Effects of Na2MoO4 and Na2WO4 on molybdenum and tungsten electrodes for the alkali metal thermoelectric converter (AMTEC)

The effects of adding Na2MoO4 and Na2WO4 to porous Mo and W electrodes, respectively, on the performance and impedance characteristics of the electrodes in an alkali metal thermoelectric converter (AMTEC) were investigated. It was found that corrosion of the porous electrode by Na2MoO4 or Na2WO4 to form Na2MO3O6 and WO2, respectively, and recrystallization of the Mo or W as the salt evaporates, result in major morphological changes including a loss of columnar structure and a significant increase in porosity. This effect is more pronounced in Na2MoO4/Mo electrodes, due to the lower stability of Na2MoO4.

A quasi-passive CMOS pipeline D/A converter

A novel pipeline digital-to-analog converter configuration, based on switched-capacitor techniques, is described. An n-bit D/A conversion can be implemented by cascading n + 1 unit cells. The device count of the circuit increases linearly, not exponentially, with the conversion accuracy. The new configuration can be pipelined. Hence, the conversion rate can be increased without requiring a higher clock rate. An experimental 10-bit DAC prototype has been fabricated using a 3-micron CMOS process. The results show that high-speed, high-accuracy, and low-power operation can be achieved without special process or postprocess trimming.

Converting gravity bins to spherical harmonic coefficients

The gravity bin technique as originally formulated recovers the local gravity field from the bin parameters by finite differencing. The spherical harmonic coefficients of the gravity field are then computed by an orthogonal transformation of the local gravity field. The result differs from that of the traditional method. This paper discusses the difference and proposes a new algorithm to convert the bin parameters to spherical harmonic coefficients. It is shown that the new method produces the same gravity field as the traditional method and maintains the high computational efficiency of the basic gravity bin technique.

Dc-To-Dc Converter Uses Reverse Conduction Of MOSFET's

In modified high-power, phase-controlled, full-bridge, pulse-width-modulated dc-to-dc converters, switching devices power metal oxide/semiconductor field-effect transistors (MOSFET's). Decreases dissipation of power during switching by eliminating approximately 0.7-V forward voltage drop in anti-parallel diodes. Energy-conversion efficiency increased.

Rotary-To-Axial Motion Converter For Valve

Nearly frictionless mechanism converts rotary motion into axial motion. Designed for use in electronically variable pressure-regulator valve. Changes rotary motion imparted by motor into translation that opens and closes valve poppet. Cables spaced equidistantly around edge of fixed disk support movable disk. As movable disk rotated, cables twist, lifting it. When rotated in opposite direction, cables untwist, lowering it. Spider disk helps to prevent cables from tangling. Requires no lubrication and insensitive to contamination in fluid flowing through valve.

Converting information from paper to optical media

The technology of converting large amounts of paper into electronic form is described for use in information management systems based on optical disk storage. The space savings and photographic nature of microfiche are combined in these systems with the advantages of computerized data (fast and flexible retrieval of graphics and text, simultaneous instant access for multiple users, and easy manipulation of data). It is noted that electronic imaging systems offer a unique opportunity to dramatically increase the productivity and profitability of information systems. Particular attention is given to the CALS (Computer-aided Aquisition and Logistic Support) system.

"Forback" Dc-To-Dc Converters

Dc-to-dc power-converter circuits called "forback" resemble circuits of standard configurations called "forward", "flyback", and "Cuk". Circuit employs minor modifications to existing topologies, combines advantages, while eliminating disadvantages, of older circuits.

High-Resolution Rotary-To-Linear Motion Converter

Compact rotary-to-linear motion converter combines high load-carrying ability with finely resolvable movement. Simple and inexpensive to manufacture. Helical coil of metal ribbon wrapped around spool. Bearing supports spool on fixed base. Restraining bar prevents collar from rotating, but allows it to rise and fall. 1,000-turn coil of ribbon 0.010 in. thick provides for translation of collar over distance of 10 inches. Coil made from flattened roll-formed wire. Material inexpensive, strong, and resistant to fatigue.

Converting neutron stars into strange stars

If strange matter is formed in the interior of a neutron star, it will convert the entire neutron star into a strange star. The proposed mechanisms are reviewed for strange matter seeding and the possible strange matter contamination of neutron star progenitors. The conversion process that follows seeding and the recent calculations of the conversion timescale are discussed.

Advances in high temperature components for AMTEC (Alkali Metal Thermal-to-Electric Converter)

The basic performance of Alkali Metal Thermal-to-Electric Converter (AMTEC) cells is well understood, and quantitative modeling of the electrode performance has been carried out. Tests have been carried out to evaluate the high temperature performance of critical AMTEC components. Progress made in understanding the relative performance of AMTEC components, such as electrodes, electrolytes, working fluids, and seals, as device operating temperature is varied is discussed. Most metallic components are especially subject to corrosion in hot liquid alkali metals containing dissolved oxides. Stability issues of AMTEC components may be addressed by life testing, accelerated testing, and modeling based on known kinetic and thermochemical data.

Analog-To-Digital Converter For Sum-Of-Squares Measurements

Analog-to-digital converter (ADC) circuit designed as part of larger circuit intended to measure root-mean-square current on 20-kHz powerline. Provides digital output of 11 bits of data plus 1-bit overflow signal at sampling rate of 4 MHz. Output processed by multiplying-and-accumulating circuitry to obtain sum of squares and digitized current samples accumulated during preset number of consecutive sampling periods. Used to digitize current samples from ADC directly as alternative or auxiliary output. Notable features include low power and fast conversion.

Transient liquid phase diffusion bonding of Udimet 720 for Stirling power converter applications

Udimet 720 has been selected for use on Stirling power converters for space applications. Because Udimet 720 is generally considered susceptible to strain age cracking if traditional fusion welding is used, other joining methods are being considered. A process for transient liquid phase diffusion bonding of Udimet 720 has been theoretically developed in an effort to eliminate the strain age crack concern. This development has taken into account such variables as final grain size, joint homogenization, joint efficiency related to bonding aid material, bonding aid material application method, and thermal cycle.

Proton radiation testing of an 18 bit A/D converter

An 18-bit first order incremental analog to digital converter (ADC) has been constructed in a 2 mu commercial CMOS process. The ADC was exposed to energetic protons at the Harvard Cyclotron Laboratory to simulate latch-up and noise behavior in low earth orbits. Results of the test indicate no latch-up problems and only a small loss in accuracy while operating in proton radiation with energies similar to the South Atlantic Anomaly.

Converting the Minuteman missile into a small satellite launch system

Due to the Strategic Arms Reduction Talks (START) treaty between the United States and Ex-Soviet Union, 450 Minuteman 2 (MM 2) missiles were recently taken out of service. Minotaur Designs Incorporated (MDI) intends to convert the MM 2 ballistic missile from a nuclear warhead carrier into a small satellite launcher. MDI will perform this conversion by acquiring the Minuteman stages, purchasing currently available control wafers, and designing a new shroud and interfaces for the satellite. MDI is also responsible for properly integrating all systems.
