Surface Impedance of Nb$_3$Sn and YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{7-\sigma}$ in High Magnetic Fields

New potential rf applications of superconductors emerged with the need to operate in high dc magnetic fields (up to 16 T) where vortex motion dictates the response: the beam screen coating of the Future Circular Collider (FCC) [1] and haloscopes, i.e. rf cavities for the axions detection [2]. However, very few data are available in the required regimes. We present in this work measurements of the surface impedance Z up to 12 T on bulk Nb₃Sn and YBCO thin films grown by different techniques. The measurements are performed with a dielectric loaded resonator operating at 15 GHz. We obtained the vortex motion resistivity and extracted the high frequency vortex motion parameters [3]: the depinning frequency, the flux-flow resistivity and the pinning constant, as well as their temperature and field dependences. Substantial differences are highlighted in the high frequency pinning properties of the studied materials, providing useful information on possible improvements in view of applications. A comparison with the results obtained in the microwave frequency range at lower fields (up to 1 T) is given.

Methane Activation on Cu Containing Zeolite Catalysts (Final Report)

In order to increase the value of the light alkane ethane found in shale gas, we investigated the transformation of ethane into ethylene and aromatic hydrocarbons using zinc-containing microporous catalysts. We investigated the kinetics of the reaction, and identified various active sites for the ethane dehydrogenation and aromatization. In addition, we investigated iron-containing zeolites, as catalysts for the addition of methyl groups to small olefins containing 2, 3 and 4 carbon molecules. We determined the reaction mechanism, the identity of the active site, and details of the reaction kinetics. We concluded that the use of iron zeolites is very promising to upgrade small olefins (2-4 carbon species) into larger olefins (4-7 carbon species) that are more valuable as fuels and as petrochemical products.

Fundamental Understanding of Cu-zeolite SCR Catalyst Aging Mechanism (CRADA 452)

The CRADA between Cummins and Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) will focus on advanced emission control for high-efficiency engines. It will specifically focus on the following three areas: 1. Passive NOx absorbers - The purpose is to develop next generation materials that can be efficiently used to address the cold-operation, as driven by improved engine efficiency. 2. Oxidation of methane and short alkanes – The purpose is to address cold-operation emissions arising from CNG vehicles. 3. Improved understanding of particulates–the purpose is to understand how particulates are formed which will be used to develop strategies to address the tightening regulations and their enforcement for exhaust particulate matter. The first two areas will be based on PNNL’s technical leadership in the area of zeolite-based materials. The third area will have a shorter time scope to leverage the unique SPLAT capabilities at PNNL to help address Cummins’ needs in improving the understanding of particulates.

Maximizing Scrap Recycling by Designing Cu Tolerant Steel Compositions

Residual elements from scrap steel recycling, most notably copper, are known to result in hot shortness during thermomechanical processing and casting. As the concentration of copper and other residuals in steel scrap streams increases, Electric Arc Furnace (EAF) scrap recycling heats commonly use pig iron to dilute residuals below current limits. This work focuses on establishing residual element tolerant compositions and concomitant processing windows that can simultaneously mitigate issues from residuals during thermomechanical processing and, if possible, use these residuals to improve properties, yielding a more sustainable steel manufacturing pathway with a substantially smaller carbon footprint.

Updates to the n+ 63,65 Cu Angular Distributions [Slides]

The performance of the benchmark suite is very sensitive to changes in the angular distribution data. The quasi-differential measurements performed by Blain et al at RPI provide a valuable constraint. Furthermore, ENDF/B-VIII.0 disagrees with their measurements consistently at 300 keV (the transition between RRR and high energy). The next step is to conservatively adjust the Legendre coefficients near 300 keV, validating performance against both critical benchmarks and the RPI quasi-differential measurements.
