Production of 1,3-Butadiene from Renewable Feedstocks Ethanol and 1,3-Butanediol - CRADA 560 (Final Report)

1,3-butadiene is a commodity chemical currently produced from petroleum sources. Producing 1,3-butadiene from renewable resources will contribute to decarbonization, provide new green jobs, and reduce our dependance on oil. Development of multifunctional catalysts that are active, selective, and stable for this reaction has been an area of research and development. This effort reported here builds on our prior work for the 1-step conversion of ethanol to butadiene. The goal of the additional scope performed here was to accelerate the commercial deployment of sustainable butadiene production. We demonstrated that the PNNL Ag-based catalyst is significantly more active than the WWII-era catalyst when operated under the same conditions. A butadiene selectivity of 68% was obtained at 64% conversion for the production of butadiene from ethanol. It was found that ethanol feedstock is preferred over 1,3-butanediol feedstock to produce butadiene due to higher yield resulting in lower butadiene selling price (i.e., $\$$0.4-1.7/ lb). Production of 3.0 Liter of butadiene solution in hexane containing 100 grams of butadiene was achieved and delivered to Bridgestone for producing a butadiene-derived test piece.

MRCI Subtask 2.1: Defining Sub-Regional Carbon Storage Systems Final Technical Summary Report

In order to assess the regional and subregional geologic framework of the MRCI area and expand carbon dioxide (CO2) storage characterization efforts in this larger region, the current state of geologic knowledge relative to carbon storage (CS) has been summarized by compiling available geologic data and interpretive results into a centralized resource under Subtask 2.1. The MRCI region is a large area, which includes (1) part of the Forest City Basin and Western Arches, (2) Illinois Basin, (3) Upper Mississippi Embayment, (4) Michigan Basin, (5) Central Arches, (6) Appalachian Basin, and (7) Atlantic Coastal Plain and West Atlantic basins. Basins and arches are subdivided into areas of similar geology based on geologic structures and state-specific stratigraphic nomenclature. A concerted effort was made to present the current understanding of rock-unit stratigraphy in the subsurface of each basin and arch region (and subdivisions therein). Rock units are characterized based on their relative CS potential (saline reservoirs, confining intervals, etc.) within CS systems. CS systems are defined by regional confining units (usually thick, widespread shales), and contain all reservoirs and strata between the regional confining units. Search for a Non-Zero Value of the Electric Dipole Moment of the Neutron (Final Technical Report)

The research grant addressed in this final report began its most recent 3-year segment June 1, 2022 and terminated May 31, 2025. The work funded by the grant supported our group at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in its collaboration on the nEDM@SNS (SNS refers to the Spallation Neutron Source) project at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL). This project had as its goal the measurement of a non-zero value of the electric dipole moment of the neutron (nEDM). If indeed the neutron has a non-zero electric dipole moment, it will tell us very important information about the Standard Model of Nuclear and Particle Physics. The Standard Model is remarkably successful in describing much of the world we live in, but we know it is not complete. A non-zero nEDM would indicate the existence of strong CP violation, which would be a major addition to the Standard Model.

Closure Report for Corrective Action Unit 116: Area 25 Test Cell C Facility, Nevada National Security Site, Nevada with ROTC-1

CR loaded to this OSTI record. Just adding new file which includes CR plus new ROTC 1 and update the metadata to the following: This Closure Report (CR) presents information supporting closure of Corrective Action Unit (CAU) 116, Area 25 Test Cell C Facility. This CR complies with the requirements of the Federal Facility Agreement and Consent Order (FFACO) that was agreed to by the State of Nevada; the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), Environmental Management; the U.S. Department of Defense; and DOE, Legacy Management (FFACO, 1996 [as amended March 2010]). CAU 116 consists of the following two Corrective Action Sites (CASs), located in Area 25 of the Nevada National Security Site: (1) CAS 25-23-20, Nuclear Furnace Piping and (2) CAS 25-41-05, Test Cell C Facility. CAS 25-41-05 consisted of Building 3210 and the attached concrete shield wall. CAS 25-23-20 consisted of the nuclear furnace piping and tanks. Closure activities began in January 2007 and were completed in August 2011. Activities were conducted according to Revision 1 of the Streamlined Approach for Environmental Restoration Plan for CAU 116 (U.S. Department of Energy, National Nuclear Security Administration Nevada Site Office [NNSA/NSO], 2008). This CR provides documentation supporting the completed corrective actions and provides data confirming that closure objectives for CAU 116 were met. Site characterization data and process knowledge indicated that surface areas were radiologically contaminated above release limits and that regulated and/or hazardous wastes were present in the facility. The Record of Technical Change 1 updated the use restriction information.

FY20 Status Report on Photothermal Radiometry Development

This report documents FY20 progress in the development of a benchtop photothermal radiometry (PTR) instrument for the measurement of thermal diffusivity. A PTR system incorporating Off-Axis Parabolic (OAP) mirrors was designed and tested. Additionally, a novel analysis technique that accounts for systematic errors that affect measurement accuracy was implemented. Measurements on samples with a range of thermal diffusivities using the PTR setup along with the new analysis technique resulted in improved accuracy and repeatability. Areas for future development work are set forth.
