Performance Potential of Mixed Data Management Modes for Heterogeneous Memory Systems

Many high-performance systems now include different types of memory devices within the same compute platform to meet strict performance and cost constraints. Such heterogeneous memory systems often include an upper-level tier with better performance, but limited capacity, and lower-level tiers with higher capacity, but less bandwidth and longer latencies for reads and writes. To utilize the different memory layers efficiently, current systems rely on hardware-directed, memory -side caching or they provide facilities in the operating system (OS) that allow applications to make their own data-tier assignments. Since these data management options each come with their own set of trade-offs, many systems also include mixed data management configurations that allow applications to employ hardware- and software-directed management simultaneously, but for different portions of their address space. Despite the opportunity to address limitations of stand-alone data management options, such mixed management modes are under-utilized in practice, and have not been evaluated in prior studies of complex memory hardware. In this work, we develop custom program profiling, configurations, and policies to study the potential of mixed data management modes to outperform hardware- or software-based management schemes alone. Our experiments, conducted on an Intel ® Knights Landing platform with high-bandwidth memory, demonstrate that the mixed data management mode achieves the same or better performance than the best stand-alone option for five memory intensive benchmark applications (run separately and in isolation), resulting in an average speedup compared to the best stand-alone policy of over 10 %, on average.

Search for charged Higgs bosons decaying into a top quark and a bottom quark at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV with the ATLAS detector

A search for charged Higgs bosons decaying into a top quark and a bottom quark is presented. The data analysed correspond to 139 fb -1 of proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV, recorded with the ATLAS detector at the LHC. The production of a heavy charged Higgs boson in association with a top quark and a bottom quark, pp → tbH + → tbtb, is explored in the H + mass range from 200 to 2000 GeV using final states with jets and one electron or muon. Events are categorised according to the multiplicity of jets and b-tagged jets, and multivariate analysis techniques are used to discriminate between signal and background events. No significant excess above the background-only hypothesis is observed and exclusion limits are derived for the production cross-section times branching ratio of a charged Higgs boson as a function of its mass; they range from 3.6 pb at 200 GeV to 0.036 pb at 2000 GeV at 95% confidence level. The results are interpreted in the hMSSM and M$_{h}^{125}$ scenarios.

Search for doubly and singly charged Higgs bosons decaying into vector bosons in multi-lepton final states with the ATLAS detector using proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV

A search for charged Higgs bosons decaying into W ± W ± or W ± Z bosons is performed, involving experimental signatures with two leptons of the same charge, or three or four leptons with a variety of charge combinations, missing transverse momentum and jets. A data sample of proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 13 TeV recorded with the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider between 2015 and 2018 is used. The data correspond to a total integrated luminosity of 139 fb -1 . The search is guided by a type-II seesaw model that extends the scalar sector of the Standard Model with a scalar triplet, leading to a phenomenology that includes doubly and singly charged Higgs bosons. Two scenarios are explored, corresponding to the pair production of doubly charged H ±± bosons, or the associated production of a doubly charged H ±± boson and a singly charged H ± boson. No significant deviations from the Standard Model predictions are observed. H ±± bosons are excluded at 95% confidence level up to 350 GeV and 230 GeV for the pair and associated production modes, respectively.

Search for pair production of third-generation scalar leptoquarks decaying into a top quark and a τ-lepton in pp collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV with the ATLAS detector

A search for pair production of third-generation scalar leptoquarks decaying into a top quark and a τ-lepton is presented. The search is based on a dataset of pp collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV recorded with the ATLAS detector during Run 2 of the Large Hadron Collider, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 139 fb -1 . Events are selected if they have one light lepton (electron or muon) and at least one hadronically decaying τ -lepton, or at least two light leptons. In addition, two or more jets, at least one of which must be identified as containing b-hadrons, are required. Six final states, defined by the multiplicity and flavour of lepton candidates, are considered in the analysis. Each of them is split into multiple event categories to simultaneously search for the signal and constrain several leading backgrounds. The signal-rich event categories require at least one hadronically decaying τ-lepton candidate and exploit the presence of energetic final-state objects, which is characteristic of signal events. No significant excess above the Standard Model expectation is observed in any of the considered event categories, and 95% CL upper limits are set on the production cross section as a function of the leptoquark mass, for different assumptions about the branching fractions into tτ and bν. Scalar leptoquarks decaying exclusively into tτ are excluded up to masses of 1.43 TeV while, for a branching fraction of 50% into tτ, the lower mass limit is 1.22 TeV.

Measurements of the production cross-section for a Z boson in association with b -jets in proton-proton collisions at √s = 13 TeV with the ATLAS detector

This paper presents a measurement of the production cross-section of a Z boson in association with b-jets, in proton-proton collisions at √s = 13 TeV with the ATLAS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider using data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 35.6 fb -1 . Inclusive and differential cross-sections are measured for events containing a Z boson decaying into electrons or muons and produced in association with at least one or at least two b-jets with transverse momentum p T > 20 GeV and rapidity |y| < 2.5. Predictions from several Monte Carlo generators based on leading-order (LO) or next-to-leading-order (NLO) matrix elements interfaced with a parton-shower simulation and testing different flavour schemes for the choice of initial-state partons are compared with measured cross-sections. We find that the 5-flavour number scheme predictions at NLO accuracy agree better with data than 4-flavour number scheme ones. This is because the 4-flavour number scheme predictions underestimate data in events with at least one b-jet.

Observation of the associated production of a top quark and a Z boson in pp collisions at $ \sqrt{s} $= 13 TeV with the ATLAS detector

Single top-quark production in association with a Z boson, where the Z boson decays to a pair of charged leptons, is measured in the trilepton channel. The proton-proton collision data collected by the ATLAS experiment from 2015 to 2018 at a centre-of-mass energy of 13 TeV are used, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 139 fb -1 . Events containing three isolated charged leptons (electrons or muons) and two or three jets, one of which is identified as containing a b -hadron, are selected. The main backgrounds are from \( t\overline{t}Z \) and diboson production. Neural networks are used to improve the background rejection and extract the signal. The measured cross-section for t ℓ + ℓ - q production, including non-resonant dilepton pairs with \( {m}_{{\mathrm{\ell}}^{+}{\mathrm{\ell}}^{-}} \) > 30 GeV, is 97 ± 13 (stat.) ± 7 (syst.) fb, consistent with the Standard Model prediction.

Search for pairs of scalar leptoquarks decaying into quarks and electrons or muons in $ \sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV pp collisions with the ATLAS detector

A search for new-physics resonances decaying into a lepton and a jet performed by the ATLAS experiment is presented. Scalar leptoquarks pair-produced in pp collisions at s = 13 TeV at the Large Hadron Collider are considered using an integrated luminosity of 139 fb-1, corresponding to the full Run 2 dataset. They are searched for in events with two electrons or two muons and two or more jets, including jets identified as arising from the fragmentation of c- or b-quarks. The observed yield in each channel is consistent with the Standard Model background expectation. Leptoquarks with masses below 1.8 TeV and 1.7 TeV are excluded in the electron and muon channels, respectively, assuming a branching ratio into a charged lepton and a quark of 100%, with minimal dependence on the quark flavour. Upper limits on the aforementioned branching ratio are also given as a function of the leptoquark mass.

The Dutch–Belgian Registry of Stereotactic Body Radiation Therapy for Liver Metastases: Clinical Outcomes of 515 Patients and 668 Metastases

Although various studies have reported that stereotactic body radiation therapy (SBRT) for liver metastases has high local control rates and relatively low toxicity, most series included a small number of patients. We aimed to validate these outcomes in a large multi-institution patient cohort treated in accordance with a common protocol.

Performance of the ATLAS muon triggers in Run 2

The performance of the ATLAS muon trigger system is evaluated with proton-proton ( pp ) and heavy-ion (HI) collision data collected in Run 2 during 2015–2018 at the Large Hadron Collider. It is primarily evaluated using events containing a pair of muons from the decay of Z bosons to cover the intermediate momentum range between 26 GeV and 100 GeV. Overall, the efficiency of the single-muon triggers is about 68% in the barrel region and 85% in the endcap region. The p T range for efficiency determination is extended by using muons from decays of J ψ mesons, W bosons, and top quarks. The performance in HI collision data is measured and shows good agreement with the results obtained in pp collisions. The muon trigger shows uniform and stable performance in good agreement with the prediction of a detailed simulation. Dedicated multi-muon triggers with kinematic selections provide the backbone to beauty, quarkonia, and low-mass physics studies. The design, evolution and performance of these triggers are discussed in detail.

On the continuity of solutions to anisotropic elliptic operators in the limiting case

Abstract We show that local weak solutions to anisotropic elliptic equations with bounded and measurable coefficients, whose prototype is are continuous. Our analysis exploits a particular intrinsic geometry that, within the limiting case on the exponents, allows for a reduction of the oscillation of the solution.

Measurement of the transverse momentum distribution of Drell–Yan lepton pairs in proton–proton collisions at √s=13 TeV with the ATLAS detector

This paper describes precision measurements of the transverse momentum $p_\mathrm {T}^{\ell \ell }$ ($\ell =e,\mu $) and of the angular variable $\phi ^{*}_{\eta }$ distributions of Drell–Yan lepton pairs in a mass range of 66–116 GeV. The analysis uses data from 36.1 fb$^{-1}$ of proton–proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of $\sqrt{s}=13\,$TeV collected by the ATLAS experiment at the LHC in 2015 and 2016. Measurements in electron-pair and muon-pair final states are performed in the same fiducial volumes, corrected for detector effects, and combined. Compared to previous measurements in proton–proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}=7$ and $8\,$TeV, these new measurements probe perturbative QCD at a higher centre-of-mass energy with a different composition of initial states. They reach a precision of 0.2$\%$ for the normalized spectra at low values of $p_\mathrm {T}^{\ell \ell }$. The data are compared with different QCD predictions, where it is found that predictions based on resummation approaches can describe the full spectrum within uncertainties.

Measurement of the CP-violating phase ϕ s in B$_s^0$→J/ψϕ decays in ATLAS at 13 TeV

A measurement of the B$_s^0$→J/ψϕ decay parameters using 80.5 fb -1 of integrated luminosity collected with the ATLAS detector from 13 Te proton–proton collisions at the LHC is presented. The measured parameters include the CP-violating phase ϕ s , the width difference Δ Γ s between the B$_s^0$ meson mass eigenstates and the average decay width Γ s . The values measured for the physical parameters are combined with those from 19.2fb -1 of 7 and 8 Te data, leading to the following: ϕs=-0.087±0.036(stat.)±0.021(syst.)rad ΔΓ s =0.0657±0.0043(stat.)±0.0037(syst.)ps -1 Γ s =0.6703±0.0014(stat.)±0.0018(syst.)ps -1 Results for ϕ s and Δ Γ s are also presented as 68% confidence level contours in the ϕ s –Δ Γ s plane. Furthermore the transversity amplitudes and corresponding strong phases are measured. ϕ s and Δ Γ s measurements are in agreement with the Standard Model predictions.
