Avalanche photodiode and an optical receiver having the same

Examples described herein relate to an avalanche photodiode (APD) and an optical receiver including the APD. The APD may include a substrate and a photon absorption region disposed on the substrate. The substrate may include a charge carrier acceleration region under the photon absorption region; a charge region adjacent to the charge carrier acceleration region; and a charge carrier multiplication region adjacent to the charge region. The charge carrier acceleration region, the charge region, and the charge carrier multiplication region are laterally formed in the substrate. When a biasing voltage is applied to the optoelectronic device, photon-generated free charge carriers may be generated in the photon absorption region and are diffused into the charge carrier acceleration region. The charge carrier acceleration region is configured to accelerate the photon-generated free charge carriers prior to the photon-generated free charge carriers entering into the charge region and undergoing impact ionization in the charge carrier multiplication region.

Solar thermal aerogel receiver and materials therefor

A silica aerogel having a mean pore size less than 5 nm with a standard deviation of 3 nm. The silica aerogel may have greater than 95% solar-weighted transmittance at a thickness of 8 mm for wavelengths in the range of 250 nm to 2500 nm, and a 400° C. black-body weighted specific extinction coefficient of greater than 8 m2/kg for wavelengths of 1.5 μm to 15 μm. Silica aerogel synthesis methods are described. A solar thermal aerogel receiver (STAR) may include an opaque frame defining an opening, an aerogel layer disposed in the opaque frame, with at least a portion of the aerogel layer being proximate the opening, and a heat transfer fluid pipe in thermal contact with and proximate the aerogel layer. A concentrating solar energy system may include a STAR and at least one reflector to direct sunlight to an opening in the STAR.

Detection Performance of Upgraded "Polished Panel" Optical Receiver Concept on the Deep-Space Network's 34 Meter Research Antenna

Initial optical communications experiments with a Vertex polished aluminum panel have been described. The polished panel was mounted on the main reflector of the DSN's research antenna at DSS-13. The PSF was recorded via remotely controlled digital camera mounted on the subreflector structure. Initial PSF generated by Jupiter showed significant tilt error and some mechanical deformation. After upgrades, the PSF improved significantly, leading to much better concentration of light. Communications performance of the initial and upgraded panel structure were compared. After the upgrades, simulated PPM symbol error probability decreased by six orders of magnitude. Work is continuing to demonstrate closed-loop tracking of sources from zenith to horizon, and better characterize communications performance in realistic daytime background environments.

Simulation Results for PCM/PM/NRZ Receivers in Non-Ideal Channels

This paper studies, by computer simulations, the performance of deep space telemetry signals that employ PCM/PM/NRZ modulation technique under the separate and combined effects of an unbalanced data stream, data asymmetry, and band-limited channel. The study is based on measuring the Symbol Error Rate (SER) performance and comparing the results to the theoretical results presented in previous reports [1,2]. Only the effects of imperfect carrier tracking due to an imperfect data stream are considered.
