Hobel stripper for shielded and unshielded flat conductor cable

Stripping tool exposes an area of shield for grounding purposes without removing an area of insulation between terminated shield and exposed conductors. Tool does not require heated blade and is capable of removing small portions of material at a time, to any depth.

Flat conductor cable handbook

Handbook includes discussion of FCC advantages, status of FCC regarding military specifications, hardware availability, and existing applications, descriptions and data on available cable, connectors, fasteners and hardware, design techniques and applications, wiring, manufacturing and installation techniques - and inspection and test procedures.

Analysis and design of a flat central finned-tube radiator

Computer program based on fixed conductance parameter yields minimum weight design. Second program employs variable conductance parameter and variable ratio of fin length to tube outside radius, and is used for radiator designs with geometric limitations. Major outputs of the two programs are given.

Folding tools for flat conductor cable harnesses

Vise grip pliers have detachable metal gripping plates which are changed to accommodate cables from 1 to 3 in. wide and to form any desired fold angle. A second tool squeezes cable along crease to complete the fold.

Improvements of Zeyded method for calculating flutter of flat panels

Method for calculating flutter boundaries and estimating stresses in infinite spanwise array of panels is presented. Numerical analyses are included for pinned edge panels, isotropic panel material, zero viscous damping, and no elastic foundation. Design flutter boundaries are presented for aluminum panels on Saturn spacecraft trajectory.

Flat-band assembly for toroidal transformer cores

Toroidal transformer cores are often banded together by means of strap. Spot welds secure strap. Proper tension is obtained by use of special fixture in conjunction with winding of wire which is placed temporarily on core; winding is excited by dc current to hold core halves together magnetically during alignment.

Development of termination and utilization concepts for flat conductor cables. Volume 2: Utilization of small gage wire round conductor cables

The practical use of small-gage round wire for electrical wiring in manned air and space vehicle environments is discussed. The investigation consisted on a study of wire construction and candidate wire harness concepts, fabrication of small-gage wire harnesses, and verification of promising configurations by laboratory evaluation. The wire constructions selected for harness fabrication are described. Results of the laboratory evaluation are included.

Design and development of LH2 cooled rolling element radial bearings for the NERVA engine turbopump. Volume 3: Phase 2: Tests on build-ups 16, 17, and 18 at NRDS, Jackass Flats, Nevada, December 1971 - March 1972

The use of liquid hydrogen to cool the rolling element radial bearings in the nuclear engine for rocket vehicles is discussed. The fifteen hour service life goal was obtained during the tests. The increase in bearing life was also considered to be produced by: (1) improvements in bearing material, (2) bearing retainer configuration and manufacturing changes, and (3) better control of operating parameters.

A study of the effect of a boundary layer profile on the dynamic response and acoustic radiation of flat panels

The response of a thin, elastic plate to a harmonic force which drives the plate from below and a compressible air stream with a viscous boundary layer flowing parallel to the upper surface along the length was investigated. Equations governing the forced response of the coupled plate-aerodynamic system are derived along with appropriate boundary conditions. Calculations of basic solution parameters for a linear velocity profile and for a Blasius profile showed that the same system response could be obtained from each profile if appropriate values of boundary layer thickness were chosen for each profile.

Wind tunnel investigation of a large-scale semispan model with an unswept wing and an upper-surface blown jet flat

An investigation of the static longitudinal aerodynamic characteristics of a large-scale semispan model with an unswept wing and an upper-surface blown jet flap for lift augmentation was conducted in the Langley full-scale tunnel. The wing had an aspect ratio of 7.8 (3.9 for the semispan) and a simulated turbofan engine mounted ahead of and above the wing in a nacelle with a rectangular-exit nozzle. The flap system had three spanwise flap segments: (1) an inboard plain flap located behind the engine and having a large radius of curvature to provide a smooth upper surface to enhance the turning of the jet sheet, (2) a double-slotted midspan flap, and (3) a drooped aileron equipped with blowing boundary-layer control. The wing was also equipped with a full-span leading-edge Krueger flap with blowing boundary-layer control. In addition to the aerodynamic measurements, noise measurements were also included in the investigation for positions above and below the wing.

Flat plate collector performance determined experimentally with a solar simulator

The NASA is constructing a new office building at Langley Research Center that will utilize solar energy for heating and cooling. A collector technology program being conducted at Lewis will provide the basis for selecting collectors for use at Langley. The technology program includes testing collectors in an indoor facility under simulated solar radiation. Tests have been conducted on five collectors to date and performance data are presented herein.

In situ detection of microbial respiration in soils and salt flats

Increase in CO2 partial pressures over a desert soil treated with casamino-acids glucose solution correlated with bacterial growth. Few or no increases in numbers of bacteria or CO2 concentrations were noted in similar plots treated with water only or receiving no treatment. Growth in the soil appeared to be severely nutrient limited during the 10 day experiment. Especially rapid growth took place between the third and fifth day, when temperatures ranged from 0 deg. (night) to a maximum of 17.4 deg. (day). Under the conditions of the experiment, intermittent CO2 assay was an insensitive indicator of growth, possibly because of restiction of gas escape by the desert pavement or solution, exchange, or precipitation of carbonate, but more likely because of inefficient sealing of hoods to and below the soil surface. CO2 assay was unable to detect microbial successions. The unpredictable course of these successions, plus unpredictable relative retentions mitigates against assay of organic gases as reliable in situ detection of microbial activity, except perhaps in very alkaline environments such as Owens Lake salts.
