Search for h c → π + π − J / ψ via ψ ( 3686 ) → π 0 h c

Using ( 2712.4 ± 14.3 ) × 10 6 ψ ( 3686 ) events collected with the BESIII detector operating at the BEPCII collider, we search for the hadronic transition h c → π + π − J / ψ via ψ ( 3686 ) → π 0 h c . No significant signal is observed. We set the most stringent upper limits to date on the branching fractions B ( ψ ( 3686 ) → π 0 h c ) × B ( h c → π + π − J / ψ ) and B ( h c → π + π − J / ψ ) at the 90% confidence level, which are determined to be 6.7 × 10 − 7 and 9.4 × 10 − 4 , respectively. Search for two-body B meson decays to Λ 0 and Ω c ( * ) 0

We report the results of the first search for Standard Model and baryon-number-violating two-body decays of the neutral B mesons to Λ 0 and Ω c ( * ) 0 using 711 fb − 1 of data collected at the ϒ ( 4 S ) resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy e + e − collider. We observe no evidence of signal from any such decays and set 95% confidence-level upper limits on the products of B 0 and B ¯ 0 branching fractions for these two-body decays with B ( Ω c 0 → π + Ω − ) in the range between 9.5 × 10 − 8 and 31.2 × 10 − 8 . Search for the e + e − → ϕ χ c 1 ( 3872 ) process at BESIII

Based on 368.5 p b − 1 of e + e − collision data collected at center-of-mass energies 4.914 and 4.946 GeV by the BESIII detector, the e + e − → ϕ χ c 1 ( 3872 ) process is searched for the first time. No significant signal is observed and the upper limits at the 90% confidence level on the product of the Born cross section σ ( e + e − → ϕ χ c 1 ( 3872 ) ) and the branching fraction B [ χ c 1 ( 3872 ) → π + π − J / ψ ] at 4.914 and 4.946 GeV are set to be 0.85 and 0.96 pb, respectively. These measurements provide useful information for the production of the χ c 1 ( 3872 ) at e + e − colliders and deepen our understanding about the nature of this particle. Search for charged-lepton flavor violation in the production and decay of top quarks using trilepton final states in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ =13 TeV

A search is performed for charged-lepton flavor violating processes in top quark (𝑡) production and decay. The data were collected by the CMS experiment from proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV and correspond to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb −1 . The selected events are required to contain one opposite-sign electron-muon pair, a third charged lepton (electron or muon), and at least one jet of which no more than one is associated with a bottom quark. Boosted decision trees are used to distinguish signal from background, exploiting differences in the kinematics of the final states particles. The data are consistent with the standard model expectation. Upper limits at 95% confidence level are placed in the context of effective field theory on the Wilson coefficients, which range between 0.024–0.424 TeV −2 depending on the flavor of the associated light quark and the Lorentz structure of the interaction. These limits are converted to upper limits on branching fractions involving up (charm) quarks, 𝑡 → 𝑒⁢𝜇⁢𝑢 (𝑡 → 𝑒⁢𝜇⁢𝑐), of 0.032⁢(0.498) × 10 −6 , 0.022⁢(0.369) × 10 −6 , and 0.012⁢(0.216) × 10 −6 for tensorlike, vectorlike, and scalarlike interactions, respectively.

Search for e + e − → φ χ c 0 and φ η c 2 ( 1 D ) at center-of-mass energies from 4.47 to 4.95 GeV

Utilizing a dataset of 6.7 fb − 1 from electron-positron collisions recorded by the BESIII detector at the BEPCII storage ring, a search is conducted for the processes e + e − → ϕ χ c 0 and ϕ η c 2 ( 1 D ) across center-of-mass energies from 4.47 to 4.95 GeV. In the absence of any significant signals, upper limits are set. These include limits on the dressed cross sections for e + e − → ϕ χ c 0 , as well as the product of the dressed cross section for e + e − → ϕ η c 2 ( 1 D ) and a sum of five branching fractions. Furthermore, the product of the electronic width of Y ( 4660 ) and the branching fraction of the Y ( 4660 ) → ϕ χ c 0 , denoted as Γ e + e − Y ( 4660 ) B Y ( 4660 ) → ϕ χ c 0 , is determined to be < 0.35 eV at the 90% confidence level. Indirect searches for ultraheavy dark matter in the time domain

Dark matter may exist today in the form of ultraheavy composite bound states. Collisions between such dark matter states can release intense bursts of radiation that include γ -rays among the final products. Thus, indirect detection signals of dark matter may include unconventional γ -ray bursts. Such bursts may have been missed not necessarily because of their low arriving γ -ray fluxes, but rather their briefness and rareness. We point out that intense bursts whose nondetection thus far are due to the latter can be detected in the near future with existing and planned facilities. In particular, we propose that, with slight experimental adjustments and suitable data analyses, imaging atmospheric Cherenkov telescopes (IACTs) and Pulsed All-Sky Near-Infrared and Optical Search for Extra-Terrestrial Intelligence (PANOSETI) are promising tools for detecting such rare, brief, but intense bursts. We also show that, if we assume these bursts originate from collisions of dark matter states, IACTs and PANOSETI can probe a large dark matter parameter space beyond existing limits. Additionally, we present a concrete model of dark matter that produces bursts potentially detectable in these instruments. Published by the American Physical Society 2025

Uncertainties in tellurium-based dark matter searches stemming from nuclear structure uncertainties

Using tellurium dioxide as a target, we calculate uncertainties on 90% upper confidence limits of Galilean effective field theory (Galilean EFT) couplings to a weakly interacting massive particle (WIMP) dark matter candidate due to uncertainties in nuclear shell models. We find that these uncertainties in naturally occurring tellurium isotopes are comparable across the different Galilean EFT couplings to uncertainties in xenon, with some reaching over 100%. We also consider the effect these nuclear uncertainties have on estimates of the annual modulation of dark matter from these searches, finding that the uncertainties in the modulation amplitude are proportional to the nonmodulating upper confidence limit uncertainties. We also show that the determination of the modulation phase is insensitive to changes in the nuclear model for a given isotope.

Search for very-short-baseline oscillations of reactor antineutrinos with the SoLid detector

In this paper we report the first scientific result based on antineutrinos emitted from the BR2 reactor at SCK CEN. The SoLid experiment uses a novel type of highly granular detector whose basic detection unit combines two scintillators, polyvinyl toluene (PVT) and Li 6 F : ZnS ( Ag ) , to measure antineutrinos via their inverse- β -decay products. An advantage of PVT is its highly linear response as a function of deposited particle energy. The full-scale detector comprises 12 800 voxels and operates over a very short 6.3–8.9 m baseline from the reactor core. The detector segmentation and its three-dimensional imaging capabilities facilitate the extraction of the positron energy from the rest of the visible energy, allowing the latter to be utilized for signal-background discrimination. We present a result obtained from 280 reactor-on days (55 MW mean power) and 172 reactor-off days, respectively, of live data taking. A total of 29 479 ± 603 (stat) antineutrino candidates have been selected, corresponding to an average rate of 105 events per day and a signal-to-background ratio of 0.27. A search for disappearance of antineutrinos to a sterile state has been conducted using complementary model-dependent frequentist and Bayesian fits, providing constraints on the allowed region of the reactor antineutrino anomaly.

Daily modulations and broadband strategy in axion searches: An application with the CAST-CAPP detector

It has been previously advocated that the presence of the daily and annual modulations of the axion flux on the Earth’s surface may dramatically change the strategy of the axion searches. The arguments were based on the so-called Axion Quark Nugget (AQN) dark matter model which was originally put forward to explain the similarity of the dark and visible cosmological matter densities Ω dark ∼ Ω visible . In this framework, the population of galactic axions with mass 10 − 6 eV ≲ m a ≲ 10 − 3 eV and velocity ⟨ v a ⟩ ∼ 10 − 3 c will be accompanied by axions with typical velocities ⟨ v a ⟩ ∼ 0.6 c emitted by AQNs. Furthermore, in this framework, it has also been argued that the AQN-induced axion daily modulation (in contrast with the conventional weakly interactive massive particle paradigm) could be as large as (10–20)%, representing the main motivation for the present investigation. We argue that the daily modulations along with the broadband detection strategy can be very useful tools for the discovery of such relativistic axions. The data from the CAST-CAPP detector have been used following such arguments. Unfortunately, due to the dependence of the amplifier chain on temperature-dependent gain drifts and other factors, we could not conclusively show the presence or absence of a dark sector-originated daily modulation. However, this proof of principle analysis procedure can serve as a reference for future studies. Published by the American Physical Society 2025

Search for a massless dark photon in c → u γ ′ decays

Using 7.9 f b − 1 of e + e − collision data collected at s = 3.773 GeV with the BESIII detector at the BEPCII collider, we search for the massless dark photon with the flavor-changing neutral current processes D 0 → ω γ ′ and D 0 → γ γ ′ for the first time. No significant signals are observed, and the upper limits at the 90% confidence level on the massless dark photon branching fraction are set to be 1.1 × 10 − 5 and 2.0 × 10 − 6 for D 0 → ω γ ′ and D 0 → γ γ ′ , respectively. These results provide the most stringent constraint on the new physics energy scale associated with c u γ ′ coupling in the world, with the new physics energy scale related parameter | C | 2 + | C 5 | 2 < 8.2 × 10 − 17 GeV − 2 at the 90% confidence level. Search for D 0 meson decays to π + π − e + e − and K + K − e + e − final states

A search for D 0 meson decays to the π + π − e + e − and K + K − e + e − final states is reported using a sample of proton-proton collisions collected by the LHCb experiment at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 6 fb − 1 . The decay D 0 → π + π − e + e − is observed for the first time when requiring that the two electrons are consistent with coming from the decay of a ϕ or ρ 0 / ω meson. The corresponding branching fractions are measured relative to the D 0 → K − π − [ e + e − ] ρ 0 / ω decay, where the two electrons are consistent with coming from the decay of a ρ 0 or ω meson. No evidence is found for the D 0 → K + K − e + e − decay and world-best limits are set on its branching fraction. The results are compared to, and found to be consistent with, the branching fractions of the D 0 → π + π − μ + μ − and D 0 → K + K − μ + μ − decays recently measured by LHCb and confirm lepton universality at the current precision. © 2025 CERN, for the LHCb Collaboration 2025 CERN

Search for Supersymmetry with a Compressed Mass Spectrum in Events with a Soft $\tau$ Lepton, a Highly Energetic Jet, and Large Missing Transverse Momentum in Proton-Proton Collisions at $\sqrt{s}=$ TeV

The first search for supersymmetry in events with an experimental signature of one soft, hadronically decaying τ lepton, one energetic jet from initial-state radiation, and large transverse momentum imbalance is presented. These event signatures are consistent with direct or indirect production of scalar τ leptons (τ˜) in supersymmetric models that exhibit coannihilation between the τ˜ and the lightest neutralino (χ˜10), and that could generate the observed relic density of dark matter. The data correspond to an integrated luminosity of 77.2 fb-1 of proton-proton collisions at s=13 TeV collected with the CMS detector at the LHC in 2016 and 2017. The results are interpreted in a supersymmetric scenario with a small mass difference (Δm) between the chargino (χ˜1±) or next-to-lightest neutralino (χ˜20), and the χ˜10. The mass of the τ˜ is assumed to be the average of the χ˜1± and χ˜10 masses. The data are consistent with standard model background predictions. Upper limits at 95% confidence level are set on the sum of the χ˜1±, χ˜20, and τ˜ production cross sections for Δm(χ˜1±,χ˜10)=50 GeV, resulting in a lower limit of 290 GeV on the mass of the χ˜1±, which is the most stringent to date and surpasses the bounds from the LEP experiments.

Search for Dark Matter Induced Deexcitation of 180 Ta m

Weak-scale dark matter particles, in collisions with nuclei, can mediate transitions between different nuclear energy levels. In particular, owing to sizeable momentum exchange, dark matter particles can enable de-excitation of nuclear isomers that are extremely long lived with respect to regular radioactive decays. In this paper, we utilize data from a past experiment with 180 Ta m to search for γ-lines that would accompany dark matter induced de-excitation of this isomer. Non-observation of such transitions above background yields the first direct constraint on the lifetime of 180 Ta m against DM-initiated transitions: T 1/2 > 1.3 × 10 14 a at 90% C.I. Using this result, we derive novel constraints on dark matter models with strongly interacting relics, and on models with inelastic dark matter particles. Existing constraints are strengthened by this independent new method. As a result, the obtained limits are also valid for the Standard Model γ-decay of 180 Ta m .
