Fate of arsenic during the interactions between Mn-substituted goethite and dissolved Fe(II)

Geogenic arsenic has become a globally-distributed groundwater contaminant, liberated from the weathering of arsenic-bearing sulfide minerals and often transported to aquifer sediments adsorbed to iron oxides. Among the iron oxides, goethite (α-FeOOH) is uniquely important for the fate of arsenic because of its widespread abundance, stability, and high affinity for binding arsenic. Goethite is ubiquitous in soils and sediments and often contains substituted elements, including manganese. Structural manganese may affect the surface reactivity and redox capacity of goethite and alter the mechanisms of recrystallization catalyzed by dissolved Fe(II), potentially affecting arsenic adsorption. Here, this study examined the fate of As(V) during the interactions between dissolved Fe(II) and Mn-substituted goethites at pH 4 and 7 as well as associated changes in arsenic speciation. At pH 7, the addition of dissolved Fe(II) initially increases the adsorption of As(V) onto Mn-bearing and Mn-free goethites. For the Mn-substituted goethites, the adsorbed As(V) slowly releases to solution at longer aging times. Fe(II) addition at pH 4 slightly increases As(V) uptake by Mn-substituted goethites, with differences in total sorption correlating with the Mn content in goethite. The addition of Fe(II) releases substantial dissolved manganese but the amount solubilized is higher at pH 4 compared to 7, suggesting that the presence of adsorbed As(V) may substantially promote the Mn release at pH 4. X-ray absorption fine structure spectroscopy shows that arsenic is stabilized as As(V) in all the samples and adsorbed on goethite via a bidentate binuclear mechanism. Fitting results show that the binding distance and coordination numbers are stable in Mn-free goethite and Mn-substituted goethite samples; the effect of substituted Mn on the surface complex structure is minor. High resolution transmission electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction confirm that no secondary ferrous arsenate minerals precipitate under both pH conditions. This study improves our understanding of the Fe(II)-As(V) interactions on iron oxides, and demonstrates that the substituted cations such as manganese may quantitatively alter the geochemical fate of arsenic during the reaction of dissolved Fe(II) with Fe(III) oxides.

Oxidation rates and redox stabilization of ferrous iron in trioctahedral smectites

Iron(II)-bearing trioctahedral smectites (saponites) form during anoxic alteration of basaltic rock. They are predicted to have been widespread on the early Earth and are observed in the oceanic subsurface today. Smectite structures, including the occupancy of sites in the octahedral sheet, affect iron redox behavior but the rates and products of trioctahedral smectite oxidation have been largely unexplored to date. In this study we synthesized two Fe(II)-bearing trioctahedral smectites, one moderate (22 wt% Fe) and one high (27 wt% Fe) in iron content. We then examined the rate, extent, and products of their oxidation by dissolved oxygen, nitrite, and hydrogen peroxide. Dissolved oxygen caused partial oxidation of Fe(II) in the smectites with 14 to 43% of Fe(II) unoxidized after 20 to 30 days of exposure. The rate and extent of oxidation correlated with the dissolved oxygen concentration and the Fe(II) content of the clay. The incomplete oxidation in these experiments is consistent with the mixed-valent trioctahedral smectites observed in oxidized natural samples but contrasts with the complete reoxidation by oxygen shown by chemically- or microbially-reduced dioctahedral smectites. Oxidation of structural Fe(II) by 5 mmol L -1 nitrite was negligible for the moderate-iron smectite and yielded only ~17% oxidation after 54 days of reaction for the high-iron smectite. Hydrogen peroxide caused rapid and near-complete oxidation of both clays. Powder X-ray diffraction, variable-temperature Mössbauer spectroscopy, and extended X-ray absorption fine structure spectroscopy together detected no crystalline or short-range-ordered secondary phases and show that oxidized iron remained in the trioctahedral smectite structure. The recalcitrant Fe(II) pool in oxidized trioctahedral smectites exists in less distorted sites than Fe(II) in the initial clays. Its unreactive nature at prolonged reaction times indicates an elevated redox potential generated by the local coordination environment. Slower oxidation rates create a larger recalcitrant Fe(II) pool, suggesting kinetic competition between oxidation and a process involved in redox stabilization, such as electron exchange between octahedral iron sites or deprotonation of hydroxyl groups in the structure. The resistance to complete oxidation of trioctahedral ferrous smectites and their full retention of iron demonstrates that transitions from anoxic to oxic conditions generate mixed-valence smectites rather than a mixture of new phases. Identifying the diagenetic products of mixed-valent trioctahedral smectites may provide an indicator in the rock record of past redox cycling. In conclusion, substantial portions of structural Fe(II) in trioctahedral smectites display slow abiotic oxidation kinetics and represent potential electron donors for both microaerophilic iron oxidizing and nitrate-reducing, iron-oxidizing microorganisms in altered mafic rocks and related settings.

Triple oxygen isotope compositions of globally distributed soil carbonates record widespread evaporation of soil waters

The stable isotopic composition of pedogenic carbonates is central to many studies of past climate and topography, providing a basis for our understanding of Earth's terrestrial history. A core assumption of many applications of oxygen isotope values (δ 18 O) of pedogenic carbonate is that they reflect the δ 18 O value of precipitation (rain/snow). Here, this assumption is violated if soil carbonates form in evaporated soil waters. In this work, we develop a means to identify evaporation in ancient soils using the triple oxygen isotope composition ( 16 O- 17 O- 18 O) of pedogenic carbonates.

Tarda and Tagish Lake: Samples from the same outer Solar System asteroid and implications for D- and P-type asteroids

Here, we report a comprehensive study of the ungrouped type 2 carbonaceous chondrite, Tarda, which fell in Morocco in 2020. This meteorite exhibits substantial similarities to Tagish Lake, Wisconsin Range 91600, and Meteorite Hills 00432, which are generally considered to have originated from a D-type asteroid(s). We constrain the compositions and petrologies of the materials present in a potential sample of a D-type asteroid by reporting the petrography, bulk chemical compositions, bulk H, C, N, Cr, and Ti isotopic compositions, reflectance spectra, and in situ chemical compositions of metals, sulfides, carbonates, and FeO-poor and FeO-rich chondrule silicates of Tarda. We also present new data for Tagish Lake. We then compare Tarda with the other Tagish Lake-like meteorites. Tarda and Tagish Lake appear to be from the same parent body, as demonstrated by their similar petrologies (modal abundances, chondrule sizes), mineral compositions, bulk chemical and isotopic compositions, and reflectance spectra. While the two other Tagish Lake-like meteorites, Wisconsin Range 91600 and Meteorite Hills 00432, show some affinities to Tagish Lake and Tarda, they also share similar characteristics to the Mighei-like carbonaceous (CM) chondrites, warranting further study. Similarities in reflectance spectra suggest that P-type asteroids 65 Cybele and 76 Freia are potential parent bodies of Tarda and the Tagish Lake-like meteorites, or at least have similar surface materials. Since upcoming spacecraft missions will spectrally survey D-type, P-type, and C-type Trojan asteroids (NASA's Lucy) and spectrally study and return samples from Mars' moon Phobos (JAXA's Martian Moons eXploration mission), which is spectrally similar to D-type asteroids, these meteorites are of substantial scientific interest. Furthermore, since Tarda closely spectrally matches P-type asteroids (but compositionally matches the D-type asteroid like Tagish Lake meteorite), P-type and D-type asteroids may represent fragments of the same or similar parent bodies.

Hydrothermal solution calorimetry in acidic aqueous solutions and revisiting the standard partial molal thermodynamic properties of Nd 3+ from 25 to 300 °C

The mobility of rare earth elements (REE) can be predicted in aqueous fluids using geochemical modeling but the accuracy of these models strongly depends on the availability of robust thermodynamic properties for the REE aqueous species. The REE 3+ aqua ions are important in the derivation of the formation constants of all the major REE complexes including the chloride, sulfate, and fluoride species which predominate in many hydrothermal-magmatic systems. However, the thermodynamic properties of the REE 3+ aqua ions are still commonly derived from the Helgeson-Kirkham-Flowers (HKF) equation of state parameters tabulated several decades ago. The standard state thermodynamic properties at reference conditions (25 °C and 1bar) and their extrapolations to high temperature need to be verified, if not revised, based on hydrothermal experiments. In this study, the enthalpy of solution was measured for synthetic Nd hydroxide from 25 to 150 ºC to retrieve the standard partial molal thermodynamic properties of Nd 3+ as a function of temperature. The experiments were conducted in aqueous perchloric acid based solutions with starting pH of 2 and varying ionic strength (0.01 to 0.09 mol/kg NaClO 4 ). The standard partial molal enthalpy of formation (Δ f H°) of Nd 3+ derived from the experimental study displays differences of up to 10 kJ/mol compared to the enthalpy values derived from the HKF equation of state in the studied temperature range. These inaccuracies are resolved by adjusting the standard partial molal Gibbs energy of formation (Δ f G°) of Nd 3+ at 25 °C and 1 bar from -672.0 to -679.7 kJ/mol. The heat capacity function (C p °) derived between 25 and 150 ºC can be described by: C p ° = a 0 + a 1 ·T + a 2 ·T -2 , with a 0 = 1256, a 1 = -2.68, a 2 = -55.56·10 6 and T in Kelvin. A set of recommended thermodynamic properties is provided for the Nd 3+ aqua ions and corrections are provided for the chloride and fluoride species to remain internally consistent with the experimentally derived properties. These results allow predicting accurately the solubility of monazite between 25 and 300 ºC. Before these corrections, the properties for the Nd 3+ aqua ions derived from the HKF parameters resulted in up to ~1.5 orders of magnitude lower monazite solubility than determined experimentally. Here, a revision of the REE +3 aqua ions properties is necessary to accurately predict the mobility of REE in hydrothermal acidic solutions.

Concurrent measurement of strain and chemical reaction rates in a calcite grain pack undergoing pressure solution: Evidence for surface-reaction controlled dissolution

Pressure solution is inferred to be a significant contributor to sediment compaction and lithification, especially in carbonate sediments. For a sediment deforming primarily by pressure solution, the compaction rate should be directly related to the rate of calcite dissolution, transport along grain contacts, and calcite reprecipitation. Previous experimental work has shown that there is evidence that deformation in wet calcite grain packs is consistent with control by pressure solution, but considerable ambiguity remains regarding the rate limiting mechanism. We present the results of laboratory compaction experiments designed to directly measure calcite dissolution and precipitation rates (recrystallization rates) concurrently with strain rate to test whether measured rates are consistent with predicted rates both in absolute magnitude and time evolution. Recrystallization rates are measured using trace element chemistry (Sr/Ca, Mg/Ca) and isotopes (87Sr/86Sr) of fluids flowing slowly through a compacting grain pack as it is being triaxially compressed. Imaging techniques are used to characterize the grain contacts and strain effects in the post-experiment grain pack. Our data show that calcite recrystallization rates calculated from all three geochemical parameters are in approximate agreement and that the rates closely track strain rate. The geochemically inferred rates are close to predicted rates in absolute magnitude. Uncertainty in grain contact dimensions makes distinguishing between surface reaction control and diffusion control difficult. Measured reaction rates decrease faster than predicted from standard pressure solution creep flow laws. This inconsistency may indicate that calcite dissolution rates at grain contacts are more complex, and more time-dependent, than suggested by geometric models designed to predict grain contact stresses.

Coupled feldspar dissolution and secondary mineral precipitation in batch systems: 6. Labradorite dissolution, calcite growth, and clay precipitation at 60 °C and pH 8.2–8.4

Here, we conducted experiments on concurrent labradorite dissolution, calcite precipitation, and clay precipitation in batch reactor systems and tracked reaction processes using multiple isotope tracers. Labradorite was chosen for its role as a major and reactive component in basalt; the experiments thus directly impact our understanding of CO 2 storage in basalt aquifers and enhanced rock weathering. We doped initial solutions with 29 Si, 43 Ca, and Ca 13 CO 3 (s). Experiments were conducted at 60 °C and pH ~ 8.3 for up to 840 h, with isotope ratios in the experimental aqueous solutions measured using MC-ICP-MS. Unidirectional rates of labradorite dissolution near equilibrium were approximately two orders of magnitude slower than far-from-equilibrium rates reported in the literature. Calcite growth occurred near equilibrium and the rates were limited by the labradorite dissolution rates. In the steady state phase, the interplay of these three heterogeneous reactions—labradorite dissolution, calcite growth, and clay precipitation—results in a coupled system that approaches a near-equilibrium state. The system does not reach true equilibrium because labradorite continues to dissolve, albeit at a much slower rate near equilibrium. The overall reaction can be approximated as, Na 0.4 Ca 0.6 Al 1.6 Si 2.4 O 8 + 0.6HCO 3 - + 1·.7H 2 O + 0.4H + → 0.4Na + + 0.6CaCO 3(s) + 0.5Al 2 Si 2 O 5 (OH) 4(s) + 0.6Al(OH) 4 - + 1.4SiO 2 o (aq). The experimental results show that using short-term far-from-equilibrium rate constants would lead to an overestimation of feldspar weathering rates at the Earth’s surface (e.g., basalt weathering and enhanced rock weathering) and CO 2 mineralization in basalt aquifers.

The solubility of La hydroxide and stability of La 3+ and La hydroxyl complexes at acidic to mildly acidic pH from 25 to 250 °C

The mobility of rare earth elements (REE) in natural hydrothermal systems can be assessed using geochemical modeling, which requires reliable thermodynamic data of relevant aqueous species. In this study, we evaluate the controls of pH and temperature on La speciation and the role of hydroxyl complexes in REE transport at hydrothermal conditions. Batch-type hydrothermal solubility experiments were conducted using synthetic La hydroxide powders equilibrated in perchloric acid-based aqueous solutions at temperatures between 150 and 250 °C and starting pH of 2 to 5. The La hydroxide solubility is retrograde with temperature and displays a strong pH dependence with a decrease in La concentrations from acidic to mildly acidic pH spanning between 3 and 5 orders of magnitude (e.g. log La molality of –2.5 to –7.2 at 250 °C). Thermodynamic optimizations using GEMSFITS allow to retrieve the standard partial molal Gibbs energies for the La 3+ aqua ion and the formation constants for the La hydroxyl species (i.e., LaOH 2+ , La(OH) 2 + , La(OH) 3 0 ) between 25 and 250 °C. A comparison between the experimentally derived thermodynamic properties with the calculated values from the Helgeson-Kirkham-Flowers equation of state parameters indicates an increased divergence with temperature. Discrepancies in standard partial molal Gibbs energies range between ~ 1 – 12 kJ/mol and result in a predicted La hydroxide solubility differing by up to 3 orders of magnitude at 250 °C. Speciation calculations indicate a higher stability of La 3+ and LaOH 2+ over the other La hydroxyl species in the studied pH range of 3.4 to 6. Here, the optimized thermodynamic properties for La aqueous species have important implications for modeling the solubility of REE minerals such as monazite and the mobility of REE in hydrothermal systems.

Reassessing the proposed “CY chondrites”: Evidence for multiple meteorite types and parent bodies from Cr-Ti-H-C-N isotopes and bulk elemental compositions

Here, we report a coordinated bulk Cr-Ti-H-C-N isotopic and compositional study of six carbonaceous chondrites from Antarctica that are often considered to be related and termed Yamato-like carbonaceous (CY) chondrites. These meteorites are known to have undergone extensive aqueous alteration followed by different degrees of thermal alteration, to be similar to one another in regard to mineralogy, and share affinities with both the Ivuna-like carbonaceous (CI) and Mighei-like carbonaceous (CM) chondrites. While mineralogically similar, a key difference among these samples is that chondrules have been found in some of these samples, but not in others. The aim of this study is to evaluate the relationship of these meteorites to one another, and investigate how they relate to the CI and CM chondrite groups. We find that with the addition of the isotopic compositions of these ‘CY’ chondrites, there is now a continuum of isotopic compositions among the carbonaceous chondrites. The CI chondrites are no longer separate in O isotopic compositions from the other carbonaceous chondrite groups in plots of Cr-O and Ti-O. We also find that the ‘CY’ chondrites represent two distinct populations, which correlate with their heating stage. However, the peak temperatures experienced by each population can only explain the differences in H and C isotopes and abundances and N abundances between samples, and cannot have caused the differences in N, Cr, and Ti isotopes, or all the volatile element depletions of the sample’s bulk compositions. Instead, we conclude that the compositional and isotopic data of these two populations correlate with their known chondrule abundances, indicating distinct precursors for each population. We find it most likely that these samples originate from two distinct asteroids, implying that among the six samples studied here, there are not five related samples to constitute a new meteorite group. The chondrule-free heating Stage III samples are most likely heated CI chondrites, while the chondrule-bearing heating Stage IV samples could be heated CM chondrites.

Stable isotope equilibria in the dihydrogen-water-methane-ethane-propane system. Part 1: Path-integral calculations with CCSD(T) quality potentials

Isotopic compositions of alkanes are typically assumed to be kinetically controlled, but recently is has been proposed that alkanes can isotopically equilibrate for both C and H isotopes during natural gas generation. Evaluation of this requires knowledge of the isotopic equilibrium between alkanes and other common hydrogen and carbon bearing species. Here, in this study, we calculate isotopic equilibria within and between gaseous dihydrogen (H 2 ), water (H 2 O), methane (CH 4 ), ethane (C 2 H 6 ) and propane (C 3 H 8 ), including isotope fractionation among molecules, clumped isotope effects, as well as among sites of propane (i.e., the site-specific isotope effects) from 0°C to 500°C using a path-integral method paired with high-level descriptions of molecular potentials and the diagonal correction to the Born Oppenheimer approximation. While path-integral calculations with high- level CCSD(T) potentials are available for the isotopic equilibria involving methane, the path-integral calculations for ethane and propane have only been performed based on lower-level descriptions of the molecular potentials. We analyze the relative importance of various approximations that are commonly employed when isotopic equilibria are evaluated. We find that clumped isotope effects can be calculated to the same accuracy using computationally inexpensive combination of the Bigeleisen-Mayer-Urey model with the molecular potential from density functional theory. In contrast, fractionation and site preferences of both deuterium and carbon-13 benefit from the use of the higher level CCSD(T) potentials and accounting for anharmonic effects. Additionally, for fractionation and site preference of deuterium corrections to Born-Oppenheimer approximation can also be important.

Temporal relationships among lunar crustal rocks

Temporal relationships among the three most common suites of lunar crustal rocks have been investigated by obtaining new high precision ages on Felsic/Alkali-suite Quartz monzodiorite Clast B from breccia 15405 and Magnesian-suite norite 78235/6/8/55/56 and comparing them to previously dated ferroan anorthosite sample 60025. The weighted average age of 4337.19 ± 0.49 Ma of 15405 Clast B is defined by zircon U-Pb and Pb-Pb ages as well as mineral isochron Sm-Nd and Nd-Nd ages. It is identical to the weighted average age for Apollo 17 norite 78235/6/8/55/56 of 4334.1 ± 3.5 Ma which is defined by Pb-Pb ages measured on baddeleyites in this investigation and less precise Pb-Pb and Sm-Nd ages reported in the literature. Both ages are ∼ 25 Ma younger than the weighted average of Sm-Nd and Pb-Pb ages reported in the literature on ferroan anorthosite 60025 of 4359.3 ± 2.3 Ma. The fact that ages of all three samples are defined by multiple U-Pb, Pb-Pb, Sm-Nd, and 142 Nd- 143 Nd chronometers provide confidence that they record the igneous crystallization history of the samples and do not represent disturbances or mixing lines with no temporal significance. Here, the extent to which these three ages represent broader scale magmatism is difficult to evaluate. Nevertheless, the age defined for 15405 Clast B, 78235/6/8/55/56, and 60025 are contemporaneous with the peak of ages observed in detrital zircons from the Apollo 12, 14, 15, and 17 landing sites (4340 ± 20 Ma), a Mg-suite Sm-Nd whole rock isochron defined by samples from Apollo 14, 15, 16, and 17 landing sites (4348 ± 25 Ma), and a Ferroan Anorthosite-suite Sm-Nd whole rock isochron defined by samples from the Apollo 15 and 16 landing sites (4354 ± 29 Ma). This implies that Ferroan Anorthosite-suite magmatism is temporally distinct and earlier than magmatism associated with the Mg-suite and the Felsic/Alkali-suite, as predicted by the lunar magma ocean model of lunar differentiation. The short 35 ± 10 Ma interval between primary ferroan anorthosite magmatism and secondary magmatism suggests that the lunar crust formed over a limited period of time. Although heat from decay of long-lived isotopes, large impacts, tidal heating associated with interactions between the Earth and Moon, and density driven overturn of the magma ocean have all been invoked to explain production of ancient secondary crustal magmatism, only tidal heating and cumulate overturn are consistent with the apparent short duration of secondary crustal magmatism and the great depth of crystallization implied for some Mg-suite samples. The initial ε 143 Nd values derived from the 15405 Clast B and 78238 Mg-suite norite isochrons, as well as a Mg-suite whole rock isochron are −0.23 ± 0.11, −0.27 ± 0.74, and −0.25 ± 0.09, respectively. They are identical within uncertainty indicating that Mg-suite and Felsic/Alkali-suite magmas were derived from materials that had the same time averaged Sm/Nd ratios since the formation of the solar system. This, combined with the contemporaneous nature of 15405 Clast B and 78235/6/8/55/56 Mg-suite norite, is consistent with evolution of both samples, and likely both magma suites, from a common source through closed system fractional crystallization or partial melting processes.

An experimental study of synthetic Hydroxybastnäsite-(La) solubility and speciation in carbonate bearing aqueous solutions at 175–250 °C

The transport and enrichment of rare earth element (REE) ore bodies are dependent on the stability of aqueous metal ligand complexes and the solubility of REE bearing minerals. REE ores are commonly associated with igneous systems having aqueous fluids with high carbonate concentrations and REE solubilities have been shown to be dependent on temperature and associate anion aqueous ligands present in solution. Furthermore, this work presents solubility experiments of hydroxybastnäsite-(La) at elevated temperatures in aqueous solutions of varying carbonate concentrations. At lower temperatures, hydroxybastnäsite-(La) solubility is controlled by neutral mono-carbonate LaCO 3 OH° but at higher temperatures and activities of carbonate species, charged di-carbonate La(CO 3 ) 2 - increases and predominates. This divergence, and the difference in solubility products of other hydroxybastnäsite-(REE) phases, provides a potential mechanism for REE fractionation in carbonate dominated aqueous solutions. To illustrate one such mechanism the solubility data of hydroxybastnäsite-(La) is compared with previously reported data of hydroxybastnäsite-(Nd) at elevated temperatures.

Triple oxygen and hydrogen stable isotope composition of hydroxyl water in Orgueil (CI-type) and Tagish Lake (C2-type) carbonaceous chondrites

The primitive carbonaceous chondrites are of interest to cosmochemical science because they contain relatively large amounts of ‘water’ (H 2 O and/or OH – ) within phyllosilicate minerals. This water is evidence for the accretion of ices by their parent planetesimals, and thus represents an archive of the isotopic compositions of H 2 O in the protoplanetary environments. Here, in this study, we used thermogravimetry-enabled laser spectroscopy (TGA-IRIS) analyses of the Orgueil and Tagish Lake meteorites to make δ 2 H, δ 18 O, and Δ′ 17 O measurements of the H 2 O and OH – contained in the different hydrous minerals that comprise each meteorite. In Orgueil, we measured mass-weighted averages of OH – in the saponite and serpentine phyllosilicate matrix to be δ 2 H = 192 ‰, δ 18 O = 1.5 ‰, which are unquestionably of extraterrestrial origin with Δ′ 17 O = 1.0 ‰. For Tagish Lake, analogous values of OH– in the saponite and serpentine phyllosilicate matrix are δ 2 H = 704 ‰, δ 18 O = 11.3 ‰, and are similarly unambiguously extraterrestrial with Δ′ 17 O = 0.82 ‰. We estimate that the parent H 2 O involved in aqueous alteration of Orgueil had δ 18 O value ≥ +23 ‰. In Orgueil, we interpret the phyllosilicate petrographic relationships, and the δ 18 O values of OH – in saponite and serpentine to indicate that saponite formed first, at a lower temperature by 35 to 53 °C than serpentine. This suggests that the Orgueil parent body experienced increasing temperature during the phase of active aqueous alteration (prograde) which set the δ 18 O OH values of the serpentine and saponite. In the case of Tagish Lake, serpentine formed at a lower temperature by 32 to 60 °C than saponite, for the simplest case with constant δ 18 O H2O values. If serpentine formed first, followed by saponite formation at 32 to 60 °C °C higher temperature, this suggests that Tagish Lake sample TL1 underwent prograde aqueous alteration as the parent body heated up. We find evidence that the parent H 2 O for Orgueil, Tagish Lake sample TL1, and Murchison (based on data from a previous study) may have had Δ′ 17 O values of >0.64 ‰.
