A multilayer network analysis of Alzheimer's disease pathogenesis: Roles for p‐tau, synaptic peptides, and physical activity

INTRODUCTION: In the aging brain, cognitive abilities emerge from the coordination of complex pathways arising from a balance between protective lifestyle and environmental factors and accumulation of neuropathologies. METHODS: As part of the Rush Memory and Aging Project (n = 440), we measured accelerometer-based actigraphy, cognitive performance, and after brain autopsy, selected reaction monitoring mass spectrometry. Multilevel network analysis was used to examine the relationships among the molecular machinery of vesicular neurotransmission, Alzheimer's disease (AD) neuropathology, cognition, and late-life physical activity. RESULTS: Synaptic peptides involved in neuronal secretory function were the most influential contributors to the multilayer network, reflecting the complex interdependencies among AD pathology, synaptic processes, and late-life cognition. Older adults with lower physical activity evidenced stronger adverse relationships among phosphorylated tau peptides, markers of synaptic integrity, and tangle pathology. DISCUSSION: Network-based approaches simultaneously model interdependent biological processes and advance understanding of the role of physical activity in age-associated cognitive impairment. Highlights: Network-based approaches simultaneously model interdependent biological processes. Secretory synaptic peptides were influential contributors to the multilayer network. Older adults with lower physical activity had adverse relationships among pathology. There was interdependence among phosphorylated tau, synaptic integrity, and tangles. Network methods elucidate the role of physical activity in cognitive impairment.

The analytic two-loop soft function for leading-jet p T

We present the calculation of the two-loop soft function for the transverse momentum distribution of the leading jet produced in association with any colour-singlet system (e.g. a Higgs or a Z boson). This constitutes a central ingredient for the resummation of the above distribution as well as the jet-vetoed cross section at the next-to-next-to-next-to-leading logarithmic order, both of which play an important role in the precision physics programme at the Large Hadron Collider. The calculation is performed in soft-collinear effective theory with an appropriate regularisation of the rapidity divergences that occur in the phase-space integrals. We obtain analytic results by employing an exponential regulator and by taking a Laurent expansion in the jet radius R . All expressions are presented as supplementary material attached to this article.

P not PQ

Parity solutions to the strong CP problem are a compelling alternative to approaches based on Peccei-Quinn symmetry, particularly given the expected violation of global symmetries in a theory of quantum gravity. The most natural of these solutions break parity at a low scale, giving rise to a host of experimentally accessible signals. We assess the status of the simplest parity-based solution in light of LHC data and flavor constraints, highlighting the prospects for near-future tests at colliders, tabletop experiments, and gravitational wave observatories. The origin of parity breaking and associated gravitational effects play crucial roles, providing new avenues for discovery through EDMs and gravity waves. These experimental opportunities underline the promise of generalized parity, rather than Peccei-Quinn symmetry, as a robust and testable solution to the strong CP problem.

Integrable deformation of $\mathbb{C}$P n and generalised Kähler geometry

We build on the results of [1] for generalised frame fields on generalised quotient spaces and study integrable deformations for CP n . In particular we show how, when the target space of the Principal Chiral Model is a complex projective space, a two-parameter deformation can be introduced in principle. The second parameter can however be removed via a diffeomorphism, which we construct explicitly, in accordance with the results stemming from a thorough integrability analysis we carry out. We also elucidate how the deformed target space can be seen as an instance of generalised Kähler, or equivalently bi-Hermitian, geometry. In this respect, we find the generic form of the pure spinors for CP n and the explicit expression for the generalised Kähler potential for n = 1, 2.

Manipulating Retained Austenite Fraction and Stability With Controlled Chemical Heterogeneities in Q&P Steels

Advanced high-strength steels go through complex heat treatment processes with the goal of retaining austenite to enhance the mechanical properties. Martensite start temperature predictions are generally based on bulk composition when designing heat treatments, so compositional heterogeneities are not considered. Here, the effects of compositional heterogeneities on retained austenite fractions in a quenching and partitioning steel are investigated. In conclusion, the results show that Mn banding from solidification can be used to change retained austenite fractions.

Elucidating the temperature dependence of TRIP in Q&P steels using synchrotron X-Ray diffraction, constituent phase properties, and strain-based kinetics models

Understanding the deformation-induced martensitic transformation (DIMT) is critical for interpreting the structure-property relationships that govern the performance of transformation-induced plasticity (TRIP) assisted steels. However, modern TRIP-assisted steels often exhibit DIMT kinetics that are not easily captured by existing empirical models based on bulk tensile strain. We address this challenge by combined bulk uniaxial tensile tests and in-situ high energy synchrotron X-ray diffraction, which resolved the phase volume fractions, stress-strain response, and microstructure evolution of each constituent phase. A modification of the Olson-Cohen model is implemented, which describes the martensitic transformation kinetics as a function of the estimated partitioned strain in austenite, rather than the bulk tensile strain. This DIMT kinetic model is used as a framework to clarify the root cause of an insufficiently understood toughness trough reported for TRIP-assisted steels during deformation at elevated temperatures. Here, the importance of the temperature-dependent toughness is discussed, based on the opportunity to modify deformation processes to tailor the DIMT kinetics and mechanical properties during forming and in service.

Transport model predictions of 225 Ac production cross sections via energetic p, d and α irradiation of 232 Th targets

Monte Carlo transport codes PHITS and MCNP6 were used to calculate the production cross sections of 225,227 Ac, 227,229 Th, 223,225 Ra, and 229,230,231 Pa via the bombardment of a 232 Th target with energetic protons, deuterons, and α-particles. The incident projectile energies ranged between 10 and 800 MeV/nucleon. When possible, the predicted production cross sections were compared with the available experimental data and other predictions. Here, the degree of the codes’ abilities to match the measured data provides a qualitative assessment of the codes’ abilities to predict data from similar, but unmeasured, projectile/target systems. In addition, a comparison between calculated cross sections and data may provide insight into possible improvements in the physics models employed by those transport codes.
