A Simplified Tool for Rapidly Deploying Feasibility Analytics for the Non-Technical User

District energy systems efficiently provide thermal energy to multiple buildings and facilities through a network of shared infrastructure. Frequently, district energy systems are centered around combined heat and power (CHP) plants that generate electricity, as well as heating and cooling, to the local buildings. By providing both electricity and thermal energy from a single fuel source and central location, these systems use less fuel, decrease energy and operational costs, and reduce the need for heating and cooling equipment in individual buildings.

Promoting a Rapid Deployment of New Services for Remote Reference at a National Laboratory

Libraries around the world use Springshare library products to expand their reference and information literacy services. The scholarly literature primarily addresses the use of Springshare’s LibGuides and LibChat in academic libraries. During the COVID-19 pandemic, virtual reference became the norm at all types of libraries, many turning to new tools to serve their patrons. This article describes the implementation and marketing of LibGuides and LibChat applications at the Los Alamos National Laboratory Research Library at the Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL). These Springshare tools helped the LANL Research Library close service gaps during the COVID-19 work from home initiative at LANL.

System and method for rapid, high throughput, high pressure synthesis of materials from a liquid precursor

The present disclosure relates to a system and method for synthesis of condensed nano-materials to at least one of create nanoparticles or modify existing nanoparticles. In one embodiment the system may have a source of liquid precursor, with the liquid precursor including a compound therein. A flow control element and a compression wave generating subsystem are also included. The flow control element is in communication with the source of the liquid precursor and creates a jet of liquid precursor. The compression wave generating subsystem drives a compression wave through at least a substantial portion of a thickness of the jet of liquid precursor to sufficiently compress the jet of liquid precursor, and to increase pressure and temperature of the jet of liquid precursor, to at least one of create nanoparticles or modify existing nanoparticles.

Integrated solid-state rapid thermo-cycling system

Techniques, systems, and devices are disclosed for implementing a portable lab system for PCR testing. The portable lab system comprises a thermal cycling device including a first well and a second well to receive samples to be thermally cycled, a thermoelectric cooling (TEC) element coupled to the first well and the second well, and a controller to control operation of the TEC element. The portable lab system further includes an electronic interface including a power interface to supply power to the TEC element and the controller of the thermal cycling device to allow the TEC element to transfer energy from the first well to the second well when current flows through the TEC element in a first direction, and from the second well to the first well when current flows through the TEC element in a second direction, and a data interface to collect data from the controller.

Rapid pyrolysis to form super ionic conducting lithium garnets

A method of preparing a lithium-ion conducting garnet via low-temperature solid-state synthesis is disclosed. The lithium-ion conducting garnet comprises a substantially phase pure aluminum-doped cubic lithium lanthanum zirconate (Li 7 La 3 Zr 2 O 14 ). The method includes preparing nanoparticles comprising lanthanum zirconate (La 2 Zr 2 O 7 -np) via pyrolysis-mediated reaction of lanthanum nitrate (La(NO 3 ) 3 ) and zirconium nitrate (Zr(NO 3 ) 4 ). The method also includes pyrolyzing a solid-state mixture comprising the La 2 Zr 2 O 7 -np, lithium nitrate (LiNO 3 ), and aluminum nitrate (Al(NO 3 ) 3 ) to give the Li 7 La 3 Zr 2 O 14 and thereby prepare the lithium-ion conducting garnet. A lithium-ion conducting garnet prepared via the method is also disclosed.

Rapid native single cell mass spectrometry

A method for analyzing single cells by mass spectrometry includes the steps of providing a plurality of cells in a liquid medium and placing the cells and liquid medium in a single cell isolation and ejection system. Liquid medium containing a single cell is released from the single cell isolation and ejection system. The liquid medium and single cell are captured in a capture probe containing a flowing capture probe solvent. The cell is lysed by a lysis inducer in the capture probe to disperse single cell components into the medium. The lysed single cell components are transported to a mass spectrometer, where the lysed single cell components entering the mass spectrometer are spatially and temporally separated from any dispersed components of another single cell from the sample entering the mass spectrometer. Mass spectrometry is conducted on the lysed single-cell components. A system for analyzing single cells by mass spectrometry is also disclosed.

Method for rapid development of additive manufacturing parameter set

An apparatus includes a control system that defines a test part having multiple features of multiple feature types. The control system controls an additive manufacturing (AM) machine to print multiple copies of the test part, with each copy being printed according to a respective set of values used as printing parameters. A measurement system obtains a computed tomography (CT) image of each of the copies of the test part. An analysis system, for each of the plurality of feature types, analyzes the CT images to identify a selected set of values for the printing parameters. The analysis system identifies a portion of the CT image related to a first feature and assesses its density based on an average grayscale value. The AM machine is then controlled to print production parts according to, for each feature type of the production parts, the selected set of values for the printing parameters.

Rapid droplet introduction interface (RDII) for mass spectrometry

A system for the mass spectrometry analysis of an analyte includes a droplet ejection device, a spray head comprising a spray tip for ejecting the solvent as a spray, and a solvent delivery conduit for delivering solvent to the spray tip. The spray head includes a droplet inlet opening communicating with the surrounding atmosphere for receiving liquid droplets comprising the analyte. The droplet ejection device selectively ejects a liquid analyte droplet comprising the analyte through a surrounding atmosphere and the droplet inlet opening into a solvent flowing through the solvent delivery conduit. A method for the mass spectrometry analysis of an analyte is also disclosed.
