Workflow for Process Automation of Soil Gas Results from an Automated Soil Gas-Sampling System for Application in Carbon Storage Projects

Conference presentation at Geoconvention, Calgary, Alberta, Canada, May 12–14, 2025. The Energy & Environmental Research Center (EERC) developed an automated workflow for processing soil gas measurements collected from the automated soil gas-sampling systems deployed across the project site. Raw soil gas measurements are collected from each station every 4 hours and automatically uploaded to a cloud database. The workflow begins by writing code to download the data to a workstation automatically, then the data are published to an online dashboard that visualizes the measurements in time-series plots and a process-based decision-making framework. This automated workflow accelerates the time from data acquisition to decision-making. It supports carbon storage project operators by preparing and delivering a live, standardized dataset for quick analysis and source attribution to provide assurance of containment and overall permit compliance.

Recent Collaborations and Innovations to Demonstrate Next-Generation Techniques for Monitoring Subsurface Carbon Storage

World Carbon Capture, Utilization, and Storage (CCUS) Conference, Bergen, Norway, September 1–4, 2025. This talk provides a high-level overview of many novel and sustainable carbon storage-monitoring methods to accelerate the deployment of CCUS technologies at future CCUS sites across the United States. The Energy & Environmental Research Center’s work impacts the general CCUS industry by providing novel low-impact methods for tracking the injected plume’s migration and more autonomous data collection and processing techniques for performing assurance monitoring. Specifically, the results benefit 1) CCUS community members through knowledge sharing of lessons learned; 2) CCUS operators through commercialization of additional methods, including improvements to workflows and simplification of fieldwork; and 3) CCUS project stakeholders through implementation of low-impact and more autonomous monitoring solutions.

Introduction to Digital Image Correlation (DIC) with annotated bibliography

Digital Image Correlation (DIC) is “a non-contact means of measuring motion and deformation using digital images of the object of interest”, capable of full-field measurements over large areas. Getting started in DIC can be difficult, since there are many different techniques, and the body of literature on DIC is extensive. IEEE Xplore alone lists nearly 11,000 references, including magazines, conference proceedings, journal articles, books, etc. A Google search returns around 145 million results. The intent of this annotated bibliography is to provide an entry point for beginners and to collect references that may be useful to more advanced practitioners.

Pathways to Improved Representation in Advanced NucleAr science (PIRANA)

This document presents the final technical report for Pathways to Improved Representation in Advanced NucleAr Science (PIRANA), supported by the U.S. Department of Energy Office of Science (Office of Nuclear Physics) under Award No. DE-SC0024677 through the Reaching a New Energy Sciences Workforce (RENEW) initiative. The project launched in Fall 2023 at Skyline College in San Bruno, California, a federally recognized Minority Serving Institution (MSI) and the only community college participating in the nEXO collaboration. Through this partnership, Skyline College established an accessible and rigorous research environment for its students. Over the course of the project, 10 student trainees made meaningful contributions to nEXO detector R&D and to activities aimed at expanding student engagement in advanced nuclear science. An additional 24 students completed the Summer Introduction to Research and Experimentation in Nuclear physics (SIREN), a three-week program developed from the training materials created for the nEXO trainees. All participating students engaged in opportunities to present their work locally and at national conferences, take part in public outreach, and contribute to a range of academic activities across campus. Collectively, these efforts extended the impact of the project throughout the wider Skyline College community.

Support of the US-Japan Binational Photosynthesis Workshop

This workshop was held over the course of 3 days in early November of 2023 on the campus of Arizona State University. Its primary goal was to facilitate interaction and productive collaboration between scientists based in Japan and the U.S. who work on the mechanisms of energy transduction carried out by photosynthetic organisms. Due to boundaries of geography and culture, communication and collaboration between US and Japanese scientists working in the field has not always been optimal. The UJBPW overcame these boundaries by holding a relatively small conference where people could discuss results and ideas freely. The emphasis was on scientific diversity and promotion of younger scientists and it gave graduate students the opportunity to meet the people whose papers they have been reading and perhaps find a postdoctoral position, which is a great way to forge scientific links across national boundaries.

Rapid T cell engineering to counter emerging threats (Full Technical Report)

Instead of genetic engineering, we sought to determine if a rapid method of membrane protein delivery could generate functional CAR-T cells in a rapid, safer, cost-effective manner. Using cell free protein synthesis, we generated CAR proteins embedded in a nanodisc, and thus effectively solubilized the protein. We demonstrated the first functional CAR proteins outside of a cellular context. We next tested uptake into immune cells and found extremely high uptake into T cells and multiple other populations of immune cells. We found some evidence of cytotoxicity in vitro conferred by the nanodisc delivered protein.

PowerAmerica (Final Technical Report)

The U.S. Department of Energy’s Advanced Manufacturing Office (predecessor to AMMTO) established PowerAmerica in December 2014 to develop and accelerate the adoption of wide bandgap (WBG) semiconductor chips and power electronics in manufacturing. The objective was to spark early commercialization of energy efficient products; educate and train the workforce; create high-tech jobs; and nurture the growth of the U.S. WBG semiconductor manufacturing industry. PowerAmerica isled by North Carolina State University by way of a five-year, $140M cooperative agreement with DoE. This private-public partnership with DoE includes member companies ranging from startups and small-medium enterprises to large system integrators, world-class universities, and national labs. The WBG power electronic ecosystem formed by our diverse membership is focused on using advanced manufacturing to 1) lower the cost of silicon carbide and gallium nitride semiconductor devices to be comparable to silicon devices; 2) demonstrate the system benefits and energy efficiency advantages of WBG semiconductor power electronics through system demonstrations that validate their effectiveness; and 3) build an education pipeline for a skilled workforce to meet the future demand for emerging WBG semiconductor markets — and enhance U.S. economic competitiveness globally. PowerAmerica was initially funded in six budget periods, each lasting 12 to 18 months. By the end of Budget Period 6 (August 2023), PowerAmerica had achieved its major objectives in technology development, semiconductor device cost reduction, ecosystem growth and engagement, and education and workforce development. Through strategic foundry investments, we helped to establish the first U.S. SiC foundry (X-FAB) and supported a lab (Microchip) to start SiC volume production. We’ve helped bring together companies from different parts of the supply chain, resulting in several successful new partnerships and business relationships. Through projects with some of the largest manufacturers of energy-intensive equipment in the U.S. — John Deere, GE, United Technologies, Raytheon, Carrier, Toshiba, and others — we have successfully demonstrated the energy and system benefits of WBG technology. We have also harnessed the unique capabilities and facilities of national labs — the Naval Research Laboratory, National Renewable Energy Laboratory, and Argonne National Laboratory — to help solve challenging technical problems for industry. Thanks to our many webinars, tutorials, annual events, and presence at major energy and electronics conferences around the world, the PowerAmerica name has become synonymous with WBG technology advancement. The commercial interest in WBG technology is higher than ever; companies and governments around the world have announced hundreds of millions of dollarsin future investment to build capacity — and compete with silicon in many markets and applications. We have trained hundreds of engineering students, from universities across the U.S., through hands-on projects and WBG coursework. Working professionals have also benefited through the years from our many targeted short courses, tutorials, and technical webinars. In short, PowerAmerica has made great strides in each of our key objectives, and the organization has been operating without government or NC State
