Systematic Study of Solid-State U(VI) Photoreactivity: Long-Lived Radicalization and Electron Transfer in Uranyl Tetrachloride

Reported are the syntheses, structural characterizations and luminescence properties of three novel [UO 2 Cl 4 ] 2- bearing compounds containing substituted 1,1’-dialkyl-4,4’-bipyridinum dications (i.e. viologens). These compounds undergo photoinduced luminescence quenching upon exposure to UV radiation. Further, this reactivity is concurrent with two phenomena: radicalization of the uranyl tetrachloride anion and photoelectron transfer to the viologen which constitutes the formal transfer of one electron from the [UO 2 Cl 4 ] 2- to the viologen species. This behavior is elucidated using electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy and further probed through a series of characterization and computational techniques including Rehm-Weller analysis, time-dependent density functional theory (TD-DFT), and density of states (DOS). This work provides a systematic study of the photoreactivity of the uranyl unit in the solid state, an under-described aspect of fundamental uranyl chemistry.

Delineating the Effects of Counterions on the Structural and Vibrational Properties of U(IV) Lindqvist Polyoxometalate Complexes

Herein we conducted a full investigation into the fundamental structural and vibrational properties of uranium(IV) Peacock−Weakley-type lacunary Lindqvist (W 10 ) polyoxometalate (POM) complexes. We recently demonstrated the importance of the secondary lattice elements in tuning the distortion of the D 4d symmetry in W 10 POM complexes, and here, we synthesized eight UW 10 complexes with different alkali metal counterions and evaluated how the composition and packing of counterion species affected complex structural and vibrational properties. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis on complexes 1−8 revealed changes in structural distortion parameters as a function of differences in counterion configurations, while far-infrared and Raman spectra for 1−8 also demonstrated that vibrational mode frequencies were sensitive to changes in counterion composition and packing. To more effectively compare different counterion configurations, we developed counterion effective ionic radius (eIR) as a new structural parameter, and comparisons between structural distortion parameters and eIR values strongly suggested that modulation by the secondary lattice elements can affect structural and vibrational manifolds within POM complexes. Partial least squares (PLS) analysis was used to quantitatively evaluate correlations observed within this investigation, and PLS statistical models showed a strong correlation between counterion eIR and both structural distortion parameters and vibrational mode frequencies.

Coupled Cluster Study of the Interactions of AnO 2 , AnO 2 + , and AnO 2 2+ (An = U, Np) with N 2 and CO

We report thermochemical and spectroscopic properties for actinyl complexes involving UO 2 2+/1+/0 and NpO 2 2+/1+/0 with N 2 and CO, together with the UO 2 -O 2 , UO 2 + -O 2 , and UO 2 + -NO complexes, have been studied for the first time using an accurate composite coupled cluster approach. Two general bonding motifs were investigated, end-on (η 1 ) and side-on (η 2 ) relative to the metal center of the actinyls. For end-on CO complexes, both C-coordinated (An-C) and O-coordinated (An-O) structures were examined, with the former always being lower in energy. All of the η 1 complexes were calculated to be stable, with dissociation energies ranging from 2 to 36 kcal/mol, except for that of UO 2 + -O 2 (the η 1 orientation for UO 2 + -NO was not amenable to single reference coupled cluster). In agreement with a previous study, the η 2 structure for UO 2 + -O 2 was calculated to be relatively strongly bound, by 22.3 kcal/mol in this work. The closely related NO complex, however, had a calculated dissociation energy of just 4.0 kcal/mol. The binding energy of O 2 to neutral UO 2 in a η 2 orientation was calculated to be very strong, 75.4 kcal/mol, and strongly resembled a UO 2 + (O 2 – ) complex at equilibrium. The N–N and C–O bonds were found to be somewhat activated for all the side-on (η 2 ) neutral An(IV) complexes, with stretching frequencies of N 2 or CO being red-shifted by as much as 480 cm –1 with a 0.06 Å bond length elongation. Dissociation energies for the η 1 complexes are strongly correlated with the extent of electron transfer from ligand to actinyl. The nature of bonding in the actinyl complexes is examined using natural resonance theory (NRT). The correlation between bonding motif and small molecule activation is in agreement with experiments in condensed phases.

Correction: Enhanced 5f-δ bonding in [U(C 7 H 7 ) 2 ] - : C K-edge XAS, magnetism, and ab initio calculations

The authors regret that two references to the multi-configurational pair-density functional theory methods used in the wavefunction calculations did not appear in the main article. The references were originally included in the Methods section of the Electronic Supplementary Information as ref. 17a and b, but should also have appeared in the second paragraph on page 9564. The references are listed below as ref. 1 and 2. The Royal Society of Chemistry apologises for these errors and any consequent inconvenience to authors and readers.
