A 4.8 hour periodicity in the spectra of Cygnus X-3

The X-ray binary Cyg X-3 has been observed on three occasions during 1975 and 1976 by the GSFC Cosmic X-Ray Spectroscopy Experiment on OSO 8. The X-ray spectra from all three observations can be represented by power-law continua with strong iron line emission. Comparisons of spectra taken within the same observation at various phases of the 4.8 hour period reveal a relative excess of low-energy X-ray emission near zero phase (i.e., the minimum) of the 4.8 hour modulation. In addition, the centroid of the line emission is observed to vary in phase with the 4.8 hour cycle. The possibility of persistent thermal X-ray emission from material surrounding the binary system is introduced in an effort to account for the observed effects.

Periodic variations of precipitation in the tropical Atlantic Ocean

Statistical analysis of the satellite-borne Electrically Scanning Microwave Radiometer data in the tropical Atlantic region reveals that the rainfall near local noon is higher both in frequency of occurrence and intensity than the rainfall in the same area near local midnight. Another striking feature that stands out from the analysis is an oscillation with a period of 3.3. days in rainfall occurrence and intensity. This periodicty is consistent with easterly waves traveling from the African continent to the region under study.

Design of high-perveance confined-flow guns for periodic-permanent-magnet-focused tubes

An approach to the design of high perveance, low compression guns is described in which confinement is used to stabilize the beam for subsequent periodic-permanent-magnet focusing. The computed results for two cases are presented. A magnetic boundary value problem was solved for the scalar potential from which the axial magnetic field was computed. A solution was found by iterating between Poisson's equation and the electron trajectory calculations. Magnetic field values were varied in magnitude until a laminar beam with minimum scalloping was produced.

Period variations in pulsating X-ray sources. II - Torque variations and stellar response

A statistical description of variations in the torque acting on a rotating neutron star is developed in terms of stationary random processes and is used to calculate the torque power spectrum, stellar response power spectrum, and the total mean square variation in the crustal angular velocity of the star. The response of a star with a finite frequency internal mode is calculated with the aid of phenomenological equations which correspond to a generalized two-component model of the star. The form of the stellar response functions is examined in a number of limiting cases of physical interest, and the dependence of the response power on both the period of observation and the time over which fluctuating torques have been acting is discussed.

State of the mineral component of rat bone tissue during hypokinesia and the recovery period

Experiments were conducted on young growing rats. Hypokinesia lasting from 20 to 200 days caused retarded gain in weight and volume of the femur and delayed development of the cortical layer of the diaphysis. In contrast, the density of the cortical layer of the femoral diaphysis increased due to elevation of the mineral saturation of the bone tissue microstructures. Incorporation of Ca into the bone tissue in hypokinesia had a tendency to reduce. Partial normalization of the bone tissue mineral component occurred during a 20 day recovery period following hypokinesia.

Optimal periodic binary codes of lengths 28 to 64

Results from computer searches performed to find repeated binary phase coded waveforms with optimal periodic autocorrelation functions are discussed. The best results for lengths 28 to 64 are given. The code features of major concern are where (1) the peak sidelobe in the autocorrelation function is small and (2) the sum of the squares of the sidelobes in the autocorrelation function is small.

A precise position and optical identification for 4U 2129+47 - X-ray heating and a 5.2 hour binary period

A precise (20 arcsec) position and an optical counterpart are presented for the weak X-ray source 4U 2129+47. The optical counterpart shows weak but distinct He II 4686-A and C III-N III 4640-4650-A emission. Both H-beta and Ca II H and K are sometimes visible in absorption. Numerous plates and spectrophotometric observations from the 1978 observing season show that the blue magnitude varies from 16.7 to 18.0 in a period of 5.2382 hours. The light curve is sinusoidal in appearance, but with sharply defined V-shaped minima. It is proposed that most of the optical emission from this system originates at the X-ray heated face of the normal star and hence that this system is analogous to HZ Her/Her X-1. This is one of the few intrinsically faint optical counterparts of X-ray sources that show clear evidence of binary nature. The observations suggest a distance of 1.2-1.6 kpc for the source, and a consequent X-ray luminosity of approximately 10 to the 34.8 ergs/s.

Aerodynamic response of an airfoil with thickness to a longitudinal and transverse periodic gust

The unsteady lift of an airfoil with thickness subject to a two-dimensional periodic gust is analyzed using the recent theory of Goldstein and Atassi. It is found that to properly account for the coupling between the steady potential flow and the unsteady vortical flow, one has to consider the contribution of order alpha-squared (when alpha is steady state disturbance) to the potential flowfield. A closed form analytical formula is then derived for the lift function. The results show strong dependence on the wave members of the gust.

Buckling of periodic structures

Equations are developed for the buckling of a general lattice structure that has repetitive geometry. Equilibrium at a typical node is expressed using finite element techniques, and the only assumption is that the response is periodic. By basing the stiffness matrix on the exact solution of the beam column equation, accurate results are obtained for complex buckling behavior that would require a very large system of equations using conventional techniques. The present method requires the eigenvalues of only a 6x6 determinant. The results are used to study the buckling of isogrid cylinders, three-element truss columns and polygonal rings. Details of the analysis including expressions for all terms in the governing stability determinant are given.

Periodicity of the gamma-ray transient event of 5 March 1979

An unusual gamma-ray burst event was observed on 5 March 1979 by nine different spacecraft. The position of the event has been accurately determined as r.a. = 5 h 25.95 min, dec = -66 deg 07.1 arcmin (epoch 1950.0), coincident with the location of the supernova remnant N49 in the Large Magellanic Cloud. The burst was of very high intensity, and if isotropic and located at the distance (approximately 55 kpc) of N49 had a peak luminosity of greater than 10 to the 44th erg/sec. Even more interesting is the obvious 8-s periodicity of the event, following the initial very intense outburst. The time history and power spectrum of this event as determined from Pioneer Venus Orbiter data is here reported.

Comparison of radar derived slant path rain attenuations with the COMSTAR beacon fades at 28.56 GHz for summer and winter periods

An experiment for testing and improving the accuracy of radar derived slant path attenuations of a 28.56-GHz COMSTAR beacon signal is described. The results of an additional data base consisting of five rain days during fall-winter periods of 1978-1979 are considered, over which 715 min of simultaneous radar and disdrometer data were obtained.

Detection of X-ray emission from the vicinity of two short-period RS CVn-like binaries

Two new soft X-ray sources H0118 + 067 and H0630 + 82 have been detected with a low energy detector of the HEAO A-2 experiment. Short-period RS CVn-like binaries UVPsc and SV Cam lie within the error boxes of these sources and are proposed as the optical identifications for the two X-ray sources. The light curve of H0118 + 067, identified with UV Psc, indicates an X-ray flare event which commenced on 1978 January 11.6 and persisted until at least January 12.7. It is suggested that H0118 + 067 and the flaring X-ray source H0123 + 075, detected by the medium and high energy detectors of the HEAO A-2 experiment, may be the same object. The observed X-ray luminosity of the sources are in the same range as observed for other RS CVn binaries. The X-ray emission is probably of coronal origin.

Detection of periodic light variations in the old nova V 603 Aquilae /1918/

Periodic visible light variations of the old nova V 603 Aql (1918) were detected with the Fine Error Sensor Instrument (FES) aboard the IUE satellite. Continuous observations were carried out during more than two complete cycles. The light curve shows a broad maximum and a pronounced minimum which was covered three times, and is tentatively interpreted as an eclipse of the accretion disk around the white dwarf by the late main sequence component.

A survey of approximately 1 MeV/nucleon solar flare particle abundances, in the Z ? 1-26 range, during the 1973-1977 solar minimum period

The abundances of the major elements over the range H-Fe in solar flare energetic particles near 1 MeV/nucleon were surveyed for a large number of flares during the period 1973-1977; observations were carried out by the IMP 8 spacecraft in interplanetary space. The survey considered two types of solar flare events: (1) large events from which the average boundaries were deduced, and (2) events which have significant abundance differences from average. In addition, two He-3-rich events with abundance features that are different from previous examples are reported: one case with no enhancements of heavy ions, and a second case in which, compared to O, the heavy-ion enhancements are confined to the charge range Si-Fe rather than the usual case in which all elements Ne-Fe are enriched.

IUE observations of long period eclipsing binaries - A study of accretion onto non-degenerate stars

IUE observations made in 1978-1979 recorded a whole class of interacting long-period binaries similar to beta Lyrae, which includes RX Cas, SX Cas, V 367 Cyg, W Cru, beta Lyr, and W Ser, called the W Serpentis stars. These mass-transferring binaries with relatively high mass transfer rate show two prominent features in the far ultraviolet: a continuum with a color temperature higher than the one observed in the optical region (about 12,000 K), and a strong emission line spectrum with the N V doublet at 1240 A, C IV doublet at 1550 A and lines of Si II, Si III, Si IV, C II, Fe III, AI III, etc. These phenomena are discussed on the assumption that they are due to accretion onto non-degenerate stars.

Unification of some biochemical methods of research in the pre- and post-flight periods

The biochemical methods for determination of various parameters and factors during pre- and post-flight periods, as used by American and Soviet teams dealing with space flight medicine are compared. The emphasis is on the exchange of information on the study of the blood and urine content of space travelers before and after space flight. A series of electrolytic, enzymatic, and hormonal factors is discussed.

A solution for two-dimensional Fredholm integral equations of the second kind with periodic, semiperiodic, or nonperiodic kernels

A numerical scheme for solving two dimensional Fredholm integral equations of the second kind is developed. The proof of the convergence of the numerical scheme is shown for three cases: the case of periodic kernels, the case of semiperiodic kernels, and the case of nonperiodic kernels. Applications to the incompressible, stationary Navier-Stokes problem are of primary interest.

Analytic construction of periodic orbits about the collinear points

A third-order analytical solution for halo-type periodic motion about the collinear points of the circular-restricted problem is presented. The three-dimensional equations of motion are obtained by a Lagrangian formulation. The solution is constructed using the method of successive approximations in conjunction with a technique similar to the Lindstedt-Poincare method. The theory is applied to the sun-earth system.
