Effect of processing parameters on the characteristics of high-Tc superconductor YBa2Cu3Oy

SEM, thermogravimetric analysis, powder X-ray diffraction, and measurements of electrical resistivity and magnetic susceptibility, are presently used to characterize the influence of sintering temperature, sintering and annealing atmospheres, and quench-rate on the properties of the YBa2Cu3Oy superconducting oxide. It is established that annealing in oxygen, together with slow cooling rates, are required for preparation of high-Tc superconductors with sharp transitions; rapid quenching from high temperature does not yield good superconductors, due to low oxygen content.

Superconducting ceramics in the Bi1.5SrCaCu2O sub x system by melt quenching technique

Bi sub 1.5 SrCaCu sub 2 O sub x has been prepared in the glassy state by rapid quenching of the melt. The kinetics of crystallization of various phases in the glass have been evaluated by a variable heating rate differential scanning calorimetry method. The formation various phases on thermal treatments of the glass has been investigated by powder X-ray diffraction and electrical resistivity measurements. Heating at 450 C formed Bi sub 2 Sr sub 2 CuO sub 6, which disappeared on further heating at 765 C, where Bi sub 2 Sr sub 2 CaCu sub 2 O sub 8 formed. Prolonged heating at 845 C resulted in the formation of a small amount of a phase with T sub c onset of approx. 108 K, believed to be Bi sub 2 Sr sub 2 Ca sub 2 Cu sub 3 O sub 10. This specimen showed zero resistivity at 54 K. The glass ceramic approach could offer several advantages in the fabrication of the high-T sub c superconductors in desired practical shapes such as continuous fibers, wires, tapes, etc.

Preparation of 110K (Bi, Pb)-Sr-Ca-Cu-O superconductor from glass precursor

The Bi1.5Pb0.5Sr2Ca2Cu3O(x) glass, prepared by rapid quenching of the melt, showed T(sub g) of 383 C, crystallization temperature of approx. 446 C, melting temperature of approx. 855 C, and bulk density of 5.69 g/cu. cm. in air. The as-quenched glass was oxygen deficient. On heating in O2, it showed a slow, irreversible, and continuous weight gain starting at approx. 530 C. The influence of annealing conditions on the formation of various phases was investigated by XRD and electrical resistivity measurements. The 110K-T(sub c) phase did not form below 840 C. The amount of this phase increased with the sintering time at 840 C. A sample annealed at 840 C for 243 h in air and furnace cooled showed the highest T(sub c)(R=0) of 107.2K and transition width delta T(sub c)(10 to 90 percent) of approx. 2 K.

The assessment of metal fiber reinforced polymeric composites

Because of their low cost, excellent electrical conductivity, high specific strength (strength/density), and high specific modulus (modulus/density) short metal fiber reinforced composites have enjoyed a widespread use in many critical applications such as automotive industry, aircraft manufacturing, national defense, and space technology. However, little data has been found in the study of short metal fibrous composites. Optimum fiber concentration in a resin matrix and fiber aspect ratio (length-to-diameter ratio) are often not available to a user. Stress concentration at short fiber ends is the other concern when the composite is applied to a load-bearing application. Fracture in such composites where the damage will be initiated or accumulated is usually difficult to be determined. An experimental investigation is therefore carefully designed and undertaken to systematically evaluate the mechanical properties as well as electrical properties. Inconel 601 (nickel based) metal fiber with a diameter of eight microns is used to reinforce commercially available thermoset polyester resin. Mechanical testing such as tensile, impact, and flexure tests along with electrical conductivity measurements is conducted to study the feasibility of using such composites. The advantages and limitations of applying chopped metal fiber reinforced polymeric composites are also discussed.

Synthesis and characterization of high-Tc superconductors in the Tl-Ca-Ba-Cu-O system

Both Tl2Ca2Ba2Cu3O10 and TlCa3BaCu3O8.5 are investigated for superconductivity as a function of the sintering temperature, time, atmosphere, and quench rate in an effort to synthesize the high-Tc superconducting phase in the thallium system. The samples are characterized by electrical resistivity measurements, X-ray diffraction, and scanning electron microscopy. Samples of starting composition Tl2Ca2Ba2Cu3O10 fired in air at 860-900 C and rapidly quenched show a Tc of 96-107 K. In contrast, specimens of starting composition TlCa3BaCu3O8.5 when baked at 900 C and slowly cooled in oxygen superconduct at 116 K and above and consist of Tl2Ca2Ba2Cu3O(10+x) as the dominant phase. The results also show that, in contrast to the case of YBa2Cu3O(7-x), doping with a small concentration of fluorine sharpens the resistive transition and produces a large Tc increase in thallium-based superconductors.

Synthesis and characterization of high-T(c) screen-printed Y-Ba-Cu-O films on alumina

Thick films of YBa2Cu3O(sub 7-x) have been deposited on highly polished alumina substrates by the screen printing technique. To optimize the post-printing heat treatment, the films were baked at various temperatures for different lengths of time and oxygen-annealed at a lower temperature. The resulting films were characterized by electrical resistivity measurements, X-ray diffraction, and optical and scanning electron microscopy. Properties of the films were found to be highly sensitive to the post-printing thermal treatment. Films baked for 15 min at 1000 C in oxygen were hard, adherent, near single phase, and superconducting with T(sub c) (onset) approx 96 KK, T(sub c) (zero) approx 66 K and Delta T sub c (10 to 90 percent) approx 10 K.

Dual sounding rocket observations of low-altitude electrostatic shocks

Two sounding rockets were used to simultaneously place two payloads on nearly the same magnetic field lines in the late-evening auroral zone. The dc electric field measurements obtained by the payloads imply a parallel potential of several kV below the higher payload, probably occurring between the two payloads. No possible resistive mechanism in observed in the 100 Hz-10 kKz band which could support the parallel field; this implies the existence of resistance-generating turbulence which are either at other frequencies, or of a type not measured by the probes, or localized parallel potentials not coincident with the payload trajectories.

Aircraft measurements of electrified clouds at Kennedy Space Center, part 3

Flights made by the Special Purpose Test Vehicle for Atmospheric Research (SPTVAR) airplane during a second deployment to Florida during the summer of 1989 are discussed. The findings based on the data gathered are presented. The progress made during the second year of the project is discussed. The summer 1989 study was carried out with the support and guidance of Col. John Madura, Commander of Detachment 11, 2nd Weather Squadron, USAF, at Patrick Air Force Base (PAFB) and Cape Canaveral Air Force Station. The project goals were to develop and demonstrate techniques for measuring the electric field aloft and locating regions of charge during flight within and near clouds; to characterize the electric conditions that are presently identified as a threat to space launch vehicles; and to study the correlation between the electric field aloft and that at Kennedy Space Center's ground-based electric field mill array for a variety of electrified clouds.

Laser-induced fluorescence of phosphors for remote cryogenic thermometry

Remote cryogenic temperature measurements can be made by inducing fluorescence in phosphors with temperature-dependent emissions and measuring the emission lifetimes. The thermographic phosphor technique can be used for making precision, noncontact, cryogenic-temperature measurements in electrically hostile environments, such as high dc electric or magnetic fields. The National Aeronautics and Space Administration is interested in using these thermographic phosphors for mapping hot spots on cryogenic tank walls. Europium-doped lanthanum oxysulfide (La2O2S:Eu) and magnesium fluorogermanate doped with manganese (Mg4FGeO6:Mn) are suitable for low-temperature surface thermometry. Several emission lines, excited by a 337-nm ultraviolet laser, provide fluorescence lifetimes having logarithmic dependence with temperature from 4 to above 125 K. A calibration curve for both La2O2S:Eu and Mg4FGeO6:Mn is presented, as well as emission spectra taken at room temperature and 11 K.

Electrification in winter storms and the analysis of thunderstorm overflight

The emergence of 24 hr operational lightning detection networks has led to the finding that positive lightning strokes, although still much fewer in number than the normal negative strokes, are present in summer and winter storms. Recent papers address the importance of understanding the meteorological conditions which lead to a dominance of one polarity of stroke over another; the appearance of positive strokes at the end of a storm appeared to presage the end-of-storm downdraft and subsidence leading to downburst activity. It is beginning to appear that positive strokes may be important meteorological indicators. Significant research accomplishments on the following topics are addressed: (1) a study to verify that the black boxes used in the lightning networks to detect both negative and positive strokes to ground were accurate; (2) the use of slow tails to determine the polarity of distant lightning; (3) lightning initiation in winter vs. summer storms; (4) the upgrade of sensors for the measurement of electric field signals associated with lightning; (5) the analysis of lightning flash records from storms between 40 and 125 km from the sensor; and (6) an interesting aspect of the initiation process which involves the physical processes driving the stepped leader. The focus of current research and future research plans are presented.

Electron beam sounding rocket experiments for probing the distant magnetosphere

Electron accelerators on sounding rockets have injected 8-40-keV electrons on closed magnetospheric tail field lines near 250 km altitude in the northern auroral zone. These beams mirrored at the southern conjugate point ad returned as 'echoes' which were detected on the rocket system. The 20 percent of the beam that returned was sufficient to measure field line lengths and verify magnetospheric magnetic models, to measure fluctuating electric fields, and electron pitch angle scattering (6-10) R(E) distant, and to identify 10-100 V field-aligned potentials above the rocket. The experiment gives new insight into the motion of natural electrons in the outer Van Allen radiation belt.

The high-pressure phase diagram of Fe(0.94)O - A possible constituent of the earth's core

Electrical resistivity measurements to pressures of 83 GPa and temperatures ranging from 300 K to 4300 K confirm the presence of both crystalline and liquid metallic phases of FeO at pressures above 60-70 GPa and temperatures above 1000 K. By experimentally determinig the melting temperature of FeO to 100 GPa and of a model-core composition at 83 GPa, it is found that the solid-melt equilibria can be described by complete solid solution across the Fe-FeO system at pressures above 70 GPa. The results indicate that oxygen is a viable and likely candidate for the major light alloying element of the earth's liquid outer core. The data suggest that the temperature at the core-mantle boundary is close to 4800 K and that heat lost out of the core accounts for more than 20 percent of the heat flux observed at the surface.

High-T sub c fluorine-doped YBa2Cu3O(y) films on ceramic substrates by screen printing

Thick films of fluorine-doped YBa2Cu3O(y) were screen printed on highly polished alumina, magnesia spinel, strontium titanate, and yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ) substrates. They were annealed at 1000 C and soaked in oxygen at 450 C, followed by slow cooling to room temperature. The films were characterized by electrical resistivity measurements as a function of temperature and x-ray diffraction. The film on YSZ showed the best characteristics with a T sub c (onset) of 91 K, T sub c (R equals 0) of 88.2 K, and a transition width, delta T sub c (10-90 percent), of approximately 1.7 K. The film adhesion, probably controlled by interdiffusion of cations between the film and the substrate, was good in all cases except on strontium titanate where the film completely detached from the substrate.
