Noninvasive THz-TDS measurements of plasma bounded and optically shielded by Hall thruster wall material

We experimentally demonstrate the capability of terahertz time-domain spectroscopy (THz-TDS) to noninvasively measure the electron density and collision frequency of plasma bounded and optically shielded by Hall thruster wall material. This paper augments the standard THz-TDS plasma diagnostic theory to account for plasma boundaries, presents THz optical property measurements of three different wall materials (grades M, M26, and HP boron nitride composite), and provides electron density and collision frequency measurements of an inductively coupled plasma bounded and optically shielded by each wall material. We find that the electron density measurement capability is weakly impacted by the boundaries, whereas the electron collision frequency measurement capability is strongly reduced by the boundaries. Here, the bounded plasma electron density trends deviate substantially from those of the unbounded plasma.

Study of the Design and Characteristics of a Modified Pulsed Plasma Thruster with Graphite and Tungsten Trigger Electrodes

The paper presents experimental results for a modified pulsed plasma thruster (PPT) with solid propellant, using a coaxial anode–cathode design. Graphite from pencil leads served as propellant, and a tungsten trigger electrode was tested to reduce carbonization effects. Experiments were performed in a vacuum chamber at 0.001 Pa, employing diagnostics such as discharge current/voltage recording, power measurement, ballistic pendulum, time-of-flight (TOF) method, and a Faraday cup. Current and voltage waveforms matched an oscillatory RLC circuit with variable plasma channel resistance. Key discharge parameters were measured, including current pulse duration/amplitude and plasma channel formation/decay dynamics. Impulse bit values, obtained with a ballistic pendulum, reached up to 8.5 μN·s. Increasing trigger capacitor capacitance reduced thrust due to unstable “pre-plasma” formation and partial pre-discharge energy loss. Using TOF and Faraday cup diagnostics, plasma front velocity, ion current amplitude, current density, and ion concentration were determined. Tungsten electrodes produced lower charged particle concentrations than graphite but offered better adhesion resistance, minimal carbonization, and stable long-term performance. The findings support optimizing trigger electrode materials and PPT operating modes to extend lifetime and stabilize thrust output.

Numerical simulations of ion thruster accelerator grid erosion

The highly successful demonstration of ion propulsion on Deep Space 1 has stimulated the study of more demanding applications of ion propulsion. These future applications require ion thrusters capable of providing significantly greater specific impulses and total impulses than the current state-of-the-art Higher specific impulses aggravate the known wear out mechanisms of the ion accelerator system.

A 100 Hour Wear Test of the NASA NSTAR Ion Thruster

In a NASA program to validate 30 cm Xenon ion thruster technology for use in planetary missions a combination of analysis and testing is being used to establish engine reliability. Five long duration tests are planned to identify new failure mechanisms and characterize the parameters which drive known damage accumulation failure modes.

Variable specific impulse high power ion thruster

The power, Isp and thrust of ion thrusters are constrained by ther fixed grid gap in the ion accellerator, which limits performance and life to a limited range in Isp and thrust.
