Differential sampling for fast frequency acquisition via adaptive extended least squares algorithm

This paper presents a differential signal model along with appropriate sampling techinques for least squares estimation of the frequency and frequency derivatives and possibly the phase and amplitude of a sinusoid received in the presence of noise. The proposed algorithm is recursive in mesurements and thus the computational requirement increases only linearly with the number of measurements. The dimension of the state vector in the proposed algorithm does not depend upon the number of measurements and is quite small, typically around four. This is an advantage when compared to previous algorithms wherein the dimension of the state vector increases monotonically with the product of the frequency uncertainty and the observation period. Such a computational simplification may possibly result in some loss of optimality. However, by applying the sampling techniques of the paper such a possible loss in optimality can made small.

Observations of energetic ion enhancements and fast neutrals upstream and downstream of Uranus' bow shock by the Voyager 2 spacecraft

Measurements of energetic ions and electrons upstream and downstream from Uranus obtained during the low energy charged particle experiment on Voyager 2 are discussed. The results indicate that energetic ions were present upstream of Uranus' bow shock and that their charcteristics, in terms of anisotropies and energy spectra, are consistent with an Uranian magnetospheric origin and are inconsistent with predictions of in situ acceleration via the Fermi mechanism. An upper limit to the flux of energetic neutrals escaping the magnetosphere is established, and the volume-averaged neutral hydrogen density inside 5 Uranian radii is constrained.

Optical correlators with fast updating speed using photorefractive semiconductor materials

The performance of an updatable optical correlator which uses a photorefractive semiconductor to generate real-time matched filters is discussed. The application of compound semiconductors makes possible high-speed operation and low optical input intensities. The Bragg diffraction is considered, along with the speed and power characteristics of these materials. Experimental results on photorefractive GaAs are presented.

Fast computation of the multivariable stability margin for real interrelated uncertain parameters

A novel algorithm for computing the multivariable stability margin for checking the robust stability of feedback systems with real parametric uncertainty is proposed. This method eliminates the need for the frequency search involved in another given algorithm by reducing it to checking a finite number of conditions. These conditions have a special structure, which allows a significant improvement on the speed of computations.

Fast Asynchronous Data Communication Via Fiber Optics

Transmitter and receiver devised for asynchronous digital communication via optical fiber at rates above 100 Mb/s. Transmitter converts parallel data to serial for high-speed transmission; receiver recovers clock signal and converts data back to parallel. No phase-lock loops used. New receiver design avoids over-sampling altogether. Local sampling oscillator operating nominally at clock frequency generates N clock signals of equally spaced phase, used to clock incoming data into N separate shift registers.

Fast Correction For Doppler In MDPSK Signals

Detector of multiple differential phase-shift-keyed (MDPSK) signals designed to effect combination of open-loop estimation of frequency and differential detection of digital modulation. Improved design expected to decrease probability of bit errors in situations in which carrier frequency uncertain and signals transmitted in bursts too short to allow closed-loop tracking of carrier frequency - for example, in transmission of digitally-coded voice signals in land-mobile/satellite communications at ultra-high frequencies.

Fast Laser Holographic Interferometry For Wind Tunnels

Proposed system makes holographic interferograms quickly in wind tunnels. Holograms reveal two-dimensional flows around airfoils and provide information on distributions of pressure, structures of wake and boundary layers, and density contours of flow fields. Holograms form quickly in thermoplastic plates in wind tunnel. Plates rigid and left in place so neither vibrations nor photgraphic-development process degrades accuracy of holograms. System processes and analyzes images quickly. Semiautomatic micro-computer-based desktop image-processing unit now undergoing development moves easily to wind tunnel, and its speed and memory adequate for flows about airfoils.

Fast polar decomposition of an arbitrary matrix

The polar decomposition of an m x n matrix A of full rank, where m is greater than or equal to n, can be computed using a quadratically convergent algorithm. The algorithm is based on a Newton iteration involving a matrix inverse. With the use of a preliminary complete orthogonal decomposition the algorithm can be extended to arbitrary A. How to use the algorithm to compute the positive semi-definite square root of a Hermitian positive semi-definite matrix is described. A hybrid algorithm which adaptively switches from the matrix inversion based iteration to a matrix multiplication based iteration due to Kovarik, and to Bjorck and Bowie is formulated. The decision when to switch is made using a condition estimator. This matrix multiplication rich algorithm is shown to be more efficient on machines for which matrix multiplication can be executed 1.5 times faster than matrix inversion.

Integration of perception and reasoning in fast neural modules

Artificial neural systems promise to integrate symbolic and sub-symbolic processing to achieve real time control of physical systems. Two potential alternatives exist. In one, neural nets can be used to front-end expert systems. The expert systems, in turn, are developed with varying degrees of parallelism, including their implementation in neural nets. In the other, rule-based reasoning and sensor data can be integrated within a single hybrid neural system. The hybrid system reacts as a unit to provide decisions (problem solutions) based on the simultaneous evaluation of data and rules. Discussed here is a model hybrid system based on the fuzzy cognitive map (FCM). The operation of the model is illustrated with the control of a hypothetical satellite that intelligently alters its attitude in space in response to an intersecting micrometeorite shower.

Chaotic flows and fast magnetic dynamos

The kinematic dynamo problem is considered in the R(m) approaching infinity limit. It is shown that the magnetic field tends to concentrate on a zero volume fractal set; moreover, it displays arbitrarily fine-scaled oscillations between parallel and antiparallel directions. Consideration is given to the relationship between the dynamo growth rate and quantitative measures of chaos, such as the Liapunov element and topological entropy.

Fast and stable recursive algorithms for continuous-time and discrete-time model conversions

Based on the Newton-Raphson method, this paper presents recursive algorithms that are rapidly convergent and more stable for modeling the equivalent continuous-time (discrete-time) model from the available discrete-time (continuous-time) model for a fixed sampling period. The newly developed recursive algorithms relax the constraints imposed upon the existing model conversion algorithms, and, thus, enhance the applications of microprocessors and associated microelectronics to digital control systems. A practical example is presented to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed procedures.

A Fourier analysis for a fast simulation algorithm

This paper presents a derivation of compact expressions for the Fourier series analysis of the steady-state solution of a typical switching converter. The modeling procedure for the simulation and the steady-state solution is described, and some desirable traits for its matrix exponential subroutine are discussed. The Fourier analysis algorithm was tested on a phase-controlled parallel-loaded resonant converter, providing an experimental confirmation.

Fast frequency tuning and phase locking of diode-pumped Nd:YAG ring lasers

A diode-pumped single-mode monolithic Nd:YAG ring-laser oscillator has been built which can be tuned piezoelectrically over several tens of MHz in a few microsecs. Frequency stability over 1 msec is better than 500 Hz. Two lasers have been electronically phase locked for periods of minutes with a phase noise of 29 mrad rms.

Electron heating and the potential jump across fast mode shocks

Two different methods were applied to determine the cross-shock potential jump in the de Hoffmann-Teller reference frame, using a data set that represented 66 crossings of the terrestrial bow shock and 14 interplanetary shocks observed by various ISEE spacecraft, and one crossing each of the Jovian bow shock and the Uranian bow shock made by the Voyager spacecraft. Results for estimates of the electrostatic potential based on an estimate of the jump in electron enthalpy correlated well with estimates based on Liouville's theorem, although the Liouville-determined values were systematically the higher of the two, suggesting that significant irreversible processes contribute to the shape of the downstream distribution. The potential jump corresponds to approximately 12-15 percent of the incident ion ram kinetic energy, and was found not to be controlled by the Mach number, plasma beta, shock geometry, or electron to ion temperature ratios.

Molecule formation in fast neutral winds from protostars

A time-dependent chemical model is used to analyze the processes generating and destroying molecules in very high velocity winds from low-mass protostars. CO and SiO are found to be generated in significant quantities despite the persistence of H in atomic form, consistently with recent protostellar wind detections of CO and H I at velocities in excess of 100 km/sec. A moderate mass-loss rate, in conjunction with a temperature distribution that decreases rather rapidly with distance from the protostar, are the conditions for substantial molecule formation.

Interacting binary galaxies. VI - The fast encounter of NGC 2672 and NGC 2673 (Karachentsev 175, Arp 167)

The isolated pair of interacting ellipticals NGC 2672/2673 (Arp 167; Karachentsev 175), whose line-of-sight relative velocity is about 520 km/s, is studied. This very unequal mass system features two low surface brightness plumes emerging from the secondary galaxy NGC 2673. Photometric data on the pair are described, and the distortions in the galaxies and their photometric properties are discussed. Spectroscopic observations of the pair and the velocity structures derived from these are addressed. A physical solution for the pair is presented and explained.

Fast, long-lived features in the polar stratosphere

The analysis method of Salby (1982) is applied to Stratospheric Sounding Unit brightness temperatures from the TIROS-N and NOAA-6 satellites. The resulting spectra are used to present further evidence for the wave two and three oscillations found by Prata (1984) and to demonstrate the existence of a wave four feature. Maps of synoptic reconstructions of the brightness temperature fields from the spectra are then used to further characterize the warm pools.
