New theory of transport due to like-particle collisions

Cross-magnetic-field transport due to like-particle collisions is discussed for the parameter regime lambda sub D much greater than r sub L, where lambda sub D is the Debye length and r sub L is the characteristic Larmor radius of the colliding particles. A new theory based on collisionally produced E x B drifts predicts a particle flux which exceeds the flux predicted previously, by the factor (lambda sub D/r sub L)-squared much greater than 1.

Particle acceleration in Saturn's outer magnetosphere - In memoriam Alois Schardt

Fluctuations in field strength and particle flux observed during the outbound pass of Voyager 2 through the Saturnian magnetosphere are discussed. The observations of injections of energetic electrons and ions, associated plasma wave activity, and magnetic field perturbations are described. These data imply the existence of an acceleration or heating site some distance from the Voyager 2. A correlation between impulsive injections of 0.35-2 MeV electrons, increase in the hot ion flux of 28-215 KeV, a dip in magnetic field magnitude, and a signal from the plasma wave instrument in the 562 Hz channel was detected. An explanation of these observations is provided.

One-dimensional numerical study of charged particle trajectories in turbulent electrostatic wave fields

The paper describes a numerical simulation of electron trajectories in weak random electric fields under conditions that are approximately true for Langmuir waves whose wavelength is much longer than the Debye length. Two types of trajectory calculations were made: (1) the initial particle velocity was made equal to the mean phase velocity of the waves, or (2) it was equal to 0.7419 times the mean velocity of the waves, so that the initial velocity differed substantially from all phase velocities of the wave spectrum. When the autocorrelation time is much greater than the trapping time, the particle motion can change virtually instantaneously from one of three states - high-velocity, low-velocity, or trapped state - to another. The probability of instantaneous transition from a high- or low-velocity state becomes small when the difference between the particle velocity and the mean phase velocity of the waves becomes high in comparison to the trapping velocity. Diffusive motion becomes negligible under these conditions also.

Adiabatic particle motion in a nearly drift-free magnetic field: Application to the geomagnetic tail

The guiding center motion of particles in a nearly drift free magnetic field is analyzed in order to investigate the dependence of mean drift velocity on equatorial pitch angle, the variation of local drift velocity along the trajectory, and other properties. The mean drift for adiabatic particles is expressed by means of elliptic integrals. Approximations to the twice-averaged Hamiltonian W near z = O are derived, permitting simple representation of drift paths if an electric potential also exists. In addition, the use of W or of expressions for the longitudinal invariant allows the derivation of the twice averaged Liouville equation and of the corresponding Vlasov equation. Bounce times are calculated (using the drift-free approximation), as are instantaneous guiding center drift velocities, which are then used to provide a numerical check on the formulas for the mean drift.

Three relativistic neutrons in a finite volume

We generalize the relativistic field-theoretic (RFT) three-particle finite-volume formalism to systems of three identical, massive, spin-1/2 fermions, such as three neutrons. This allows, in principle, for the determination of the three-neutron interaction from the finite-volume spectrum of three-neutron states, which can be obtained from lattice QCD calculations.

Cryogenic User Facilities for R&D on Noble Liquid Detectors and Low Temperature Devices

Cryogenic test facilities are critical infrastructure for physics experiments in a variety of fields, perhaps most notably for particle detection with noble liquid detectors, low-temperature device development, and quantum information research. However, considerable investment and technical knowledge are required to construct and operate such facilities. This white paper discusses proposals for user facilities aimed at broadening the availability of testing capabilities for the scientific community.

Space charge effects for collective instabilities in circular machines

Abstract Coulomb fields of charged particle beams in circular machines determine, together with wake fields, modes of the collective beam oscillations, for both transverse and longitudinal degrees of freedom. Recent progress in these two areas of beam dynamics is discussed.

Variable Ion Compositions of Solar Energetic Particle Events in the Inner Heliosphere: A Field Line Braiding Model with Compound Injections

We propose a model for interpreting highly variable ion composition ratios in solar energetic particle (SEP) events recently observed by the Parker Solar Probe (PSP) at 0.3–0.45 au. We use numerical simulations to calculate SEP propagation in a turbulent interplanetary magnetic field with a Kolmogorov power spectrum from large scales down to the gyration scale of energetic particles. We show that when the source regions of different species are offset by a distance comparable to the size of the source regions, the observed energetic particle composition He/H can be strongly variable over more than two orders of magnitude, even if the source ratio is at the nominal value. Assuming a 3 He/ 4 He source ratio of 10% in impulsive 3 He-rich events and the same spatial offset of the source regions, the 3 He/ 4 He ratio at observation sites also vary considerably. The variability of the ion composition ratios depends on the radial distance, which can be tested by observations made at different radial locations. We discuss the implications of these results on the variability of ion composition of impulsive events and on further PSP and Solar Orbiter observations close to the Sun.

Ponderomotive Force in the Presence of Electric Fields

This paper presents averaged equations of particle motion in an electromagnetic wave of arbitrary frequency with its wave vector directed along the ambient magnetic field. The particle is also subjected to an E cross B drift and a background electric field slowly changing in space and acting along the magnetic field line. The fields, wave amplitude, and the wave vector depend on the coordinate along the magnetic field line. The derivations of the ponderomotive forces are done by assuming that the drift velocity in the ambient magnetic field is comparable to the particle velocity. Such a scenario leads to new ponderomotive forces, dependent on the wave magnetic field intensity, and, as a result, to the additional energy exchange between the wave and the plasma particles. It is found that the parallel electric field can lead to the change of the particle-wave energy exchange rate comparable to that produced by the previously discussed ponderomotive forces.

An implicit, conservative and asymptotic-preserving electrostatic particle-in-cell algorithm for arbitrarily magnetized plasmas in uniform magnetic fields

Here, we introduce a new electrostatic particle-in-cell algorithm capable of using large timesteps compared to particle gyro-period under a uniform external magnetic field. The algorithm extends earlier electrostatic fully implicit PIC implementations with a new asymptotic-preserving particle-push scheme that allows timesteps much larger than particle gyroperiods. In the large-timestep limit, the integrator preserves all particle drifts, while recovering the full orbit for small timesteps. The scheme allows for a seamless, efficient treatment of particles with coexisting magnetized and unmagnetized species, and conserves energy and charge exactly without spoiling implicit solver performance. We demonstrate by numerical experiment with several problems of variable species magnetization (diocotron instability, modified two-stream instability, and drift instability) that orders of magnitude wall-clock-time speedups vs. the standard fully implicit electrostatic PIC algorithm are possible without sacrificing solution accuracy.

Generalized parametric down conversion, many particle interferometry, and Bell's theorem

A new field of multi-particle interferometry is introduced using a nonlinear optical spontaneous parametric down conversion (SPDC) of a photon into more than two photons. The study of SPDC using a realistic Hamiltonian in a multi-mode shows that at least a low conversion rate limit is possible. The down converted field exhibits many stronger nonclassical phenomena than the usual two photon parametric down conversion. Application of the multi-particle interferometry to a recently proposed many particle Bell's theorem on the Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen problem is given.

Search for Heavy Neutral Leptons in Decays of $W$ Bosons Using a Dilepton Displaced Vertex in $\sqrt3$ = TeV $pp$ Collisions with the ATLAS Detector

A search for a long-lived, heavy neutral lepton ($\mathscr{N}$) in 139 fb -1 of $\sqrt3$ = TeV $pp$ collision data collected by the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider is reported. The $\mathscr{N}$ is produced via W → $\mathscr{N}$ μ or W → $\mathscr{N}$e and decays into two charged leptons and a neutrino, forming a displaced vertex. The $\mathscr{N}$ mass is used to discriminate between signal and background. No signal is observed, and limits are set on the squared mixing parameters of the $\mathscr{N}$ with the left-handed neutrino states for the $\mathscr{N}$ mass range 3 GeV < $m$ $\mathscr{N}$ < 15 GeV. For the first time, limits are given for both single-flavor and multiflavor mixing scenarios motivated by neutrino flavor oscillation results for both the normal and inverted neutrino-mass hierarchies.
