Impurity Monitoring During Multiple Recycles of Mo Targets for Accelerator-Produced Mo-99

Accelerator-based methods have been developed to produce kilocurie quantities of low specific-activity 99 Mo from Mo targets. The irradiation of enriched 100 Mo, in place of nat Mo, greatly reduces the activity of side-reaction products formed from other Mo isotopes, which have a fairly wide distribution of natural isotopic abundances: 92 Mo (14.8%), 94 Mo (9.3%), 95 Mo (15.9%), 96 Mo (16.7%), 97 Mo (9.5%), and 98 Mo (21.4%). The side-reaction impurities of chief concern are 91m Nb and 88 Zr/ 88 Y (from 92 Mo), 92m Nb (from 94 Mo), and 95 Nb, 96 Nb, and 97 Nb (from 98 Mo). The new production technologies also require new chemical processing and purification schemes that emphasize low-waste recycling of the expensive, enriched Mo material.

Domain Adaptive Graph Neural Networks for Constraining Cosmological Parameters Across Multiple Data Sets

Deep learning models have been shown to outperform methods that rely on summary statistics, like the power spectrum, in extracting information from complex cosmological data sets. However, due to differences in the subgrid physics implementation and numerical approximations across different simulation suites, models trained on data from one cosmological simulation show a drop in performance when tested on another. Similarly, models trained on any of the simulations would also likely experience a drop in performance when applied to observational data. Training on data from two different suites of the CAMELS hydrodynamic cosmological simulations, we examine the generalization capabilities of Domain Adaptive Graph Neural Networks (DA-GNNs). By utilizing GNNs, we capitalize on their capacity to capture structured scale-free cosmological information from galaxy distributions. Moreover, by including unsupervised domain adaptation via Maximum Mean Discrepancy (MMD), we enable our models to extract domain-invariant features. We demonstrate that DA-GNN achieves higher accuracy and robustness on cross-dataset tasks. Using data visualizations, we show the effects of domain adaptation on proper latent space data alignment. This shows that DA-GNNs are a promising method for extracting domain-independent cosmological information, a vital step toward robust deep learning for real cosmic survey data.

Expanded verification and validation studies of hypersonic aerodynamics with multiple physics-fidelity models

Hypersonic aerothermodynamics is an important domain of modern multiphysics simulation. The Multi-Fidelity Toolkit is a simulation tool being developed at Sandia National Laboratories to predict aerodynamic properties for compressible flows from a range of physics fidelities and computational speeds. These models include the Reynolds-averaged Navier–Stokes (RANS) equations, the Euler equations with momentum-energy integral technique (MEIT), and modified Newtonian aerodynamics with flat-plate boundary layer (MNA+FPBL) equations, and they can be invoked independently or coupled with hierarchical Kriging to interpolate between high-fidelity simulations using lower-fidelity data. However, as with any new simulation capability, verification and validation are necessary to gather credibility evidence. This work describes formal code- and solution-verification activities, as well as model validation with uncertainty considerations. Code verification activities on the MNA+FPBL model build on previous work by focusing on the viscous portion of the model. Viscous quantities of interest are compared against those from an analytical solution for flat-plate, inclined-plate, and cone geometries. The code verification methodology for the MEIT model is also presented. Test setup and results of code verification tests on the laminar and turbulent models within MEIT are shown. Solution-verification activities include grid-refinement studies on simulations that model the HIFiRE-1 wind tunnel experiments. These experiments are used for validation of all model fidelities. A thorough validation comparison with prediction error and uncertainty is also presented. Three additional HIFiRE-1 experimental runs are simulated in this study, and the solution verification and validation work examines the effects of the associated parameter changes on model performance. Finally, a study is presented that compares the computational costs and fidelities from each of the different models.

HyperKube: A Kubernetes Based System for the Automation of Processing and Analysis of Hyperspectral Data Obtained from Multiple Hyperspectral Imaging Systems

Hyperspectral imagery is an emerging field of technology that has enormous potential for remote and proximal sensing in numerous areas of research. The plant phenotyping community is applying this technology to advance the throughput and accuracy of plant phenotypes based on airborne and lab-based hyperspectral imaging technology. Here we report an automated processing and analysis pipeline for four different hyperspectral imaging platforms, discuss the data issues involved, and present a strategy for computing and data architecture to handle hyperspectral data.

Overview of 2017 Through 2018 Testing of Powered Air-Purifying Respirator (PAPR) Cartridge Performance on Multiple Hanford Tank Headspaces and Exhausters

Between 2017 and 2018, 10 powered air-purifying respirator (PAPR) cartridge tests were performed on headspace vapors from three Hanford tanks (BY-108, SX-101, and SX-104) and two Hanford Tank Farm exhausters (AP in 2018 and AX in 2017). All tests were conducted under static conditions absent waste-disturbing activities in the subject tanks or tank farms. Multipurpose high-efficiency PAPR cartridges, MSA-TL (TL1) (MSA Safety Inc., Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania) and 3M FR-57 (TL2) (3M Company, Maplewood, Minnesota), were tested on each of the five tanks or exhausters. Out of 61 1 Chemicals of Potential Concern (COPCs), only ammonia and 2,5-dimethylfuran exhibited breakthroughs with outlet concentrations that were greater than 10% of their Occupational Exposure Limits (OEL). For 2,5-dimethylfuran, elevated concentrations found in blank tube samples made the elevated outlet measurements for this COPC questionable.
