Application of optical correlation techniques to particle imaging velocimetry

Pulsed laser sheet velocimetry yields nonintrusive measurements of velocity vectors across an extended 2-dimensional region of the flow field. The application of optical correlation techniques to the analysis of multiple exposure laser light sheet photographs can reduce and/or simplify the data reduction time and hardware. Here, Matched Spatial Filters (MSF) are used in a pattern recognition system. Usually MSFs are used to identify the assembly line parts. In this application, the MSFs are used to identify the iso-velocity vector contours in the flow. The patterns to be recognized are the recorded particle images in a pulsed laser light sheet photograph. Measurement of the direction of the partical image displacements between exposures yields the velocity vector. The particle image exposure sequence is designed such that the velocity vector direction is determined unambiguously. A global analysis technique is used in comparison to the more common particle tracking algorithms and Young's fringe analysis technique.

Two-color method for optical astrometry - Theory and preliminary measurements with the Mark III stellar interferometer

The two-color method for interferometric astrometry provides a means of reducing the error in a stellar position measurement attributable to atmospheric turbulence. The primary limitation of the method is shown to be turbulent water vapor fluctuations. Secondary atmospheric effects caused by diffraction from small refractive-index inhomogeneities and differential refraction for the observation of stars away from zenith are shown to introduce errors that behave as white noise and which should not be significant. Other potential error sources due to photon noise, systematic instrumental effects, and imperfect data reduction are also considered. The improvement in accuracy possible with the two-color method is estimated as a factor of 5-10 over the corresponding one-color measurement. Some preliminary two-color measurements with the Mark III stellar interferometer at Mt. Wilson are presented, which demonstrate a factor of about 5 reduction in the amplitude of the atmospheric fluctuations in a stellar position measurement.

Mach 2 combustion characteristics of hydrogen/hydrocarbon fuel mixtures

The combustion of H2/CH4 and H2/C2H4 mixtures containing 10-70 vol pct hydrocarbon at cumbustor inlet Mach number 2 and temperatures 2000-4000 R is investigated experimentally, applying direct-connect test hardware and techniques similar to those described by Diskin and Northam (1987) in the facilities of the NASA Langley Hypersonic Propulsion Branch. The experimental setup, procedures, and data-reduction methods are described; and the results are presented in extensive tables and graphs and characterized in detail. Fuel type and mixture are found to have little effect on the wall heating rate measured near the combustor exit, but H2/C2H4 is shown to burn much more efficiently than H2/CH4, with no pilot-off blowout at equivalence ratios greater than 0.5. It is suggested that H2/hydrocarbon mixtures are feasible fuels (at least in terms of combustion efficiency) for scramjet SSTO vehicles operating at freestream Mach numbers above 4.

Operation of a multi-year, multi-agency project

Organizational and technological aspects of the operation by NASA and ESA of the IUE satellite observatory since its launch in 1978 are discussed. Topics addressed include the division of responsibilities among the ground stations, the IUE orbit and its evolution, the IUE spacecraft, normal operations (proposal selection and observation planning, shift handover, and spacecraft operations), and a typical observation (target identification and acquisition, telescope focus, spectrograph modes, camera operations, calibration, and data reduction). Consideration is given to constraints on IUE operation due to the sun-earth-moon configuration (eclipses), spacecraft power, radiation, temperature, and momentum-wheel speed; problems encountered with gyros, onboard computers, the fine sun sensor, and cameras; and the reliable high-efficiency overall performance of the IUE. Diagrams, drawings, and graphs are provided.

Ultraviolet spectroscopy of the 'jetlike' condensations of NGC 4151

The spectrometers aboard the IUE are used to obtain UV spectroscopy of the jetlike condensations seen extending 18 arcsec from the nucleus of the nearby Seyfert 1 galaxy NGC 4151. New data reduction techniques are used to detect, delineate, and measure weak nebular emission in IUE spectra. Spatially resolved extended emission is seen in both semiforbidden C III 1909 A and C IV 1549 A. The deduced integrated fluxes in the jet are 10 to the 14th and 4 x 10 to the 14th ergs/sq cm/s for C III and C IV, respectively. The observed fluxes are compared with predictions based upon a central source photoionization model. The implied high C IV/C III flux ratio is shown to be inconsistent with this model and suggests an additional source of ionization for the jet.

V482 Cygni - An R Coronae Borealis star in a quadruple system

Observations of the R CrB variable star V482 Cyg, obtained with the University of Rochester 32 x 32 InSb array camera at the NASA IR Telescope Facility on Mauna Kea on August 20, 1984, are reported. The data-reduction and analysis procedures are described in detail, and the results are presented in tables and maps. V482 Cyg is shown to be a member of a quadruple system or perhaps a small obscured cluster. Parameters determined include distance 1.7 kpc, circumstellar-shell temperature 800 K, and absolute magnitude M(V) = -2.8.

Holocinematographic velocimeter for measuring time-dependent, three-dimensional flows

Two simulatneous, orthogonal-axis holographic movies are made of tracer particles in a low-speed water tunnel to determine the time-dependent, three-dimensional velocity field. This instrument is called a Holocinematographic Velocimeter (HCV). The holographic movies are reduced to the velocity field with an automatic data reduction system. This permits the reduction of large numbers of holograms (time steps) in a reasonable amount of time. The current version of the HCV, built for proof-of-concept tests, uses low-frame rate holographic cameras and a prototype of a new type of water tunnel. This water tunnel is a unique low-disturbance facility which has minimal wall effects on the flow. This paper presents the first flow field examined by the HCV, the two-dimensional von Karman vortex street downstream of an unswept circular cylinder. Key factors in the HCV are flow speed, spatial and temporal resolution required, measurement volume, film transport speed, and laser pulse length. The interactions between these factors are discussed.

Microgravity research applications of interferometry to heat and mass transfer

Major space flight experiments which have used interferometric measurement as a major support system are described together with similar ground-based research. Space experiments include those flown on Spacelab 3 ad on the D-1 mission. Included in the ground-based experiments are aircraft studies, Spacelab 3 data reduction and evaluation, and supportive laboratory hardware development. It is shown that optical measurement techniques are crucial to microgravity research.

Compilation of methods in orbital mechanics and solar geometry

This paper contains a collection of computational algorithms for determining geocentric ephemerides of Earth satellites, useful for both mission planning and data reduction applications. Special emphasis is placed on the computation of sidereal time, and on the determination of the geocentric coordinate of the center of the Sun, all to the accuracy found in the Astronomical Almanac. The report is completely self-contained in that no requirement is placed on any external source of information, and hence, these methods are ideal for computer application.

Ultraviolet observations of selected astronomical sources

The results of the 9th and 10th IUE episode programs listed are summarized. Observations and basic data reductions were completed for 4 extragalactic programs which were allocated a total of 9 US1 shifts, and 2 stellar investigations which used 10 US2 shifts. Use was made of the Goddard RDAF to obtain better signal to noise ratio spectra using the Gaussian extraction routines. Highlights include the first IUE observations of H1821+643, the second brightest quasar in the sky, and the discovery of accretion disk emission line profiles in the elliptical Seyfert galaxy Arp 102B. Both of these observations were accompanied by nearly simultaneous optical spectrophotometry. As a result of the stellar programs, large amplitude variability associated with the rotation period of the Ap stars 78 Vir and 53 Cam was found.

Infrared astronomical satellite (IRAS) catalogs and atlases. Volume 7: The small scale structure catalog

The Infrared Astronomical Satellite (IRAS) was launched January 26, 1983. During its 300-day mission, it surveyed over 96 pct of the celestial sphere at four infrared wavelengths, centered approximately at 12, 25, 60, and 100 microns. Volume 1 describes the instrument, the mission, and the data reduction process. Volumes 2 through 6 present the observations of the approximately 245,000 individual point sources detected by IRAS; each volume gives sources within a specified range of declination. Volume 7 gives the observations of the approximately 16,000 sources spatially resolved by IRAS and smaller than 8'. This is Volume 7, The Small Scale Structure Catalog.

Laser transit anemometer software development program

Algorithms were developed for the extraction of two components of mean velocity, standard deviation, and the associated correlation coefficient from laser transit anemometry (LTA) data ensembles. The solution method is based on an assumed two-dimensional Gaussian probability density function (PDF) model of the flow field under investigation. The procedure consists of transforming the data ensembles from the data acquisition domain (consisting of time and angle information) to the velocity space domain (consisting of velocity component information). The mean velocity results are obtained from the data ensemble centroid. Through a least squares fitting of the transformed data to an ellipse representing the intersection of a plane with the PDF, the standard deviations and correlation coefficient are obtained. A data set simulation method is presented to test the data reduction process. Results of using the simulation system with a limited test matrix of input values is also given.

Flow boiling with enhancement devices for cold plate coolant channel design

A research program to study the effect of enhancement devices on flow boiling heat transfer in coolant channels, which are heated either from the top side or uniformly, is discussed. Freon 11 is the working fluid involved. The specific objectives are: (1) examine the variations in both the mean and local (axial and circumferential) heat transfer coefficients for a circular coolant channel with either smooth walls or with both a twisted tape and spiral finned walls, (2) examine the effect channel diameter (and the length-to-diameter aspect ratio) variations for the smooth wall channel, and (3) develop an improved data reduction analysis.

Electron spectroscopy for chemical analysis: Sample analysis

Exposure conditions in atomic oxygen (ESCA) was performed on an SSL-100/206 Small Spot Spectrometer. All data were taken with the use of a low voltage electron flood gun and a charge neutralization screen to minimize charging effects on the data. The X-ray spot size and electron flood gun voltage used are recorded on the individual spectra as are the instrumental resolutions. Two types of spectra were obtained for each specimen: (1) general surveys, and (2) high resolution spectra. The two types of data reduction performed are: (1) semiquantitative compositional analysis, and (2) peak fitting. The materials analyzed are: (1) kapton 4, 5, and 6, (2) HDPE 19, 20, and 21, and (3) PVDF 4, 5, and 6.
