Solar-System Tests of Gravitational Theories

This research is aimed at testing gravitational theory, primarily on an interplanetary scale and using mainly observations of objects in the solar system. Our goal is either to detect departures from the standard model (general relativity) - if any exist within the level of sensitivity of our data - or to support this model by placing tighter bounds on any departure from it. For this project, we have analyzed a combination of observational data with our model of the solar system, including planetary radar ranging, lunar laser ranging, and spacecraft tracking, as well as pulsar timing and pulsar VLBI measurements.

CDDIS Data Center Summary for the 2004 IVS Annual Report

This report summarizes activities during the year 2004 and future plans of the Crustal Dynamics Data Information System (CDDIS) with respect to the International VLBI service for Geodesy and Astrometry (IVS). Included in this report are background information about the CDDIS, the computer architecture, staffing the support system, archive contents, and future plans for the CDDIS within the IVS.

A Stardust Revealed - Luminous Radio Supernovae in the Nuclei of Arp 220

In this work we present a new 18cm VLBI image, with 3 x 8 mas angular resolution, showing approximately a dozen unresolved resources, S(sub 18cm) = 0.2-1.2mJy, within a 0.2 x 0.4(75 x 150pc) region centered on the NW nucleus of this merging system.

Symmetric Parsec-scale OH Megamaser Structure in Arp 220

The parsec-scale OH megamaser emission in the luminous IR galaxy Arp 220 has been imaged in detail using a global VLBI array. Four major emission regions are revealed in the 1667 MHz line, each with complex spatial and velocity structure showing intriguing symmetries.

Astrometric Detection of a Low Mass Companion Orbiting the Star AB Doradus

We report submilliarcsecond--precise astrometric measurements for the late-type star AB Doradus via a combination of VLBI(very long baseline interferometry) and Hipparcos satellite data. Our astrometric analysis results in the precise determination of the kinematics of this star, that reveals an orbital motion readily explained as caused by the gravitational interaction with a low-mass companion.

(abstract) A Relativistically Expanding Radio Source Associated with GRO J1655-40

GRO J1655-40 was discovered as a new, bright X-ray source with the BATSE detector of the Gamma Ray Observatory (GRO) on July 27, 1994. During the subsequent radio outburst we completed VLBI synthesis imaging observations at a frequency of 2.29 GHz. An unprecedented angular motion of 65+/- mas per day was reported between two components of complex and disparate morphology ?? The separation rate indicates that the two components were at zero separation near the onset of the radio flare. Similar to the recently reported GRS 1915+105, it seems that the motion of material ejected from a stellar mass compact object with at least a mildly relativistic velocity may explain the observed radio structural changes in GRO J1655-40. The two-week delay between the X-ray outburst and the production of radio components may indicate that the X-rays were produced by a super-critical accretion process onto the compact member of this stellar binary system. This process inhibited or smothered the ejection of radio components until the accretion disk stabilized.

Aerocapture navigation at Neptune

A proposed Neptune orbiter Aerocapture mission will use solar electric propulsion to send an orbiter to Neptune. Navigation feasibility of direct-entry aerocapture for orbit insertion at Neptune is shown. The navigation strategy baselines optical imaging and (delta)VLBI measurement in order to satisfy the flight system's atmosphere entry flight path angle, which is targeted to enter Neptune with an entry flight path angle of -11.6 . Error bars on the entry flight path angle of plus/minus0.55 (3(sigma)) are proposed. This requirement can be satisfied with a data cutoff 3.2 days prior to arrival. There is some margin in the arrival template to tighten (i.e. reduce) the entry corridor either by scheduling a data cutoff closer to Neptune or alternatively, reducing uncertainties by increasing the fidelity of the optical navigation camera.
