Monolithic lead salt-silicon focal plane development

This paper is a summary of work done in the development of monolithic lead salt-silicon infrared focal plane technology. The photoconductive detector materials, PbS and PbSe are chemically deposited onto premetallized silicon MOSFET integrated circuit wafers. A variety of structures based on an implanted PMOS process were fabricated and evaluated. Operational results of an eight-element PbS array multiplexed on-chip are presented along with radiometric measurements on other integrated PbS-silicon MOSFET structures. PbS imagery is shown using one element of a 20-element array integrated on-chip.

Fiber optic temperature sensor

A temperature sensor has been developed that utilizes the temperature dependent absorption of a rare earth doped optical fiber. The temperature measurement is localized at a remote position by splicing a short section of the rare earth fiber into a loop of commercial data communication fiber that sends and returns an optical probe signal to the temperature sensitive section of fiber. The optical probe signal is generated from two different wavelength filtered LED sources. A four port fiber optic coupler combines the two separate wavelength signals into the fiber sensing loop. Time multiplexing is used so that each signal wavelength is present at a different time. A reference signal level measurement is also made from the LED sources and a ratio taken with the sensor signal to produce a transmission measurement of the fiber loop. The transmission is affected differently at each wavelength by the rare earth temperature sensitive fiber. The temperature is determined from a ratio of the two transmission measurements. This method eliminates any ambiguity with respect to changes in signal level in the fiber loop such as mating and unmating optical connectors. The temperature range of the sensor is limited to about 800 C by the temperature limit fo the feed fibers.

Automatic oscillator frequency control system

A frequency control system makes an initial correction of the frequency of its own timing circuit after comparison against a frequency of known accuracy and then sequentially checks and corrects the frequencies of several voltage controlled local oscillator circuits. The timing circuit initiates the machine cycles of a central processing unit which applies a frequency index to an input register in a modulo-sum frequency divider stage and enables a multiplexer to clock an accumulator register in the divider stage with a cyclical signal derived from the oscillator circuit being checked. Upon expiration of the interval, the processing unit compares the remainder held as the contents of the accumulator against a stored zero error constant and applies an appropriate correction word to a correction stage to shift the frequency of the oscillator being checked. A signal from the accumulator register may be used to drive a phase plane ROM and, with periodic shifts in the applied frequency index, to provide frequency shift keying of the resultant output signal. Interposition of a phase adder between the accumulator register and phase plane ROM permits phase shift keying of the output signal by periodic variation in the value of a phase index applied to one input of the phase adder.

Performance of direct and iterative algorithms on an optical systolic processor

The frequency-multiplexed optical linear algebra processor (OLAP) is treated in detail with attention to its performance in the solution of systems of linear algebraic equations (LAEs). General guidelines suitable for most OLAPs, including digital-optical processors, are advanced concerning system and component error source models, guidelines for appropriate use of direct and iterative algorithms, the dominant error sources, and the effect of multiple simultaneous error sources. Specific results are advanced on the quantitative performance of both direct and iterative algorithms in the solution of systems of LAEs and in the solution of nonlinear matrix equations. Acoustic attenuation is found to dominate iterative algorithms and detector noise to dominate direct algorithms. The effect of multiple spatial errors is found to be additive. A theoretical expression for the amount of acoustic attenuation allowed is advanced and verified. Simulations and experimental data are included.

A synchronous fiber optic ring local area network for multigigabit/s mixed-traffic communication

A synchronous-ring fiber optic local area network is reported that facilitates the simultaneous transmission of packet and real-time traffic at gigabit/s rates, minimizes the amount of high-speed logic, and simplifies the user interface to the network. The novelty of the technique is based on (1) suspending in transit around the ring's circumference an integral number of data frames and (2) achieving this condition by skewing the frame clock rate a small amount. Rather than use the whole data frame as one packet destined to a specific user, many individual channels are instead time-multiplexed into the data frame. This technique only becomes feasible for local networks as data rates approach the Gbit/s range. This departure from other synchronous rings results in several advantages both in terms of system performance and hardware simplicity.

MLA instruments and SWIR focal-plane technology

It is pointed out that next-generation sensors for earth observation will utilize Multispectral Linear Array (MLA) technology wherein linear detector arrays will scan the earth in pushbroom fashion. MLA instruments will permit a dramatic increase in detector dwell time, which can be utilized to improve spatial, spectral, and radiometric resolution. In connection with the considered applications for MLA sensors, the employed detector arrays should cover the visible, near-infrared, and shortwave infrared (SWIR) spectral bands. The present paper is mainly concerned with the development of mercury-cadmium-telluride focal-plane arrays for the SWIR spectral regime (1-2.5 microns). Attention is given to the requirements, design details regarding the detector array, the employed multiplexer technique, the hybrid concept, packaging, and the program status.

Shortwave infrared 512 x 2 line sensor for earth resources applications

As part of the NASA remote-sensing Multispectral Linear Array Program, an edge-buttable 512 x 2 IRCCD line image sensor with 30-micron Pd2Si Schottky-barrier detectors is developed for operation with passive cooling at 120 K in the 1.1-2.5 micron short infrared band. On-chip CCD multiplexers provide one video output for each 512 detector band. The monolithic silicon line imager performance at a 4-ms optical integration time includes a signal-to-noise ratio of 241 for irradiance of 7.2 microwatts/sq cm at 1.65 microns wavelength, a 5000 dynamic range, a modulation transfer function, greater than 60 percent at the Nyquist frequency, and an 18-milliwatt imager chip total power dissipation. Blemish-free images with three percent nonuniformity under illumination and nonlinearity of 1.25 percent are obtained. A five SWIR imager hybrid focal plane was constructed, demonstrating the feasibility of arrays with only a two-detector loss at each joint.

US long distance fiber optic networks: Technology, evolution and advanced concepts. Volume 1: Executive summary

Over the past two decades, fiber optics has emerged as a highly practical and cost-efficient communications technology. Its competitiveness vis-a-vis other transmission media, especially satellite, has become a critical question. This report studies the likely evolution and application of fiber optic networks in the United States to the end of the century. The outlook for the technology of fiber systems is assessed and forecast, scenarios of the evolution of fiber optic network development are constructed, and costs to provide service are determined and examined parametrically as a function of network size and traffic carried. Volume 1 consists of the Executive Summary. Volume 2 focuses on fiber optic technology and long distance fiber optic networks. Volume 3 develops a traffic and financial model of a nationwide long distance transmission network. Among the study's most important conclusions are: revenue requirements per circuit for LATA-to-LATA fiber optic links are less than one cent per call minute; multiplex equipment, which is likely to be required in any competing system, is the largest contributor to circuit costs; the potential capacity of fiber optic cable is very large and as yet undefined; and fiber optic transmission combined with other network optimization schemes can lead to even lower costs than those identified in this study.
