The continuous spectrum of Markarian 421 during periods of X-ray satellite observations

New UBVRI photometry of Mrk 421 obtained during periods of X-ray satellite observations are presented. An X-ray light curve for 1977 November from the HEAO A-1 experiment is also given. The decomposition of the UBVR fluxes into a compact nonthermal component and an extended galactic component shows that there are coordinated variations in the optical nonthermal and X-ray emission. The data are consistent with the hypothesis that the mini-BL Lac object is emitting by the synchrontron-self-Compton process. The host galaxy of this composite source has properties like those of a giant elliptical.

Periodic solutions about the collinear Lagrangian solution in the general problem of three bodies

The article describes the solutions near Lagrange's circular collinear configuration in the planar problem of three bodies with three finite masses. The article begins with a detailed review of the properties of Lagrange's collinear solution. Lagrange's quintic equation is derived and several expressions are given for the angular velocity of the rotating frame. The equations of motion are then linearized near the circular collinear solution, and the characteristic equation is also derived in detail. The different types of roots and their corresponding solutions are discussed. The special case of two equal outer masses receives special attention, as well as the special case of two small outer masses. Finally, the fundamental family of periodic solutions is extended by numerical integration all the way up to and past a binary collision orbit. The stability and the bifurcations of this family are briefly enumerated.

Meteoroid impact into short-period comet nuclei

The effects of extended meteoroid bombardment on short-period comet nuclei are examined and their possible implications for asteroid and meteorite studies are discussed. It is suggested that after devolatilization of the nucleus, the accumulated material might combine with primary cometary solids to produce environments conducive to the formation of polymict brecciated meteorites and to influence reflectance spectra of the asteroids. Such meteoroids removed from active nuclei during degassing could be placed in trajectories that might evolve into earth-crossing orbits.

Three-dimensional periodic disturbances acting upon airfoils in cascade

A theory is developed for three-dimensional periodic gusts interacting with loaded airfoils. The unsteady disturbances are linearized with respect to the mean potential flow of the airfoils. The vorticity transport equation is then integrated analytically in a Lagrangian form. The vorticity vector shows strong variations in its magnitude and wavelength as it interacts with the flowfield of a lifting airfoil. The streamwise component of the vorticity increases significantly with flow acceleration and flow turning. For simplicity the rectangular fan approximation is used and a single Helmholtz-like equation is derived to characterize the unsteady 3D flowfield. This is a new and significant result. The present theory is first applied to symmetric airfoils.

High energy X-ray observations of CYG X-3 from from OSO-8: Further evidence of a 34.1 day period

The X-ray source Cyg X-3 (=4U2030+40) was observed with the high energy X-ray spectrometer on OSO-8 for two weeks in 1975 and in 1976 and for one week in 1977. No change in spectral shape and intensity above 23 keV was observed from year to year. No correlation is observed between the source's intensity and the phase of the 34.1 day period discovered by Molteni, et al. (1980). The pulsed fraction of the 4.8 hour light curve between 23 and 73 keV varies from week to week, however, and the magnitude of the pulsed fraction appears to be correlated with the 34.1 day phase. No immediate explanation of this behavior is apparent in terms of previously proposed models of the source.

An experimental investigation of gapwise periodicity and unsteady aerodynamic response in an oscillating cascade. 1: Experimental and theoretical results

Tests were conducted on a linear cascade of airfoils oscillating in pitch to measure the unsteady pressure response on selected blades along the leading edge plane of the cascade, over the chord of the center blade, and on the sidewall in the plane of the leading edge. The pressure data were reduced to Fourier coefficient form for direct comparison, and were also processed to yield integrated loads and, particularly, the aerodynamic damping coefficient. Results from the unsteady Verdon/Caspar theory for cascaded blades with nonzero thickness and camber were compared with the experimental measurements. The three primary results are: (1) from the leading edge plane blade data, the cascade was judged to be periodic in unsteady flow over the range of parameters tested; (2) the interblade phase angle was found to be the single most important parameter affecting the stability of the oscillating cascade blades; and (3) the real blade theory and the experiment were in excellent agreement for the several cases chosen for comparison.

Fast generation of three-dimensional computational boundary-conforming periodic grids of C-type

A fast computer program, GRID3C, was developed to generate multilevel three dimensional, C type, periodic, boundary conforming grids for the calculation of realistic turbomachinery and propeller flow fields. The technique is based on two analytic functions that conformally map a cascade of semi-infinite slits to a cascade of doubly infinite strips on different Riemann sheets. Up to four consecutively refined three dimensional grids are automatically generated and permanently stored on four different computer tapes. Grid nonorthogonality is introduced by a separate coordinate shearing and stretching performed in each of three coordinate directions. The grids are easily clustered closer to the blade surface, the trailing and leading edges and the hub or shroud regions by changing appropriate input parameters. Hub and duct (or outer free boundary) have different axisymmetric shapes. A vortex sheet of arbitrary thickness emanating smoothly from the blade trailing edge is generated automatically by GRID3C. Blade cross sectional shape, chord length, twist angle, sweep angle, and dihedral angle can vary in an arbitrary smooth fashion in the spanwise direction.

Periodic changes in the compact radio structure of SS 433

VLBI observations of SS 433 at 2.3 GHz made on 12 days between 1979 May and 1980 August yield the following results: (a) the position angle of the radio 'jet' of angular size of about 0.1 arcsec varies approximately sinusoidally about a mean value of 100.2 + or - 1.7 deg with an amplitude of 19.3 + or - 3.4 deg for a period fixed at 163.6 days. This resolves the ambiguity in the two angles of the optical model of Abell and Margon and assigns the inclination of the axis of the precession cone to the 79 deg value; (b) the position angle of the radio structure on this scale lags that of the optical model by 17.4 + or - 1.6 days; and (c) at least some of the radio emitting material appears to propagate away from the core in blobs. Using the rate of change of angular separation of the blobs from the core obtained from measurements on four different days, and assuming that the radio emission is traveling at the speed derived for the optical jets from the kinematic model, a distance to SS 433 of 5.1 + or - 0.5 kpc is obtained.

Atmospheric angular momentum and the length of day - A common fluctuation with a period near 50 days

Four astronomical measures of changes in the length of day obtained in 1979 have been shown to exhibit the same, approximately 50-day fluctuation. To find whether this fluctuation was persistent, and of meteorological origin, lunar laser ranging observations and wind data deduced from sources distributed over the globe were analyzed. A high degree of correlation was found between the two sets of data. It is implied that the 50-day period fluctuations in length of day are real and related to meteorological effects. Observed changes in length of day can provide a constraint for models for atmospheric flow, and a partial check for global analyses of such motions.

The response of a linear baroclinic equatorial ocean to periodic forcing

An investigation is conducted regarding the periodic response of the linear inviscid shallow water equations in a meridionally unbounded basin to zonal forcings at a single low frequency omega. A general solution in the long wave approximation and on an equatorial beta-plane is obtained by summing the Kelvin mode and the finite sum of Rossby modes whose turning points lie equatorward of the turning latitude at frequency omega. The results of the investigation suggest that even if the low frequency forcing has a simple structure, considerable spatial inhomogeneity in the deep ocean response would have to be expected. On the basis of linear inviscid theory, some conclusions are drawn about the causes of the differences between equatorial thermocline response in the Atlantic and Pacific.

Periodic solutions of the Riccati equation

It is shown that the Riccati equations of control theory are generically Morse-Smale. The existence of periodic solutions is explicitly demonstrated. The principal contribution here is thought to be the presentation of a mathematical structure in which to study the Riccati equation. Mathematical structures already in the literature are systematically exploited. It is also shown that most problems of the Riccati equation can be reduced to problems in linear algebra. A framework is developed for studying the Riccati equation, and the proof that the Morse-Smale conditions are satisfied is outlined.

Dynamics of bi-periodic structures

In order to gain insight into the dynamics of biperiodic aerospace structures, a variety of one- and two-dimensional biperiodic structures are considered. It is shown that bands in which natural frequencies lie for periodic structures are further subdivided as a consequence of the biperiodicity. Analytical solutions for the modes and frequencies of finite-length one-dimensional biperiodic structures are obtained for general boundary conditions. A transmission method is developed to simplify the application of boundary conditions. Some modes are found to occur at frequencies outside the frequency bands predicted for biperiodic structures. Two-dimensional biperiodic crossed beam grillage and truss structures are considered in the present study.

Wave scattering from a periodic dielectric surface for a general angle of incidence

Electromagnetic waves scattered from a periodic dielectric and perfectly conducting surface are studied for a general angle of incidence. It is shown that the one-dimensional corrugated surface can be solved by using two scalar functions: the components of the electric and magnetic fields along the row direction of the surface, and appropriate boundary conditions to obtain simple matrix equations. Results are compared to the case where the incident angle wave vector is perpendicular to the row direction. Numerical results demonstrate that energy conservation and reciprocity are obeyed for scattering by sinusoidal surfaces for the general case, which checks the consistency of the formalism.

Periodic spectrum variations in helium-rich stars

Spectroscopic observations of four helium-rich stars are presented. In HD 37776, antiphase variations of Si III and He I have been found, which represent another point of similarity to the Ap phenomenon. The remarkable H-alpha emission variations in Sigma Ori E are illustrated with uniform phase coverage, and strict periodicity over a five-year interval is shown. A radial-velocity study of HD 64740 shows constancy to within the accuracy of the observations. Finally, Delta Ori B is confirmed as a helium-rich star.

On the distribution of orbits among long-period comets

The distribution of the axes defining the planes and orientations of the orbits of 542 long-period comets are analyzed. The directions of the perihelia and of the oriented plane normals show significant nonuniformity in their distributions. The preferred direction of perihelia near the apex of solar motion is refined to an (1 sigma) error circle of 20.6 deg, and possible concentrations of the plane normals and the directions of perihelion velocity along roughly orthogonal directions are noted, although the error circles extend to nearly full hemispheres. Planes of preference (and avoidance) are found from the distribution ellipsoids of the three orbital axes, with the perihelion directions lying preferentially along the galactic plane. The distribution ellipsoids of all three sets of orbital axes exhibit anisotropies roughly twice those expected for random distributions.
