Growth and characterization of homoepitaxial β-Ga 2 O 3 layers

ß-Ga 2 O 3 is a next-generation ultra-wide bandgap semiconductor (E g = 4.8 eV to 4.9 eV) that can be homoepitaxially grown on commercial substrates, enabling next-generation power electronic devices among other important applications. Analyzing the quality of deposited homoepitaxial layers used in such devices is challenging, in part due to the large probing depth in traditional x-ray diffraction (XRD) and also due to the surface-sensitive nature of atomic force microscopy (AFM). Here, a combination of evanescent grazing-incidence skew asymmetric XRD and AFM are investigated as an approach to effectively characterize the quality of homoepitaxial ß-Ga 2 O 3 layers grown by molecular beam epitaxy at a variety of Ga/O flux ratios. Accounting for both structure and morphology, optimal films are achieved at a Ga/O ratio of ~1.15, a conclusion that would not be possible to achieve by either XRD or AFM methods alone. Finally, fabricated Schottky barrier diodes with thicker homoepitaxial layers are characterized by J-V and C-V measurements, revealing an unintentional doping density of 4.3×10 16 cm -3 - 2×10 17 cm -3 in the epilayer. These results demonstrate the importance of complementary measurement methods for improving the quality of the ß-Ga 2 O 3 homoepitaxial layers used in power electronic and other devices.

2D photofragmentation LIF imaging of H 2 O 2 and HO 2 in the effluent of an atmospheric-pressure plasma jet: effects of solid and liquid interfaces

Two-dimensional (2D) absolute measurements of hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ) and approximations of the hydroperoxyl radical (HO 2 ) in the effluent of a COST Reference Microplasma Jet operated with a He/H 2 O feed gas are presented. Gas-phase densities are mapped using photofragmentation laser-induced fluorescence (PF-LIF) under three boundary conditions: open effluent, a solid target, and a liquid target. A novel method is presented for separating PF-LIF signals from H 2 O 2 and HO 2 using comparative measurements in oxygen-rich and oxygen-free environments to exploit the preferential formation of HO 2 in the presence of molecular oxygen. This separation strategy is supported by results from a plug-flow plasma chemistry model. Measured densities agree closely with model predictions in both magnitude and trend, while the 2D experimental distributions provide additional insight into the spatial dependencies of these species. In particular, the results show distinct differences in species transport depending on the target type: solid surfaces induce lateral deflection and reduced centerline densities, whereas liquid interfaces promote axial accumulation and higher near-axis concentrations.

Magnetic properties of the Ising-like rare earth pyrosilicate: D-Er 2 Si 2 O 7

Ising-like spin-1/2 magnetic materials are of interest for their ready connection to theory, particularly in the context of quantum critical behavior. In this work we report detailed studies of the magnetic properties of a member of the rare earth pyrosilicate family, D-Er 2 Si 2 O 7 , which is known to display a highly anisotropic Ising-like g-tensor and effective spin-1/2 magnetic moments. We used powder neutron diffraction, powder inelastic neutron spectroscopy (INS), and single crystal AC susceptibility to characterize its magnetic properties. Neutron diffraction enabled us to determine the magnetic structure below the known transition temperature (T N = 1.9 K) in zero field, confirming that the magnetic state is a four-sublattice antiferromagnetic structure with two non-collinear Ising axes, as was previously hypothesized. Our powder INS data revealed a gapped excitation at zero field, consistent with anisotropic (possibly Ising) exchange. An applied field of 1 T produces a mode softening, which is consistent with a field-induced second order phase transition. To assess the relevance of D-Er 2 Si 2 O 7 to the transverse field Ising model, we performed AC susceptibility measurements on a single crystal with the magnetic field oriented in the direction transverse to the Ising axes. This revealed a transition at 2.65 T at 0.1 K, a field significantly higher than the mode-softening field observed by powder INS, showing that the field-induced phase transitions are highly field-direction dependent as expected. Furthermore, these measurements suggest that D-Er 2 Si 2 O 7 may be a candidate for further exploration related to the transverse field Ising model.

Highly dispersed Co deposited on Al 2 O 3 particles via CoCp 2 + H 2 ALD

Highly dispersed cobalt atoms were deposited on porous alumina particles using atomic layer deposition (ALD) with a CoCp 2 /H 2 chemistry at approximately 7 wt%. H 2 did not completely reduce the cyclopentadienyl organic ligands bound to deposited Co atoms at ALD reaction conditions. A sharp decline in Co deposited per cycle for two or more ALD cycles indicates that much of the Al 2 O 3 surface is sterically blocked from further CoCp 2 deposition after the first CoCp 2 exposure. Temperature programmed reduction confirmed that the adsorbed precursor organic ligands persist after H 2 exposures during ALD and temperatures as high as 500 °C are required to fully reduce the organic ligands to CH 4 . High resolution, element sensitive imaging showed that Co atoms were dispersed on the Al 2 O 3 surface and could deposit in previously unobserved multiple growth morphologies, specifically layers that were continuous over several angstroms or discrete nanoparticles. Density functional theory calculations were used to examine Co atom adsorption, show the altered haptic binding of cracked Cp ligands, and to calculate the thermodynamics of Cp ligand decomposition. The lateral steric hindrance between organic ligands bound to deposited Co atoms, Cp ligand decomposition mechanism, and local Al 2 O 3 surface termination all likely determine the observed Co growth morphology during initial ALD cycles.

Enhancing ZnO nanowire gas sensors using Au/Fe 2 O 3 hybrid nanoparticle decoration

Heterojunctions are an important strategy for designing high performance electrical sensor materials and related devices. Herein, a new type of metal-semiconductor hybrid nanoparticle has been successfully used to remarkably sensitize the surface of ZnO nanowires for detecting NO 2 with high responses over a broad temperature window ranging from room temperature to 600 °C. These hybrid nanoparticles are comprised of iron oxide nanowires with well dispersed single crystalline Au nanoparticles. The hybrid nanoparticle decorated ZnO nanowires have achieved a giant response, as high as 74 500 toward NO 2 gas, about 42 times that of Au decorated ZnO nanowire sensors. This dramatic enhancement may be attributed to the efficient charge transfer across the Au–Fe 2 O 3 Schottky and Fe 2 O 3 –ZnO semiconductor heterojunction interfaces. Due to the incorporation of thermally-stable Fe 2 O 3 nanoparticles as the support of Au nanoparticles, the working temperature of nanowire sensors was successfully extended to higher temperatures, with an increase of 200 °C, from 400 °C to 600 °C. Such a combination of semiconductor heterojunction and semiconductor-metal Schottky contact presents a new strategy for designing high performance electrical sensors with high sensitivity, stability, selectivity, and wide operation temperature window, which are potentially suitable for advanced energy systems such as automotive engines and power plants.

First demonstration of robust tri-gate β-Ga 2 O 3 nano-membrane field-effect transistors

Nano-membrane tri-gate β-gallium oxide (β-Ga 2 O 3 ) field-effect transistors (FETs) on SiO 2 /Si substrate fabricated via exfoliation have been demonstrated for the first time. By employing electron beam lithography, the minimum-sized features can be defined with the footprint channel width of 50 nm. For high-quality interface between β-Ga 2 O 3 and gate dielectric, atomic layer-deposited 15 nm thick aluminum oxide (Al 2 O 3 ) was utilized with tri-methyl-aluminum (TMA) self-cleaning surface treatment. The fabricated devices demonstrate extremely low subthreshold slope (SS) of 61 mV dec –1 , high drain current (I DS ) ON/OFF ratio of 1.5 × 10 9 , and negligible transfer characteristic hysteresis. Furthermore, we also experimentally demonstrated robustness of these devices with current–voltage (I–V) characteristics measured at temperatures up to 400 °C.

Long-term trends of impacts of global gasoline and diesel emissions on ambient PM 2.5 and O 3 pollution and the related health burden for 2000–2015

Global economic development and urbanization during the past two decades have driven the increases in demand of personal and commercial vehicle fleets, especially in developing countries, which has likely resulted in changes in year-to-year vehicle tailpipe emissions associated with aerosols and trace gases. However, long-term trends of impacts of global gasoline and diesel emissions on air quality and human health are not clear. In this study, we employ the Community Earth System Model in conjunction with the newly developed Community Emissions Data System as anthropogenic emission inventory to quantify the long-term trends of impacts of global gasoline and diesel emissions on ambient air quality and human health for the period of 2000–2015. Global gasoline and diesel emissions contributed to regional increases in annual mean surface PM 2.5 (particulate matter with aerodynamic diameters ≤2.5 μm) concentrations by up to 17.5 and 13.7 µg m –3 , and surface ozone (O 3 ) concentrations by up to 7.1 and 7.2 ppbv, respectively, for 2000–2015. However, we also found substantial declines of surface PM 2.5 and O 3 concentrations over Europe, the US, Canada, and China for the same period, which suggested the co-benefits of air quality and human health from improving gasoline and diesel fuel quality and tightening vehicle emissions standards. Globally, we estimate the mean annual total PM 2.5- and O 3 -induced premature deaths are 139 700–170 700 for gasoline and 205 200–309 300 for diesel, with the corresponding years of life lost of 2.74–3.47 and 4.56–6.52 million years, respectively. Diesel and gasoline emissions create health-effect disparities between the developed and developing countries, which are likely to aggravate afterwards.

O-GlcNAc transferase Ogt regulates embryonic neuronal development through modulating Wnt/β-catenin signaling

Abstract Ogt-mediated O-GlcNAcylation is enriched in the nervous system and involves in neuronal development, brain function and neurological diseases. However, the roles of Ogt and O-GlcNAcylation in embryonic neurogenesis have remained largely unknown. Here, we show that Ogt is highly expressed in embryonic brain, and Ogt depletion reduces the proliferation of embryonic neural stem cells and migration of new born neurons. Ogt depletion in cultured hippocampal neurons impairs neuronal maturation, including reduced dendritic numbers and length, and immature development of spines. Mechanistically, Ogt depletion decreases the activity of Wnt/β-catenin signaling. Ectopic β-catenin rescues neuronal developmental deficits caused by Ogt depletion. Ogt also regulates human cortical neurogenesis in forebrain organoids derived from induced pluripotent stem cells. Our findings reveal the essential roles and mechanisms of Ogt-mediated O-GlcNAc modification in regulating mammalian neuronal development.

Disorder-induced spin excitation continuum and spin-glass ground state in the inverse spinel CuGa 2 O 4

Spinel-structured compounds serve as prototypical examples of highly frustrated systems and are promising candidates for realizing the long-sought quantum spin liquid (QSL) state. However, structural disorder is inevitable in many real QSL candidates and its impact remains a topic of intense debate. In this work, we conduct comprehensive investigations on CuGa 2 ⁢ O 4 , a spinel compound with significant structural disorder, focusing on its thermodynamic properties and spectroscopic behaviors. No long-range magnetic order is observed down to ∼80 mK, as evidenced by magnetic susceptibility, specific-heat, and elastic neutron scattering measurements. More intriguingly, inelastic neutron scattering experiments reveal a broad gapless continuum of magnetic excitations around the Brillouin zone boundary, resembling the magnetic excitation spectra expected for a QSL. Nevertheless, a spin-freezing transition at 𝑇 f ≈ 0.88 K is identified from the cusp in the dc susceptibility curves, where a bifurcation between zero-field-cooling and field-cooling curves occurs. Furthermore, ac susceptibility measurements show a peak close to 𝑇 f at low frequency, which shifts to higher temperature with increasing frequency. These results show that CuGa 2 ⁢ O 4 has a spin-glass ground state, consistent with the establishment of short-range order inferred from the specific-heat measurements. Collectively, these results illustrate the crucial role of disorder in defining the excitation spectrum out of the disordered ground state. Furthermore, our findings shed light onto the broader class of 𝐴⁢𝐵 2 ⁢O 4 spinels and advance our understanding of the spin dynamics in magnetically disordered systems.

Critical structural parameter determining magnetic phases in the F⁡e 2 ⁢M⁢o 3 ⁢O 8 altermagnet system

A systematic structural investigation of F⁡e 2 ⁢M⁢o 3⁢ O 8 as a function of pressure, temperature, and magnetic field reveals that the 𝑃⁢6 3 ⁢𝑚⁢𝑐 space group remains robust over a wide range of conditions. No changes in the long-range crystal structure are observed for pressures up to 10 GPa, temperatures between 11 K and 300 K, and magnetic fields up to 9 T. The magnetostructural response, quantified by Δ⁢𝑐/𝑐, is determined for magnetic fields applied transverse to the crystallographic 𝑐 axis, demonstrating strong magnetoelastic coupling. The well-known magnetic-field-induced transition is confirmed to be first order and isostructural, occurring between two distinct altermagnetic states. Importantly, this transition can also be accessed using magnetic fields applied within the 𝑎𝑏 plane. When expressed in terms of the 𝑐/𝑎 ratio, the structural evolution under pressure (0–10 GPa) maps continuously onto that observed across the full Zn substitution range in (F⁡e 1−𝑦⁢ Z⁢n 𝑦 )2 M⁢o 3 ⁢O 8 ⁢(0 ≤ 𝑦 ≤ 1), indicating a common underlying structural control parameter. Furthermore, these results demonstrate that the 𝑐-axis lattice parameter is the primary structural degree of freedom governing magnetic behavior under external tuning parameters. More broadly, they indicate that magnetic order in this family of complex oxides (𝐴 2 ⁢M⁢o 3 ⁢O 8 , 𝐴 = Co,Mn,Ni) can be systematically tuned via pressure. This tunability highlights these materials as promising platforms for controllable magnetic switching, particularly in thin films integrated with piezoelectric substrates.

Structural transition and possible pressure-induced superconductivity in a suboxide La 5 Pb 3 O

Here, in this study, we report a structural phase transition and its interplay with superconductivity in the suboxide La 5⁢ Pb 3 ⁢O. Upon cooling through 𝑇 𝑡 = 225K, La 5⁢ Pb 3⁢ O transforms from a high-temperature 𝐼⁢4/mcm to a low-temperature 𝑃⁢4/ncc structure in which La-Pb dimerization along the 𝑐 axis occurs. This transition is accompanied by anomalies in the temperature dependence of electrical resistivity and specific heat. High-pressure electrical transport measurements reveal that hydrostatic pressure suppresses the structural transition and possibly induces superconductivity with a maximum superconducting temperature of 10 K. Density functional theory calculations show minimal changes in the electronic density of states and no gap opening at 𝐸 𝐹 across 𝑇 𝑡 , suggesting that the transition is driven by bonding effects rather than Fermi surface instability. These findings establish La 5⁢ Pb 3 ⁢O as a promising platform for exploring the interplay between weak structural transitions and superconductivity.

Modeling the sequential dissociative double ionization of O 2 by ultrashort intense infrared laser pulses

A density matrix approach for sequential double ionization (DM-SDI) of molecules has been developed recently and was applied to the N 2 molecule. In this article, we extended the DM-SDI model to O 2 , which is a more complicated system to model than N 2 , due to its electronic structures and spin-orbit and laser couplings in the manifold of doubly charged states. We obtained a good agreement on the kinetic energy release spectrum of O + + O + from previous experiments. Thanks to the low computational cost of the model, we explored the mechanism behind the ionization and dissociation dynamics as well as the effects of lasers on the spectrum. Furthermore, this work will pave the way to model sequential dissociative double ionization of larger molecules and to probe molecular dynamics by measuring kinetic energy release spectra from this process.

Anisotropic magnetoresistance and nontrivial spin Hall magnetoresistance in Pt / α – F e 2 O 3 bilayers

Magnetic proximity effect has only been conclusively observed in ferromagnet-based systems. We report the observation of anomalous Hall effect and angular-dependent anisotropic magnetoresistance in Pt on antiferromagnetic Pt / α – F e 2 O 3 (0001) epitaxial films at 10 K, which provide evidence for the magnetic proximity effect. The Neel order of Pt / α – F e 2 O 3 and the induced magnetization in Pt show a unique angular-dependent magnetoresistance compared with all other ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic systems. In conclusion, a macrospin response model is established and can explain the antiferromagnetic spin configuration and all main magnetoresistance features in the Pt / α – F e 2 O 3 bilayers.

Spin and orbital excitations through the metal-to-insulator transition in Cd 2 Os 2 O 7 probed with high-resolution resonant inelastic x-ray scattering

Here, high-resolution resonant inelastic x-ray scattering measurements (ΔE=46meV) have been performed on Cd 2 Os 2 O 7 through the metal-to-insulator transition (MIT). A magnetic excitation at 125 meV evolves continuously through the MIT, in agreement with recent Raman-scattering results, and provides further confirmation for an all-in all-out magnetic ground state. Asymmetry of this feature is likely a result of coupling between the electronic and the magnetic degrees of freedom. We also observe a broad continuum of interband excitations centered at 0.3 eV energy loss. This is indicative of significant hybridization between Os 5d and O 2p states and the concurrent itinerant nature of the system. In turn, this suggests a possible breakdown of the free-ion model for Cd 2 Os 2 O 7 .

Partial antiferromagnetic helical order in single-crystal Fe 3 PO 4 O 3

Magnetic frustration in Fe 3 PO 4 O 3 produces an unusual magnetic state below T N =163 K, where incommensurate antiferromagnetic order is restricted to nanosized needle-like domains, as inferred from neutron powder diffraction. In this paper, we show using single-crystal neutron diffraction that Fe 3 PO 4 O 3 does not exhibit a preferred ordering wave vector direction in the ab plane despite having a well-defined ordering wave vector length. This results in the observation of continuous rings of scattering rather than satellite Bragg peaks. The lack of a preferred incommensurate ordering wave vector direction can be understood in terms of an antiferromagnetic Heisenberg model with nearest-neighbor (J 1 ) and second-neighbor (J 2 ) interactions, which produce a quasidegenerate manifold of ordering wave vectors. This state appears to be similar to the partially ordered phase of MnSi, but in Fe 3 PO 4 O 3 arises in a frustrated antiferromagnet rather than a chiral ferromagnet.

Metal-insulator transition in V 2 O 3 with intrinsic defects

Vanadium sesquioxide (V 2 O 3 ) is a Mott insulator exhibiting a temperature-dependent metal-insulator transition (MIT) at 165 K accompanied by both a magnetic and structural transition. Although it is expected to be a metal under conventional band theory, electron interactions at low temperature cause it to behave like an insulator, making it difficult to accurately model its electronic properties with standard ab initio methods. As such, accurate theoretical assessments of the MIT with point defects requires special attention to the type of functionals used. In this study, we conclude that the PBE + U functional provides the best compromise between accuracy and efficiency in calculating the properties related to the MIT between low-temperature and high-temperature V 2 O 3 . We use this functional to explore the various influences that intrinsic point defects will have on the MIT in V 2 O 3 .

Low-energy magneto-optics of Tb 2 Ti 2 O 7 in a [111] magnetic field

The pyrochlore magnet Tb 2 Ti 2 O 7 shows a lack of magnetic order to low temperatures and is considered to be a quantum spin liquid candidate. Here we perform time-domain THz spectroscopy on high-quality Tb 2 Ti 2 O 7 crystals and study the low-energy excitations as a function of [111] magnetic field with high energy resolution. The low-energy crystal-field excitations change their energies anomalously under magnetic field. Despite several sharp field-dependent changes, we show that the material's spectrum can be described not by phase transitions but by field-dependent hybridization between the low-energy crystal-field levels. We highlight the strong coupling between spin and lattice degrees of freedom in Tb 2 Ti 2 O 7 as evidenced by the magnetic-field tunable crystal-field environment. Calculations based on single ion physics with field-induced symmetry reduction of the crystal-field environment can reproduce our data.
