based ceramic composites of different compositions. The lowest friction coefficient was measured with Ti0.6Zr0.4B2 composition tested in the hydraulic oil. Surface characterization suggests a formation of ZDDP tribofilm in the worn region when tested with a hydraulic oil. In all experiments, the ceramic composites did not have measurable wear, but caused material loss of the steel countersurface.

Ab Initio Simulations of Tritium Diffusion in Al 2 O and Intermetallic Al 12 (TM) 2.34 Aluminide Coating Phases

Density functional theory simulations have been carried out to investigate the diffusion of interstitial tritium in Al 12 (TM) 2.34 and Al 2 O bulk phases. In Al 12 (TM) 2.34 the transition metal (TM) sites are occupied on average by 58.93 at.% Fe, 18.52 at.% Cr, and 22.54 at.% Ni. While the insertion of interstitial tritium in Al 2 O lead to a strong disordering of the structure, we only investigated interstitial tritium in Al 12 (TM) 2.34 and its iron end-member (i.e., Al 12 Fe 2.34 ). Nine diffusion pathways have been investigated along the a-, b-, and c -axis of Al 12 (TM) 2.34 . The direction of fastest diffusion for interstitial tritium is found to be along the b-axis, with a calculated diffusion coefficient of ≈10 -10 m 2 .s -1 at 600 K, which is at least one order of magnitude faster than those previously calculated for interstitial tritium in other Al-rich phases such as Fe2Alx, Fe4Al13, and FeNiAl5 for which D T =10 -11 m 2 .s -1 , ≈10 -12 m 2 .s -1 , and D T ≈10 -13 m 2 .s -1 respectively. The comparison of the energy landscape between Al 12 (TM) 2.34 and Al 12 Fe 2.34 for the fastest diffusion pathways in each axis direction, found that some pathways are not sensitive to transition metal mixing, while other are more affected, leading to higher energy barrier in Al 12 Fe 2.34 in part due to a more energetically favorable formation of Fe—T bond compared to Ni—T. However, we found that both materials have similar diffusion coefficients as the fastest diffusion pathways occurs along pathways that are not very sensitive to transition metal mixing.
