Tailoring Corrosion Resistance of Additively Manufactured Metals with Atomic Layer Deposition

The goal of this work is to develop a scalable post-manufacturing capability at LANL that utilizes atomic layer deposition (ALD) for corrosion-resistant coatings onto additively manufactured (AM) metals. This will provide fundamentally new and essential capabilities towards the interchangeability of AM metals with traditionally wrought or machined material. This will be accomplished by (1) formulating novel ALD precursor doses and film thicknesses onto as-printed coupons of AM metals and (2) providing electrochemical characterization of corrosion susceptibility as a function of deposited film thickness. While ALD is well-established, the unique aspect (risk) of this work is application to rough AM surfaces. This risk is mitigated by repeating ALD deposition cycles, where thicker coatings laterally branch, resulting in a uniform coating. This risk will be assessed in the phase 1 feasibility study, wherein the application of ALD coatings to small AM coupon surfaces will be demonstrated using existing hardware and characterization tools at Sigma. This study alone will provide ground-breaking insight on the compatibility of ALD coating techniques with AM metals. Going beyond the phase 1 study, a standalone deposition chamber will be built, so full AM components can be coated and tested. While this MFR investment is focused on corrosion mitigation, it is critical to highlight external benefits of this technique outside the scope of this proposed study. ALD has extraordinary universality, whereby almost any material can be given almost any coating or graded density coating with atomic precision; and, the only limiting factors to scalability is the size of the dosing chamber. The self-limiting reactions intrinsic to ALD offers high conformity to part geometry and tolerance, even for internal surfaces where electroplating or conventional chemical vapor deposition falls short due to differential diffusion. This uniquely positions ALD at the forefront of post-manufacturing strategies for AM components, especially for those with complex geometry and internal surfaces.

8 Ft Vessel Refinishing Contract Introduction [Slides]

LANL utilizes spherical vessels for numerous basic science, materials, and system performance experiments. The 8 ft vessel was fabricated in the early 2000s to ASME B&PVC Section VIII Division 1 using HSLA-100 material. This vessel was not used operationally due to programmatic change in direction. Years of improper maintenance and storage has resulted in deterioration of sealing surfaces and bolt hole threads. New mission needs call for expanded capabilities in terms of vessel sizes, therefore refinishing the 8ft vessel is crucial.

Outreach to Industry on Safeguards by Design Concept for Small Modular Reactors

"Safeguards by Design" (SBD) is the process of incorporating safeguards features into the design of a nuclear facility during the design stage. The goal of SBD is to increase the safeguardability of a facility, which is a qualitative measure of the degree of ease with which a nuclear energy system can be effectively and efficiently placed under international safeguards. During the past decade, the National Nuclear Security Administration's (NNSA) Next Generation Safeguards Initiative funded the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL), Brookhaven National Laboratory, and several consultants to develop the Facility Safeguardability Assessment (FSA) process. FSA is a screening process used by a facility designer to focus attention on the aspects of their facility or process design that would most benefit from application of SBD principles and practices. The process identifies the most relevant guidance within the SBD tools for enhancing the safeguardability of the design. During FY 2014, NNSA sponsored BNL and LANL to introduce the FSA to Westinghouse designers of their small modular nuclear power plant design. This report documents the interactions with Westinghouse Electric Company LLC ("Westinghouse") staff. The report describes the Westinghouse safeguards design concept with a view towards eventual application of the FSA to their design.

Lab’s Z-machine efforts advance stockpile stewardship in multi-org collaboration

For the past 15 years, Los Alamos (LANL) employees have played a major role in plutonium experiments using the Z-machine — a device at Sandia National Laboratories (SNL) that uses high magnetic fields, electrical currents, and X-rays to help scientists understand how materials behave under extreme temperatures and pressures. High-energy density physics, or the study of matter under extreme conditions, is a key component of certifying the nation’s nuclear weapons stockpile.

Nuclear Data: What, Why How, Who? [Slides]

Nuclear data is data that describes physics in forms and formats that computer code can read to perform simulations of nuclear processes. The data is put into ”evaluations” following the combination of experiment and theory. Various physics are applied to these evaluations by the NJOY nuclear data processing code to produce application files, which simulation codes (e.g., MCNP, Partisn, etc.) can use to model various scenarios. The Nuclear Data Team at Los Alamos National Laboratory—in partnership with a variety of national and international organizations—provides nuclear data for use at LANL and throughout the world. This data is verified and validated to ensure that it performs as expected and accurately represents Mother Nature.

Niowave Flow Testing of the High Power Converter - FY 21

Design work for a 100 kW converter to produce a neutron flux via electron impact on a flowing stream of liquid metal lead-bismuth (LBE) was conducted in FY20. In FY21, the focus shifted to a 20 kW converter which was designed in collaboration with Niowave engineers. A flow visualization model is needed to validate model results for the 20 kW converter and ensure adequate coolant flow over containment structures. This work highlights the mockup that was made with quartz side plates by LANL.

A summary of air sampler filter performance data: Bladewerx Speclon 5(TM) and Millipore FMLW047 5um

Bladewerx™ LLC (Rio Rancho, NM) manufactures instrumentation, neutron shielding and activation foils for the radiation protection industry. Specializing in portable alpha/beta air monitors and sample counters, Bladewerx is the source of Speclon 5™ PTFE filter media that they recommend for high-resolution alpha spectroscopy. Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) utilizes Speclon™ filter material in CAM (Continuous Air Monitor) samplers for workplace air monitoring. Millipore FMLW (5μm) filters are also used at Los Alamos, and a comparison of the two filter types has been requested. For filter face air velocities from 0.066 m/s to 1.5 m/s, the aerosol collection efficiency (for 0.3 μm particle diameters) and the filter pressure drops were measured. The FWHM (full width half maximum) of alpha spectroscopy peaks was also determined, using naturally occurring radon progeny at an alpha energy of 6 MeV.

Jan-Dec 2021 IC Project: w20_earthquake (Yearly Report)

The simulations conducted under this IC project used an in-house code developed at Los Alamos National Laboratory called HOSS (Hybrid Optimization Software Suite) and its extended version called HOSS-FSIS (fluid-structure interaction solver). HOSS has been under development in LANL’s Geophysics Group since 2004 and was used to simulate the signal propagation in pieces of material with pre-existing defects and also to simulate the near source effects of above ground nuclear explosions. One of the key feature of HOSS is that it is superior to pure finite element method and discrete element method implementations because it allows for a natural transition from continuum to discontinuum when the material breaks or fractures.

The Preston-Tonks-Wallace (PTW) Model Parameterization of Al-6061 With Sesame EoS

In this report, we make a recommendation for the PTW model parameters for an aluminum alloy, Al 6061-T6 based on the quasi-static and split-Hopkin pressure bar experimental data, provided by the experimentalists in MST-8, LANL. Al 6061 is an aluminum alloy with magnesium and silicon, and the temper designation T6 means it has gone through heat treatment followed by quenching, cooling, and aging. (Note that T4 is naturally aged and T6, artificially.) We adopted the shear modulus and melt curve models that are necessary to parameterize the PTW model, from Sesame EoS. In the lack of those information on this particular aluminum alloy, we used what is available for pure aluminum.
