Effect of Heat Treatment on the Microstructure and Mechanical Properties of Monel K500 Alloy Fabricated Via L-PBF and LP-DED

This study examines and compares the effect of different heat treatments (HT) on the microstructure and mechanical properties of Monel K500 fabricated using laser powder bed fusion (L-PBF) and laser powder directed energy deposition (LP-DED) technologies. The as-fabricated Monel K500 specimens exhibited dendritic microstructure and elemental micro-segregation due to high cooling rates induced during the fabrication process. The applicability of HT proposed in the literature for wrought Monel K500 was investigated for L-PBF and LP-DED using four different HT procedures involving hot isostatic pressing (HIP), solution annealing (SA), and aging. The mechanical properties of test specimens were evaluated using uniaxial tensile testing at room temperature. The microstructural evolution of test specimens during HT was analyzed using a scanning electron microscope. For all HT conditions investigated, L-PBF Monel K500 specimens consistently displayed higher strength and lower ductility compared to the LP-DED counterparts. The HT procedure involving HIP at 1160°C for 3hr at 100 MPa, SA at 1100°C for 15 min, and three step aging at 610°C for 16 hr, 540°C for 6 hr, and 480°C for 8 hr resulted in highest strength for both L-PBF and LP-DED fabricated Monel K500.

Harnessing Artificial Intelligence for Medical Diagnosis and Treatment During Space Exploration Missions

BACKGROUND The medical capabilities necessary for long-duration exploration missions (LDEMs) will differ tremendously from those currently available to crew medical officers (CMOs) on the International Space Station (ISS). Ground support will be more challenging due to distance-related communication delays and data transmission, and resource utilization must be optimized given limited ability for resupply. Clinical decision support systems (CDSSs) can help mitigate these limitations. The recent launch of generative artificial intelligence (AI) tools based upon large language models (LLM) support the creation of a smart assistant for onboard triage, diagnosis, and guided treatment of medical conditions during these missions. The Informing Mission Planning via Analysis of Complex Tradespaces (IMPACT) tool can help predict which clinical problems and outcomes are likely to occur for a design reference mission (DRM) and assist Medical Operations and systems engineering teams in creating a medical system that may optimally mitigate the predicted risks. The purpose of this study was to identify AI tools currently available or in development for the assistive diagnosis and care of medical conditions predicted for an extended duration Lunar mission. METHODS The 119 medical conditions currently built into the IMPACT suite were categorized into systems, and these diagnoses were used as keywords for our literature search. Using PubMed and Google Scholar, we performed a literature survey of AI tools applicable to these conditions. Article inclusion criteria included publication between the years 2017-2023, as the sentinel paper discussing the “selective attention” driving ChatGPT and other generative transformer models was published in June 2017. Where applicable, we reviewed only the top 1000 research articles (based on relevance) for each of the keywords/phrases. AI tools whose training sets were exclusive to a pediatric patient population were excluded. We also excluded any medical diagnostic tools (such as CT, MRI, mass spectrometry) or procedures (such as endoscopy, surgery) that are unlikely to be available during LDEMs due to mass and volume constraints, CMO knowledge, skills, and abilities, and/or inherent procedural risks. RESULTS Our survey highlighted several AI-driven tools for the triage, diagnosis, and management of those medical conditions highlighted by IMPACT. Selected publications for each medical condition were then screened for inclusion within ten systems-based categories including: general diagnostic tools (25), tools to diagnose and manage respiratory (40), dermatologic (34), neurologic (28), auditory and vestibular (30), ophthalmic (34), musculoskeletal (104), infection-associated (92), and gynecologic (19) conditions, as well as tools that could be deployed in the setting of trauma and emergency (34). CONCLUSIONS Numerous AI-driven tools were highlighted within this literature survey, ranging from chatbot assistants that triage knee pain to vision transformer models for diagnosis of ophthalmic conditions using ocular surface images captured with a mobile phone. Remaining challenges include optimizing connectivity and integration of existing and developing systems into the vehicles or habitats. Notably, findings from this survey could help guide the initial design of an all-encompassing, onboard medical AI assistant for use during future LDEMs.

Reflectivity characterization of in-flow acoustic floor treatment for the NASA Langley 14- by 22-Foot Subsonic Tunnel

An experimental campaign was performed to assess acoustic modifications to the NASA Langley Research Center 14- by 22-Foot Subsonic Tunnel. Recent acoustic test campaigns in this facility have emphasized the reduction of aerodynamic noise due to flow scrubbing across acoustically treated floor baskets. However, the measures implemented to address this noise contaminant have resulted in the installation of floor basket coverings of high acoustic reflectivity. Therefore, a controlled test campaign was performed to identify a suitable acoustic basket configuration in terms of both acoustic absorptivity and reduced flow scrubbing noise. This test campaign was conducted in two phases: the first in an anechoic chamber facility on a single acoustic basket panel to identify a notional configuration of acceptable absorptivity, and the second in a complete floor basket installation checkout test in the NASA Langley 14- by 22-Foot Subsonic Tunnel. Results show that the newly implemented floor treatment exhibits suitable performance in both desired categories of acoustic absorptivity and reduced flow scrubbing noise. This campaign has also validated the effectiveness and usefulness of the anechoic chamber test configuration as a means of assessing acoustic reflections at oblique angles of incidence.

Oculometric Biomarkers of Visuomotor Deficits in Clinically Asymptomatic Patients With Systemic Lupus Erythematosus Undergoing Long-Term Hydroxychloroquine Treatment

Introduction: This study examines a set of oculomotor measurements, or “oculometric” biomarkers, as potential early indicators of visual and visuomotor deficits due to retinal toxicity in asymptomatic Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE) patients on long-term hydroxychloroquine (HCQ) treatment. The aim is to identify subclinical functional impairments that are otherwise undetectable by standard clinical tests and to link them to structural retinal changes. Methods: We measured oculomotor responses in a cohort of SLE patients on chronic HCQ therapy using a previously established behavioral task and analysis technique. We also examined the relationship between oculometrics, OCT measures of retinal thickness, and standard clinical perimetry measures of visual function in our patient group using Bivariate Pearson Correlation and a Linear Mixed-Effects Model (LMM). Results: Significant visual and visuomotor deficits were found in 12 asymptomatic SLE patients on long-term HCQ therapy compared to a cohort of 17 age-matched healthy controls. Notably, six oculometrics were significantly different. The median initial pursuit acceleration was 22%, steady-state pursuit gain 16%, proportion smooth 7%, and target speed responsiveness 31% lower, while catch-up saccade amplitude was 46% and fixation error 46% larger. Excluding the two patients with diagnosed mild toxicity, four oculometrics, all but fixation error and proportion smooth, remained significantly impaired compared to controls. Across our population of 12 patients (24 retinae), we found that pursuit latency, initial acceleration, steady-state gain, and fixation error were linearly related to retinal thickness even when age was accounted for, while standard measures of clinical function (Mean Deviation and Pattern Standard Deviation) were not. Discussion: Our data show that specific oculometrics are sensitive early biomarkers of functional deficits in SLE patients on HCQ that could be harnessed to assist in the early detection of HCQ-induced retinal toxicity and other visual pathologies, potentially providing early diagnostic value beyond standard visual field and OCT evaluations.

Expanding Ketamine Application for Treatment of Acute Suicidality in Long-Duration Spaceflight

Introduction. The transition to exploration missions places a heightened risk on behavioral health in spaceflight. Although serious psychiatric emergencies during spaceflight have been rare, longer duration missions increase the possibility of emergence in latent mental health disorders due to genetic predisposition, increased autonomy, isolation, helplessness, loss of family member, or catastrophic events. Complicated grief and bereavement have the highest rate of suicidal ideation. Recently, ketamine has been used as an emergent intervention for acute suicidality, promoting its stability, ease of administration, favorable safety profile, and outcomes for reduction of suicidal intent. The goal of this study was to review current literature and collate the understanding of ketamine as a safe, effective pharmacological adjunct for acute suicidality in spaceflight. Methods. This literature review was conducted to collate data on ketamine use for acute suicidality and inform on stability, limitations and utilization of ketamine within extreme environments. Results. 122 publications were reviewed for relevance including 23 randomized-control trials for ketamine use in behavioral emergencies. Discussion. Ketamine is a diverse pharmaceutical with multiple advantageous indications, including acute suicidality, pain, and sedation. Terrestrial use of ketamine suggests a rapidly efficacious medication for reduction in acute suicidality. As behavioral stressors expand related to extended missions, contingencies for behavioral emergencies become increasingly important. Although this review is not intended to re-develop current International Space Station (ISS) protocols, it is the first to discuss the benefits of ketamine in spaceflight as a potential safe, effective multifaceted tool for future exploration missions and treatment for acute suicidal ideation.

Enhanced heavy oil recovery by low salinity polymer flood combined with microgel treatment

“Heavy oil resources account for a large portion of the total oil reserves around the world. The target heavy oil reservoir is located on Alaska’s North Slope (ANS). Advantages of low-salinity HPAM polymer (LSP) over high-salinity polymer (HSP) were demonstrated. LSP could recover more oil with 40% less polymer consumption. No additional oil was recovered by HSP after LSP flood. The first-ever polymer flood pilot on ANS showed remarkable success regarding water cut reduction, oil production increase, delayed breakthrough, and projected oil recovery improvement. Polymer alone was insufficient to achieve satisfactory recovery as the reservoirs were highly heterogeneous. Microgels could improve the effectiveness of polymer flood by reducing water cut and increasing oil recovery. Favorable working conditions were identified. Microgel transport behavior was studied using superpermeable sandpacks (27-221 darcies) with multiple pressure sensors. The particle-to-pore matching size ratio significantly impacted the effectiveness of the gels. A threshold differential pressure (ΔPth) and critical pressure gradient (∇Pcr) were required to push the gels to penetrate and propagate through the channels. The ΔPth and ∇Pcr revealed the underlying mechanisms of selective penetration/placement behavior of microgels in heterogeneous reservoirs. Diagrams were developed to estimate the maximum propagation distance of the gels in channels in conceptual field applications. Sandwich-like channel models and methodologies were developed to comprehensively evaluate the effectiveness of gel materials. Gel retention in the channels was quantified. Results also indicated that the retained gels were dehydrated. Fluid diversion and sweep improvement after gel treatments were evaluated by tracer tests”--Abstract, page iv.
