Reconfigurable Pinwheel Artificial-Spin-Ice and Superconductor Hybrid Device

The ability to control the potential landscape in a medium of interacting particles could lead to intriguing collective behavior and innovative functionalities. In this work, we utilize spatially reconfigurable magnetic potentials of a pinwheel artificial-spin-ice (ASI) structure to tailor the motion of superconducting vortices. The reconstituted chain structures of the magnetic charges in the pinwheel ASI and the strong interaction between magnetic charges and superconducting vortices allow significant modification of the transport properties of the underlying superconducting thin film, resulting in a reprogrammable resistance state that enables a reversible and switchable vortex Hall effect. Our results highlight an effective and simple method of using ASI as an in situ reconfigurable nanoscale energy landscape to design reprogrammable superconducting electronics, which could also be applied to the in situ control of properties and functionalities in other magnetic particle systems, such as magnetic skyrmions.

Selective-Area Remote Epitaxy of ZnO Microrods Using Multilayer–Monolayer-Patterned Graphene for Transferable and Flexible Device Fabrications

Here, selective-area remote epitaxy (SA-REpi) is demonstrated for fabricating mechanically releasable position-controlled ZnO microrod (MR) arrays from donor wafers in an arrayed form. Intaglio-patterned graphene, consisting of basal single-layer graphene (SLG) overlayered with multilayer graphene (MLG) patterned with perforated holes, is transferred onto a GaN/Al 2 O 3 wafer on which the hydrothermal synthesis is performed for growing ZnO MRs. The basal SLG area exposed through the MLG pattern yields ZnO MRs, whereas the MLG plateau inhibits the growth. The noncovalent remote epitaxial heterointerface enables the release of the MR overlayer in the arrayed form, and the original source wafer is refurbished for reproducibly repeating the SA-REpi. Density-functional theory calculations suggest that localized surface charge density is induced on the surface of SLG by the underlying GaN across ultrathin SLG, which possibly provides a driving force for precursor adatoms and the following remote epitaxy of ZnO. In contrast, the induction of the charge density redistribution does not clearly occur through MLG; so, that keeps the surface of MLG nearly charge-neutral. The diameter and spacing of ZnO MRs are controlled in a designed way by changing the pattern geometries. High-resolution scanning transmission electron microscopy reveals the remote heteroepitaxial relationship at an atomic level. The remote epitaxy is expected to provide an ideal platform to transfer the addressable spatial arrays of nano- or micro-architecture semiconductor components to arbitrary target surfaces directly after the growth without the assembly procedures.

Oxygenates production in a microfluidic dielectric barrier discharge device sustained in Ar/CH 4 /O 2

Reforming of methane (CH 4 ) is a process to produce syngas (CO/H 2 ) and other value-added chemicals including oxygenates such as methanol (CH 3 OH). Atmospheric pressure plasmas have the potential to be more energy efficient than traditional reforming methods as value-added chemicals can be synthesized directly in the plasma without requiring an additional step. In this paper, we discuss the results from a computational investigation of the formation of oxygenates by CH 4 oxidation in the presence of Ar, including CH 3 OH and CH 2 O, in a nanosecond pulsed dielectric barrier discharge. The plasma is formed in a microfluidic channel whose small dimensions are ideal for plasma formation at atmospheric pressure. The production and consumption mechanisms of dominant radicals and long-lived species are discussed in detail for the base case conditions of Ar/CH 4 /O 2 = 50/25/25. CH 3 OH is produced primarily by CH 3 O reacting with CH 3 O and CH 3 O 2 reacting with OH, while CH 2 O formation relies on reactions involving CH 3 O and CH 3 . The most abundant oxygenate formed is CO (produced by H abstraction from CHO). However, the greenhouse gas CO 2 is also formed as a by-product. The effects of gas mixture are examined to maximize the CH 3 OH and CH 2 O densities while decreasing the CO 2 density. Increasing the Ar percentage from 0% to 95% decreased the CH 3 OH and CH 2 O densities. At low Ar percentages, this is due to an increase in consumption of CH 3 OH and CH 2 O, while at high Ar percentages (>40% Ar), the production of CH 3 OH and CH 2 O is decreased. However, both CO and CO 2 reached peak densities at 70%–90% Ar. Changing the CH 4 /O 2 ratio while keeping 50% Ar in the discharge led to increased CH 3 OH and CH 2 O production, reaching peak densities at 35%–40% CH 4 . The CO and CO 2 densities decreased beyond 20% CH 4 , indicating that a CH 4 rich discharge is ideal for forming the desired oxygenates.

Skipper Charge-Coupled Device for Low-Energy-Threshold Particle Experiments above Ground

Here we present experimental results using a single-electron resolution skipper CCD running above ground level to demonstrate the potential of this technology for its use in reactor neutrino observations and other low-energy particle-interaction experiments. Operating conditions and event-selection criteria are provided to decouple most of the background rate at low energies. The majority of this background comes from interactions in the inactive silicon surrounding the active detector volume that ends up in the readout register of the sensor. Our final results are compared with other low-threshold technologies showing a good control of the background for low ionization energies down to five electron-hole pairs. This demonstrates that the skipper CCD proves to be among the best options to measure low-energy and weakly interacting particles at ground level.

Direct microstability optimization of stellarator devices

Turbulent transport is regarded as one of the key issues in magnetic confinement nuclear fusion, both for tokamaks and stellarators. Here, in this work, we show that a significant decrease in a microstability-based proxy, as opposed to a geometric one, for the turbulent heat flux, namely the quasilinear heat flux, can be obtained in an efficient manner by coupling stellarator optimization with linear gyrokinetic simulations. This is accomplished by computing the quasilinear heat flux at each step of the optimization process, as well as the deviation from quasisymmetry, and minimizing their sum, leading to a balance between neoclassical and the turbulent transport proxy.

Review on Switching Device Fault, Protection, and Fault-Tolerant Topologies of Current Source Inverter

The fault modes, protection, and fault-tolerant topologies of voltage source inverters have been investigated for decades. However, issues and solutions related to the fault modes of current source inverters are less well understood. This paper summarizes some of the key topics relevant to a fault in current source inverters, including types of fault modes and their ramifications, post-fault protection methods, and fault- tolerant current source inverter topologies that have been presented in the literature.

Ultra-Fast Non-Volatile Resistive Switching Devices with Over 512 Distinct and Stable Levels for Memory and Neuromorphic Computing

Low-current multilevel programmability with inherent non-volatility and high stability of resistance states is required for both multi-bit memory storage and deep learning accelerators but is difficult to achieve. Here, in a resistive switching system, this work realizes >512 (>9 bits) distinct non-volatile conductance levels with stable retention for each state with current levels down to the nanoampere range, highly promising for potential integration with small processing nodes with ultra-low power consumption requirements. This is achieved by demonstrating a new thin film design concept that encompasses three key features: an ultra-thin epitaxial oxygen ionic switching layer that provides a tunable energy barrier at the bottom electrode, an overcoat amorphous layer that acts as an ion migration barrier for stable state retention, and a partial conductive filament as a localized electronic transport channel to the epitaxial switching layer. A large dynamic resistance range of up to seven orders of magnitude is achieved with reset-free transitions among intermediate states, and programmability is demonstrated with ultra-fast (20 ns) pulses. Artificial neural network (ANN) simulations, based on the experimental performance and its non-idealities, demonstrate close-to-ideal inference accuracies for various Modified National Institute of Standards and Technology (MNIST) data sets.
