Astrophysical Neutrino Sources as Colliders

High-energy neutrinos arise from processes at large center-of-mass energies, offering a window to test physics at comparable scales or beyond those accessible in collider experiments on Earth. Here, we present a recipe for extracting two-sided bounds on the inelastic $pp$ and $pγ$ cross sections from neutrino point-source data, by independently constraining every astrophysical input (cosmic-ray luminosities and target densities) through electromagnetic observations or theoretical arguments. The cross section is then the only remaining free parameter. Applying this framework to the IceCube associations with TXS~0506+056, NGC~1068, and the Galactic Plane, to a stacked population of eleven X-ray bright Seyfert galaxies, to the ultra-high-energy KM3NeT event KM3-230213A, and to projected observations of ultra-high-energy neutrinos, we obtain constraints that span center-of-mass energies from $\sqrt{s}\sim 1$ GeV to $\sim 10^{5}$ GeV, some of which are well beyond the reach of the LHC and, for the $pγ$ channel, beyond HERA. Several of these bounds are more stringent than unitarity limits.

DOUBLY-STRANGE BARYON SPECTROSCOPY WITH THE GLUEX EXPERIMENT: GROUND STATE ¿(1320) PHOTOPRODUCTION CROSS SECTION AND PROPERTIES

In the light-quark sector, traditional quark models and, more recently, lattice QCD calculations have predicted many more baryon states than have been experimentally observed. The hyperons, baryons with strange-quark content, in particular abundantly lack these observed states, and past observations are statistically limited. For multi-strange hyperons the matter is much worse and the production mechanisms of these states in photoproduction are very poorly understood. By capitalizing on the narrow peaks, as compared to the broad and overlapping N* and ¿* states, characteristic of the lowest lying ¿ resonances, the systematic aspects of the spectrum can be analyzed. In addition, we can measure experimental observables such as the production cross section to study the production mechanisms of the ¿ resonances. By accumulating various experimental observables, this goal could be accomplished through Partial Wave Analysis (PWA). The main body of work presented in this dissertation is the physics analysis and systematic study of the production cross section for the doubly strange octet ground state baryon (¿(1320)) in the exclusive t-channel photoproduction reaction ¿p ¿ K+Y* ¿ K+(K+¿-)Y* where ¿- ¿ ¿p- and ¿ ¿ pp-. The spin quantum number of ¿(1320) is also extracted and discussed. A preliminary result to extract the mass of ¿(1320) is also explored as a result of the statistical limitations of current measurements. Furthermore, the spectrum of the excited ¿* baryons are explored and discussed in the ¿*- ¿ K-¿ decay channel. The studies on the ground state and excited ¿ baryon are performed using the GlueX Phase-I (GlueX-I) data set. We have extracted differential cross sections from seven beam photon energy bins for E¿ ¿ [6.4,11.4] GeV1 and for -t < 2.4 GeV2 in the production of K+Y*. 1Natural units (c = 1) are used for the entire body of work.

Polarization Measurements of p ↑ and 3 He ↑ Beams at RHIC and Future EIC Using the Polarized Atomic Hydrogen Gas Jet Target

At the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC), the Polarized Atomic Hydrogen Gas Jet Target polarimeter (HJET) is employed for the precise measurement of the absolute transverse (vertical) polarization of proton beams, achieving low systematic uncertainties of approximately σ$^{syst}_P$/P≤0.5% . The acquired experimental data not only facilitated the determination of single A N (t) and double A NN (t) spin analyzing powers for 100 and 255 GeV proton beams, but also revealed a non-zero Pomeron spin-flip contribution through a Regge fit. Preliminary results obtained for forward inelastic p ↑ p and elastic p ↑ A analyzing powers will be discussed. The success of the HJET at RHIC suggests its potential application for proton beam polarimetry at the upcoming Electron–Ion Collider (EIC), aiming for an accuracy of 1%. Moreover, the provided analysis indicates that the RHIC HJET target can serve as a tool for the precision calibration, with the required accuracy, of the 3 He beam polarization at the EIC.

Fast redox switches lead to rapid transformation of goethite in humid tropical soils: A Mössbauer spectroscopy study

Abstract Humid tropical forest soils experience frequent rainfall, which limits oxygen diffusion and creates redox heterogeneity in upland soils. In this study we gauged the effect of short‐term anoxic conditions on Fe mineralogy of relatively Fe‐ and C‐rich surface soils (C/Fe mole ratio ∼5) from a humid tropical forest in Puerto Rico. Soils subjected to 4‐d oxic/anoxic oscillation were characterized by selective chemical extractions, Mössbauer spectroscopy (MBS), and X‐ray diffraction. Chemical extraction data suggested that rapidly switching redox conditions had subtle effects on bulk Fe mineralogy. Mössbauer, on the other hand, indicated that (a) the soil Fe is a mixture of goethites of varying characteristics with minor contributions from ferrihydrite (<5%) and Fe(III)‐organic matter (OM) phases (∼10%), and (b) anoxic conditions rapidly transformed all forms of goethite to relatively stable Fe oxides. Such fast changes in goethite features could be due to rapid depletion and sorption of bio‐released structural Al or sorbed OM onto residual soil components. The rapid temporal changes in MBS parameters and corresponding pore water nominal oxidation state of C values suggest that Fe‐C transformations in these upland tropical soils are complex and intricately coupled. A comprehensive understanding of the fate of Fe, Al, and OM (Fe‐organic moieties) during redox switches and concurrent changes in pore water chemistry is critical for development of robust transport models in humid tropical soils, which are subject to episodic low‐redox events.

Search for doubly and singly charged Higgs bosons decaying into vector bosons in multi-lepton final states with the ATLAS detector using proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV

A search for charged Higgs bosons decaying into W ± W ± or W ± Z bosons is performed, involving experimental signatures with two leptons of the same charge, or three or four leptons with a variety of charge combinations, missing transverse momentum and jets. A data sample of proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 13 TeV recorded with the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider between 2015 and 2018 is used. The data correspond to a total integrated luminosity of 139 fb -1 . The search is guided by a type-II seesaw model that extends the scalar sector of the Standard Model with a scalar triplet, leading to a phenomenology that includes doubly and singly charged Higgs bosons. Two scenarios are explored, corresponding to the pair production of doubly charged H ±± bosons, or the associated production of a doubly charged H ±± boson and a singly charged H ± boson. No significant deviations from the Standard Model predictions are observed. H ±± bosons are excluded at 95% confidence level up to 350 GeV and 230 GeV for the pair and associated production modes, respectively.

Measurements of the production cross-section for a Z boson in association with b -jets in proton-proton collisions at √s = 13 TeV with the ATLAS detector

This paper presents a measurement of the production cross-section of a Z boson in association with b-jets, in proton-proton collisions at √s = 13 TeV with the ATLAS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider using data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 35.6 fb -1 . Inclusive and differential cross-sections are measured for events containing a Z boson decaying into electrons or muons and produced in association with at least one or at least two b-jets with transverse momentum p T > 20 GeV and rapidity |y| < 2.5. Predictions from several Monte Carlo generators based on leading-order (LO) or next-to-leading-order (NLO) matrix elements interfaced with a parton-shower simulation and testing different flavour schemes for the choice of initial-state partons are compared with measured cross-sections. We find that the 5-flavour number scheme predictions at NLO accuracy agree better with data than 4-flavour number scheme ones. This is because the 4-flavour number scheme predictions underestimate data in events with at least one b-jet.

Crack width control and mechanical properties of low carbon engineered cementitious composites (ECC)

Engineered Cementitious Composites (ECC) have superior properties with high tensile ductility and tight crack width compared to conventional concrete. The properties of ECC are significantly influenced by the material composition which can be tailored to enhance the sustainability of ECC. Towards this goal, recycled crumb rubber (CR) and silica fume (SF) were used to tailor the properties of a polypropylene-fiber reinforced ECC with a low carbon binder based on limestone calcined clay cement (LC3) in this study. Crumb rubber was found to be effective in enhancing strain-hardening performance and reducing the width of the multiple microcracks. However, a loss of compressive strength was accompanied by an increasing amount of CR. While silica fume or lower w/b ratio enhanced the compressive strength, the crack width of ECC increased at higher SF content or lower w/b. The underlying mechanisms of these trends were traced to the alteration of the matrix fracture toughness and fiber/matrix interfacial bond. Rubber particle bridging was found to contribute to crack width control. Finally, the combined use of the LC3 green binder and CR led to a lowering of the embodied and operational carbon footprint of ECC.

Influence of Charge Transport Layers on Capacitance Measured in Halide Perovskite Solar Cells

Capacitance-based techniques were previously used to measure the electrical properties of halide perovskite solar cells (PSCs) such as defect activation energy and density, carrier concentration, and dielectric constant, which provide key information for evaluating the device performance. Herein, we show that capacitance-based techniques cannot be used to reliably analyze the properties of defects in the perovskite layer or at its interface, since the high-frequency capacitance signature is due to the response of charge carriers in the hole-transport layer (HTL). For HTL-free PSCs, the high-frequency capacitance can be considered as the geometric capacitance for analyzing the dielectric constant of the perovskite layer, since there is no trapping and de-trapping of charge carriers in the perovskite layer. We also find that the low-frequency capacitance signature can be used to calculate the activation energy of the ionic conductivity of the perovskite layer, but the overlapping effects with charge transport materials must be avoided.

First measurement of the |t|-dependence of coherent J/ψ photonuclear production

The first measurement of the cross section for coherent J/ψ photoproduction as a function of |t|, the square of the momentum transferred between the incoming and outgoing target nucleus, is presented. The data were measured with the ALICE detector in ultra-peripheral Pb–Pb collisions at a centre-of-mass energy per nucleon pair $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$=5.02TeV with the J/ψ produced in the central rapidity region |y|<0.8, which corresponds to the small Bjorken-x range (0.3-1.4)×10 -3 . The measured |t|-dependence is not described by computations based only on the Pb nuclear form factor, while the photonuclear cross section is better reproduced by models including shadowing according to the leading-twist approximation, or gluon-saturation effects from the impact-parameter dependent Balitsky–Kovchegov equation. These new results are therefore a valid tool to constrain the relevant model parameters and to investigate the transverse gluonic structure at very low Bjorken-x.

Quantification and evaluation of plastic waste in the United States

To develop viable solutions for reducing plastic waste, spatially explicit data on the management of these materials are critical. Here we employ statistical and geospatial methods to present a comprehensive assessment of plastic waste in the United States by resin type at the state, county, and local levels. Of the estimated 44 Mt of plastic waste managed in 2019 domestically, approximately 86% was landfilled, 9% was combusted, and 5% was recycled. Landfilled plastics represented significant losses to the country's economy in 2019: an average of US$7.2 billion in market value, about 3.4 EJ as embodied energy (equivalent to 12% of energy consumption by the industrial sector), and 1.5 EJ as an energy source (equivalent to 5.5% and 5% of energy consumption by the industrial and transportation sectors, respectively). Lastly, we posit that substantial amount of landfilled plastic waste could be recovered through advanced sorting, existing, and emerging recycling processes.

Measurement of the transverse momentum distribution of Drell–Yan lepton pairs in proton–proton collisions at √s=13 TeV with the ATLAS detector

This paper describes precision measurements of the transverse momentum $p_\mathrm {T}^{\ell \ell }$ ($\ell =e,\mu $) and of the angular variable $\phi ^{*}_{\eta }$ distributions of Drell–Yan lepton pairs in a mass range of 66–116 GeV. The analysis uses data from 36.1 fb$^{-1}$ of proton–proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of $\sqrt{s}=13\,$TeV collected by the ATLAS experiment at the LHC in 2015 and 2016. Measurements in electron-pair and muon-pair final states are performed in the same fiducial volumes, corrected for detector effects, and combined. Compared to previous measurements in proton–proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}=7$ and $8\,$TeV, these new measurements probe perturbative QCD at a higher centre-of-mass energy with a different composition of initial states. They reach a precision of 0.2$\%$ for the normalized spectra at low values of $p_\mathrm {T}^{\ell \ell }$. The data are compared with different QCD predictions, where it is found that predictions based on resummation approaches can describe the full spectrum within uncertainties.

Measurement of the CP-violating phase ϕ s in B$_s^0$→J/ψϕ decays in ATLAS at 13 TeV

A measurement of the B$_s^0$→J/ψϕ decay parameters using 80.5 fb -1 of integrated luminosity collected with the ATLAS detector from 13 Te proton–proton collisions at the LHC is presented. The measured parameters include the CP-violating phase ϕ s , the width difference Δ Γ s between the B$_s^0$ meson mass eigenstates and the average decay width Γ s . The values measured for the physical parameters are combined with those from 19.2fb -1 of 7 and 8 Te data, leading to the following: ϕs=-0.087±0.036(stat.)±0.021(syst.)rad ΔΓ s =0.0657±0.0043(stat.)±0.0037(syst.)ps -1 Γ s =0.6703±0.0014(stat.)±0.0018(syst.)ps -1 Results for ϕ s and Δ Γ s are also presented as 68% confidence level contours in the ϕ s –Δ Γ s plane. Furthermore the transversity amplitudes and corresponding strong phases are measured. ϕ s and Δ Γ s measurements are in agreement with the Standard Model predictions.

Production of pions, kaons, (anti-)protons and ϕ mesons in Xe–Xe collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 5.44 TeV

The first measurement of the production of pions, kaons, (anti-)protons and ϕ mesons at midrapidity in Xe–Xe collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 5.44 TeV is presented. Transverse momentum (p T ) spectra and p T -integrated yields are extracted in several centrality intervals bridging from p–Pb to mid-central Pb–Pb collisions in terms of final-state multiplicity. The study of Xe–Xe and Pb–Pb collisions allows systems at similar charged-particle multiplicities but with different initial geometrical eccentricities to be investigated. A detailed comparison of the spectral shapes in the two systems reveals an opposite behaviour for radial and elliptic flow. In particular, this study shows that the radial flow does not depend on the colliding system when compared at similar charged-particle multiplicity. In terms of hadron chemistry, the previously observed smooth evolution of particle ratios with multiplicity from small to large collision systems is also found to hold in Xe–Xe. In addition, our results confirm that two remarkable features of particle production at LHC energies are also valid in the collision of medium-sized nuclei: the lower proton-to-pion ratio with respect to the thermal model expectations and the increase of the ϕ-to-pion ratio with increasing final-state multiplicity.

BOILER Experiment Material Characterization and HFIR Irradiation Status

Pre-oxidized alumina-forming austenitic (AFA) steels have been previously identified as candidate alloys for structural components in lead-cooled fast reactors (LFRs). They offer compatibility with liquid Pb, high-temperature strength, formability, and cost advantages. However, variations in Ni content can affect the formation and stability of the Al 2 O 3 layer, influencing compatibility with liquid Pb. The effect of fast neutron irradiation on Al 2 O 3 stability in liquid Pb also requires evaluation. Therefore, understanding how Ni concentrations impacts pre-oxidized AFAs under combined extremes of irradiation and liquid metal corrosion is essential before safe deployment. The Behavior Of In-situ Lead Environments & Radiation (BOILER) experiment was developed under the Nuclear Science User Facilities (NSUF) program to integrate alloy development, irradiation experiment design, and irradiated materials characterization. In this effort, two pre-oxidized AFA steels with 20 wt% and 25 wt% Ni, hereinafter referred to as GA05-20Ni and GA05-25Ni, were produced. An irradiation experiment was then planned for the High Flux Isotope Reactor (HFIR), designed for passive heating of irradiation rabbit capsules from gamma heating in the HFIR flux trap (1 × 10 15 n/cm 2 ·s, >0.1 MeV). This heating melts Pb and exposes the pre-oxidized AFA steel specimens to nominal temperatures of 400 and 650°C. Detailed neutronics and thermal analyses were performed, though based on nominal design rather than as-built, as-irradiated conditions. This report documents further characterization of the pre-oxidized AFAs in the unirradiated condition. It also includes as-built thermal analysis using measured component dimensions, updated fill gas concentrations, and actual HFIR irradiation positions. Finally, the report summarizes capsule fabrication, current irradiation status, projected completion, estimated damage accumulation, and initial plans for post-irradiation examination plans.
