Short term hearing loss in general aviation operations, phase 1, part 1

The effects of light aircraft noise on six subjects during flight operations were investigated. The noise environment in the Piper Apache light aircraft was found to be capable of producing hearing threshold shifts. The following are the principal findings and conclusions: (1) Through most of the frequency range for which measurements were taken (500 to 6000 Hz), there was a regular progression showing increased loss of auditory acuity as a function of increased exposure time. (2) Extensive variability was found in the results among subjects, and in the measured loss at discrete frequencies for each subject. (3) The principal loss of hearing occurred at the low frequencies, around 500 Hz.

Personal hygienic concerns in long term space flight

Data from numerous experiments and hardware inventories were scanned for Skylab personal hygiene use. A computer program was formulated for predicting the degree of man's involvement with personal hygiene needs. A tabulation was kept for such events as water intake, frequency of urination and defecation, accidents or events requiring clean-up, methods of clean-up, microbiological environment and shower water contamination.

Irradiation test of tungsten clad uranium carbide-zirconium carbide ((U,Zr)C) specimens for thermionic reactor application at conditions conductive to long-term performance

Uranium carbide fueled, thermionic emitter configurations were encapsulated and irradiated. One capsule contained a specimen clad with fluoride derived chemically vapor deposited (CVD) tungsten. The other capsule used a duplex clad specimen consisting of chloride derived on floride derived CVD tungsten. Both fuel pins were 16 millimeters in diameter and contained a 45.7-millimeter length of fuel.

Long term tests of a SNAP-19 thermoelectric generator.

Results of tests performed on a SNAP 19 thermoelectric generator, SN-20. The SN-20 generator was tested for approximately 37,000 hours using electrical heating to simulate the heat released by isotope decay. After 27,000 hours of operation the output power from the generator decreased to approximately 1/3 of the beginning of life value while the internal resistance increased by a factor of 5. Analysis of the test results, confirmed by preliminary metallographic examination, indicated that the output power degradation was the result of excessive sublimation of the thermoelectric material and loss of the hot junction bond due to the depletion of the internal cover gas. This also resulted in excessive junction temperatures. Comparison is made with the behavior observed from the two flight generators and a tentative conclusion is advanced as to the reason for their failure.

Minor planets and related objects. XIII - Long-term orbital evolution of /1685/ Toro.

The orbital evolution of (1685) Toro has been investigated over 5000 yr. The asteroid exhibits a locked resonance through an 8:5 commensurability with the earth for the first 3400 yr of integration and a locked resonance with Venus through a 13:5 commensurability for the last 1000 yr. Control of these resonances passes from the earth to Venus as the distance from the earth's orbit gets greater and the distance to Venus' orbit gets closer as a consequence of the precession of the argument of perihelion. The double resonance may give Toro the ability to avoid collisions with the earth and Venus at the present time but this is still uncertain. Mars perturbations could remove Toro from the deepest part of the resonance in about 3,000,000 yrs.

Long-term X-ray observations of Scorpius X-1 by OSO-III.

Review of the observations of Scorpius X-1 in the energy range 7.7-22 keV provided by the X-ray telescope on the OSO-III satellite over the period from May 19 to June 13, 1967. Optical observations representative of the full range of temporal behavior of the source are available on 10 nights during this period. Sco X-1, in spite of being the most extensively observed X-ray source, remains one of the least understood. Coordinated observations in various wavelength bands, although inconclusive so far, represent potentially the most fruitful approach.

Explosives and pyrotechnic propellants for use in long term deep space missions

Explosives and pyrotechnic propellant materials which will withstand heat sterilization cycling at 125 C and ten year deep space aging under 10 to the minus 6th power torr and 66 C have been selected. The selection was accomplished through a detailed literature survey and an analytical evaluation of the physicochemical properties of the materials. The chemical components of the electroexplosive devices used in U.S. missiles and spacecraft were categorized into primary explosives, secondary explosives, and propellant ingredients. Kinetic data on such parameters as thermal decomposition and sublimation were obtained for these materials and used as a basis for the ten year life prediction. From these experimental data and some analytical calculations, a listing of candidate materials for deep space missions was made.

Power law time dependence of river flood decay and its relationship to long term discharge frequency distribution

Investigations have continued into the possibility that significant information on stream flow rates can be obtained from aerial and satellite imagery of river meander patterns by seeking a correlation between the meander and discharge spectra of rivers. Such a correlation could provide the basis for a simple and inexpensive technique for remote sensing of the water resources of large geographical areas, eliminating the need for much hydrologic recording. The investigation of the nature of the meander and discharge spectra and their interrelationship can also contribute to a more fundamental understanding of the processes of both river meander formation and drainage of large basins. It has been found that floods decay with an inverse power law dependence on time. The exponent of this dependence varies from river to river and even from station to station along the same river. This power law time dependence makes possible the forecasting of river discharge with an uncertainty of about 5% for as long as a month following the flood peak.

Apparent relationship between solar-sector boundaries and 300-mb vorticity: Possible explanation in terms of upward propagation of planetary-scale waves

The selection process for sector structure boundary crossings used in vorticity correlation studies is examined and the possible influence of ascending planetary scale waves is assessed. It is proposed that some of the observed correlations between geomagnetic and meteorological variations may be due to meteorological effects on the geometric variables, rather than due to common solar origin.

Numerical experiments on short-term meteorological effects of solar variability

Set of numerical experiments has been carried out to test the short range sensitivity of a large atmospheric general circulation model to changes in solar constant and ozone amount. On the basis of the results of 12-day integrations with very large variations in these parameters, it is concluded that realistic variations would produce insignificant meteorological effects. Thus any causal relationships between solar variability and weather, for time scales of two weeks or less, will have to rely upon changes in parameters other than solar constant or ozone amounts, or upon mechanisms not yet incorporated in the model.
