Review of Recent Progress in Plasma-Facing Material Joints and Composites in the FRONTIER U.S.-Japan Collaboration

The plasma-facing components (PFCs) of future fusion reactors will have intricate structures and require multiple materials because no one material can simultaneously satisfy all the requirements of the component. The dissimilar material joints in PFCs must withstand extreme thermal and stress gradients under neutron irradiation. The Fusion Research Oriented to Neutron Irradiation and Tritium Behavior at Material Interfaces (FRONTIER) U.S.-Japan collaboration seeks to explore and explain the behavior of internal solid interfaces in PFCs under neutron irradiation. The first step of the collaboration was to identify the leading PFCs that should be studied further and prepare them for the next step, which will include neutron irradiation. Different strategies for material development are being pursued worldwide to produce robust PFCs. Here, in this work, an overview is presented of some of the most promising materials in the areas of copper alloys, tungsten-copper composites, tungsten-steel composites, additively manufactured tungsten, particle-reinforced tungsten, and tungsten and SiC fiber composites. Each material’s fabrication and benefits are described, and some discussion of remaining questions is given.

Colossal piezoresistance in narrow-gap Eu 5 In 2 Sb 6

Piezoresistance, the change of the electrical resistance (R) of a material in response to an applied mechanical stress (σ), is the driving principle of electromechanical devices such as strain gauges, accelerometers, and cantilever force sensors. Enhanced piezoresistance has been traditionally observed in two classes of uncorrelated materials: nonmagnetic semiconductors and composite structures. In this study, we report the discovery of a remarkably large piezoresistance in Eu 5 In 2 Sb 6 single crystals, wherein anisotropic metallic clusters naturally form within a semiconducting matrix due to electronic interactions. Eu 5 In 2 Sb 6 shows a highly anisotropic piezoresistance, and uniaxial pressure along [001] of only 0.4 GPa leads to a resistivity drop of >99.95%, which results in a colossal piezoresistance factor of 5000×10 –11 Pa –1 . Our result not only reveals the role of interactions and phase separation in the realization of colossal piezoresistance, but it also highlights a route to multifunctional devices with large responses to both pressure and magnetic field.

A Review of Axial Flux Permanent Magnet Machine Technology

Axial flux permanent magnet machines (AFPM) are popular for applications that benefit from high torque density and an axially compact form factor, such as in-wheel traction drives. Although the radial flux permanent magnet machine (RFPM) and the AFPM work based on the same underlying principle, the differences in their geometry introduce complexities in analysis of the AFPM. In this paper, the different AFPM design variants, their sizing approaches, computationally efficient design optimization techniques, and manufacturing techniques reported in literature are reviewed. In addition to classical AFPM machines, emerging variants and research opportunities with potential to push the boundaries of electric machine technology are reviewed. Furthermore, these include bearingless AFPMs, magnetically geared AFPMs, and combined radial-axial flux machines.

FEM Analysis of Hybrid LTS/HTS Cos-Theta Dipole Magnet

After the recent results on Bi-2212 superconductive magnets realized and tested in canted cosine-theta and solenoid designs, respectively, at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL) and NHMFL, the first Bi-2212 stress-managed cosine-theta insert magnet is in the assembly phase at Fermilab. This insert will be part of the first hybrid cosine-theta magnet made of Nb3Sn outer layers within the US-MDP effort to reach 20 T bore field. This paper reports the analytical analysis of the cosine-theta Nb3Sn/Bi-2212 hybrid magnet. As an introduction, it shows the validation of the finalized HTS coils' design optimized using the ROXIE code. Subsequently, it reports the parameters, logic, and implementation method of the 2D electromagnetic and mechanical FEM analysis of the LTS/HTS hybrid magnet. Results from the ANSYS detailed model made with sub-modeling geometry are compared with the homogeneous model implemented in the past. Moreover, a Python code was implemented to simulate the current degradation due to stresses in the detail-modeled conductor areas. The current degradation is introduced in the simulation dynamics for both conductors as an iteration process during the energization load step only after applying pre-stress and thermal loads. The numerical and graphic results of the 2D cosine-theta LTS/HTS magnet cross-section will be described and analyzed.
