Development of new techniques for the characterization of crystals and their growth solutions: Center director's discretionary fund

The solubility measurement system and the laser scattering microscope system were designed, built, and utilized for the study of crystal growth solutions and crystal characterization measurements. Solubility measurements and crystal defect maps were made with this equipment for a number of new materials. In some cases, where there have been published solubility data (i.e., TGS), more accurate measurements were made and discrepancies in the published data were resolved. The design of these instruments is presented along with a description of their use and some typical data generated using them.

Airborne in-situ spectral characterization and concentration estimates of fluorescent organics as a function of depth

The primary purpose of many in-situ airborne light scattering experiments in natural waters is to spectrally characterize the subsurface fluorescent organics and estimate their relative concentrations. This is often done by shining a laser beam into the water and monitoring its subsurface return signal. To do this with the proper interpretation, depth must be taken into account. If one disregards depth dependence when taking such estimates, both their spectral characteristics and their concentrations estimates can be rather ambiguous. A simple airborne lidar configuration is used to detect the subsurface return signal from a particular depth and wavelength. Underwater scatterometer were employed to show that in-situ subsurface organics are very sensitive to depth, but they also require the use of slow moving boats to cover large sample areas. Also, their very entry into the water disturbs the sample it is measuring. The method described is superior and simplest to any employed thus far.

Calibration source maintenance, characterization and development

The Standards and Calibration Office maintains visible and near infrared calibration sources for the use of various GSFC organizations instrument calibration needs and related field activities. These are large aperture spherical and hemispherical integrating sources designed to provide a spatially uniform absolute spectral radiance with a well-defined angular uniformity characteristic. In essence, the calibration and characterization efforts involve monitoring and documenting the stability and the absolute radiance of these calibration sources. These sources are recalibrated on a regular basis to both document any changes that might occur in the output of the sources and to provide the most up-to-date calibration data for the source users. Efforts included comparing the calibration numbers with those of a commercial calibration laboratory that was engaged to do independent calibrations. However, the most recent calibrations done by the independent laboratory and those done by GSFC personnel show a rather large discrepancy (10 to 15 percent). Efforts are underway to resolve these differences.

Characterization of GaAlAs optical waveguide heterostructures grown by molecular beam epitaxy

Multiple-layer GaAlAs optical waveguide heterostructures have been grown by MBE. These samples were designed to operate at 840 nm with negligible coupling of guided light to the absorbing GaAs substrate. The Al concentration was 13 percent for the guiding layer and was 16 percent for the cladding layers. The process for growing waveguide layers was calibrated primarily by high-energy electron diffraction, with the optical quality confirmed by photoluminescence measurements. Channel waveguide structures having widths of 5 microns were etched in a low-pressure magnetically confined multipolar plasma reactor. The resulting waveguide structures were characterized by Raman spectroscopy, ellipsometry, AES, and optical-waveguide loss measurements.

Status of several Stirling loss characterization efforts and their significance for Stirling space power development

NASA-Lewis and other U.S. Government agencies have supported experimental and analytical programs for the characterization of Stirling cycle engines' thermodynamic losses, with a view to the improvement of Stirling engine design capabilities. The Space Power Demonstrator Engine is noted to have benefited from these efforts; test data and model predictions suggest that even greater performance improvements would be obtainable through additional modifications of engine regenerator and heater hardware.

Growth and characterization of GaAs layers on Si substrates by migration-enhanced molecular beam epitaxy

Migration-enhanced molecular beam epitaxial (MEMBE) growth and characterization of the GaAs layer on Si substrates (GaAs/Si) are reported. The MEMBE growth method is described, and material properties are compared with those of normal two-step MBE-grown or in situ annealed layers. Micrographs of cross-section view transmission electron microscopy and scanning surface electron microscopy of MEMBE-grown GaAs/Si showed dislocation densities of 10 to the 7th/sq cm. AlGaAs/GaAs double heterostructures have been successfully grown on MEMBE GaAs/Si by both metalorganic chemical vapor deposition and liquid phase epitaxy.

Automated cataloging and characterization of space-derived data

One of the most significant technical issues that NASA must address and resolve is the problem of managing the enormous amounts of scientific and engineering data that will be generated by the next generation of remote sensing systems such as the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) and the Earth Observing System (EOS). The amount of data these sensors are expected to produce will be orders of magnitude greater than NASA has ever experienced. Consequently, new solutions must be developed for managing, accessing, and automatically inputting the data into a database in some expressive fashion that will provide a meaningful understanding and effective utilization of this data in a multidisciplinary environment. Presently, scientific data provided by satellites and other sources are processed, cataloged, and archived according to narrow mission or project-specific requirements with little regard to the semantics of the overall research. Scientists therefore lack knowledge of or access to potentially valuable data outside their own field. What is needed is an innovative approach that will allow collected data to be automatically cataloged, characterized, and managed in a domain-community. A concept and design approach that employs expert system-based knowledge controllers combined with advanced spatial database systems and graphical data structures is discussed.

Characterization of debond growth mechanism in adhesively bonded composites under mode II static and fatigue loadings

An experimental investigation of adhesively bonded composite joint was conducted to characterize the debond growth mechanism under mode II static and fatigue loadings. For this purpose, end-notched flexure specimens of graphite/epoxy (T300/5208) adherends bonded with EC 3445 adhesive were tested. In all specimen tested, the fatigue failure occurred in the form of cyclic debonding. The present study confirmed the result of previous studies that total strain-energy-release rate is the driving parameter for cyclic debonding. Further, the debond growth resistance under cyclic loading with full shear reversal (i.e., stress ratio, R = -1) is drastically reduced in comparison to the case when subjected to cyclic shear loading with no shear reversal (i.e., R = 0.1).

Characterization of Venera 15/16 geologic units from Pioneer Venus reflectivity and roughness data

The characterization of geologic units defined for the Venus surface on the basis of Venera 15/16 image data is presently conducted in light of Pioneer Venus reflectivity and rms slope data. Four geologic-unit groups are distinguished: smooth rocky units, rough ones, rough high-dielectric units, and diffusely-scattering ones. Models have been tested for the surface-property origins of several units, and it is determined that plains and tectonic units may be contrasted in terms not only of surface roughness but of surface-roughening tectonic deformation that appears to dominate the erosional regime of Venus.

Identification and characterization of structural nonlinearities in the Space Shuttle Main Engine

Structural nonlinearities should be considered in the analysis and modeling of mechanical systems for accuracy in predicting dynamic behavior. Moreover, checks for nonlinearity should address the type and class of nonlinearity in the structure and identify the probable cause. A series of experimental modal survey tests were carried out to determine and characterize the structural nonlinearities of the Space Shuttle Main Engine main injector. Different excitation regimes at various amplitudes were utilized to induce vibration and strain, and acceleration measurements were taken at judiciously selected locations. The test results indicated that both stiffness and damping nonlinearities were present.

W-band six-port network analyzer for two-port characterization of millimeter wave transistors

A W-band (75-100 GHz) six-port junction network analyzer was constructed from commercially available descrete waveguide components and was used for the direct two-port S-parameter measurement of active three-terminal devices. A comparison between the six-port and a down-converter-type frequency extender for a conventional network analyzer revealed the superior performance of the six-port. The application of the six-port to characterize a 0.1-micron gate-length HEMT at W-band is described, and representative results are presented.

Mechanical properties characterization of composite sandwich materials intended for space antenna applications

The composite materials proposed for use in the Advanced Communications Technology Satellite (ACTS) program contains a new, high modulus graphite fiber as the reinforcement. A study was conducted to measure certain mechanical properties of the new fiber-reinforced material as well as of a composite-faced aluminum honeycomb sandwich structure. Properties were measured at -157, 22, and 121 C. Complete characterization of this material was not intended. Longitudinal tensile, picture-frame shear, short-beam shear, and flexural tests were performed on specimens of the composite face-sheet materials. Unidirectional, cross-plied, and quasi-isotropic fiber composite ply layup designs were fabricated and tested. These designs had been studied by using NASA's Integrated Composite Analyzer (ICAN) computer program. Flexural tests were conducted on (+/- 60/0 deg) sub s composite-faced sandwich structure material. Resistance strain gages were used to measure strains in the tensile, picture-frame, and sandwich flexural tests. The sandwich flexural strength was limited by the core strength at 157 and 22 c. The adhesive bond strength was the limiting factor at 121 C. Adhesive mechanical properties are reflected in sandwich structure flexural properties when the span-to-depth ratio is great enough to allow a significant shear effect on the load-deflection behavior of the sandwich beam. Most measured properties agreed satisfactorily with the properties predicted by ICAN.

Theoretical characterization of the minimum energy path for hydrogen atom addition to N2 - Implications for the unimolecular lifetime of HN2

Results are reported from CASSCF externally contracted CI ab initio computations of the minimum-energy path for the addition of H to N2. The theoretical basis and numerical implementation of the computations are outlined, and the results are presented in extensive tables and graphs and characterized in detail. The zero-point-corrected barrier for HN2 dissociation is estimated as 8.5 kcal/mol, and the lifetime of the lowest-lying quasi-bound vibrational state of HN2 is found to be between 88 psec and 5.8 nsec (making experimental observation of this species very difficult).

Supercritical fluid extraction and characterization of lipids from algae Scenedesmus obliquus

Lipids were extracted from a protein concentrate of green algae (Scenedesmus obliquus), using a one-step supercritical carbon dioxide extraction procedure in presence of ethanol as an entrainer, and were characterized. The compositions of neutral lipids, glycolipids, and phospholipids, separated into individual components by column, thin-layer, and gas-liquid chromatography procedures, are presented. Fatty acid composition patterns indicated that the major fatty acids were 16:0, 16:1, 16:2, 16:3, 16:4, 18:1, 18:2, and 18:3. The lipids of S. obliquus were found to contain relatively high concentrations of polyunsaturated fatty acids and essential fatty acids.

Characterization of Si/CoSi2/Si(111) heterostructures using Auger plasmon losses

The Si/CoSi2/Si heterostructures prepared by codeposition and solid-phase epitaxy on Si(111) substrates were characterized using Auger plasmon data as a measure of Si overlayer thickness. The method of calibration is described, and the results of two studies, including a study of islanding in Si/CoSi2/Si and a study of diffusion in CoSi2/Si are presented, illustrating the utility of the Auger plasmon loss technique. It is shown that, most likely, the diffusion proceeds through residual defects in the CoSi2.

Experimental characterization of hollow-cathode plasma sources at Frascati

An experimental characterization has been conducted for hollow cathodes applicable as plasma contactors on Space Shuttle-based experiments. The diagnostics tests were conducted in an 0.5 cu m vacuum chamber by means of Langmuir probes at various distances from the source. Two electron populations are noted, one in the 0.3-1 eV and the other in the 7-11 eV temperature range. Current developments in the design of plasma chambers incorporating magnetic field compensation are noted.

Stereological characterization of dry alpine snow for microwave remote sensing

A persistent problem in investigations of electromagnetic properties of snow, from reflectance at visible wavelengths to emission and backscattering in the microwave, has been the proper characterization of the snow's physical properties. It is suggested that the granular and laminar structure of snow can be measured in its aggregated state by stereology performed on sections prepared from snow specimens, and that these kinds of measurements can be incorporated into models of the electromagnetic properties. With careful sampling, anisotropy in the snow microstructure at various scales can be quantified. It is shown how stereological parameters can be averaged over orientation and optical depth for radiative transfer modeling.
