Evidence of Quadrupole and Octupole Deformations in Zr 96 + Zr 96 and Ru 96 + Ru 96 Collisions at Ultrarelativistic Energies

In the hydrodynamic model description of heavy-ion collisions, the elliptic flow v 2 and triangular flow v 3 are sensitive to the quadrupole deformation β 2 and octupole deformation β 3 of the colliding nuclei. The relations between v n and β n have recently been clarified and were found to follow a simple parametric form. The STAR Collaboration has just published precision v n data from isobaric Ru 96 + Ru 96 and Zr 96 + Zr 96 collisions, where they observe large differences in central collisions v 2 , Ru > v 2 , Zr and v 3 , Ru < v 3 , Zr . Using a transport model simulation, we show that these orderings are a natural consequence of $\beta_{2,Ru} \gg \beta_{2,Zr}$ and $\beta_{3,Ru} \ll \beta_{3,Zr}$ We reproduce the centrality dependence of the v 2 ratio qualitatively and v 3 ratio quantitatively and extract values of β 2 and β 3 that are consistent with those measured at low-energy nuclear structure experiments. STAR data provide the first direct evidence of strong octupole correlations in the ground state of Zr 96 in heavy-ion collisions. Our analysis demonstrates that flow measurements in high-energy, heavy-ion collisions, especially using isobaric systems, are a new precision tool to study nuclear structure physics.

Measurements of H Λ 3 and H Λ 4 Lifetimes and Yields in Au + Au Collisions in the High Baryon Density Region

We report precision measurements of hypernuclei $^3_ΛH$ and $^4_ΛH$ lifetimes obtained from Au + Au collisions at $\sqrt{sNN}$ = 3.0 GeV and 7.2 GeV collected by the STAR experiment at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider, and the first measurement of $^3_ΛH$ and $^4_ΛH$ midrapidity yields in Au + Au collisions at $\sqrt{sNN}$ = 3.0 GeV. $^3_ΛH$ and $^4_ΛH$, being the two simplest bound states composed of hyperons and nucleons, are cornerstones in the field of hypernuclear physics. Their lifetimes are measured to be 221 ± 15 (stat) ± 19 (syst) ps for $^3_ΛH$ and 218 ± 6 (stat) ± 13 (syst) ps for $^4_ΛH$. The p T -integrated yields of $^3_ΛH$ and $^4_ΛH$ are presented in different centrality and rapidity intervals. It is observed that the shape of the rapidity distribution of $4_ΛH$ is different for 0%–10% and 10%–50% centrality collisions. Thermal model calculations, using the canonical ensemble for strangeness, describes the $^3_ΛH$ yield well, while underestimating the $^4_ΛH$ yield. Transport models, combining baryonic mean-field and coalescence (jam) or utilizing dynamical cluster formation via baryonic interactions (phqmd) for light nuclei and hypernuclei production, approximately describe the measured $^3_ΛH$ and $^4_ΛH$ yields. Our measurements provide means to precisely assess our understanding of the fundamental baryonic interactions with strange quarks, which can impact our understanding of more complicated systems involving hyperons, such as the interior of neutron stars or exotic hypernuclei.

Beam Energy Dependence of Fifth- and Sixth-Order Net-Proton Number Fluctuations in Au + Au Collisions at RHIC

We report the beam energy and collision centrality dependence of fifth and sixth order cumulants (C 5 , C 6 ) and factorial cumulants (κ 5 , κ 6 ) of net-proton and proton distributions, from $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$=3-200 GeV Au+Au collisions at RHIC. The net-proton cumulant ratios generally follow the hierarchy expected from QCD thermodynamics, except for the case of collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 3 GeV. C 6 /C 2 for 0-40\% centrality collisions is increasingly negative with decreasing $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$, while it is positive for the lowest $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ studied. These observed negative signs are consistent with QCD calculations (at baryon chemical potential, μ B ≤ 110 MeV) that include a crossover quark-hadron transition. In addition, for $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$≥ 11.5 GeV, the measured proton κ n , within uncertainties, does not support the two-component shape of proton distributions that would be expected from a first-order phase transition. Taken in combination, the hyper-order proton number fluctuations suggest that the structure of QCD matter at high baryon density, μ B ~750 MeV ($\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 3 GeV) is starkly different from those at vanishing μ B ~20MeV ($\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 200 GeV and higher).

Observation of Directed Flow of Hypernuclei $^3_Λ\text{H}$ and $^4_Λ\text{H}$ in $\sqrt{s_{\text{NN}}}$ = 3 GeV Au + Au Collisions at RHIC

We report here the first observation of directed flow ($v_1$) of the hypernuclei $^3_Λ\text{H}$ and $^4_Λ\text{H}$ in mid-central Au + Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{\text{NN}}}$ = 3 GeV at RHIC. These data are taken as part of the beam energy scan program carried out by the STAR experiment. From 165 × 10 6 events in 5%–40% centrality, about 8400 $^3_Λ\text{H}$ and 5200 $^4_Λ\text{H}$ candidates are reconstructed through two- and three-body decay channels. In this work, we observe that these hypernuclei exhibit significant directed flow. Comparing to that of light nuclei, it is found that the midrapidity $v_1$ slopes of $^3_Λ\text{H}$ and $^4_Λ\text{H}$ follow baryon number scaling, implying that the coalescence is the dominant mechanism for these hypernuclei production in the 3 GeV Au + Au collisions.

First Measurement of Antideuteron Number Fluctuations at Energies Available at the Large Hadron Collider

The first measurement of event-by-event antideuteron number fluctuations in high energy heavy-ion collisions is presented. The measurements are carried out at midrapidity (|η|<0.8) as a function of collision centrality in Pb-Pb collisions at $\sqrt{^sNN}$=5.02 TeV using the ALICE detector. A significant negative correlation between the produced antiprotons and antideuterons is observed in all collision centralities. The results are compared with a state-of-the-art coalescence calculation. While it describes the ratio of higher order cumulants of the antideuteron multiplicity distribution, it fails to describe quantitatively the magnitude of the correlation between antiproton and antideuteron production. On the other hand, thermal-statistical model calculations describe all the measured observables within uncertainties only for correlation volumes that are different with respect to those describing proton yields and a similar measurement of net-proton number fluctuations.

Measurement of the J / ψ Polarization with Respect to the Event Plane in Pb-Pb Collisions at the LHC

We study the polarization of inclusive J/ψ produced in Pb-Pb collisions at $\sqrt{^sNN}$ = 5.02 TeV at the LHC in the dimuon channel, via the measurement of the angular distribution of its decay products. We perform the study in the rapidity region 2.5 < y < 4, for three transverse momentum intervals (2 < p T < 4, 4 < p T < 6, 6 < p T < 10 GeV/c) and as a function of the centrality of the collision for 2 < p T < 6 GeV/c. For the first time, the polarization is measured with respect to the event plane of the collision, by considering the angle between the positive-charge decay muon in the J/ψ rest frame and the axis perpendicular to the event-plane vector in the laboratory system. A small transverse polarization is measured, with a significance reaching 3.9σ at low p T and for intermediate centrality values. The polarization could be connected with the behavior of the quark-gluon plasma, formed in Pb-Pb collisions, as a rotating fluid with large vorticity, as well as with the existence of a strong magnetic field in the early stage of its formation.

ψ ( 2 S ) Suppression in Pb-Pb Collisions at the LHC

The production of the ψ ( 2 S ) charmonium state was measured with ALICE in Pb-Pb collisions at s NN = 5.02 TeV , in the dimuon decay channel. A significant signal was observed for the first time at LHC energies down to zero transverse momentum, at forward rapidity ( 2.5 < y < 4 ). The measurement of the ratio of the inclusive production cross sections of the ψ ( 2 S ) and J / ψ resonances is reported as a function of the centrality of the collisions and of transverse momentum, in the region p T < 12 GeV / c . The results are compared with the corresponding measurements in p p collisions, by forming the double ratio [ σ ψ ( 2 S ) / σ J / ψ ] Pb − Pb / [ σ ψ ( 2 S ) / σ J / ψ ] p p . It is found that in Pb-Pb collisions the ψ ( 2 S ) is suppressed by a factor of ∼ 2 with respect to the J / ψ . The ψ ( 2 S ) nuclear modification factor R AA was also obtained as a function of both centrality and p T . The results show that the ψ ( 2 S ) resonance yield is strongly suppressed in Pb-Pb collisions, by a factor of up to ∼ 3 with respect to p p . Comparisons of cross section ratios with previous Super Proton Synchrotron findings by the NA50 experiment and of R AA with higher- p T results at LHC energy are also reported. These results and the corresponding comparisons with calculations of transport and statistical models address questions on the presence and properties of charmonium states in the quark-gluon plasma formed in nuclear collisions at the LHC. © 2024 CERN, for the ALICE Collaboration 2024 CERN

Azimuthal Angle Correlations of Muons Produced via Heavy-Flavor Decays in 5.02 TeV Pb+Pb and pp Collisions with the ATLAS Detector

Angular correlations between heavy quarks provide a unique probe of the quark-gluon plasma created in ultrarelativistic heavy-ion collisions. Results are presented of a measurement of the azimuthal angle correlations between muons originating from semileptonic decays of heavy quarks produced in 5.02 TeV Pb+Pb and pp collisions at the LHC. The muons are measured with transverse momenta and pseudorapidities satisfying p$^μ_T$ > 4 GeV and |η μ | < 2.4, respectively. The distributions of azimuthal angle separation Δ⁢Φ for muon pairs having pseudorapidity separation |Δη| > 0.8, are measured in different Pb +Pb centrality intervals and compared to the same distribution measured in pp collisions at the same center-of-mass energy. Results are presented separately for muon pairs with opposite-sign charges, same-sign charges, and all pairs. A clear peak is observed in all Δ⁢Φ distributions at Δ⁢Φ ~ π, consistent with the parent heavy-quark pairs being produced via hard-scattering processes. The widths of that peak, characterized using Cauchy-Lorentz fits to the Δ⁢Φ distributions, are found to not vary significantly as a function of Pb +Pb collision centrality and are similar for pp and Pb +Pb collisions. This observation will provide important constraints on theoretical descriptions of heavy-quark interactions with the quark-gluon plasma.

Observation of the ϒ ( 3 S ) Meson and Suppression of ϒ States in Pb-Pb Collisions at s N N = 5.02 TeV

The production of ϒ ( 2 S ) and ϒ ( 3 S ) mesons in lead-lead (Pb-Pb) and proton-proton ( p p ) collisions is studied in their dimuon decay channel using the CMS detector at the LHC. The ϒ ( 3 S ) meson is observed for the first time in Pb-Pb collisions, with a significance above 5 standard deviations. The ratios of yields measured in Pb-Pb and p p collisions are reported for both the ϒ ( 2 S ) and ϒ ( 3 S ) mesons, as functions of transverse momentum and Pb-Pb collision centrality. These ratios, when appropriately scaled, are significantly less than unity, indicating a suppression of ϒ yields in Pb-Pb collisions. This suppression increases from peripheral to central Pb-Pb collisions. Furthermore, the suppression is stronger for ϒ ( 3 S ) mesons compared to ϒ ( 2 S ) mesons, extending the pattern of sequential suppression of quarkonium states in nuclear collisions previously seen for the J / ψ , ψ ( 2 S ) , ϒ ( 1 S ) , and ϒ ( 2 S ) mesons. © 2024 CERN, for the CMS Collaboration 2024 CERN

Ground State and Hidden Symmetry of Magic-Angle Graphene at Even Integer Filling

In magic angle twisted bilayer graphene (TBG), electron-electron interactions play a central role, resulting in correlated insulating states at certain integer fillings. Identifying the nature of these insulators is a central question, and it is potentially linked to the relatively high-temperature superconductivity observed in the same devices. Here, we address this question using a combination of analytical strong-coupling arguments and a comprehensive Hartree-Fock numerical calculation, which includes the effect of remote bands. The ground state we obtain at charge neutrality is an unusual ordered state, which we call the Kramers intervalley-coherent (K-IVC) insulator. In its simplest form, the K-IVC order exhibits a pattern of alternating circulating currents that triples the graphene unit cell, leading to an “orbital magnetization density wave.” Although translation and time-reversal symmetry are broken, a combined “Kramers” time-reversal symmetry is preserved. Our analytic arguments are built on first identifying an approximate U⁡(4) × U⁡(4) symmetry, resulting from the remarkable properties of the TBG band structure, which helps select a low-energy manifold of states that are further split to favor the K-IVC state. This low-energy manifold is also found in the Hartree-Fock numerical calculation. We show that symmetry-lowering perturbations can stabilize other insulators and the semimetallic state, and we discuss the ground state at half-filling and give a comparison with experiments.

Observation of the Electromagnetic Field Effect via Charge-Dependent Directed Flow in Heavy-Ion Collisions at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider

The deconfined quark-gluon plasma (QGP) created in relativistic heavy-ion collisions enables the exploration of the fundamental properties of matter under extreme conditions. Noncentral collisions can produce strong magnetic fields on the order of 10 18 G , which offers a probe into the electrical conductivity of the QGP. In particular, quarks and antiquarks carry opposite charges and receive contrary electromagnetic forces that alter their momenta. This phenomenon can be manifested in the collective motion of final-state particles, specifically in the rapidity-odd directed flow, denoted as v 1 ( y ) . Here, we present the charge-dependent measurements of d v 1 / d y near midrapidities for π ± , K ± , and p ( p ¯ ) in Au + Au and isobar ( Ru 44 96 + Ru 44 96 and Zr 40 96 + Zr 40 96 ) collisions at s NN = 200 GeV , and in Au + Au collisions at 27 GeV, recorded by the STAR detector at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider. The combined dependence of the v 1 signal on collision system, particle species, and collision centrality can be qualitatively and semiquantitatively understood as several effects on constituent quarks. While the results in central events can be explained by the u and d quarks transported from initial-state nuclei, those in peripheral events reveal the impacts of the electromagnetic field on the QGP. Our data put valuable constraints on the electrical conductivity of the QGP in theoretical calculations. Published by the American Physical Society 2024

Coexisting paramagnetic spins and long-range magnetic order in Ba4⁢(Ru0.92⁢Ir0.08)3⁢O10

We investigate the effect of dilute Ir substitution on the magnetism of the trimer-based ruthenate Ba4⁢Ru3⁢O10 using neutron diffraction, magnetic susceptibility measurements, first-principles calculations, and atomistic simulations. Neutron diffraction shows that Ir doping preserves the zigzag antiferromagnetic structure and the ordered-moment magnitude of the parent compound, in which the moments reside exclusively on the two outer Ru(2) sites of each Ru3⁢O12 trimer, while the central Ru(1) site remains nonmagnetic. The Néel temperature is reduced from ∼105 to 84.0(1) K upon 8% Ir substitution, while magnetic susceptibility reveals a pronounced low-temperature Curie-like upturn, indicating the coexistence of paramagnetic spins with long-range antiferromagnetic order. Density-functional calculations show that Ir preferentially occupies the central Ru(1) site, which disrupts the exchange pathways of the affected Ru3⁢O12 trimer state. Atomistic simulations incorporating this paramagnetic dilution reproduce the suppressed ordering temperature and the coexistence of ordered and paramagnetic components.

Measurement of the azimuthal anisotropy of charged particles in sNN=5.36TeV O16+O16 and Ne20+Ne20 collisions with the ATLAS detector

This paper presents the first measurements of the azimuthal anisotropy coefficients , which quantify the -order Fourier modulation of charged-particle azimuthal distributions, for in and collisions recorded with the ATLAS detector at the CERN Large Hadron Collider in 2025. The coefficients are measured as a function of transverse momentum ( ), collision centrality, and event multiplicity. They are extracted using two complementary methods: two-particle correlations with a template-fit subtraction of short-range nonflow contributions, and four-particle subevent cumulants, which intrinsically suppress nonflow effects and provide sensitivity to flow fluctuations. The results show a clear hierarchy and a nonmonotonic dependence on , reaching a maximum around , consistent with trends observed in heavy-ion collisions. Detailed comparisons between the two collision systems reveal an enhanced in central collisions, consistent with theory expectations based on the predicted prolate deformation of neon nuclei, in contrast to the slightly tetrahedral structure predicted for oxygen. The four-particle cumulant results highlight strong event-by-event fluctuations and provide the greatest sensitivity to nuclear shape effects. These measurements can place new constraints on the initial geometry and the hydrodynamic response in light-ion collisions, offering valuable input for models of nuclear structure.

Hund's coupling governed orbital-selective superconductivity in Ba 1−𝑥 ⁢K 𝑥⁢ Fe 2 ⁢As 2

Understanding how strong electronic correlations shape superconductivity remains a central challenge in quantum materials. In multiorbital systems, correlations driven by Hund's coupling can differentiate the behavior of individual orbitals, producing the so-called Hund's metal state. How such orbital-selectivity also governs superconducting pairing, however, has remained largely unexplored experimentally. Here, in this study, we use high-resolution angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy to systematically map the superconducting gap structure across the phase diagram of the representative iron-based superconductor Ba 1−x K x Fe 2 As 2 . We find that superconductivity evolves in a strongly orbital-dependent manner: the gap associated with the d xy orbital collapses beyond optimal doping while pairing on the d xz /d yz orbitals persists. This behavior mirrors the orbital-selective correlations observed in the normal state and reveals a direct connection between Hund's metal physics and the superconducting pairing landscape. Our results demonstrate that superconducting gaps themselves can serve as a sensitive probe of orbital-dependent correlations and suggest that Hund's coupling plays a central role in shaping pairing in multiorbital superconductors.

A Novel Decentralized PWM Interleaving Technique for Ripple Minimization in Series-Stacked DC-DC Converters

Cascaded dc-dc converters are commonly used in applications where distributed energy sources or loads are connected to elevated voltage levels for power transfer. In such systems, it is advantageous to minimize the ripple on the bus current and voltage by proper phase shifting of the pulse-width modulation (PWM) pulses among the converters via a method known as interleaving. Existing approaches use either a centralized controller or separate communication lines among the stacked converters to control their relative PWM switch transitions. The key drawbacks are that these methods entail significant wiring, the central controller acts as a single point of failure, and implementation on very large numbers of units is impractical. In this paper, we introduce a decentralized interleaving control (DIC) strategy that acts on local current measurements at every converter and achieves communication-free PWM interleaving among the series-stacked converters. The proposed controller is simple in structure and is shown to converge asymptotically to the interleaved state irrespective of clock drifts among the digital signal processors. Experimental results are provided for a system of five series-connected converters showing a 10× reduction in the current ripple compared to normal operation.

Decentralized Interleaving of Cascaded H-Bridge Multi-Level Converters

This document proposes a simple method to decentralize the interleaving for cascaded H bridge (CHB) converters. In the proposed approach, a single signal sent from the Central controller (CC) to Local Controllers (LC) contains information about the desired pulse width and is synchronized with respect to other LC. While centralized controllers need individual signals for each of the CHB modules, the proposed method requires a single signal per phase which decreases the number of PWM channels needed. A detailed explanation of the proposed method is presented. Experimental results are presented that show the interleaving of two CHB modules for an example DC to AC application.

Data-driven Distributed Learning of Multi-agent Systems: A Koopman Operator Approach

Koopman operator theory provides a model-free technique for studying nonlinear dynamical systems purely from data. Since the Koopman operator is infinite-dimensional, researchers have developed several methods that provide a finite-dimensional approximation of the Koopman operator so that it can be applied for practical use cases. One common thing with most of the methods is that their solutions are obtained by solving a centralized minimization problem. In this work, we treat the dynamical system to be a multi-agent system and propose an algorithm to compute the finite-dimensional approximation of the Koopman operator in a distributed manner using the knowledge of the topology of the underlying multi-agent system. The proposed distributed approach is shown to be equivalent to the centralized learning problem and results in a sparse Koopman whose block structure mimics the Laplacian of the multi-agent system. Extensive simulation studies illustrate the proposed framework on the network of oscillators and the IEEE 68 bus system.
