Circular carrier-frequency photography for observing phase objects.

A circular grating is photographed through a phase object which deforms the image of the grating lines. By super-imposing these deformed lines with a master grating on photographic film, moire patterns are observed. These patterns are interpreted as fringes of constant radial derivative.

Comet exploration - Scientific objectives and mission strategy for a rendezvous with comet Encke.

A rendezvous mission which includes an extended stay of 80 days or longer in the vicinity of the comet is considered. Such a mission with exploration maneuvers through the coma and tail and circumnavigation of the nucleus is made feasible by the use of solar-electric propulsion. The physical characteristics of comet Encke are examined, giving attention to the icy conglomerate model of the nucleus, solar wind interaction, and chemical composition. Scientific objections are discussed together with mission profile options.

Cygnids and Taurids - Two classes of infrared objects.

In a study of the anonymous objects from the IRC Survey, we have found that about 10 percent have large long wave excesses. These infrared stars seem to belong to two classes, one group like NML Cygni (Cygnids) and the other like NML Tauri (Taurids).

The redshift-magnitude relation for quasi-stellar objects.

It is shown that the best-fitting slope of the redshift-magnitude relation for the most luminous quasi-stellar object in each redshift range is 4.3 plus or minus 0.4. However, the steepness of this slope is due primarily to the lowest redshift range including 3C 273, without which it is 2.1 plus or minus 0.6. The slopes of the second and third brightest QSOs are 3.1 plus or minus 0.6 and 3.2 plus or minus 0.6, respectively, markedly less than the slope of 5 which is expected for a Friedmann universe with q(0) = +1. Although the departure of the slope from 5 mag per decade is statistically significant at about 95% confidence, due to the heterogeneity and incompleteness of the sample there may be a systematic selectional bias not accounted for either in this analysis or in that of Bahcall and Hills. Consequently, no definite pronouncement can be made until a complete sample of adequate size is examined.

Classifying unresolved objects from simulated space data.

A multispectral scanner data set gathered at a flight altitude of 10,000 ft. over an agricultural area was modified to simulate the spatial resolution of the spacecraft scanners. Signatures were obtained for several major crops and their proportions were estimated over a large area. For each crop, a map was generated to show its approximate proportion in each resolution element, and hence its distribution over the area of interest. A statistical criterion was developed to identify data points that may not represent a mixture of the specified crops. This allows for great reduction in the effect of unknown or alien objects on the estimated proportions. This criterion can be used to locate special features, such as roads or farm houses. Preliminary analysis indicates a high level of consistency between estimated proportions and available ground truth. Large concentrations of major crops show up especially well on the maps.

Unmanned surface traverses of Mars and Moon: Science objectives, payloads, operations

Science objectives and properties to be measured are outlined for long surface traverse missions on Mars and the Moon, with remotely-controlled roving vehicles. A series of candidate rover payloads is proposed for each planet, varying in weight, cost, purpose, and development needed. The smallest weighs 35 kg; the largest almost 300 kg. A high degree of internal control will be needed on the Mars rover, including the ability to carry out complex science sequences. Decision-making by humans in the Mars mission includes supervisory control of rover operations and selection of features and samples of geological and biological interest. For the lunar mission, less control on the rover and more on earth is appropriate. Science portions of the rover mission profile are outlined, with timelines and mileage breakdowns. Operational problem areas for Mars include control, communications, data storage, night operations, and the mission operations system. For the moon, science data storage on the rover would be unnecessary and control much simpler.

An objective method and measuring equipment for noise control and acoustic diagnostics of motorcars

An objective method and apparatus for noise control and acoustic diagnostics of motorcar engines are reported. The method and apparatus let us know whether the noisiness of the vehicle under test exceeds the admissible threshold levels given by appropriate standards and if so what is the main source of the excessive noise. The method consists in measuring both the overall noise level and the sound pressure levels in definite frequency bands while the engine speed is controlled as well and may be fixed at prescribed values. Whenever the individually adjusted threshold level has been exceeded in any frequency band, a self-sustaining control signal is sent.

Synthesis of a system with active vibration isolation, considering the vibroacoustical characteristics of the source and of the isolated object

The efficiency and resistance of an active vibration isolation system (AVI) are analyzed for the case of unidirectional vibrations of a mass on a spring, with a damper, resting on a rigid base. The effect of certain vibroacoustical characteristics of real objects on AVI resistance and synthesis of AVI, which are effective over a wide frequency band are considered. A numerical analysis of the response of a mechanical system with AVI features is presented.

Report on objective ride quality evaluation

The correlation of absorbed power as an objective ride measure to the subjective evaluation for the bus data was investigated. For some individual bus rides the correlations were poor, but when a sufficient number of rides was used to give reasonable sample base, an excellent correlation was obtained. The following logarithmical function was derived: S = 1.7245 1n (39.6849 AP), where S = one subjective rating of the ride; and AP = the absorbed power in watts. A six-degree-of-freedom method developed for aircraft data was completed. Preliminary correlation of absorbed power with ISO standards further enhances the bus ride and absorbed power correlation numbers since the AP's obtained are of the same order of magnitude for both correlations. While it would then appear that one could just use ISO standards, there is no way to add the effect of three degrees of freedom. The absorbed power provides a method of adding the effects due to the three major directions plus the pitch and roll.

A double quasistellar object

It is reported that 1548+115a is also a QSO. Spectral information is provided for 1548+115b and 1548+115a, giving attention to the very different redshifts of the objects. The observations reported are believed to add support to noncosmological theories of redshifts. Such theories will receive additional support if an interaction between the two components of a close pair can be shown.

Extraction and classification of objects in multispectral images

Presented here is an algorithm that partitions a digitized multispectral image into parts that correspond to objects in the scene being sensed. The algorithm partitions an image into successively smaller rectangles and produces a partition that tends to minimize a criterion function. Supervised and unsupervised classification techniques can be applied to partitioned images. This partition-then-classify approach is used to process images sensed from aircraft and the ERTS-1 satellite, and the method is shown to give relatively accurate results in classifying agricultural areas and extracting urban areas.

Method of fabricating an object with a thin wall having a precisely shaped slit

A method is described for making a structure with a cavity and a thin wall with a precisely shaped slit. An object with a cavity having two openings, one of which is to be closed by a thin wall with a slit, is placed on the surface of a fixture. The fixture surface has a slot conforming to the size and shape of the slit to be formed in the thin wall.

Estimating proportions of objects from multispectral scanner data

Progress is reported in developing and testing methods of estimating, from multispectral scanner data, proportions of target classes in a scene when there are a significiant number of boundary pixels. Procedures were developed to exploit: (1) prior information concerning the number of object classes normally occurring in a pixel, and (2) spectral information extracted from signals of adjoining pixels. Two algorithms, LIMMIX and nine-point mixtures, are described along with supporting processing techniques. An important by-product of the procedures, in contrast to the previous method, is that they are often appropriate when the number of spectral bands is small. Preliminary tests on LANDSAT data sets, where target classes were (1) lakes and ponds, and (2) agricultural crops were encouraging.

Minor planets and related objects. XVI - Polarimetric diameters

Polarimetric observations of 43 asteroids are presented. All objects show a well-developed negative polarization branch as an indicator of unconsolidated surface regoliths. The empirical slope-albedo law for diffusely reflecting solid surfaces is reexamined and used to compute polarimetric albedos and diameters for 30 asteroids. In many cases the results are in good agreement with infrared-radiometric diameters; the older visual diameter measurements were systematically too small. Radiometric albedos below 5%, however, are not confirmed by the polarimetry. Bimodal frequency distributions are noted for asteroid color, albedo, and the depth of the negative polarization branch. Correlations between B - V color and polarimetric parameters suggest that most of the asteroid population can be divided into silicaceous and carbonaceous opacity classes.

Predicting the probability that earth-orbiting spacecraft will collide with man-made objects in space

A probabilistic approach to the problem of collisions is made possible by basing a model of the relevant characteristics of the total population on the known properties of a fraction of the total. A method of determining collision probability for objects in any two different but potentially intersecting orbits is derived. Collision probabilities for earth-orbital missions are investigated parametrically as a function of orbital characteristics and a hypothetical projection of the results to future orbital missions is discussed.

Short forms of the Texas Social Behavior Inventory /TSBI/, an objective measure of self-esteem

Two short (16 item) forms of the Helmreich, Stapp, and Ervin (1974) Texas Social Behavior Inventory, a validated, objective measure of self-esteem or social competence are presented. Normative data and other statistics are described for males and females. Correlations between each short form and long (32-item) scale were .97. Factor analysis and part-whole correlations verified the similarity of the two forms. The utility of the scale in research is described.
