Mechanical continuous system equilibrium stability under follower forces, discussing viscous damping destabilizing effects
Antennas are described with gravitational radiation properties such as polarization, directivity, and scalar and tensor characteristics. These antenna devices are mechanically resonant systems in the shape of a hollow square with fundamental frequencies in the Hz range. An antenna characteristic is that the absorption cross section for quadrupole radiation at the normal frequency of vibration is the same as that of the fundamental if the damping factors are the same. The absorption cross section of quadrupole gravitational radiation is calculated for a class-1 detector of a cylindrical cross section and for a class-2 detector shaped like a hollow square.
Self-contained mechanical measuring system is handmounted by simply compressing installation spring and inserting device into hole of matching size. It is self-aligning as each contact pin maintains constant contact with surface being measured. Strain level is controlled by design to provide for measurements over almost unlimited number of load cycles.
The Thermal Analysis Variant of the COMOC (computational continuum mechanics) computer system solves problems involving transient heat conduction and convection in stationary continua spanning arbitrarily irregular two-dimensional and axisymmetric solution domains. COMOC is based upon a finite element solution algorithm for the energy equation, and solves for the transient nodal temperature distribution using a highly stable and automatic explicit integration procedure. COMOC is extensively user-oriented, requires minimal input, and no a priori knowledge concerning the stability character of the differential equation system. It can readily output computed data in user-specified format fields, that geometrically resemble the solution domain discretization (for rapid engineering evaluation). Complete information is provided for applying COMOC to a specific problem.
Brief review of relevant information on the composition of stars, interstellar matter, and individual bodies of the solar system. An attempt is made to answer fundamental questions of organic cosmochemistry - namely, the nature of the organic and related molecules present in our Galaxy and solar system, the distribution of these molecules in different parts of the two systems, the mechanism of formation of these molecules, and the relation between these molecules and prebiological chemical evolution on the one hand, and terrestrial and, possibly, extraterrestrial biology, on the other. Detailed studies are made of the formation and chemical behavior of the organogenic elements in stars, interstellar matter, comets, meteorites, carbonaceous chondrites, and the terrestrial and Jovian planets.
Bivariant eutectic alloys, located on a liquidus surface within the Ni-Cb-Cr-Al quaternary, were identified which permitted the production of aligned delta Ni3Cb lamellae within a nichrome matrix containing the fcc precipitate gamma prime Ni3Al. The volume fraction of delta and gamma prime could be varied significantly by compositional changes. After directional solidification certain alloys possessed improved ductility and corrosion resistance with respect to the Ni3Al-Ni3Cb eutectic, while their values of tensile and creep strength approached or exceeded those for the Ni3Al-Ni3Cb pseudobinary system. The mechanical properties of the directionally solidified alloy, Ni-19.7 wt % Cb-6.0 wt % Cr-2.5 wt % Al, were evaluated. Its longitudinal strength in tension and creep was found to be superior to all advanced nickel base superalloys. It is thus demonstrated that useful properties for gas turbine airfoil applications can be achieved by reinforcing a strong and tough gamma nichrome matrix containing precipitated gamma prime by a strong lamellar intermetallic compound having greater strength at elevated temperature.
Inlet mouthpiece with variable geometry improves low-speed performance of inlet (or ejector) of jet engines by use of reversed cowl-flap mechanism. Flaps can be adjusted mechanically or system can be operated with pressure taps set so pressure on inlet face is always smaller than pressure on back of inlet.
A technique is presented for modeling the performance of open-loop mechanisms or systems, where performance is measured by success or failure as a function of the selected target for movement along a constrained trajectory and without corrective feedback. A modification of signal detection theory is used, which normalizes dissimilar data and indicates two independent parameters of performance: (1) discriminability and (2) optimality of the distribution of selected moves. An illustrative application is made to experimental data.
A research program was conducted to further the professional knowledge of qualified engineering and science faculty members, to stimulate an exchange of ideas between participants and NASA engineers and scientists, and to enrich the research activities of the participants' institutions. Abstracts of reports submitted at the end of the program are presented. Topics investigated include multispectral photography, logic circuits, gravitation theories, information systems, fracture mechanics, holographic interferometry, surface acoustic wave technology, ion beams in the upper atmosphere, and hybrid microcircuits.
The degree to which flight-critical failures in a strapdown laser gyro tetrad sensor assembly can be isolated in short-haul aircraft after a failure occurrence has been detected by the skewed sensor failure-detection voting logic is investigated along with the degree to which a failure in the tetrad computer can be detected and isolated at the computer level, assuming a dual-redundant computer configuration. The tetrad system was mechanized with two two-axis inertial navigation channels (INCs), each containing two gyro/accelerometer axes, computer, control circuitry, and input/output circuitry. Gyro/accelerometer data is crossfed between the two INCs to enable each computer to independently perform the navigation task. Computer calculations are synchronized between the computers so that calculated quantities are identical and may be compared. Fail-safe performance (identification of the first failure) is accomplished with a probability approaching 100 percent of the time, while fail-operational performance (identification and isolation of the first failure) is achieved 93 to 96 percent of the time.
The initial objective of the program was the optimization (in terms of cost and performance) of a Rankine cycle mechanical refrigeration system which utilizes thermal energy from a flat solar collector for air conditioning residential buildings. However, feasibility investigations of the adsorption process revealed that a dessicant-type air conditioner offers many significant advantages. As a result, limited efforts were expended toward the optimization of such a system.
The objective of this research is to fully investigate the Ribbon-To-Ribbon (R-T-R) approach to silicon ribbon growth. Initial work has concentrated on modification and characterization of an existing R-T-R apparatus. In addition, equipment for auxiliary heating of the melt is being evaluated and acquired. Modification of the remote viewing system and mechanical staging are nearly complete. Characterization of the laser and other components is in progress and several auxiliary heating techniques are being investigated.
In an actual engine system, one mechanism for production of hot spots is the burning of various fluid elements at various different mixture ratios. Variable mixture ratio means variable temperature, and this is the effect that has been studied insofar as a noise source is concerned. However, variable mixture ratio also implies variable molecular weight and heat capacity. The paper investigates whether either of these last two variations may be responsible for a significant noise source. The analysis is made within the context of one-dimensional unsteady flow as in the work of Candel (1972). A mixture of thermally perfect gases is assumed as the working fluid, and the fluid composition consists of species 1 and a small and variable mole fraction of species 2 which has different molecular weight and specific heats as compared with species 1. In the absence of changes in the ratio of specific heat (gamma), the entropy variations due to temperature and molecular weight variations are equivalent as a sound source. The portion of sound called 'gamma prime' noise is discussed.

The aircraft development program, budgetary estimates in CY 1976 dollars, and cost reduction program variants are presented. Detailed cost matrices are also provided for the mechanical transmission system, turbotip transmission system, and the thrust vector hoods and yaw doors.
The feasibility of fitting a rotating oblique wing on an F-8 aircraft to produce a full scale manned prototype capable of operating in the transonic and supersonic speed range was investigated. The strength, aeroelasticity, and fatigue life of such a prototype are analyzed. Concepts are developed for a new wing, a pivot, a skewing mechanism, control systems that operate through the pivot, and a wing support assembly that attaches in the F-8 wing cavity. The modification of the two-place NTF-8A aircraft to the oblique wing configuration is discussed.
