50 Mbps hardware development for Shuttle Ku-band communications

The performance of a 5-Mbps coded system developed for Shuttle Ku-band communications is described. The system consists of a rate 1/2, constraint length 7 convolutional encoder-decoder and soft decision symbol synchronizer; the system has been band-limited at the transmitted symbol rate. Five convolutional decoders are operated in parallel to permit operation at the required data rate. It is found that the multiplexed encoder-decoder system does not exhibit any observable coding gain degradation when the channel is limited to the symbol rate at baseband.

Some optimal partial-unit-memory codes

A class of time-invariant binary convolutional codes is defined, called partial-unit-memory codes. These codes are optimal in the sense of having maximum free distance for given values of R, k (the number of encoder inputs), and mu (the number of encoder memory cells). Optimal codes are given for rates R = 1/4, 1/3, 1/2, and 2/3, with mu not greater than 4 and k not greater than mu + 3, whenever such a code is better than previously known codes. An infinite class of optimal partial-unit-memory codes is also constructed based on equidistant block codes.

Fiber optic sensors for military, industrial and commercial applications

Four examples of specific fiber optic sensor system designs, each of which demonstrates a different optical modulation format, are described. The birefrigent temperature transducer illustrates direct digital signal modulation. The temperature/pressure dependent semiconductor filter illustrates high-pass optical wavelength signal encoding. The coupled polarized-mode transducer shows how a solid-state sensor can produce narrow-bandpass optical wavelength signal encoding. The luminescent temperature sensor illustrates a way to construct a solid state sensor in order to produce pulse width modulation of an optical signal.

A /31,15/ Reed-Solomon Code for large memory systems

This paper describes the encoding and the decoding of a (31,15) Reed-Solomon Code for multiple-burst error correction for large memory systems. The decoding procedure consists of four steps: (1) syndrome calculation, (2) error-location polynomial calculation, (3) error-location numbers calculation, and (4) error values calculation. The principal features of the design are the use of a hardware shift register for both high-speed encoding and syndrome calculation, and the use of a commercially available (31,15) decoder for decoding Steps 2, 3 and 4.

Fiber optic sensors for measuring angular position and rotational speed

Two optical sensors, a 360 deg rotary encoder and a tachometer, were built for operation with the light source and detectors located remotely from the sensors. The source and detectors were coupled to the passive sensing heads through 3.65 meter fiber optic cables. The rotary encoder and tachometer were subjected to limited environmental testing. They were installed on an air breathing engine during recent altitude tests. Over 100 hours of engine operation were accumulated without any failure of either device.

Carrier - Interference ratios for frequency sharing between satellite systems transmitting frequency modulated and digital television signals

As the data rates required for digitally encoded television are reduced, satellite systems employing the transmission of digitally encoded television will become attractive. It is likely that television transmitted in this format will be adjacent to or in the same frequency band as television transmissions in other modulation formats, so a knowledge of carrier to interference power ratios as a function of assessed picture quality will be required for frequency sharing between these different modulation formats. This paper presents the results of subjective and quantitative tests describing the results of interference to a particular digital television system from a frequency modulated (FM) television system, and for interference to an FM television system from a digital television system.

A study of high density bit transition requirements versus the effects on BCH error correcting coding

Several methods for increasing bit transition densities in a data stream are summarized, discussed in detail, and compared against constraints imposed by the 2 MHz data link of the space shuttle high rate multiplexer unit. These methods include use of alternate pulse code modulation waveforms, data stream modification by insertion, alternate bit inversion, differential encoding, error encoding, and use of bit scramblers. The psuedo-random cover sequence generator was chosen for application to the 2 MHz data link of the space shuttle high rate multiplexer unit. This method is fully analyzed and a design implementation proposed.

Algorithms for software development version control and change detection

Simple computer algorithms for processing source program and text data files in order to extract change detection, version control, version history, and current status information are described. These algorithms presuppose that it is possible to attach to each record of the source files a 6-character code, placed within delimiters that will cause the compiler, or other using program, to ignore this code field. The code contains a 2-character code for a character-by-character position-sensitive checksum of the record, another for the record number in the file, and a third for the data on which the encoding took place. Once the source file has been thus encoded, it is possible to detect the following transactions on the file since the most recent version coding; (1) addition of new records (having no version code), (2) modification of existing records, (3) deletion of a number of records, (4) movement and/or duplication of existing records, and (5) modification and duplication of records. In addition, it is possible to extract a version history of the number of records created or modified by date. A special file listing program is described which prints the file records without showing the version codes, but places a "change bar" at the right margin whenever a change is detected. The program also provides a list of changed pages and a version history.

Conceptual design for a universal Reed-Solomon decoder

An algorithm which enables one Reed-Solomon decoder to process other Reed-Solomon encoded data from a different code is presented. The sole requirement is that both codes have the same length, the same rate, and the same field of coefficients. It is pointed out that only very simple pre- and post-processing hardware is needed to resolve an encoder/decoder incompatibility and that no encoder modification is needed.

Symbol synchronization for the TDRSS decoder

Each 8 bits out of the Viterbi decoder correspond to one symbol of the R/S code. Synchronization must be maintained here so that each 8-bit symbol delivered to the R/S decoder corresponds to an 8-bit symbol from the R/S encoder. Lack of synchronization, would cause an error in almost every R/S symbol since even a - 1-bit sync slip shifts every bit in each 8-bit symbol by one position, therby confusing the mapping betweeen 8-bit sequences and symbols. The error correcting capability of the R/S code would be exceeded. Possible ways to correcting this condition include: (1) designing the R/S decoder to recognize the overload and shifting the output sequence of the inner decoder to establish a different sync state; (2) using the characteristics of the inner decoder to establish symbol synchronization for the outer code, with or without a deinterleaver and an interleaver; and (3) modifying the encoder to alternate periodically between two sets of generators.

Transfer Function Bounds for Partial-unit-memory Convolutional Codes Based on Reduced State Diagram

The performance of a coding system consisting of a convolutional encoder and a Viterbi decoder is analytically found by the well-known transfer function bounding technique. For the partial-unit-memory byte-oriented convolutional encoder with m sub 0 binary memory cells and (k sub 0 m sub 0) inputs, a state diagram of 2(K) (sub 0) was for the transfer function bound. A reduced state diagram of (2 (m sub 0) +1) is used for easy evaluation of transfer function bounds for partial-unit-memory codes.

Photographic memory: The storage and retrieval of data

The concept of density encoding digital data in a mass-storage computer peripheral is proposed. This concept requires that digital data be encoded as distinguishable density levels (DDLS) of the film to be used as the storage medium. These DDL's are then recorded on the film in relatively large pixels. Retrieval of the data would be accomplished by scanning the photographic record using a relatively small aperture. Multiplexing of the pixels is used to store data of a range greater than the number of DDL's supportable by the film in question. Although a cartographic application is used as an example for the photographic storage of data, any digital data can be stored in a like manner. When the data is inherently spatially-distributed, the aptness of the proposed scheme is even more evident. In such a case, human-readability is an advantage which can be added to those mentioned earlier: speed of acquisition, ease of implementation, and cost effectiveness.

Memory-based parallel data output controller

A memory-based parallel data output controller employs associative memories and memory mapping to decommutate multiple channels of telemetry data. The output controller contains a random access memory (RAM) which has at least as many address locations as there are channels. A word counter addresses the RAM which provides as it outputs an encoded peripheral device number and a MSB/LSB-first flag. The encoded device number and a bit counter address a second RAM which contains START and STOP flags to pick out the required bits from the specified word number. The LSB/MSB, START and STOP flags, along with the serial input digital data go to a control block which selectively fills a shift register used to drive the parallel data output bus.

On instruction sets and their formats

Central to instruction set design is the issue of the instruction format. Some common format encoding techniques are discussed, and a method of representing high-level language parse trees by means of formats that cover successively larger portions of a tree is introduced. Variations are introduced on the method that represent directed acyclic graphs as well as simple parse trees, and that encode constants in a special fashion. For a particular representation, the number of times each format is executed to run a sample program to completion is measured.

CID-720 aircraft high-environment flight instrumentation system

The high-environment flight instrumentation system was designed to acquire Langley's structural response data during the full scale transport-controlled impact demonstration test. There was only one opportunity for data acquisition. Thus, a high reliability and crashworthy design approach was implemented. The approach featured multi-level redundancy and a vigorous quality assurance testing program. Complying with an accelerated schedule, the instrumentation system was developed, tested and shipped within 18 months to Dryden Flight Research Facility. The flight instrumentation system consists of two autonomous data systems, DAS #1 and #2, and an excellent checkout subsystem. Each data system is partitioned into four pallets. The system was designed to operate on manned and unmanned flights. There are 176 data channels per data system. These channels are sequentially sampled and encoded into 1 megabit/sec pulse code modulation (PCM) data signal. To increase the probability of success, a special PCM distribution subsystem was developed. This subsystem distributes the PCM signal to two transmitters, one delay memory, and eight recorder tracks. The data on four of these trackes was digitally delayed approximately 300 msec to maximize data acquisition during impact. Therefore each data system's data is redundantly recorded onboard and on the ground. There are two time code generators. Parallel time from each is encoded into both data systems. Serial time from each is redundantly recorded on both onboard recorders. Instrumentation power is independent of aircraft power and self-contained.

Entrainment, transport and concentration of meteorites in polar ice sheets

Glaciers and ice sheets act as slow-moving conveyancing systems for material added to both their upper and lower surfaces. Because the transit time for most materials is extremely long the ice acts as a major global storage facility. The effects of horizontal and vertical motions on the flow patterns of Antarctic ice sheets are summarized. The determination of the source areas of meteorites and their transport paths is a problem of central importance since it relates not only directly to concentration mechanisms but also to the wider issues in glaciology and meteorites. The ice and snow into which a meteorite falls, and which moves with it to the concentration area, encodes information about the infall area. The principle environmental conditions being former elevation, temperature (also related to elevation), and age of the ice. This encoded information could be used to identify the infall area.

Active plasma release experiments

A pulse code modulator (PCM) encoder capable of storing data onboard into the mass memory in the encoder at up to 12 megabits per second was designed and constructed. This telemetry system was programed for two successful flights. All parts of the electronic system functioned perfectly during both previous flights and the detectors performed perfectly. However, in the first flight in Pokerflat, Alaska, an electron arm did not deploy for reasons as yet unkown. The ion arm deployed perfectly and good data was acquired.

Optimal block cosine transform image coding for noisy channels

The two dimensional block transform coding scheme based on the discrete cosine transform was studied extensively for image coding applications. While this scheme has proven to be efficient in the absence of channel errors, its performance degrades rapidly over noisy channels. A method is presented for the joint source channel coding optimization of a scheme based on the 2-D block cosine transform when the output of the encoder is to be transmitted via a memoryless design of the quantizers used for encoding the transform coefficients. This algorithm produces a set of locally optimum quantizers and the corresponding binary code assignment for the assumed transform coefficient statistics. To determine the optimum bit assignment among the transform coefficients, an algorithm was used based on the steepest descent method, which under certain convexity conditions on the performance of the channel optimized quantizers, yields the optimal bit allocation. Comprehensive simulation results for the performance of this locally optimum system over noisy channels were obtained and appropriate comparisons against a reference system designed for no channel error were rendered.
