HCPerf: Driving Performance-Directed Hierarchical Coordination for Autonomous Vehicles

The rapid development of autonomous driving poses new research challenges to the on-vehicle computing system. In particular, the execution time of autonomous driving tasks highly depends on the specific driving environment. For instance, the execution time of configurable sensor fusion increases significantly as the scene becomes complex, which leads to end-to-end deadline misses from sensing to control and may cause accidents. Thus, a framework that can effectively utilize the system resources to guarantee the end-to-end deadlines of autonomous driving tasks as well as effectively prioritize the responsiveness and throughput of the control commands is crucial for autonomous driving. In this paper, we propose HCPerf, a performance-directed hierarchical coordination framework that intelligently coordinates the autonomous driving tasks with high execution time variation and complex dependencies according to the driving performance in real-time. Specifically, HCPerf mainly consists of two coordinators. The internal coordinator intelligently schedules the tasks according to the driving performance of the vehicle in order to help them meet the end-to-end deadlines while well prioritizing the responsiveness and throughput of the control commands. At the same time, the external coordinator dynamically tunes the rates of tasks according to the schedulability in order to efficiently utilize the system resource. We conduct extensive experiments on both simulation and hardware testbeds with the representative autonomous driving application. The results show that HCPerf can effectively improve the driving performance by 7.69%-45.94% in different driving scenarios.

Reinforcement-Learning-Based Smart Water Heater Control: An Actual Deployment

Utilizing smart control algorithms for electric water heaters (EWHs) is essential for fully harnessing the demand response (DR) potential of EWHs. For this reason, the use of reinforcement learning (RL) algorithms for EWHs has received increasing attention in recent years. However, existing RL approaches are either simulation-based or use pretrained RL agents. To this end, this paper presents the real-world deployment of a set of model-free RL approaches that aim to minimize the electricity cost of a EWH under a time-of-use electricity pricing policy using standard DR commands (e.g., shed, load up). The experiment results showed that the RL agents can help save electricity cost in the range of 11% to 14% compared to the baseline operation. This study demonstrated that RL-based EWH controllers can be deployed in real world without any prior training and can still save electricity cost.

Analysis of Transformer Magnetizing Reactance Using Describing Function in Direct Power Control of Back-to-Back Modular Multilevel Converter with Advanced Grid Support

This paper presents a Port Controlled Hamiltonian based direct power control architecture for a back-to-back modular multilevel converter system connecting two ac sources at different frequencies. The system features advanced grid support functionalities based on IEEE 1547-2018, implemented on the inverter side. The rectifier side controller ensures reference following for active and/or reactive powers and maintains the commanded dc bus voltage. The inverter side controller ensures power command following for active and reactive powers. The proposed control architecture is designed to suppress second harmonic oscillations in powers during unbalanced grid voltage sags by dynamically adjusting the currents on each ac side. This also ensures effective elimination of any second harmonic oscillations in the equivalent dc bus voltage. Validation is performed on an OPAL-RT real-time platform with case studies on unbalanced and balanced sags, demonstrating the controller's effectiveness during real time implementation. A reduced-scale laboratory prototype further verifies these case studies, with experimental results for balanced sags due to grid simulator limitations. The results confirm the robustness and efficiency of the proposed control strategy in ensuring stable and reliable operation under various grid conditions.

Grid Forming Inverter: Laboratory-Scale Hardware Test Bed Setup and Weak Grid Operation

In recent times, the concept of grid forming inverters has gained popularity. Grid forming inverters have proven to be a promising alternative to the grid following inverters. In this paper, we present the hardware test bed implementation of grid forming inverter in islanding mode as well as in grid connected mode. The control structure includes inverter-level inner current control and outer voltage control, and plant-level P - f and Q - V droop control. The Q - V droop provides the voltage command, whereas P - f droop provides the frequency command and is also key for the synchronization process. While it is straightforward to set up the test bed for the islanded operation, it is a challenging process to set up the grid-forming inverter in the grid-connected mode. We present the key technologies and demonstrate the start-up process and weak grid operation using the hardware experiment results. Results from EMT model developed in MATLAB/SimPowerSystems are also presented for side-by-side comparison.

Approximating Trajectory Constraints With Machine Learning – Microgrid Islanding With Frequency Constraints

Here, we introduce deep earning aided constraint encoding to tackle the frequency-constraint microgrid scheduling problem. The nonlinear function between system operating condition and frequency nadir is approximated by using a neural network, which admits an exact mixed-integer formulation (MIP). This formulation is then integrated with the scheduling problem to encode the frequency constraint. With the stronger representation power of the neural network, the resulting commands can ensure adequate frequency response in a realistic setting in addition to islanding success. The proposed method is validated on a modified 33-node system. Successful islanding with a secure response is simulated under the scheduled commands using a detailed three-phase model in Simulink. The advantages of our model are particularly remarkable when the inertia emulation functions from wind turbine generators are considered.

Human-in-the-Loop Motion Control of a Two-DOF Hydraulic Backhoe Powered by the Hybrid Hydraulic Electric Architecture (HHEA)

Abstract The Hybrid Hydraulic-Electric Architecture (HHEA) combines the respective power density and control advantages of hydraulic and electric actuation to save energy for off-road vehicles. It uses a set of selectable common pressure rails to transmit the majority of power and electric actuation to modulate that power. As it is critical that off-road vehicles can perform tasks dexterously and exactly as commanded by the operator, the switchings between discrete pressure rails pose a potential challenge for smooth and precise motion. A control strategy consisting of a backstepping nominal control and least norm transition control has previously been developed to address this issue. It has been tested on 1 degree of freedom (DOF) testbeds where known trajectories were able to be tracked precisely. This paper presents the implementation of the HHEA motion control strategy on a 2-DOF backhoe operated by a human operator via a 2-DOF joystick. Unlike previous studies, the duty cycle is unknown beforehand and the decision to change pressure rails is taken in real-time. The efficacy of the motion control strategy has been validated experimentally. Several strategies to improve the user interface: control in workspace coordinates, pressure feedback, and velocity field-based task specification, have also been implemented and demonstrated to make operating the multiple DOF, HHEA actuated machine more intuitive to novice operators.

Simulation INsight and Analysis

Sina is a tool set for modern scientific data management that provides flexible, light-weight support of non-bulk data capture for retention in and queries against SQL and noSQL data stores. HPC simulations traditionally maintain their data in files. Extracting data of interest for subsequent analysis then requires the time-consuming process of traversing directories and scraping data from files in a variety of formats. Sina facilitates capturing relevant data during execution or post-processing of simulation runs for retention in and queries from a modern data store. The tools are sufficiently general to allow for the inclusion of new fields as scientists learn more about their data. Libraries, currently in C++ and Python, and a command line interface (CLI) are provided. Sina's flexibility starts with a general schema, in JSON, for the collection of non-bulk simulation data. JSON provides a flexible, human-readable representation of the data that of interest. Sina currently has a C++ library for simulations to write data to and read from a schema-compliant file for subsequent ingestion into one of the supported data stores. However, applications are free to write their data directly into a schema-compliant file. Python packages provide data ingestion, management, query, and export capabilities. A command line interface (CLI) provides simplified access to these features. A common application programming interface (API) is used to maintain and query data in any of the supported data stores, which are currently limited to SQL and Apache Cassandra (a column store). Tutorials, demonstrations, and examples illustrate aspects of the process using scripts and Jupyter notebooks.

Behavior Engine - Umbra Package

The Umbra Behavior Engine allows simulated Umbra characters to autonomously make decisions to accomplish goals set for them in a specific scenario. These goals are based on commands given to characters and reactions to stimuli in the simulated environment of the characters. When the character responds to the command issued to him, instead of running a single behavior, he runs a suite of behaviors where only one is active at a time. Other behaviors in the suite include reaction behaviors that can be triggered due to detected objects and activity in the characters' environment. BESTEST-GSR (Building Energy Simulation Test - Generation Simulation and Reporting) 2023 [SWR 18-23]

Building Energy Simulation Test (BESTEST) is an NREL-developed method to validate the qualitative performance of different whole building simulations engines relative to each other. https://www.nrel.gov/docs/legosti/old/6231.pdf The purpose of this repository is to generate BESTEST test case models, run simulations, and populate data for ASHRAE Standard 140 reporting spreadsheets for EnergyPlus® based whole building simulation tools. It was originally setup for 2014 version of Standard 140. In May of 2022 it was updated to the 2020 version of Standard 140. This update included updates and additions to existing test suites, the bulk of which was in Section 5.2 (Building Thermal Envelope and Fabric Load Tests). We did not add Section 5.5 Airside HVAC Equipment Performance, but we hope to add that later in 2022. At some point we also hope to add Section 5.2.4 ground modeling, which is currently excluded. Supported Tools The default IDF generation is based on the OpenStudio® CLI, but the workflow supports a 'Bring your own IDF' use case. Additionally, for non-EnergyPlus® based tools the post processing scripts can be used if simulation results are provided as a CSV file. The scripts on this repository should work on Mac, Windows, and Linux. Dependencies Install OpenStudio® 3.4.0 make sure command line can recognize the 'openstudio' command This includes EnergyPlus® 22.1 Install Ruby on your system if it isn't already setup. 2.7 is used for development but other versions may work Since OpenStudio has its own embedded Ruby, which is used for running measures, you don't necessarily have to use a version of Ruby supported by OpenStudio. Install RubyXL Ruby gem This is used to modify Microsoft Excel spreadsheets Install Parallel Ruby gem This allows the CLI to run simulations in parallel

The Exascale Framework for High Fidelity coupled Simulations (EFFIS): Enabling whole device modeling in fusion science

We present the Exascale Framework for High Fidelity coupled Simulations (EFFIS), a workflow and code coupling framework developed as part of the Whole Device Modeling Application (WDMApp) in the Exascale Computing Project. EFFIS consists of a library, command line utilities, and a collection of run-time daemons. Together, these software products enable users to easily compose and execute workflows that include: strong or weak coupling, in situ (or offline) analysis/visualization/monitoring, command-and-control actions, remote dashboard integration, and more. We describe WDMApp physics coupling cases and computer science requirements that motivate the design of the EFFIS framework. Furthermore, we explain the essential enabling technology that EFFIS leverages: ADIOS for performant data movement, PerfStubs/TAU for performance monitoring, and an advanced COUPLER for transforming coupling data from its native format to the representation needed by another application. Finally, we demonstrate EFFIS using coupled multi-simulation WDMApp workflows and exemplify how the framework supports the project’s needs. We show that EFFIS and its associated services for data movement, visualization, and performance collection does not introduce appreciable overhead to the WDMApp workflow and that the resource-dominant application’s idle time while waiting for data is minimal.

April 2020 Darshan counters from the Summit supercomputer

This dataset is the Darshan counters collected from the Summit supercomputer in a month of April 2020. 1. Description of methods used for collection/generation of data: Job submitted on Summit HPC system when completed successfully and has made I/O calls (captured by Darshan tool) writes a Darshan log file on alpine filesystem. One job can have multiple `jsrun` commands and Darshan will generate separate logs each log corresponding to an `jsrun` command, so a job can have one or more Darshan logs associated with it. 2. Methods for processing the data: To process the data, we first use `darshan-util` tool to parse the Darshan logs. Then we restructure the logs and merge data from multiple Darshan logs if they belong to the same Summit job.

Dual-Fuel Ammonia Equivalence Ratio Sweep Data

Ammonia (NH3) has garnered significant interest as an alternative fuel for meeting international emissions reduction mandates in sectors with high weight and distance requirements, such as shipping. Technical barriers and unanswered questions remain on the combustion strategies that can maximize ammonia utilization and minimize emissions. Prior research studies at the US Department of Energy’s Oak Ridge National Laboratory have shown strong performance with NH3 under dual-fuel mode using conventional diesel combustion (CDC) manifold air pressure settings. Diesel airflow was initially used to simplify retrofitting (no turbocharger modification), which resulted in air-fuel equivalence ratios (λ) greater than 1.5. To characterize potential improvements in dual-fuel NH3 combustion performance at richer in-cylinder conditions, a global λ sweep compared the use of early (E-pilot) and late (L-pilot) single diesel injections. The experiments were conducted at 1200 RPM and 12.8 ± 0.2 bar (75 % load), and λ was varied by decreasing the commanded air flow to the engine at greater than 90 % ammonia energy substitution level. A diesel injection timing sweep was conducted for both the injection strategies at fixed λ, and the timing with the lowest engine-out N2O emissions was identified. The results indicated an optimal balance between CO2,eq and thermal efficiency benefits both E-pilot and L-pilot injection strategy cases compared with CDC at a λ of 1.4. The indicated nitrogen-based emissions exhibited a strong correlation to the ratio of CA5–50 and ignition delay for L-pilot, but no apparent trend emerged for the E-pilot injection strategy at the tested boundary conditions. This dataset includes the raw experimental data and documentation of the experiment conditions and methods.

Data and scripts associated with the manuscript evaluating the hydrologic responses of the Pacific Northwest watersheds to wildfires (v2)

This data package is associated with the publication “Evaluating Post-fire Watershed Response to Varying Burn Severity and Precipitation Regimes Using Fully-distributed and Integrated Hydrologic Models” submitted to Journal of Hydrology (Li et al. 2025). In this study, we employed the Advanced Terrestrial Simulator (ATS), an integrated watershed model that couples surface flow, subsurface flow, and canopy biophysical processes, to investigate post-fire hydrologic responses in a few selected watersheds with varying burn severity. The data package contains the required input data (meteorological forcing, Leaf Area Index, wildfire burn severities, etc.) to run the model, configuration files, the Jupyter notebooks in Python to pre-process and post-process data, the figures in the manuscript, and the modeling output files. The variables include watershed-averaged evapotranspiration, watershed-averaged surface/subsurface/canopy water content, and river discharge at watershed outlet. The data package contains a file-level metadata that lists and describes all the files contained in the data package (ATS_flmd.csv), a data dictionary file that defines columns headers across all csv files contained in the data package (ATS_dd.csv), a data package level readme file (the current file), and four zipped folders. The ‘data’ folder provides data needed to run the model in .h5, .i2s, .xyz, .shp, and .exo formats. The sub-folders are for each data types. The ‘model’ folder provides input files (.xml format) and essential model outputs. Each sub-folder provides the files from each simulated watershed. The ‘notebooks’ folder provides the Jupyter notebooks (.ipynb format) for pre- and post- processing model files, and for producing the figures in the manuscript. The ‘figures’ folder provides the figures associated with manuscript in .pdf and .png formats. The ‘model’ folder and the ‘data’ folder have been split into 5GB-large pieces using the Linux command ‘split -b 5120m model.zip model.zip.’ and ‘split -b 5120m data.zip data.zip.’, respectively. They can be merged back using the Linux command ‘cat model.zip.* > model.zip’ and ‘cat data.zip.* > data.zip’, respectively.

NEON AOP Survey of Upper East River CO Watersheds: Waveform LiDAR Binary Data

The waveform Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) data in this package were generated through a National Ecological Observatory Network Airborne Observation Platform (NEON AOP) acquisition over watersheds of interest surrounding Crested Butte, Colorado. The remote sensing imagery acquired by the NEON AOP supports an interdisciplinary project on hydrology, biogeochemistry, and ecosystem functioning in a snow-dominated headwater environment. These waveform LiDAR data enable spatially continuous estimation of vegetation structure parameters to facilitate analyses of the major environmental drivers of structural and compositional variability. The package contains 97 compressed file archives in 7-zip (.7z) format, each corresponding to one acquisition flightpath. Within each .7z archive is a set of constituent files describing properties of the LiDAR waveforms, such as return intensity, geolocation, outgoing pulse and other behavior of the sensor and signals. Once downloaded, the files must first be unzipped using the widely distributed command-line software utility 7z, using the command '7z x \[filename\].7z \[target_directory\]'. All files within the .7z archives can be opened in IDL, MatLab, or the open-source R statistical computing environment. Further details about the data package are in the attached user guide (neon_aop_crbu_waveformlidar_userguide.pdf). This work was supported by the Watershed Function Science Focus Area at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory funded by the US Department of Energy, Office of Science, Biological and Environmental Research under Contract No. DE-AC02-05CH11231.

Snohomish Public Utility District MESA 2: An Assessment of Flow Battery Energy Storage System Technical Performance

This report investigates the technical performance of the 2.2 MW, 8 MWh MESA 2 advanced vanadium flow battery energy storage system (FBESS), consisting of four 0.55 MW, 2 MWh strings, based on a number of baseline and use case tests. The FBESS is located at the Everett, Washington substation and owned by SnoPUD. The FBESS was procured by SnoPUD with matching funds by the Washington Clean Energy. Baseline tests were intended to assess the general technical capability of the FBESS (e.g., stored energy capacity, ramp rate performance, ability to track varying charge/discharge commands, direct current (DC) battery internal resistance). Use case tests were used to examine the performance of the FBESS while engaged in specific grid services (e.g., arbitrage, power factor correction). The project measured and/or calculated parameters that are important for understanding FBESS performance when subjected to actual field operation for achieving economic benefits, e.g., round trip efficiency (RTE) with and without rest, with and without auxiliary loads, auxiliary power consumption, signal command tracking, temperature trends during operation, parasitic power loss unaccounted by auxiliary load during rest, and state of charge (SOC) excursions. These baseline and use case parameters were analyzed using recorded test results. In addition, the results and lessons presented herein are also beneficial for any task or effort that needs technical assessment on similar and different types of FBESS based on technical specifications and/or field deployment results, since the assessment methodology remains the same.
