Modular Growth and Nucleation Formulations in Modular Plasticity Models

Recent investigations like the second and third Sandia Fracture Challenges have characterized and demonstrated the performance of a variety of failure techniques and models. These surveys have considered a wide breadth of models encapsulating both general failure criteria as well as those focusing on pore nucleation and growth. Extensive reviews exist on both topics. The former category generally consists of classic models like the Johnson-Cook or Wilkins criteria. These models were recently added to modular plasticity models in the Library of Advanced Materials for Engineering (LAME) as criteria for use with element death capabilities. The latter category was not treated in that effort. There exists a large class of failure models based on predicting the evolution of pores and failure associated with such microstructures. While the exact mechanisms and corresponding impact on the macroscale behavior remain an active area of research, a large suite of formulations have been proposed combining different features of both pore nucleation and subsequent growth. The most famous of these are based on the popular Gurson model of pore growth derived via micromechanical analysis assuming a plastically incompressible matrix. Numerous other models exist for both growth and nucleation and the Cocks-Ashby growth and Horstemeyer-Gokhale nucleation models have been used successfully in recent Sandia Fracture Challenges. This specific combination is colloquially referred to as the "BCJ-failure model as it has been frequently used with the Bammann-Chisea-Johnson plasticity model.

Phase I Closeout Report: Invoking Artificial Neural Networks to Measure Insider Threat Mitigation

Researchers from Sandia National Laboratories (Sandia) and the University of Texas at Austin (UT) conducted this study to explore the effectiveness of commercial artificial neural network (ANN) software to improve insider threat detection and mitigation (ITDM). This study hypothesized that ANNs could be "trainee to learn patterns of organizational behaviors, detect off-normal (or anomalous) deviations from these patterns, and alert when certain types, frequencies, or quantities of deviations emerge. The ReconaSense ANN system was installed at UT's Nuclear Engineering Teaching Laboratory (NETL) and collected 13,653 access control data points and 694 intrusion sensor data points over a three-month period. Preliminary analysis of this baseline data demonstrated regularized patterns of life in the facility, and that off-normal behaviors are detectable under certain situations -- even for a facility with anticipated highly non-routine, operational behaviors. Completion of this pilot study demonstrated how the ReconaSense ANN could be used to identify expected operational patterns and detect unexpected anomalous behaviors in support of a data-analytic approach to ITDM. While additional studies are needed to fully understand and characterize this system, the results of this initial study are overall very promising for demonstrating a new framework for ITDM utilizing ANNs and data analysis techniques.

Photocatalytic Material Surfaces for SARS-CoV-2 Virus Inactivation

Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-COV-2) can be spread through close contact or through fomite mediated transmission. This study details the fabrication and analysis of a photocatalyst surface which can rapidly inactivate SARS-COV-2 to limit spread of the virus by fomite mediated transmission. The surface being developed at Sandia for this purpose is a minimally hazardous Ag-Ti0 2 nanomaterial which is engineered to have high photocatalytic activity. Initial results at Sandia California in a BSL-2 safe surrogate virus- Vesicular Stomatitis Virus (VSV) show a significant difference between the photocatalyst material under exposure to visible light than controls. Additionally, UV-A light (365 nm) was found to eliminate SARS-COV-2 after 9 hours on all tested surfaces with irradiance of 15 mW/cm 2 equivalent to direct circumsolar irradiance.

CENC PSN VOID FY20 Report

Maritime trade accounts for approximately 80 percent of international commerce. The high volume of vessels traversing domestic and international ports makes port areas prime targets for terrorism as well as illegal trafficking of drugs and arms (conventional or nuclear). Port security is therefore a worldwide concern affecting global economies, freedom of movement, and national security. However, extensive port monitoring is inherently complex and time consuming — making it truly viable only via an automated framework that can detect potential illicit activity and alert authorities in a timely manner. The development of image processing algorithms for this purpose requires access to large, labeled datasets that cover the breadth of targets of interest as well as the environments that they are observed within. Curated and labeled datasets of this nature are of enormous value to Sandia's Defense Nuclear Nonproliferation and National Security Program portfolios, as well as to Sandia's machine learning/automatic target recognition (ML/ATR) algorithm development and R&D communities. The goal of this project is to create a commercial satellite imagery dataset of labeled maritime vessels in port areas to support the development of ML/ATR algorithms for port security nonproliferation purposes. This dataset — Port Security Nonproliferation Vessel Overhead Imagery Dataset (PSN VOID) — has the potential to support a variety of other ancillary missions, such as maritime domain awareness, domestic and international security, drug interdiction, and weapons trafficking.

Broadband Characterization and Circuit Model Development of Transmission-Scale Transformers

This report describes broadband measurements of transmission-scale transformers typical in the electric power grid. This work was performed as part of the EMP Resilient Grid LDRD project at Sandia National Laboratories to generate circuit models that can be used for high-altitude electromagnetic pulse (HEMP) coupling simulations and response predictions. The objective of the work was to obtain characterization data of substation yard equipment across a frequency range relevant to HEMP. Vector network analyzer measurements up to 100 MHz were performed on two power transformers at ABB-Hitachi and a single ITEC potential transformer. Custom cable breakouts were designed to interface with the transformer terminals and provide ground connections to the chassis at the base of the transformer bushings. The three-phase terminals of the power transformers were measured as a common mode impedance using a parallel resistive splitter, and the single-phase terminals of the potential transformer were measured directly. A vector fitting algorithm was used to empirically fit circuit models to the resulting two-port networks and input impedances of the measured objects. Simplified circuit representations of the input impedances were also generated to assess the degree of precision needed for high-altitude electromagnetic pulse response predictions, which were performed in Sandia's XYCE circuit simulator platform. HEMP coupling simulations using the transformer models showed significant reduction in the voltage peak and broadening in the pulse width seen at the power transformer compared to the traveling wave voltage. This indicated the importance of the load condition when defining the coupled insult in an electric power substation. Simplified circuit models showed a similar voltage at the transformer with a smoothed waveform. The presence of potential transformers in the simulation did not significantly change the simulated voltage at the power transformer. Single-port input impedance models were also developed to define load conditions when transfer characteristics were not necessary.

SNL will be able to provide well-calibrated models to weapons systems analysts by integrating an engine for constitutive model calibration with the GRANTA materials database

Researchers at Sandia National Laboratories have integrated the GRANTA materials database with the MatCal calibration engine to calibrate material models from characterization data. GRANTA is gaining acceptance across the NNSA Tri-lab complex and is being populated with weapons-specific test data by Sandia experimentalists. To use that data to create material models for use by weapons systems analysts, MatCal has been enabled import calibration data and test conditions from GRANTA to quickly and reproducibly produce a calibrated set of parameters for a given constitutive model. The team is currently working to store the parameters characterizing material behavior in GRANTA to make them accessible by all weapons analysts.

Proposal to use the DOE-STD-3009-2014 Methodology to Prepare the Documented Safety Analysis (DSA) for Research Reactor Nuclear Facilities

Sandia National Laboratories (SNL) personnel operate a low power research reactor (the Annular Core Research Reactor, or ACRR), and a zero-power critical experiment assembly referred to as CX. In accordance with 10 CFR 830, Subpart B, Appendix A, the acceptable methodology for developing a Documented Safety Analysis (DSA) for DOE nuclear reactors is the Nuclear Regulatory Commission’s (NRC’s) Regulatory Guide 1.70 (RG 1.70). RG 1.70 does not address certain areas required by 10 CFR 830 and expected by DOE (e.g., full facility hazard analysis). Thus, the current DSAs for SNL’s reactor nuclear facilities are based on RG 1.70, but also of necessity supplemented by DOE-STD-3009-94 methods. SNL personnel, in consultation with the National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) Sandia Field Office (SFO), have concluded that an alternate methodology is preferred to RG 1.70. The details of the proposal, and the reasons motivating its development, are discussed in the order described below. The proposed alternate methodology will be applicable to the ACRR and the CX (i.e., it will be applicable to nuclear facilities in which a reactor and/or a critical assembly will be operated).
