An Open-Access Repository of Synchrophasor Data Quality Examples: Curation and Example Applications

Synchrophasor measurements are critical in providing wide-area situational awareness to power system operators. However, data artifacts may be introduced due to various issues such as loss of communication, loss of GPS signal, internal clock error, and vendor-specific implementation of phasor estimation algorithms. Tools designed to provide actionable insights from synchrophasor data, hence, must be designed to be robust to these data quality issues. In this work, two years of synchrophasor data sourced from multiple electric utilities in the United States were analyzed to identify examples of data quality problems. These examples were then labeled and published in the Grid Event Signature Library, a publicly available repository of power system measurements hosted by the Oak Ridge National Laboratory. This paper describes the data curation process, and illustrates two application use cases where the dataset can be valuable to the research community. In the first use case, a random forest classifier is trained to distinguish power system disturbance signatures from data anomalies introduced in synchrophasor measurements due to clock errors. The second use case studies the impact of data quality issues on an example synchrophasor application (specifically, event start time determination). The choice of data quality problems investigated is informed by the examples in the repository curated in this work.

Adaptive PID Gain Scheduling Control for Hydropower Turbine Using Neural CDE and Stochastic Distribution Shaping

This paper introduces a gain-scheduling PID controller design strategy for hydroturbine frequency control mode. This scheme first uses real data to learn the nonlinear dynamics of the hydroturbine using neural controlled differential equations and then perturbs the obtained nonlinear system at different equilibrium points, based on which a static output feedback adaptive dynamic programming algorithm is then used to optimize the PID gains for each equilibrium point. Moreover, a continuous-time version of stochastic distribution control is proposed to further fine-tune the optimized PID gains. Finally, the controller is obtained by implementing linear interpolation between the optimized PID control gains. The simulation results show that the proposed gain-scheduling PID controller can control a larger range of operation points compared with the given fixed PID controller and the baseline method. Compared with the given fixed PID controller, the proposed gain-scheduling PID controller can regulate hydroturbine frequency against disturbances induced by power-load variation with over 50% less overshoot for some operation points.

Big Data Analytic for Cascading Failure Analysis

With the challenges of increased grid dynamics and more variability of power generation from renewable energy sources, rapidly increasing complexity in the grid model, and abundant data from measurements and simulations, the requirements for computational analysis have also increased dramatically. Power system operators and engineers need to analyze more scenarios, extract meaningful information from a larger set of data, and respond more quickly when faced with these new challenges for large-scale applications, such as contingency analysis. This paper proposes a novel big data analysis approach for power system cascading analysis, prevention, and remediation. The developed techniques will be capable of cascading analysis, better assessment of the system’s vulnerability level, as well as proposing potential remediation. Case studies using IEEE 118-bus system and a 500-bus system, with a comparison against a commercial tool, validate the advantages of the developed big data approach: accurate prediction, and more importantly, faster and effective correction actions. The developed techniques could be further used for other power system applications.

Comparison of Simulation of Dual-Active Bridge in Different Simulators and Using Different Simulation Methods

The accuracy of states measured from simulation of a dual-active bridge (DAB) converter with an open-loop controller has been used for comparing simulation software and algorithms. The accuracy of the measured states is sensitive to simulation settings and parameters chosen. In this paper, the simulation of the DAB converter with open-loop control is run in the MATLAB/Simscape Electrical, PLECS, and PSCAD software environments, with various simulation settings. The simulation results are also compared with a new simulation algorithm proposed for DAB simulations. Different simulation settings are evaluated, including different solver types, operating conditions, and the on-state resistance values of the MOSFET switches. The simulation results are compared with the theoretical calculations. It is shown that unexpected divergence and DC offset may occur in some cases. This paper provides guidelines to simulate the DAB converter with open-loop control.

Impact of the Transformer Magnetizing Inductance on the Performance of the Dual-Active Bridge Converter

The magnetizing inductance of the high-frequency transformer in the dual-active bridge (DAB) converter is usually assumed to be much larger than its leakage inductance, thereby the magnetizing current can be negligible. However, ignoring the magnetizing current will lead to an error in the DAB converter design process. This paper analyzes the operation and performance of the DAB converter for a general case in which the transformer magnetizing inductance is taken into consideration. The analysis shows that the magnetizing inductance impacts the soft-switching region, the power transfer capability, and the leakage inductor current. A simulation case study is provided to verify the analysis. A DAB converter prototype is built to experimentally validate the analysis as well.

Data optimization for large batch distributed training of deep neural networks

Distributed training in deep learning (DL) is common practice as data and models grow. The current practice for distributed training of deep neural networks faces the challenges of communication bottlenecks when operating at scale, and model accuracy deterioration with an increase in global batch size. Present solutions focus on improving message exchange efficiency as well as implementing techniques to tweak batch sizes and models in the training process. The loss of training accuracy typically happens because the loss function gets trapped in a local minima. We observe that the loss landscape minimization is shaped by both the model and training data and propose a data optimization approach that utilizes machine learning to implicitly smooth out the loss landscape resulting in fewer local minima. Our approach filters out data points which are less important to feature learning, enabling us to speed up the training of models on larger batch sizes to improved accuracy.

Driver Distraction Behavior Detection using a Vision Transformer Model based on Transfer Learning Strategy

Driver distraction behavior is one of the critical factors in traffic accidents. Thus, advanced driver state detection system has become the focus in the field of intelligent vehicle. However, in practical applications, insufficient samples of driving distraction behaviors bring great challenges to training a personalized behavior distraction detection model for a specific driver. To this end, a novel transformer model based on a transfer learning strategy is proposed in this paper to accurately recognize driver distraction behavior. Inspired by the effect of the transformer network in visual recognition, we firstly present a transformer behavior distraction detection system to identify the behavior categories that cause driver distraction. Then, for the specific driving dataset in practical application scenarios, the transfer learning strategy is introduced into the driver distraction detection model to further train the general transformer network. The effectiveness of the transformer based on the transfer learning strategy is validated compared with other traditional deep learning methods. The results show that the proposed detection method has better generalization ability and higher accuracy.

Mitigating Catastrophic Forgetting in Deep Learning in a Streaming Setting Using Historical Summary

Recent advancements in scientific equipment and the adaptation of electronics and the Internet of Things (IoT) in our everyday lives resulted in large and complex data production at a high rate. Making meaningful and timely knowledge discovery at a modest cost from this big data is difficult for computing power and storage limitations. Training deep learning models incrementally in a streaming setting can help us with overcoming these limitations. However, in a well-known phenomenon named catastrophic forgetting, incrementally trained models increasingly perform poorly on the past data. To mitigate catastrophic forgetting in training in a streaming setting, we propose constructing a historical summary over time and use the summary with newly arrived data during incremental training. We propose various data summarization techniques such as random sampling, micro clustering, coreset computation, and Auto Encoders to counteract catastrophic forgetting. We built a pipeline for incremental training with a historical summary for training deep learning models for streaming data. We demonstrate the effectiveness of historical summary in mitigating catastrophic forgetting using three case studies involving three different deep learning applications: an Artificial Neural Network (ANN) for classification task on MNIST dataset, a language model (RNN-LM) on the WikiText2 dataset, and a Convolutional Neural Network (CNN), ResNet50 to classify the ImageNet dataset. Through the training of the models, we observe that catastrophic forgetting is evident in ANN and CNN but not in an RNN. For the first task, our method recovers up to 47.9% lost accuracy due to catastrophic forgetting. For the third task, the historical summary recovers classification accuracy by up to 25%. For the second task, though there is not proof of catastrophic forgetting, the training performance (PPL) improves by up to 26% with historical summary.

PLC-based Impedance Measurement and Current Injection Response Analysis

Studying and mitigating the vulnerabilities of Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs) to electromagnetic pulse is important for the reliability of the power system. In this paper, an effective impedance measurement scheme is proposed to estimate the susceptibility of PLCs to an electromagnetic pulse. The equivalent non-uniform transmission line model is established to eliminate the impact of the fixture in the de-embedding process. Based on the measured impedance, the equivalent circuit is established to calculate the response of the device when subjected to the electromagnetic pulse. The voltage and current responses of different interfaces are compared utilizing the developed pulse Current Injection (CI) method. Finally, the impedance measurement scheme is verified through testing using three measuring instruments. And the CI simulation experiments reveal the characteristics and susceptibilities of different PLCs interfaces, indicating that some protection measures are required for the reliable operation of PLC.

Rapid Event Detection via Synchro-Waveform Based Temporal Attention Network in Distributed Grid

Compared with the information collected from phasor measurement units, synchro-waveforms contain high-fidelity disturbances of the grid, which can be a granular and authentic representation of measurements in the modern power system. However, the dynamic changing morphology makes it challenging to effectively capture various disturbance information from the synchro-waveforms. To tackle this issue, this paper proposes a Synchro-waveform based Temporal Attention (STA) network to achieve rapid event detection. First, a multi-scenario distributed model with renewable integration is established to generate synchro-waveforms under various uncertainties. Then, three typical temporal features are extracted directly from the synchro-waveform measurements. Additionally, the lightweight STA network is deployed to identify the most common event types in renewable energy systems via the self-attention based vision transformer module. The results from simulated experiments demonstrate that the proposed approach can achieve rapid and real-time detection within 0.81 ms and over 96.27 % accuracy.

Establishing Models for Digital Twin of Hydropower Systems Using Probability Density Function Shaping

This paper introduces a digital twin modeling method for hydropower systems with Kaplan turbines using probability density function (PDF) shaping. We first use multilayer perceptron (MLP) model to build the discretized openloop Kaplan unit, where the MLP is trained by historical data. Then we use a proportional integral double derivative (PIDD) controller and a lead-lag exciter to test the obtained digital twin model in a closed-loop fashion. Simulation results show that the proposed digital twin modeling method can accurately capture the dynamics of the Kaplan hydropower unit. Finally, we show that the obtained digital twin can help to optimize the PIDD parameters. Compared with the original PIDD controller, the optimized one can achieve an over 90% improvement on the mean square tracking error.

Digital Twin-Enabled Adaptive Control for Hydroelectric Systems: Turbine Governor and Voltage Regulation

This paper presents a comprehensive digital twin (DT) framework for hydroelectric systems that enables adaptive control of turbine governors and excitation systems without requiring detailed manufacturer specifications. The proposed framework integrates neural network-based system identification with stabilizing adaptive control laws for the installed turbine controller and middle-branch adaptive tuning for the installed voltage regulator. Using real operational data from Unit C-8 at Rocky Reach Dam (1,349 MW capacity), highfidelity neural network models are developed to capture turbine and generator dynamics without requiring detailed manufacturer specifications. The DT enables safe controller synthesis and validation in simulation before deployment. For turbine control, the proposed method achieves a 79.9% mean square error (MSE) reduction compared with that of an optimal controller. For voltage regulation, the adaptive excitation controller achieves approximately 42.6% MSE reduction while preserving installed protection logic. The results demonstrate that DT technology provides a practical pathway for modernizing hydropower control systems with minimal operational disruption.

In this paper, we present a scalable digital hardware accelerator based on non-volatile memory arrays capable of realizing deep convolutional spiking neural networks (SNNs). Our design studies are conducted using a compact model for spin-transfer torque random access memory (STT-RAM) devices. Large networks are realized by tiling multiple cores which communicate by transmitting spike packets via an on-chip routing network. Compared to an equivalent SRAM based core design, we show that the STT-RAM based design achieves nearly 15X higher GSOPS (Synaptic Operations per Second) per Watt per mm 2 making it a promising platform for realizing systems with significant area and power limitations.

Advanced Synchrophasor-based Application for Potential Distributed Energy Resources Management: Key Technology, Challenge and Vision

With an increasing number of distributed energy resources (DERs) integrating into the power system, the power grid is becoming more complex and uncertain. Owing to most of DERs are through grid-connected converters to integrate into the power system, the intermittent nature and resource-depended characteristic of the DERs are challenging their monitoring and control. Conventional synchronized measurement devices (SMDs) may be difficult to provide qualified data for DERs management for its accuracy and reporting-rate limitation. The monitoring systems developed basing on SMDs may be insufficient for depicting detailed dynamic manifestations of power systems with a high proportion integration of DERs. This paper shares some advanced synchrophasor-based applications developed in FNET/GridEye, which have a broad prospect for assisting system operator on the control and integration of the DERs.

DeepThermo: Deep Learning Accelerated Parallel Monte Carlo Sampling for Thermodynamics Evaluation of High Entropy Alloys

Since the introduction of Metropolis Monte Carlo (MC) sampling, it and its variants have become standard tools used for thermodynamics evaluations of physical systems. However, a long-standing problem that hinders the effectiveness and efficiency of MC sampling is the lack of a generic method (a.k.a. MC proposal) to update the system configurations. Consequently, current practices are not scalable. Here we propose a parallel MC sampling framework for thermodynamics evaluation—DeepThermo. By using deep learning–based MC proposals that can globally update the system configurations, we show that DeepThermo can effectively evaluate the phase transition behaviors of high entropy alloys, which have an astronomical configuration space. For the first time, we directly evaluate a density of states expanding over a range of ~e 10,000 for a real material. We also demonstrate DeepThermo’s performance and scalability up to 3,000 GPUs on both NVIDIA V100 and AMD MI250X-based supercomputers.

Comparative Study of Large Language Model Architectures on Frontier

Large language models (LLMs) have garnered significant attention in both the AI community and beyond. Among these, the Generative Pre-trained Transformer (GPT) has emerged as the dominant architecture, spawning numerous variants. However, these variants have undergone pre-training under diverse conditions, including variations in input data, data preprocessing, and training methodologies, resulting in a lack of controlled comparative studies. Here we meticulously examine two prominent open-sourced GPT architectures, GPT-NeoX and LLaMA, leveraging the computational power of Frontier, the world’s first Exascale supercomputer. Employing the same materials science text corpus and a comprehensive end-to-end pipeline, we conduct a comparative analysis of their training and downstream performance. Our efforts culminate in achieving state-of-the-art performance on a challenging materials science benchmark. Furthermore, we investigate the computation and energy efficiency, and propose a computationally efficient method for architecture design. To our knowledge, these pre-trained models represent the largest available for materials science. Our findings provide practical guidance for building LLMs on HPC platforms.
