Locating Equitable Solar Opportunities by Census Tract: A Guide to the Screening Tool for Equitable Adoption and Deployment of Solar (STEADy Solar)

The Screening Tool for Equitable Adoption and DeploYment of Solar (STEADy Solar) is a database and mapping tool that indicates locations that may be eligible for the Investment Tax Credit bonus adders defined in the 2022 Inflation Reduction Act (IRA). The tool combines publicly available information on demographics, solar technical potential, solar economics (modeled net present value), building counts by use-type, and eligibility for tax credit adders. It can be used by states, municipalities, community-based organizations, developers, and researchers to identify sites where solar projects may be economical and where federal incentives may be available to support equitable adoption of solar. This report describes the STEADy dataset and presents high level insights from the data.

Surrogate Model Guided Optimization of Expensive Black-Box Multi-Objective Problems: A Posteriori Methods

Many engineering applications require the simultaneous optimization of multiple conflicting objective functions. Often, these objective functions are evaluated using highly accurate computer simulations that are computationally too expensive to be evaluated hundreds or thousands of times during optimization. Thus, the goal is to find good approximations of the Pareto front using as few of these expensive simulations as possible. Here, we describe an optimization approach based on surrogate models and diverse sampling strategies to accelerate the search for the Pareto solutions. We use a separate surrogate model for approximating each objective function and then we use the surrogate models to inform where additional expensive simulations should be run. The surrogate models are updated in an active learning framework whenever new information from the expensive simulations becomes available. The sampling strategies aim at balancing local improvements of the approximate Pareto front and global exploration to identify the extrema and fill in large gaps of the approximate Pareto front. We demonstrate on a large set of benchmark problems the effectiveness of the method for finding good approximations of the Pareto front.

Example Alternative Compliance Annual Report: EPAct State and Alternative Fuel Provider Fleet Program User Guide

The U.S. Department of Energy developed an electronic reporting spreadsheet to facilitate fleets' preparation of a complete Alternative Compliance (AC) annual report. All fleets that participate in AC are encouraged to use the spreadsheet. The following examples include one AC annual report that uses the spreadsheet and one AC annual report that does not use the spreadsheet. Both examples include all components that must be included in a fleet's AC annual report. For further instructions on how to use the reporting spreadsheet, review the Alternative Compliance Guidance Document.

A Practical guide to Parsing MCNP Inputs: Lessons Learned from Implementing Context-Free Parsing in MontePy

Monte Carlo N-Particle (MCNP) is a widely used Monte Carlo transport solver that began development in the 1960’s. Due to this MCNP input files uses a custom input syntax, for which there are no off-the-shelf parsing libraries available. For MontePy to create an effective Object-Oriented interface for MCNP input files, an context-free parser was implemented to be able to fully parse the files. MontePy uses a number of shortcuts and optimizations to avoid creating a single universal input file parser. . These lessons can be applied to working with the many other custom input syntax languages persistent throughout the nuclear industry.

Entanglement of excitons by acoustic guiding

A system is described that exhibits the functionality of a beam-splitter, typically an optical device that splits a beam of light in two. In this case, the beams are acoustic pulses and can lead to the creation of a Wannier-Mott exciton: a bound state of an electron and an electron hole whose attraction to each other is maintained by the electrostatic Coulomb force. This exciton beam-splitter is lossy (i.e., involves the dissipation of electrical or electromagnetic energy). Half of the time the exciton is radiated away. Nevertheless, if the exciton is not lost, the exciton is now in a superposition of two states that can be well separated in position. Four such beam-splitters can be used to make an exciton interferometer that uses the interference patterns from the interacting acoustic pulses to extract information.

Energy Efficiency and Indoor Environmental Quality Assessment Guide

This report provides thorough guidance when preparing for an energy and indoor environmental quality (IEQ) assessment. It includes step-by-step instructions, detailed insights, and practical examples for the various phases of an energy and IEQ assessment. IEQ encompasses indoor building conditions—such as air quality, thermal comfort, acoustics, and lighting— and is a growing field of interest among a diverse range of stakeholders (e.g., building owners and managers) due to the effects it has on occupant health and productivity. IEQ improvement strategies often provide overlapping opportunities for increasing building energy efficiency, creating a win-win situation for building operations.

Innovative Nuclear Materials Outboard-A Project Specimen Preparation Guide

The Innovative Nuclear Materials (INM) Program was recently established by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to develop advanced material technologies for use in nuclear reactors. The INM program is presently focused on researching in-core non-fueled materials for application in fast spectrum nuclear reactors. The widespread deployment of fast reactors continues to be a prominent aspiration for advanced nuclear technology developers. However, companies working to license these reactors have no choice but to rely on historic material technologies since further optimization and advancement of these materials is impeded by the lack of fast neutron irradiation test facilities. INM-OA is a non-fueled drop-in experiment which will irradiate material specimens of interest to fast reactor applications. This experiment will be irradiated at Idaho National Laboratory (INL) in the Advanced Test Reactor (ATR) outboard-A (OA) position during normal and high temperature steady state (HTSS) cycles. It will include material specimens supplied by members of the INM program and will utilize a cadmium-lined basket to filter out incident thermal neutrons, thus simulating a faster neutron energy spectrum. Material specimens will undergo post-irradiation examination including microscopy and mechanical testing. In addition to absorption reactions, fast neutrons cause microstructural damage in materials by atom displacement, which can cause exacerbated changes in physical properties and behavior. Thus, the data obtained from the INM-OA experiment will be crucial for understanding the engineering-scale behavior of reactor materials. This document is intended for the Principal Investigators providing samples for this project. Topics included are a general description of the experiment, the irradiation experiment/capsule design, sample geometries, number of samples to be provided, documentation to be provided, a brief list potentially useful characterization methods that can be leveraged at INL, and other miscellaneous requirements specific to this project. This document is intended for informational use only.

A Guide to Current Limiting and Stability with Grid-Forming Inverters

The electric power grid is changing. For many decades, the synchronous generator - an electromechanical device invented in 1887 - has been the workhorse and backbone of power grids across the globe. Our entire infrastructure is built around it. But times change, and so does the power grid. Since the early 21st century, we have seen a gradual shift in modern power grids away from synchronous generators to ones dominated by power electronic inverter-based resources (IBRs). Sources such as photovoltaics, wind turbines, battery storage, fuel cells, and other technologies like high-voltage DC transmission interconnections all rely on an inverter to connect and interface with the grid. They are increasingly being installed on the grid to augment, or even replace, traditional energy sources. This change is a fundamental shift that brings tremendous technical challenges and questions: Can a power grid remain stable with many more inverter-based resources? How do we avoid more blackouts on the grid? How do we keep the grid secure and resilient during disturbances? After all, power electronic inverters are nothing like the big, rotating, iron-and-copper machines that the grid heavily relies on. Many of these questions can be answered by using grid-forming (GFM) inverters, yet many research challenges remain. This document explores GFM inverters and how they can help stabilize the future grid, especially during disturbances and contingencies. It summarizes a two-year research and development fellowship program at NREL. We point interested readers to more detailed works developed during the project along the way. Let's dive in
