An engineering analysis of a closed cycle plant growth module

The SOLGEM model is a numerical engineering model which solves the flow and energy balance equations for the air flowing through a growing environment, assuming quasi-steady state conditions within the system. SOLGEM provides a dynamic simulation of the controlled environment system in that the temperature and flow conditions of the growing environment are estimated on an hourly basis in response to the weather data and the plant growth parameters. The flow energy balance considers the incident solar flux; incoming air temperature, humidity, and flow rate; heat exchange with the roof and floor; and heat and moisture exchange with the plants. A plant transpiration subroutine was developed based plant growth research facility, intended for the study of bioregenerative life support theories. The results of a performance analysis of the plant growth module are given. The estimated energy requirements of the module components and the total energy are given.

Static internal performance of a single-engine onaxisymmetric-nozzle vaned-thrust-reverser design with thrust modulation capabilities

An investigation has been conducted at wind-off conditions in the stati-test facility of the Langley 16-Foot Transonic Tunnel. The tests were conducted on a single-engine reverser configuration with partial and full reverse-thrust modulation capabilities. The reverser design had four ports with equal areas. These ports were angled outboard 30 deg from the vertical impart of a splay angle to the reverse exhaust flow. This splaying of reverser flow was intended to prevent impingement of exhaust flow on empennage surfaces and to help avoid inlet reingestion of exhaust gas when the reverser is integrated into an actual airplane configuration. External vane boxes were located directly over each of the four ports to provide variation of reverser efflux angle from 140 deg to 26 deg (measured forward from the horizontal reference axis). The reverser model was tested with both a butterfly-type inner door and an internal slider door to provide area control for each individual port. In addition, main nozzle throat area and vector angle were varied to examine various methods of modulating thrust levels. Other model variables included vane box configuration (four or six vanes per box), orientation of external vane boxes with respect to internal port walls (splay angle shims), and vane box sideplates. Nozzle pressure ratio was varied from 2.0 approximately 7.0.

Optical-data-processing properties of a liquid-crystal television spatial light modulator

The potential of an extremely inexpensive liquid-crystal television (LCTV) as a two-dimensional spatial light modulator has been investigated. The LCTV modulates the transmission of coherent or incoherent light and can either be electronically addressed through a microcomputer or optically addressed with a TV camera. The transmission characteristics of the device have been measured, its diffraction pattern is examined, and its use as an input device for an optical correlator is tested. It is discovered that, with proper modifications, it has potential for optical-data-processing applications.

Average power constraints in AlGaAs semiconductor lasers under pulse-position-modulation conditions

In some optical communications systems there are advantages to using low duty-cycle pulsed modulation formats such as pulse-position-modulation. However, because of intrinsic limitations of AlGaAs semiconductor lasers, the average power that they can deliver in a pulsed mode of operation is lower than in a CW mode. The magnitude of this problem and its implications are analyzed in this letter, and one possible solution is mentioned.

Measurements of ocean wave spectra and modulation transfer function with the airborne two-frequency scatterometer

The directional spectrum and the microwave modulation transfer function of ocean waves can be measured with the airborne two frequency scatterometer technique. Similar to tower based observations, the aircraft measurements of the Modulation Transfer Function (MTF) show that it is strongly affected by both wind speed and sea state. Also detected are small differences in the magnitudes of the MTF between downwind and upwind radar look directions, and variations with ocean wavenumber. The MTF inferred from the two frequency radar is larger than that measured using single frequency, wave orbital velocity techniques such as tower based radars or ROWS measurements from low altitude aircraft. Possible reasons for this are discussed. The ability to measure the ocean directional spectrum with the two frequency scatterometer, with supporting MTF data, is demonstrated.

Simulated performance of the NASA 30/20 GHz test transponder using multi-H phase coded modulation

The performance of a proposed NASA 30/20 GHz satellite communications system is studied for multi-h phase coded modulation (MHPM) schemes. The techniques used to model and simulate a satellite communications channel including transmitter, receiver, filters, nonlinearities, and interferers are presented. The performance of various MHPM schemes is compared for several different channel configurations. As a measure of performance, the probability of bit error vs Eb/NO is computed using a Monte Carlo simulation technique. It is found that, regardless of the channel configuration, MHPM schemes can provide power efficiency over serial minimum shift keying modulation.

Generation, modulation and reception of orthogonally polarized signals

The radiating electromagnetic field of a dipole antenna is considered. By allowing the dipole to rotate about its midpoint, one can construct an entire set of signal polarizations wherein distinct members of the set are mutually orthogonal. It is shown how these signals can be modulated and demodulated to convey information. These ideas are then generalized, and both balanced, as well as unbalanced quadrapole modulations are defined. Methods of receiver synchronization to such signals are described, as well as their potential application to multiple access and anti-jam communications.

Tunable diode laser Stark modulation spectroscopy for rotational assignment of the HNO3 7.5-micron band

The technique of Stark modulation spectroscopy for unraveling and assigning rotationally resolved dense molecular spectra has been employed using a tunable diode laser (TDL) source. Doppler-limited absorption and Stark modulation spectra of the HNO3 7.5-micron band near the 1326/cm band origin are presented with preliminary values of the excited-state rovibrational constants derived from both TDL and Bomem Fourier transform IR spectra.

Heliocentric radius of the cosmic ray modulation boundary

A semiempirical analysis is made of an extensive body of observed cosmic ray intensity data from Pioneers 10 and 11, and related spectral information from other authors, in order to infer the radius R of the modulation region surrounding the sun. During the period 1972-1985, the inferred values of R vary with time systematically and in a manner generally similar to that of sunspot numbers. The range of values of R is from 42 AU at the time of minimum solar activity (circa 1976) to 88 AU about 1.5 yr following the time of maximum solar activity (circa 1980). A specific, testable prediction is that Pioneer 10 will reach the modulation boundary in 1988, and will remain in its vicinity for several years thereafter.

Trellis-Coded Modulation for Fading Channels

In proposed communication system, digital signals transmitted efficiently over fading channel by combination of trellis coding and multiple-phase-shift keying with addition of asymmetry to signal set. Coding and modulation schemes not designed separately as in previous systems but integrated to yield bandwidth-efficient modulation and forward-error-correction coding. Helps to satisfy need for reliable high-quality transmission of voice and data between land-mobile units via satellites, where limitations of power and bandwidth imposed simultaneously. Also applicable to ionospheric communications between fixed or mobile units.

Loss-compensation of intensity-modulating fiber-optic sensors

This report describes a new type of intensity-modulating fiber-optic sensor which has high immunity to the effects of variations in the losses of the fiber-link. A variable-splitting-ratio transducer is used to differentially modulate the intensities of the light which it transmits and reflects. Using a four-fiber optical link, light is impinged onto the transducer from either direction, and, in each case, the transmitted and reflected signals are measured. These four signals are then processed to remove the effects of the fiber and connector losses. Loss-compensated sensors of angular position and displacement are described, and their outputs are shown to be highly stable despite considerable variations in the transmissivities of the fiber-link components.

Multiple Trellis Coded Modulation (MTCM): An MSAT-X report

Conventional trellis coding outputs one channel symbol per trellis branch. The notion of multiple trellis coding is introduced wherein more than one channel symbol per trellis branch is transmitted. It is shown that the combination of multiple trellis coding with M-ary modulation yields a performance gain with symmetric signal set comparable to that previously achieved only with signal constellation asymmetry. The advantage of multiple trellis coding over the conventional trellis coded asymmetric modulation technique is that the potential for code catastrophe associated with the latter has been eliminated with no additional cost in complexity (as measured by the number of states in the trellis diagram).
