A NASA family of minicomputer systems, Appendix A

This investigation was undertaken to establish sufficient specifications, or standards, for minicomputer hardware and software to provide NASA with realizable economics in quantity purchases, interchangeability of minicomputers, software, storage and peripherals, and a uniformly high quality. The standards will define minicomputer system component types, each specialized to its intended NASA application, in as many levels of capacity as required.

Earth resources data analysis system

The Earth Resources Laboratory Data Analysis System provides a valuable research tool in the evaluation of multispectral, radiometric, photographic, and passive microwave imagery data. The system has been in operational use for several months and has performed quite well. Emphasis on versatility of both the hardware and software design facilitates system expansion to many specialized data analysis tasks. The many independent software handlers provide building blocks for major processing programs.

Studies to design and develop improved remote manipulator systems

Remote manipulator control considered is based on several levels of automatic supervision which derives manipulator commands from an analysis of sensor states and task requirements. Principle sensors are manipulator joint position, tactile, and currents. The tactile sensor states can be displayed visually in perspective or replicated in the operator's control handle of perceived by the automatic supervisor. Studies are reported on control organization, operator performance and system performance measures. Unusual hardware and software details are described.

Systems performance monitoring for advanced manned spacecraft

Optimum system mechanizations for advanced manned spacecraft are considered. Several studies have proposed automation of the onboard system management task, with functions such as system status monitoring, configuration management, and redundancy management being accomplished under computer control. An experimental system was used in the laboratory to investigate hardware and software requirements for accomplishing these onboard system management functions. A performance monitor system is proposed for the space shuttle. This system provides support to the flight crew in the management of all onboard systems but does not perform critical switching functions during the flight phase.

Digital interactive image analysis by array processing

An attempt is made to draw a parallel between the existing geophysical data processing service industries and the emerging earth resources data support requirements. The relationship of seismic data analysis to ERTS data analysis is natural because in either case data is digitally recorded in the same format, resulting from remotely sensed energy which has been reflected, attenuated, shifted and degraded on its path from the source to the receiver. In the seismic case the energy is acoustic, ranging in frequencies from 10 to 75 cps, for which the lithosphere appears semi-transparent. In earth survey remote sensing through the atmosphere, visible and infrared frequency bands are being used. Yet the hardware and software required to process the magnetically recorded data from the two realms of inquiry are identical and similar, respectively. The resulting data products are similar.

A general model for the study of fault tolerance and diagnosis.

The concept of a 'system with faults' is introduced as a suggested point of departure for the theoretical study of fault tolerance and diagnosis in systems. The model is defined relative to a general representation scheme for systems and, depending on the choice of representation, can be used to investigate either hardware or software faults that occur during either the design or use of a system.

Systems engineering at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory.

Work at the JPL in systems engineering is surveyed with the emphasis on practical experience with large hardware and software systems. Systems concepts in lunar and planetary projects, in the Morgantown project, and in the Urban Health Systems Task are discussed. Goal definition, problem statement, objective and criteria development, and synthesis, analysis, selection and implementation of systems are considered as successive steps in the optimization of the overall system.-
