Evaluation of Programming Language-Aware Diffs for Improving Developer Productivity

As the number of supported platforms for SNL software increases, so do the testing requirements. This increases the total time spent between when a developer submits code for testing, and when tests are completed. This in turn leads developers to hold off submitting code for testing, meaning that when code is ready for testing there's a lot more of it. This increases the likelihood of merge conflicts which the developer must resolve by hand -- because someone else touched the files near the lines the developer touched. Current text-based diff tools often have trouble resolving conflicts in these cases. Work in Europe and Japan has demonstrated that, using programming language aware diff tools (e.g., using the abstract syntax tree (AST) a compiler might generate) can reduce the manual labor necessary to resolve merge conflicts. These techniques can detect code blocks which have moved, as opposed than current text-based diff tools, which only detect insertions / deletions of text blocks. In this study, we evaluate one such tool, GumTree, and see how effective it is as a replacement for traditional text-based diff approaches.

Micromundos biominerales en las algas rojas

Coralline algae (rhodophyta) populate vast pinkish colour regions of the coast. If you step on them in your bare feet, they might hurt you, because they are hard and sharp. Many organisms find shelter and develop within their tiny branches. Photosynthesis of coralline algae conducts the formation of carbonates that exhibit a fascinating architecture. The alga and its associated microorganisms (microbiota) participate in the formation of these minerals, that accumulate and cement the materials that ultimately shape beaches and coastal lines. Carbonates are susceptible to acid-base chemistry; thus, their structural stability and their dissolution depend on the pH of the surrounding environment. Therefore, these biominerals and the marine organisms that build them (such as algae, corals, mollusks or equinoderms) are vulnerable to ocean acidification. By trying to see beyond our eyesight, we were able to understand that algal branches hide an amazing structural strength, where its microstructure and chemistry play a major role. We found minerals with a vast structural and thermal stability in the algal body, named algal thallus. Currently, basic science explores coralline red and green algae as interesting models to understand carbon sequestration in stable structures. Therefore, this research might inspire the development of technologies to mitigate climate change.

Improved Acquisition and Reconstruction for Wavelength-Resolved Neutron Tomography

Wavelength-resolved neutron tomography (WRNT) is an emerging technique for characterizing samples relevant to the materials sciences in 3D. WRNT studies can be carried out at beam lines in spallation neutron or reactor-based user facilities. Because of the limited availability of experimental time, potential imperfections in the neutron source, or constraints placed on the acquisition time by the type of sample, the data can be extremely noisy resulting in tomographic reconstructions with significant artifacts when standard reconstruction algorithms are used. Furthermore, making a full tomographic measurement even with a low signal-to-noise ratio can take several days, resulting in a long wait time before the user can receive feedback from the experiment when traditional acquisition protocols are used. In this paper, we propose an interlaced scanning technique and combine it with a model-based image reconstruction algorithm to produce high-quality WRNT reconstructions concurrent with the measurements being made. The interlaced scan is designed to acquire data so that successive measurements are more diverse in contrast to typical sequential scanning protocols. The model-based reconstruction algorithm combines a data-fidelity term with a regularization term to formulate the wavelength-resolved reconstruction as minimizing a high-dimensional cost-function. Using an experimental dataset of a magnetite sample acquired over a span of about two days, we demonstrate that our technique can produce high-quality reconstructions even during the experiment compared to traditional acquisition and reconstruction techniques. In summary, the combination of the proposed acquisition strategy with an advanced reconstruction algorithm provides a novel guideline for designing WRNT systems at user facilities.

The Gaia-ESO Survey: Oxygen Abundance in the Galactic Thin and Thick Disks

We analyze the oxygen abundances of a stellar sample representative of the two major Galactic populations: the thin and thick disks. The aim is to investigate the differences between members of the Galactic disks and contribute to the understanding of the origin of oxygen chemical enrichment in the Galaxy. The analysis is based on the [O i] = 6300.30 Å oxygen line in high-resolution spectra (R ∼ 52,500) obtained from the Gaia-ESO public spectroscopic Survey (GES). By comparing the observed spectra with a theoretical data set computed in LTE with the SPECTRUM synthesis and ATLAS12 codes, we derive the oxygen abundances of 516 FGK dwarfs for which we have previously measured carbon abundances. Based on kinematic, chemical, and dynamical considerations, we identify 20 thin and 365 thick disk members. We study the potential trends of both subsamples in terms of their chemistry ([O/H], [O/Fe], [O/Mg], and [C/O] versus [Fe/H] and [Mg/H]), age, and position in the Galaxy. The main results are that (a) [O/H] and [O/Fe] ratios versus [Fe/H] show systematic differences between thin and thick disk stars with an enhanced O abundance of thick disk stars with respect to thin disk members and a monotonic decrement of [O/Fe] with increasing metallicity, even at metal-rich regime; (b) there is a smooth correlation of [O/Mg] with age in both populations, suggesting that this abundance ratio can be a good proxy of stellar ages within the Milky Way; and (c) thin disk members with [Fe/H] ≃ 0 display a [C/O] ratio smaller than the solar value, suggesting a possibly outward migration of the Sun from lower Galactocentric radii.

WIYN Open Cluster Study. LXXXV. Li in NGC 2243: Implications for Stellar and Galactic Evolution

High-dispersion spectra in the Li λ6708 region have been obtained and analyzed in the old, metal-deficient cluster NGC 2243. From Hydra spectra for 29 astrometric and radial velocity members, we derive rotational velocities, as well as [Fe/H], [Ca/H], [Si/H], and [Ni/H] based on 17, 1, 1, and 3 lines, respectively. Using ROBOSPECT, an automatic equivalent width measurement program, we derive [Fe/H] = −0.54 ± 0.11 (MAD), for an internal precision for the cluster [Fe/H] below 0.03 dex. Given the more restricted line set, comparable values for [Ca/H], [Si/H], and [Ni/H] are −0.48 ± 0.19, −0.44 ± 0.11, and −0.61 ± 0.06, respectively. With E(B − V) = 0.055, appropriate isochrones imply (m − M) = 13.2 ± 0.1 and an age of 3.6 ± 0.2 Gyr. Using available VLT spectra and published Li abundances, we construct an Li sample of over 100 stars extending from the tip of the giant branch to 0.5 mag below the Li dip. The Li dip is well populated and, when combined with results for NGC 6819 and Hyades/Praesepe, implies a mass/metallicity slope of 0.4 M {sub ⊙}/dex for the high-mass edge of the Li dip. The A(Li) distribution among giants reflects the degree of Li variation among the turnoff stars above the Li dip, itself a function of stellar mass and metallicity and strongly anticorrelated with a v {sub rot} distribution that dramatically narrows with age. Potential implications of these patterns for the interpretation of Li among dwarf and giant field populations, especially selection biases tied to age and metallicity, are discussed.

Low-mass Active Galaxies in the SAMI Galaxy Survey with Spatially Resolved Spectroscopy

The smallest supermassive black holes (BHs), which provide constraints on BH seeds, reside in low-mass galaxies. Here, we present a systematic analysis of 990 low-mass galaxies in the SAMI Galaxy Survey to identify emission from accreting BHs using integral field spectroscopy (IFS). Employing a novel automated scoring algorithm based on spatially resolved narrow emission-line diagnostics, we find signatures of active galactic nuclei (AGNs) in 41 galaxies, as well as an additional 46 (less secure) candidates. The galaxies have stellar masses between 10 9.4 ≲ M ⋆ /M ⊙ ≲ 10 10 (down to 10 8.5 , including less secure candidates), redshifts z ≲ 0.06, and morphologies ranging from early-type ellipticals to late-type spirals. Our AGN fraction of 4% (9% if we include the less secure candidates) is significantly higher than those reported by studies using single-fiber spectroscopy (≲1%–2%). Indeed, our additional analysis of single-fiber spectra of the objects in our sample demonstrates that many of our AGN candidates detected via IFS are missed. This work highlights the advantages of IFS, especially the ability to capture extended or decentralized emission from accreting BHs.

Variability of plasma-line enhancement in ionospheric modification experiments.

A simple explanation for the variations of plasma-line intensity is suggested. The explanation is based on the fact that the plasma waves responsible for scattering the radar waves occur over a very limited range of heights. The explanation further makes use of the fact that the position of these height ranges of generation depends primarily on the gradient of the number density and to a lesser extent on the temperature and the orientation of the diagnostic radar beam.

Integration of safety engineering into a cost optimized development program.

A six-segment management model is presented, each segment of which represents a major area in a new product development program. The first segment of the model covers integration of specialist engineers into 'systems requirement definition' or the system engineering documentation process. The second covers preparation of five basic types of 'development program plans.' The third segment covers integration of system requirements, scheduling, and funding of specialist engineering activities into 'work breakdown structures,' 'cost accounts,' and 'work packages.' The fourth covers 'requirement communication' by line organizations. The fifth covers 'performance measurement' based on work package data. The sixth covers 'baseline requirements achievement tracking.'

NO and O3 measurements in the lower stratosphere from a U-2 aircraft

In situ measurements of nitric oxide and ozone were carried out at altitudes up to 21 km during two flights of a U-2 aircraft on Dec. 6 and 18, 1973, over the west coast of the United States. A chemiluminescent detector based on the luminescent reaction of nitric acid with excess ozone was used in nitric acid measurements. Ozone concentration measurements were based on the absorption of the Hg line at 2,537 A in the Hartley continuum. The results are compared with available data.

Metastable 2D atomic nitrogen in the mid-latitude nocturnal ionosphere

The only source at night at midlatitudes of N(2D) in the F region is the dissociative recombination of the positive NO ion, and the only important sinks are quenching by atomic oxygen and electrons. Ground-based measurements of the 5200 angstrom emission line resulting from the transition from N(2D) to N(4S) combined with satellite observations of neutral and ion densities and temperatures and the shape of the 5200 angstrom profile are used to relate the rate of quenching by atomic oxygen and the efficiency of production of N(2D) to the rate of quenching by electrons. A rate of quenching by atomic oxygen of 1.5-2.5 x 10 to the minus 12th cu cm/s and an efficiency of (0.8-1.0) plus or minus 30% for the production of N(2D) are obtained.

System of Programmed Modules for Measuring Photographs with a Gamma-Telescope

Physical experiments using tracking cameras resulted in hundreds of thousands of stereo photographs of events being received. To process such a large volume of information, automatic and semiautomatic measuring systems are required. At the Institute of Space Research of the Academy of Science of the USSR, a system for processing film information from the spark gamma-telescope was developed. The system is based on a BPS-75 projector in line with the minicomputer Elektronika 1001. The report describes this system. The various computer programs available to the operators are discussed.

Gravity waves and GOES IR data study of an isolated tornadic storm on 29 May 1977

Enhanced convection-initiated gravity waves associated with an isolated tornado in the absence of a squall line are investigated. Ray-tracing computations based on data observed on May 29, 1977 indicated that the wave sources were located in north-central Oklahoma. Comparison with a radar echo map during the time period when the waves were excited showed that the waves were generated by an isolated cloud with enhanced convection. GOES infrared digital data during the time period from wave excitation to tornado touchdown were analyzed. Results showed that the cloud where the gravity waves were excited was characterized by both a very low temperature at the cloud top and a very high expansion rate of the cold cloud-top area. The lead time between the excitation of the gravity waves and the tornado touchdown is discussed in conjunction with the growth rate of the clouds associated with the tornado.

An implicit finite-difference code for inviscid and viscous cascade flow

An implicit finite-difference code is developed to solve either inviscid or viscous flow about two-dimensional cascade blade elements. General coordinate transformations are used so that boundaries can coincide with coordinate lines, and an automatic grid generation routine based on elliptic partial differential equations is employed to mesh arbitrary cascade elements. Characteristic combinations of the differential equations are used at inflow and outflow boundaries. Computed results for both inviscid and viscous flow are compared with other existing cascade solutions and experimental data.

System and method for character recognition

A character recognition system is disclosed in which each character in a retina, defining a scanning raster, is scanned with random lines uniformly distributed over the retina. For each type of character to be recognized the system stores a probability density function (PDF) of the random line intersection lengths and/or a PDF of the random line number of intersections. As an unknown character is scanned, the random line intersection lengths and/or the random line number of intersections are accumulated and based on a comparison with the prestored PDFs a classification of the unknown character is performed.
