Pinhole diffraction filter

Multistage diffraction filter consisting of coalined series of pinholes on parallel sheets can be used as nondegradable UV filter. Beam is attenuated as each pinhole diffracts radiation in controlled manner into divergent beam, and following pinhole accepts only small part of that beam.

Signal enhancement filters

Designed to smooth digital output of radar tracking system, two filters prevent noise-induced inaccuracies and result in input/output noise-variance reduction on order of 10:1. One filter is special purpose device with limited arithmetic-logic unit, and other is true programmable microprocessor.

The 121.75 MHz band pass filter

Prior to the ASTP joint flight it was observed during various tests on the USA's VHF/FM system, that the 121.75 MHz receiver unsquelched when exposed to certain RF power levels at a frequency of 142.417 MHz. Tests were conducted in an effort to arrive at a solution. Several recommendations were made but the most feasible was to insert a selective band pass filter in the transmit/receiver line of the VHF/FM transceiver. The tests were performed on the filter to determine the frequency response and rejection capabilities at 142.417 MHz.

Kalman filter estimation of human pilot-model parameters

The parameters of a human pilot-model transfer function are estimated by applying the extended Kalman filter to the corresponding retarded differential-difference equations in the time domain. Use of computer-generated data indicates that most of the parameters, including the implicit time delay, may be reasonably estimated in this way. When applied to two sets of experimental data obtained from a closed-loop tracking task performed by a human, the Kalman filter generated diverging residuals for one of the measurement types, apparently because of model assumption errors. Application of a modified adaptive technique was found to overcome the divergence and to produce reasonable estimates of most of the parameters.

Solid state electro-optic color filter and iris

Test results obtained have confirmed the practicality of the solid state electro-optic filters as an optical control element in a television system. Neutral-density control range in excess of 1000:1 has been obtained on sample filters. Test results, measurements in a complete camera system, discussions of problem areas, analytical comparisons, and recommendations for future investigations are included.

Development of an optimal automatic control law and filter algorithm for steep glideslope capture and glideslope tracking

A digital automatic control law to capture a steep glideslope and track the glideslope to a specified altitude is developed for the longitudinal/vertical dynamics of a CTOL aircraft using modern estimation and control techniques. The control law uses a constant gain Kalman filter to process guidance information from the microwave landing system, and acceleration from body mounted accelerometer data. The filter outputs navigation data and wind velocity estimates which are used in controlling the aircraft. Results from a digital simulation of the aircraft dynamics and the control law are presented for various wind conditions.

Performance of a finite phase state bit-synchronization loop with and without sequential filters

A discrete phase state bit-synchronization loop is proposed for synchronization and detection of a binary nonreturn-to-zero (NRZ) process. The general loop model is developed for 11 and 17 phase states with optional sequential loop filter. Loop performance is considered in terms of the phase error density function, rms phase error, and mean time to bit slippage. It is shown that satisfactory loop performance can be achieved at -3 dB SNR through use of sequential loop filters.

On least-squares design of recursive digital filters

Time-domain methods for the design of recursive digital filters using a squared error criterion are compared with a frequency-domain technique. Levy's method, which has been used to estimate transfer functions of continuous-time systems is modified to obtain design equations for digital filters. A special case of Levy's method is shown to be essentially equivalent to the time-domain methods.

On the design of recursive digital filters

A change of variables is described which transforms the problem of designing a recursive digital filter to that of approximation by a ratio of polynomials on a finite interval. Some analytic techniques for the design of low-pass filters are presented, illustrating the use of the transformation. Also considered are methods for the design of phase equalizers.

Application of a modified complementary filtering technique for increased aircraft control system frequency bandwidth in high vibration environment

A modified complementary filtering technique for estimating aircraft roll rate was developed and flown in a research helicopter to determine whether higher gains could be achieved. Use of this technique did, in fact, permit a substantial increase in system frequency bandwidth because, in comparison with first-order filtering, it reduced both noise amplification and control limit-cycle tendencies.

Three field tests of a gas filter correlation radiometer

Test flights to remotely measure nonurban carbon monoxide (CO) concentrations by gas filter correlation radiometry are discussed. The inferred CO concentrations obtained through use of the Gas Filter Correlation Radiometer (GFCR) agreed with independent measurements obtained by gas chromatography air sample bottle analysis to within 20 percent. The equipment flown on board the aircraft, the flight test procedure, the gas chromatograph direct air sampling procedure, and the GFCR data analysis procedure are reported.

Compatibility check of measured aircraft responses using kinematic equations and extended Kalman filter

An extended Kalman filter smoother and a fixed point smoother were used for estimation of the state variables in the six degree of freedom kinematic equations relating measured aircraft responses and for estimation of unknown constant bias and scale factor errors in measured data. The computing algorithm includes an analysis of residuals which can improve the filter performance and provide estimates of measurement noise characteristics for some aircraft output variables. The technique developed was demonstrated using simulated and real flight test data. Improved accuracy of measured data was obtained when the data were corrected for estimated bias errors.

ALTKAL: An optimum linear filter for GEOS-3 altimeter data

ALTKAL is a computer program designed to smooth sea surface height data obtained from the GEOS 3 altimeter, and to produce minimum variance estimates of sea surface height and sea surface slopes, along with their standard derivations. The program operates by processing the data through a Kalman filter in both the forward and backward directions, and optimally combining the results. The sea surface height signal is considered to have a geoid signal, modeled by a third order Gauss-Markov process, corrupted by additive white noise. The governing parameters for the signal and noise processes are the signal correlation length and the signal-to-noise ratio. Mathematical derivations of the filtering and smoothing algorithms are presented. The smoother characteristics are illustrated by giving the frequency response, the data weighting sequence and the transfer function of a realistic steady-state smoother example. Based on nominal estimates for geoidal undulation amplitude and correlation length, standard deviations for the estimated sea surface height and slope are 12 cm and 3 arc seconds, respectively.

Iterative design of one- and two-dimensional FIR digital filters

The paper describes a new iterative technique for designing FIR (finite duration impulse response) digital filters using a frequency weighted least squares approximation. The technique is as easy to implement (via FFT) and as effective in two dimensions as in one dimension, and there are virtually no limitations on the class of filter frequency spectra approximated. An adaptive adjustment of the frequency weight to achieve other types of design approximation such as Chebyshev type design is discussed.

Recent advances in birefringent filters

In the past several years, important developments have been made in the construction and theory of birefringent filters. Tunable filters that operate from 4500 to 7000 A with full widths at half maximum of 0.05 A and maximum transmissions of almost 20 percent have been constructed. Inexpensive large-aperture (at least 15 cm) achromatic waveplates have been fabricated which allow full use of resolution-solid angle products that are 100 times that of Fabry-Perots and 10,000 times that of grating systems.

The effect of bandwidth on filter instrument total ozone accuracy

The effect of the width and shape of the New Zealand filter instrument's passbands on measured total-ozone accuracy is determined using a numerical model of the spectral measurement process. The model enables the calculation of corrections for the 'bandwidth-effect' error and shows that highly attenuating passband skirts and well-suppressed leakage bands are at least as important as narrow half-bandwidths. Over typical ranges of airmass and total ozone, the range in the bandwidth-effect correction is about 2% in total ozone for the filter instrument, compared with about 1% for the Dobson instrument.
