Enhancing CMC Temperature Performance in High Hydrogen Environments using Field Assisted Sintering Technology

This final report summarizes the developments in field assisted sintering technology (FAST) for rapid fabrication of ceramic matrix composite (CMC) materials with integrated environmental barrier coatings (EBCs), as well as their performance in a representative gas turbine combustor environment including stagnant flame zones, and high velocity product zones. CMCs are a possible high temperature tolerant material system for gas turbine engines, which are currently the dominant source of electric power production and the primary source of aircraft propulsion. However, CMCs are costly and time-consuming (on the order of weeks to months) to fabricate, and CMCs based on silicon carbide (SiC) ceramics are susceptible to water vapor degradation requiring the use of specialized EBCs. The manufacturing technique known as FAST can create consolidated parts in as little as a few hours using high pressure and temperature, and may be useful to integrate EBCs into CMCs directly during consolidation.

STARFIRE – Science and Technology Accelerated Research for Fusion Innovation and Reactor Engineering progress report

The STARFIRE hub leverages foundational science and technology (S&T) research and integrated plant modeling tools to advance Inertial Fusion Energy (IFE). S&T breakthroughs achieved in each thrust are incorporated into an integrated modeling tool to assess and prioritize remaining gaps to bridge for IFE to become viable. Scientific highlights span high-gain target design, diode-pumped solid-state lasers, and innovative target manufacturing. Key highlights include the investigation of shock propagation through various foam structures among other limiting factors of compression of IFE target, exploration of novel 3D printing techniques such as light-sheet additive manufacturing for 2-photon polymerization foams, and diode-pumped solid-state laser architectures required for several IFE approaches. In addition, the STARFIRE team has established two public-private working groups to address laser diode supply chain issues and test advanced laser diode configurations. Finally, a lite version of the integrated modeling tool has been developed to facilitate outreach and engage with private companies. STARFIRE’s management structure has been designed to ensure agile resource allocation, robust performance assessment, and alignment with the broader fusion energy mission. STARFIRE’s breakthroughs are disseminated to the community via reports, presentations, and publications, while agreements with private companies are set in place to protect proprietary information.

Voltage Service Limits Smart Contract Using Distributed Ledger Technology for Electrical Utility Grid with Customer-Owned Generator

Modern electrical grids face growing stability risks from customer-owned generators, especially at points of common couplings (PCCs). Disruptive behavior from power-electronic sources can cause protective relays to isolate problematic generators, making measurement integrity critical. This article presents a distributed ledger technology (DLT) approach that uses smart contracts to evaluate PCC voltage measurements and trigger backup breaker operations. The approach is framed as a verifiable, multi-organization attestation and audit layer, not as a real-time control security mechanism. In the proposed architecture, voltage measurements from a hardware protective relay are anchored on a DLT through the Cyber Grid Guard (CGG) system for attestation by both the grid utility and customer-owned generator. A Voltage Service Limits (VSLs) smart contract evaluates the on-chain measurements against allowable phase-voltage limits derived from the ANSI C84.1 standard. The framework is validated in a hardware-relay-in-the-loop test bed under sustained-undervoltage, sustained-overvoltage, and transient line-to-line fault scenarios. The results show that the VSL smart contract can process these measurements and issue backup breaker actions consistent with the defined service-limit criteria, demonstrating the DLT potential as a verifiable audit layer at the PCC that complements primary protection.

Carbon Nanotube Devices for Quantum Technology

Carbon nanotubes, quintessentially one-dimensional quantum objects, possess a variety of electrical, optical, and mechanical properties that are suited for developing devices that operate on quantum mechanical principles. The states of one-dimensional electrons, excitons, and phonons in carbon nanotubes with exceptionally large quantization energies are promising for high-operating-temperature quantum devices. Here, we discuss recent progress in the development of carbon-nanotube-based devices for quantum technology, i.e., quantum mechanical strategies for revolutionizing computation, sensing, and communication. We cover fundamental properties of carbon nanotubes, their growth and purification methods, and methodologies for assembling them into architectures of ordered nanotubes that manifest macroscopic quantum properties. Most importantly, recent developments and proposals for quantum information processing devices based on individual and assembled nanotubes are reviewed.

Search for New Physics with the Compact Muon Solenoid Experiment and QIS-enabled Technology

Understanding the fundamental nature of dark matter (DM)---its cosmological origin, constituents, and interactions---is one of the most important questions in fundamental science today. In this thesis, I present two novel and highly complementary approaches to cover the gaps in sensitivity of current DM searches. The searches are enabled by a first-of-its-kind reconstruction technique to search for hidden-sector particles using the Compact Muon Solenoid (CMS) and by new advances in quantum sensing technology to search for axions and hidden-sector DM. In the first part of this thesis, I present a search for long-lived hidden sector particles, predicted by many extensions of the SM, using a novel technique to reconstruct decays of long-lived particles (LLPs) in the CMS muon detector. The innovative LLP reconstruction technique is sensitive to a broad range of LLP decays and to LLP masses below GeV. The search yields competitive sensitivity for proper lifetime 0.1--1000 m with the full Run 2 dataset recorded at the LHC between 2016--2018 at $\sqrt{s} = 13~$TeV. To extend the physics reach of this novel muon detector shower (MDS) signature, I present the model-independence of MDS and the reinterpretation of the search to a large number of LLP models, demonstrating its complementarity with proposed and existing dedicated LLP experiments. Finally, I present a new dedicated MDS trigger that improves the trigger efficiency by at least an order of magnitude and was deployed in 2022, at the start of Run 3 of the LHC operations. In the second part of the thesis, I present for the first time, the use of a novel quantum sensor, the low-noise and single-photon sensitive superconducting nanowire single photon detectors (SNSPDs), to directly detect dark matter. The low detection threshold and ultra-low dark count rate of SNSPDs can close the gap in DM discovery reach due to the current limitations in detector sensitivity. I will present my work on the development and characterization of SNSPDs for two entirely new experiments to directly detect axions via absorption and hidden-sector DM via electron scattering. The search for axions employs a novel broadband reflector technique with the Broadband Reflector Experiment for Axion Detection (BREAD). A unique parabolic mirror is then used to focus axion-converted photons to the SNSPDs, extending the reach to axion masses of 0.04--1 eV. On the other hand, by coupling the SNSPDs with gallium arsenide, a bright cryogenic scintillator well matched to SNSPD detection, a prototype sensing system can be built as a basis of new direct DM detection experiments capable of extending the discovery to DM masses as low as 1 MeV.

CACTUS: A depleted monolithic active timing sensor using a CMOS radiation hard technology

The planned luminosity increase at the Large Hadron Collider in the coming years has triggered interest in the use of the particles' time of arrival as additional information in specialized detectors to mitigate the impact of pile-up. The required time resolution is of the order of tens of picoseconds, with a spatial granularity of the order of 1 mm. A time measurement at this precision level will also be of interest beyond the LHC and beyond high energy particle physics. We present in this paper the first developments towards a radiation hard Depleted Monolithic Active Pixel Sensor (DMAPS), with high-resolution time measurement capability. The technology chosen is a standard high voltage CMOS process, in conjunction with a high resistivity detector material, which has already proven to efficiently detect particles in tracking applications after several hundred of Mrad of irradiation.

Combined Heat and Power Technology Fact Sheet Series: District Energy

This fact sheet provides an overview of district energy systems, which are characterized by one or more central plants producing hot water, steam, and/or chilled water, which then flows through a network of insulated pipes to provide hot water, space heating, and/or air conditioning for nearby buildings. District energy systems serve a variety of end-use markets, including downtowns (central business districts), college and university campuses, hospitals and healthcare facilities, airports, military bases, and industrial complexes. By combining loads for multiple buildings, district energy systems create economies of scale that help reduce energy costs and enable the use of high-efficiency technologies such as combined heat and power (CHP).

IS BLOCKCHAIN A SUITABLE TECHNOLOGY FOR ENSURING THE INTEGRITY OF DATA SHARED BY LIGHTING AND OTHER BUILDING SYSTEMS?

Increasing amounts of data are available from lighting and other building systems. In commercial buildings, these data can be used to improve system and energy performance, detect and diagnose faults, and facilitate maintenance. Building data are not only of interest to owners and operators of the building systems, however. Owners and operators of similar buildings, manufacturers of building systems, utilities, and city agencies also have interesting use cases. Energy data can, for example, be used to verify the performance of energy-conservation measures, issue renewableenergy certificates, and financially settle grid services. Increased data sharing, however, significantly expands the cyber-attack surface, creating new challenges. In this work, blockchain is explored as an option for ensuring the integrity of data that are shared by lighting and other building systems. Blockchain fundamentals and variants are briefly reviewed, and value propositions relevant to building systems are discussed. A recently developed blockchain applicability framework (BAF) that builds upon and addresses the limitations of previous applicability models is also briefly reviewed. The BAF is used to assess the suitability of blockchain over other technologies or approaches for building-data applications, using emerging connected lighting systems as an example use case.
