Calculation of the flow on a blunted cone at high angle of attack

A new technique for calculating the entire flow-field on spherically blunted circular cones at high angles of attack and high Reynolds numbers is described. The calculations are based on a single-layer system of three-dimensional parabolic equations which are approximations to the full steady Navier-Stokes equations. Initial conditions at the sphere-cone tangency plane are provided by using an inviscid time-dependent solution added to a viscous nonsimilar boundary layer solution. Calculated results are compared with experimental heat transfer and pressure data for a 15 deg half-angle cone with a 1-in. spherical nose at 15 deg angle of attack. The free-stream Mach number is 10.6, and the free-stream Reynolds number is 1,200,000 per foot. Excellent agreement between the calculated and experimental data for both pressure and heat transfer is obtained.

Mission design for a halo orbiter of the earth

The International Sun-Earth Explorer (ISEE) scientific satellite to be stationed in 1978 in the vicinity of the sun-earth interior libration point to continuously monitor the space between the sun and the earth, including the distant geomagnetic tail is described. Orbit selection considerations for the ISEE-C are discussed along with stationkeeping requirements and fuel-optimal trajectories. Due to the alignment of the interior libration point with the sun as viewed from the earth, it will be necessary to place the satellite into a 'halo orbit' around the libration point, in order to eliminate solar interference with down-link telemetry. Parametric data for transfer trajectories between an earth parking orbit (altitude about 185 km) and a libration-point orbit are presented. It is shown that the insertion magnitude required for placing a satellite into an acceptable halo orbit is rather modest.

Combustion effects on film cooling

The effects of: (1) a reactive environment on film cooling effectiveness, and (2) film cooling on rocket engine performance were determined experimentally in a rocket thrust chamber assembly operating with hydrogen and oxygen propellants at 300 psi chamber pressure. Tests were conducted using hydrogen, helium, and nitrogen film coolants in an instrumented, thin walled, steel thrust chamber. The film cooling, performance loss, and heat transfer coefficient data were correlated with the ALRC entrainment film cooling model which relates film coolant effectiveness and mixture ratio at the wall to the amount of mainstream gases entrained with the film coolant in a mixing layer. In addition, a comprehensive thermal analysis computer program, HOCOOL, was prepared from previously existing ALRC computer programs and analytical techniques.

Subsystem design package for Mod 2 site data acquisition system: Solar heating and cooling

The Mod II Site Data Acquisition Subsystem (SDAS) is designed to collect data from sensors located on residential or commercial buildings using a solar heating and/or cooling system. The SDAS takes the data obtained from sensors located on the solar heating and/or cooling system, processes the data into a suitable format, stores the data for a period of time, and provides the capability for both telephone retrieval by the Central Data Processing System (CDPS) and manual retrieval of the data for transfer to the central site. The unit is designed so it will not degrade the operation of the solar heating/cooling system which it is monitoring.

A study of multiple-shaker modal survey testing

The principal objective was to examine and to assess the practical value of a method of multiple-shaker sinusoidal modal vibration testing known as Asher's method. Numerical studies which simulate the application of Asher's method and a unique experimental implementation of the method were completed. Another objective of the research was to develop and to demonstrate with numerical simulation a quantitative method for determining from transfer function data the number of dominant modes of vibration in sinusoidal structural response.

Advanced marine information delivery

The paper examines the information delivery challenges of the follow-on programs to Seasat-1 as they may progress through the next decade. These challenges include coping with the vast amounts of data to be transferred, fulfilling the temporal requirements on data delivery, and the tradeoffs and developments needed to accomplish the various levels of processing required to convert sensor output into useful information. A need for critical development is clearly identifiable in the areas of (1) low cost ground terminals capable of image extraction and image correlation; (2) dynamic data assimilation to accommodate forecasters; (3) low resolution onboard correlators; and (4) low cost user advisory (display) terminals. The system planners for the Ocean Satellite advanced programs are using an end-to-end data systems approach in meeting these challenges.

A prescription of Winograd's discrete Fourier transform algorithm

A detailed and complete description of Winograd's discrete Fourier transform algorithm (DFT) is presented omitting all proofs and derivations. The algorithm begins with the transfer of data from the input vector array to the working array where the actual transformation takes place, otherwise known as input scrambling and output unscrambling. The third array holds constraints required in the transformation stage that are evaluated in the precomputation stage. The algorithm is made up of several FORTRAN subroutines which are not to be confused with practical software algorithmic implementation since they are designed for clarity and not for speed.

Short interval testing of solar cells

A drawback of conventional electrical evaluation procedures regarding solar cells is related to time consuming operations required in the determination of specific parameters, such as the maximum power point, from the plotted curves, and to the transfer of data to a large digital computer for analysis and manipulation. This is especially true when large numbers of cells must be measured. To overcome such drawbacks, a digital short interval tester was designed and constructed. The new tester provides rapid and accurate measurements at constant temperature. The utilization of a light shutter makes it possible to measure up to 200 data points along the I-V curve in less than a second, thus avoiding thermal effects. Because the system is digital, parameters such as the maximum power may be calculated directly from the data.

The deep lunar electrical conductivity profile - Structural and thermal inferences

Simultaneous lunar surface and orbital magnetometer records are reexamined, to ascertain intervals which may be suitable for measuring lunar inductive response in the solar wind and terrestrial magnetosheath. Power spectral estimates of the response tangent to the lunar surface, defined in terms of transfer and gain functions, are obtained for the 0.0001-0.01 Hz frequency range. The maximum consistency of estimates from different time intervals is found when the initial analysis is limited to the tangential direction of maximum incident power, or that direction in which the ratio of signal to background noise is greatest. Spherically symmetric plasma confinement theory is used in the interpretation of transfer function data, by way of forward model calculations, under the assumption of continuous electrical conductivity increase with depth. Results are presented for internal electrical conductivity profile, metallic core radius, and selenotherm limits.

Further efforts to limit lunar internal temperatures from electrical conductivity determinations

A representative set of 18 electrical conductivity profiles consistent with lunar transfer function data in the 0.00001 to 0.001 Hz range is generated by means of a Monte Carlo procedure. Laboratory electrical conductivity vs temperature data extrapolated to lower and higher temperatures are used to convert the 18 profiles into temperature profiles for a series of radially homogeneous olivine-pyroxene mixtures ranging from 100% olivine to 100% aluminous orthopyroxene. The former yields selenotherms approaching the Ringwood-Essene solidus at depths near 500 km, while additions of the latter in concentrations greater than 15-30 vol% leads to cooler selenotherms which approach the solidus only at depths greater than about 1000 km. On the basis of independent geophysical constraints, the profile envelopes for compositions containing more than 15-30 vol% aluminous orthopyroxene are considered to be the most probable.

Reconstruction of a 3-dimensional transonic rotor flow field from holographic interferogram data

Holographic interferometry and computer-assisted tomography (CAT) are used to determine the transonic velocity field of a model rotor blade in hover. A pulsed ruby laser recorded 40 interferograms with a 2-ft-diam view field near the model rotor-blade tip operating at a tip Mach number of 0.90. After digitizing the interferograms and extracting fringe-order functions, the data are transferred to a CAT code. The CAT code then calculates the perturbation velocity in seeral planes above the blade surface. The values from the holography-CAT method compare favorably with previously obtained numerical computations in most locations near the blade tip. The results demonstrate the technique's potential for three-dimensional transonic rotor flow studies.
