The Fiber Distributed Data Interface (FDDI) high-speed token-ring protocol provides support for two classes of service: synchronous, to support applications which require deterministic access to the channel, and asynchronous, to support applications which do not have such stringent response-time requirements. The purpose of this paper is to determine how to set ring parameters to support synchronous traffic most efficiently. Both theoretical results and results obtained from a simulation study are presented.
The Galileo spacecraft was launched from the Space Shuttle in October 1989, using a two-stage inertial upper stage. The trajectory included flybys of Venus and earth for gravity assists. The mission duration increased to a total of 8 years rather than the original 4.5 years. The major impact of this new mission plan was on the thermal control design. A viable design was achieved, with one major attitude control constraint: the spacecraft antenna boresight must be pointed to within 14 deg of the sun whenever the spacecrat is within 1 AU of the sun, even in the presence of faults. Changes to hardware, software and operations strategies had to be made to handle the new and longer mission.
A computational study has been made of transient heat transfer and fluid flow of an axisymmetric two-layer gas-and-liquid system heated from above by a small hot spot (e.g., a hot wire or pilot flame) located close to the liquid surface. The gas phase is unconfined above the liquid pool. The effects of varying gravity level (0.0001 to 1 gn), liquid pool height, and heater height are investigated. Thermocapillary convection induced by the nonuniform heating of the liquid surface combines with buoyancy forces to affect the heat transfer and the transport of fuel vapor toward the heat source. At reduced gravity, gas-phase conduction is comparable to the incident radiation at the liquid surface, whereas at 1 gn, buoyant convection carries the heat upward from the heat source and, therefore, the liquid is heated primarily by radiation.
The study proposes a ground-remote telerobot control architecture which could be used for control of Space Station Freedom manipulators. The architecture provides two local-site operator control stations representing potential earth-based and remote Space Station-based operator control stations. A unified control system at the remote site provides autonomous, shared, and teleoperation control for single-and dual-arm task execution. An operational laboratory system which demonstrates the feasibility of various technologies in the proposed architecture, including teleoperation, shared control, and supervised autonomy, is described. Enhancements to the system currently under development, including remote site implementation in Ada, integration and control of a redundant 7-DOF manipulator, and local site advanced operator aids, are also described.
