Cooldown Strategy for Cryogenic Wind Tunnels

Criteria substantiated by experimental and real-time simulation data ensure optimal utlization of liquid nitrogen injected for cooling a 0.3-m transonic cryogenic tunnel (TCT). Research includes simulated cooldowns using procedures normally employed by each of several TCT operators, simulated cooldowns at constant mach number, simulated cooldowns at various constant fan speeds and cooldowns at constant metal-to-gas temperature differences.

Baseline estimation from simultaneous satellite laser tracking

Simultaneous Range Differences (SRDs) to Lageos are obtained by dividing the observing stations into pairs with quasi-simultaneous observations. For each of those pairs the station with the least number of observations is identified, and at its observing epochs interpolated ranges for the alternate station are generated. The SRD observables are obtained by subtracting the actually observed laser range of the station having the least number of observations from the interpolated ranges of the alternate station. On the basis of these observables semidynamic single baseline solutions were performed. The aim of these solutions is to further develop and implement the SRD method in the real data environment, to assess its accuracy, its advantages and disadvantages as related to the range dynamic mode methods, when the baselines are the only parameters of interest. Baselines, using simultaneous laser range observations to Lageos, were also estimated through the purely geometric method. These baselines formed the standards the standards of comparison in the accuracy assessment of the SRD method when compared to that of the range dynamic mode methods. On the basis of this comparison it was concluded that for baselines of regional extent the SRD method is very effective, efficient, and at least as accurate as the range dynamic mode methods, and that on the basis of a simple orbital modeling and a limited orbit adjustment. The SRD method is insensitive to the inconsistencies affecting the terrestrial reference frame and simultaneous adjustment of the Earth Rotation Parameters (ERPs) is not necessary.

The Laboratory for Oceans Computing Facility

The first VAX computer in the Laboratory for Oceans Computing Facility (LOCF) was installed and the facility was largely expanded. The growth is not only in hardware and software, but also in the number of users and in supporting research and development projects. The LOCF serves as a general purpose computing facility for: ocean color research projects, sea ice research projects, processing of the Nimbus-7 Coastal Zone Color Scanner data set, real time ingest and analysis of TIROS-N satellite data, study of the Synthetic Aperture Radar data, study of LANDSAT data, and many others. The physical space and the electrical power layout of the computing room were modified to accommodate all the equipment. The LOCF has several image processing stations which include two International Imaging Systems (IIS) model 75 processors and one Adage processor. The facility has the capability of ingesting the TIROS-N HRPT satellite data on a real time basis. More than 30 software packages were installed on the systems. System software packages, network software, FORTRAN and C compilers, database management software, image processing software, graphics, mathematics and statistics packages, TAE, Catalog Manager, GEMPAK, LAS and many other software developed on the LOCF computers such as SEAPAK have greatly advanced the capability of the LOCF.

Laboratory and theoretical models of planetary-scale instabilities and waves

The continuous low-g environment of the orbiting space shuttle provided a setting for conducting geophysical fluid model experiments with a completely consistent representation of sphericity and the resultant radial gravity found on astrogeophysical objects. This is possible because in zero gravity an experiment can be constructed that has its own radial buoyancy forces. The dielectric forces in a liquid, which are linearly dependent on fluid temperature, give rise to an effectively radial buoyancy force when a radial electrostatic field is applied. The Geophysical Fluid Flow Cell (GFFC) experiment is an implementation of this idea in which fluid is contained between two rotating hemispheres that are differentially heated and stressed with a large ac voltage. The GFFC flew on Spacelab 3 in May 1985. Data in the form of global Schlieren images of convective patterns were obtained for a large variety of configurations. These included situations of rapid rotation (large Taylor numbers), low rotation, large and small thermal forcing, and situations with applied meridional temperature gradients. The analysis and interpretation of the GFFC-85 data are being conducted. Improvements were developed to the GFFC instrument that will allow for real-time (TV) display of convection data and for near-real-time interactive experiments. These experiments, on the transition to global turbulence, the breakdown of rapidly rotating convective planforms and other phenomena, are scheduled to be carried out on the International Microgravity Laboratory (IML-1) aboard the shuttle in June 1990.

A Phase Locked High Speed Real-Time Interferometry System for Large Amplitude Unsteady Flows

A high speed phase locked interferometry system has been designed and developed for real-time measurements of the dynamic stall flow over a pitching airfoil. Point diffraction interferograms of incipient flow separation over a sinusoidally oscillating airfoil have been obtained at rates of up to 20 KHz and for free stream Mach numbers of 0.3 and 0.45. The images were recorded on ASA 125 and ASA 400 film using a drum camera. Special electronic timing and synchronizing circuits were developed to trigger the laser light source from the camera, and to initiate acquisition of the interferogram sequence from any desired phase angle of oscillation. The airfoil instantaneous angle of attack data provided by an optical encoder was recorded via a FIFO and in EPROM into a microcomputer. The interferograms have been analyzed using software developed in-house to get quantitative flow density and pressure distributions.

Unifying Model-Based and Reactive Programming within a Model-Based Executive

Real-time, model-based, deduction has recently emerged as a vital component in AI's tool box for developing highly autonomous reactive systems. Yet one of the current hurdles towards developing model-based reactive systems is the number of methods simultaneously employed, and their corresponding melange of programming and modeling languages. This paper offers an important step towards unification. We introduce RMPL, a rich modeling language that combines probabilistic, constraint-based modeling with reactive programming constructs, while offering a simple semantics in terms of hidden state Markov processes. We introduce probabilistic, hierarchical constraint automata (PHCA), which allow Markov processes to be expressed in a compact representation that preserves the modularity of RMPL programs. Finally, a model-based executive, called Reactive Burton is described that exploits this compact encoding to perform efficIent simulation, belief state update and control sequence generation.

NASA Advanced Propeller Research

Acoustic and aerodynamic research at NASA Lewis Research Center on advanced propellers is reviewed including analytical and experimental results on both single and counterrotation. Computational tools used to calculate the detailed flow and acoustic i e l d s a r e described along with wind tunnel tests to obtain data for code verification . Results from two kinds of experiments are reviewed: ( 1 ) performance and near field noise at cruise conditions as measured in the NASA Lewis 8-by 6-Foot Wind Tunnel and ( 2 ) farfield noise and performance for takeoff/approach conditions as measured in the NASA Lewis 9-by 15-Font Anechoic Wind Tunnel. Detailed measurements of steady blade surface pressures are described along with vortex flow phenomena at off design conditions . Near field noise at cruise is shown to level out or decrease as tip relative Mach number is increased beyond 1.15. Counterrotation interaction noise is shown to be a dominant source at take off but a secondary source at cruise. Effects of unequal rotor diameters and rotor-to-rotor spacing on interaction noise a real so illustrated. Comparisons of wind tunnel acoustic measurements to flight results are made. Finally, some future directions in advanced propeller research such as swirl recovery vanes, higher sweep, forward sweep, and ducted propellers are discussed.
