Ontologies at Work: Analyzing Information Requirements for Model Predictive Control in Buildings

Model Predictive Control (MPC) has shown significant potential for improving energy efficiency, indoor air quality and occupant comfort of buildings. MPC-based control algorithms have also shown the ability to shift loads and optimize for multiple objectives, including but not limited to reducing the green-house gas emissions, energy costs and peak demand. However, one of the main implementation challenges of these control algorithms is the integration and configuration effort needed to deploy a supervisory MPC controller in a building. By assigning standardized references to information sources and control points in buildings, existing studies have shown that semantic ontologies and corresponding queries have the potential to ease the deployment of such controllers. Yet, the use of semantic information to ease the deployment processes of MPC controllers is still limited. In this paper, we review three MPC experiments and synthesize the information requirements of these optimization problems. We then turn to existing and upcoming semantic ontologies such as Brick, SAREF and ASHRAE Standard 223 to represent these requirements, evaluating their potential to support the implementation of an MPC controller. This investigation concludes with a discussion of existing opportunities and open questions that the community should explore to support more streamlined MPC implementations.

Robotic automation of maintenance work in nuclear power plants a cross-sector survey and roadmap

Nuclear power plants face increasing cost pressures, workforce constraints (aging workforce and skilled labor shortages), and safety requirements that are accelerating interest in robotic systems for inspection and maintenance. We conducted semi-structured interviews with personnel from seven U.S. nuclear utilities and compared deployment models, operational use cases, and integration practices with those reported by participants in the oil, gas, and petrochemical sector. In nuclear plants, robotic use remains concentrated in inspection—particularly indoor unmanned aerial vehicles and submersible remotely operated vehicles—with limited application to physical maintenance tasks. Reported near-term value includes reduced radiological and industrial risk, reduced outage labor, and improved data for planning and condition assessment. Key barriers include integration and data-interoperability constraints, operator qualification requirements, cybersecurity review burden, and difficulty demonstrating reliability in plant-representative environments. Cross-sector benchmarking highlights organizational and deployment practices that may help nuclear plants scale from pilots to routine use. We propose a deployment-oriented roadmap emphasizing modular payload strategies, representative qualification pathways and testing environments, and improved data governance to support safe and economically justified expansion of robotics in operating nuclear power plants.

Board 160: Empowerment in STEM Day: Introducing High School Girls to Careers at National Laboratories (Work in Progress)

In the US, women are still vastly underrepresented in STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) careers, and various studies have shown that girls' interest in STEM careers wane as high school progresses. With this challenge in mind, Empowerment in STEM Day was organized by Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL), hosting 47 high school students from 6 public high schools in the area. This one-day event was designed and executed through a collaboration between the Women's Support and Empowerment Council (WSEC) and the K-12 STEM Education and Outreach Program at LBNL. The main goal of this program was to provide high school girls, who have little access to STEM career role-models in their immediate surroundings with insights into how a career in STEM looks like. Invitations to participate in the program were sent out to six local high schools in the Bay area asking educators to identify female students that were interested in STEM. Each high school participant was provided with an opportunity to experience a national laboratory environment, learn more about summer workshops and paid summer research internship opportunities at LBNL for high school students, and engage directly with LBNL's employees through job shadow, career mapping and speed networking sessions. In this paper, we will present an overview of the event organization, challenges faced during planning and execution of the event, discuss the lessons learned from the first Empowerment in STEM Day and suggest strategies for incorporating such events at other national laboratories and academic institutions as part of a vital effort into recruiting and retaining more high school girls in STEM-based careers. Additionally, since this was the first in-person event hosted by LBNL's K-12 Program after the pandemic, we will also share the strategies implemented at the event so as to engage both remote and on-site employees as volunteers.

What is needed for BISCO to work in a dipole insert for 20 tesla hybrid accelerator magnets

Developing HTS dipole inserts producing fields larger than 5 T within 15 T Nb3Sn outserts is necessary to generate 20 T or higher fields for future high energy colliders. Dipole inserts based on the cos-theta coil geometry with various stress management concepts and Bi2212 super-conducting strand and cable are being developed at Fermilab both within and beyond the U.S. national effort. On paper, the potential reach for the maximum magnetic field in existing or planned Nb3Sn outserts is close to 20 T, thanks to the progress realized in Bi2212 wires’ critical current density. To achieve the Bi2212 potential in accelerator magnets, however, a number of technological challenges still have to be faced. These for instance include the need to design billets that are adequate for Rutherford cabling; developing insulation processes and materials that prevent leaks, which reduce transport current and increase the risk of shorts; control and limit Bi2212 coils’ stresses and strains; reconsider the Split Melt Process (SMP) to lower costs and simplify the processing. This paper reviews Bi2212 conductor properties and coil technolo-gies, and proposes new ideas to face the challenges that Bi2212 still presents as an accelerator magnet conductor.

Understanding the Inner-Workings of Language Models Through Representation Dissimilarity

We use model stitching to understand the internal representations of language models. Similar to vision models, we find that "more is better," and representations learned with more data and larger width can improve the performance of weaker models via stitching. We likewise find that certain architecture choices, using GeLU vs SoLU activation functions, influence the quality of learned representations. Finally, model stitching (as opposed to other model diagnostic methods, like mode connectivity) can localize the different generalization strategies of text classifiers under domain shift to certain hidden layers.

Site 200 - Building 225 Construction Project: Steel Pipe Abandonment Work Plan (October 2020)

In December 2019, a capped, 4-inch diameter pipe located inside a square concrete collar was discovered on the north side of a driveway leading into a construction project located at the northeast corner of First Street and Avenue and petroleum like odors were reported to Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory's (LLNL) Environment, Safety and Health (ES&H) staff. The pipe was also found to contain liquid, which was sampled. Analysis of the liquid showed the presence of refined petroleum hydrocarbons - primarily benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene and total xylenes, and lead. Based on various historical documents and maps, the pipe is assumed to be associated with one, or more of four 25,000-gallon, single-wall, concrete-construction, underground storage tanks (USTs) installed by the U.S. Department of Navy in approximately 1943. The USTs were reported to have been closed - abandoned in place and filled with sand in 1950.

Enabling behavior through personal commitment statements: why do they work?

We define and test three main hypotheses each examining a mechanism by which personal commitment statements may influence behavior: future-self continuity, disappointment or regret aversion, and present-biased preferences coupled with sophistication. A set of additional analyses are conducted exploring a personal commitment statement’s role as an enabling device that either increases, or is correlated with, intent to implement the desired behavior. Hypotheses are tested using data from a field experiment regarding public transit ridership. Results indicate that the strongest candidate mechanism for the effectiveness of a commitment statement to induce behavior change is the presence of present-biased preferences coupled with sophistication, or self-awareness of one’s own limitations in following through with effortful behaviors. In addition, results suggest that the preference for one commitment mechanism could indicate a general preference for commitment mechanisms, but the presence of one commitment mechanism may crowd out perceived need for or interest in other enabling steps.

NNSA-IAEC Science and Technology Working Group Area V - Waste Management and Subsurface Science, (Q1 FY2021)

The objective of Topic Area V is to evaluate the feasibility and safety of an intermediate-depth borehole for disposal of IAEC nuclear waste. The IAEC nuclear waste is currently stored in above ground and/or in near-surface facilities that provide short-term radiological worker safety but do not provide long-term, full security and safeguards protection for the nuclear material. Disposal of the IAEC nuclear waste several hundred meters below the surface in a sealed borehole would provide long-term security and safeguards due to its depth underground, as well as long-term radiological safety, due to its isolation in a stable geological formation.
