Graphic displays for large aerodynamic test facilities

A combination of software and hardware for a time-sharing computer is described which allows the user to obtain an on-line data display in the control room of a large research facility. Display and hard copy of alphanumeric data as well as graphical data can be obtained as desired by the user. In addition, a number of utility programs provide for on-line graphic editing, program control, data manipulation, and off-line microfilm processing.

National Aeronautics and Space Administration Manned Spacecraft Center data base requirements study

A study was conducted to evaluate the types of data that the Manned Spacecraft Center (MSC) should automate in order to make available essential management and technical information to support MSC's various functions and missions. In addition, the software and hardware capabilities to best handle the storage and retrieval of this data were analyzed. Based on the results of this study, recommendations are presented for a unified data base that provides a cost effective solution to MSC's data automation requirements. The recommendations are projected through a time frame that includes the earth orbit space station.

Natural Resource Information System, design analysis

The computer-based system stores, processes, and displays map data relating to natural resources. The system was designed on the basis of requirements established in a user survey and an analysis of decision flow. The design analysis effort is described, and the rationale behind major design decisions, including map processing, cell vs. polygon, choice of classification systems, mapping accuracy, system hardware, and software language is summarized.

Development of optimized techniques and requirements for computer enhancement of structural weld radiographs. Volume 1: Technical report

A hardware and software specification covering requirements for the computer enhancement of structural weld radiographs was considered. Three scanning systems were used to digitize more than 15 weld radiographs. The performance of these systems was evaluated by determining modulation transfer functions and noise characteristics. Enhancement techniques were developed and applied to the digitized radiographs. The scanning parameters of spot size and spacing and film density were studied to optimize the information content of the digital representation of the image.

A three-failure-tolerant computer system.

Two basic factors influence the design of highly reliable computer systems: the amount of failures required to be tol erated and the reliability or MTBF required. A computer system designed to tolerate any three single failures in a fail-operational-fail-operational-fail-safe manner for a real-time control application is presented. The design approach uses adaptive majority voting in both hardware and software with a four-level redundant system. Various methods of performing the adaptive majority voting functions were evaluated with the selected approach using a special module termed a voter-comparator switch (VCS). The VCS module allows the computer system to be operated in a variety of redundant modes, depending on the failure tolerance required at any particular time.

Analysis of parallel systems.

A formal analysis procedure for hardware and software computer systems is described. A system is described by a flow table model. The concept of an output hazard is introduced to account for effects of unbounded line delays. Necessary and sufficient conditions for the absence of output hazards are given. A system that contains no output hazards is said to operate correctly if the system state graph that describes all system states and state transitions is free from forbidden states and forbidden state sequences. A flow table solution for the two-component mutual exclusion problem is analyzed and shown to be correct.

The handling qualities simulation program for the augmentor wing jet STOL research aircraft.

Description of a program in which a complete STOL research aircraft (modified de Havilland C8-A Buffalo) was simulated to determine final design values for control systems and devices which augment aircraft control. Program objectives, computer requirements, and the simulation software and hardware are outlined together with the organization of the digital operations. The simulation program in combination with simulator hardware provided test pilots a realistic representation of the aircraft, with the result that various control and stability augmentation systems were evaluated using pilot handling qualities ratings. Final design parameters were then found for the aircraft which is scheduled for flight test in early 1972.

Navigation of 1975 Mars Viking mission.

This paper describes the Viking mission objectives and overall navigation profile from trans-Mars injection through the post-landing station-keeping phase. Included are interplanetary trajectory corrections, Mars orbit insertion, satellite orbit trims to acquire the landing site, lander separation and deorbit, entry, landing, and, finally, orbiter station keeping with the lander. The broad spectrum of navigation activities has strongly influenced the design of the Viking spacecraft and mission. The paper discusses fuel requirements to account for trajectory dispersions and uncertainties, requirements for navigation hardware and software, expected inflight uncertainties, satellite orbit adjustment for landing site acquisition, lander targeting techniques, lander trajectory reconstruction, and lander position determination.

Off-line data analysis and data reduction from digitally controlled random test systems.

This paper discusses the merits of employing the new computer-controlled random environment control systems for fast and efficient large-scale data analysis when they are not being used for test control. Hardware and software requirements are stated. Several of the more familiar frequency functions are defined from the Fourier coefficients, the main product of the Fourier processors used in these control systems. Another function, the probability density function, is defined and suggestions for its application are made. An analysis example is presented. Some programming tips are listed, and the accuracy and reliability of frequency analysis measurements are considered.

Space Shuttle Avionics: a Redundant IMU On-Board Checkout and Redundancy Management System

A failure detection and isolation philosophy applicable to multiple off-the-shelf gimbaled IMUs are discussed. The equations developed are implemented and evaluated with actual shuttle trajectory simulations. The results of these simulations are presented for both powered and unpowered flight phases and at operational levels of four, three, and two IMUs. A multiple system checkout philosophy is developed and simulation results presented. The final task develops a laboratory test plan and defines the hardware and software requirements to implement an actual multiple system and evaluate the interim study results for space shuttle application.
